1. In this week’s episode we dive into the heart of the 1980s for a complete show at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmon, VA on November 1, 1985, as well as a segment of the September 2, 1980 show at Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY. The main show finds the band competing with the intense vibe of the scene and working to will the crowd back from the brink. As a result, it features some of the most unique setlisting we’ve heard featured on a Dick’s Picks release, regardless the era. In the 1980’s segment, we hear the band toying with “Space.” before showcasing Brent’s initial impacts on the band, through a stunning “Morning Dew.”Disc One gives us our third “Dancing In The Streets” in the last two releases. The remainder of the set is upbeat, and updated takes on 70’s Dead classics here with their full band from the 80’s. Disc Two might be the most mellow set in Dick’s Picks history as “Samson & Delila” is really the only upbeat song of the night. What follows is an hour of deeply methodical and meditative music that only makes sense when one knows the intensity of the events of the night. “High Time>He’s Gone -> Spoonful>Comes A Time>Lost Sailor>Drums -> Space -> Saint Of Circumstance” bridges the second and third discs in stunning fashion. In Disc Three we move from the contemplative to the wedding party as “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “She Belongs To Me” and “Gloria” cap off a weird set that has to be heard. Finally, the set ends with a segment from 9/2/80 with a deeply engaged “Space” fading into “Iko Iko” before a stunning “Morning Dew” and “Sugar Magnolia” closes things down. It’s a wild and unique release in the overall catalogue, one that showcases The Dead at their most 80’s in 1985.This episode is dedicated to Thoughts On The Dead.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. This week we’re bringing you Definitely Dylan’s belated International Women’s Day episode (after all, every day is Women’s Day)!On this occasion we’re dedicating the hour to the many women that have sung Bob Dylan’s songs over the years by playing a small selection of songs from the Spotify playlist I’ve put together! Join us in celebrating these artists and the contributions they have made to our understanding of Dylan’s work, by reframing the songs and often showing us a different and new dimension to the song’s meaning. If you’re interested in checking out the IWD episodes from previous years, here’s the “Women & Dylan” episode from 2018, where I make a case for importance of female perspectives in the discussion of Dylan’s songs, especially in their treatment of women. And here’s the one from last year, with requests from female Dylan fans.If you’d like to check out the episode in which I analyse the song She Belongs To Me, you can listen to that here. One version that we didn’t have time for and that I couldn’t include in the playlist because it’s not on Spotify, is Ren Harvieu’s gorgeous Just Like A Woman, which she recorded for Definitely Dylan the other week. If you haven’t heard that yet, I urge you to check it out! Below you can find the Spotify playlist that I’ve put together of some fantastic Dylan covers sung by women. I hope you’ll enjoy it and maybe discover some new favourites. I’d love to know your thoughts!Let me know what your favourite version of a Dylan song interpreted by a female artist is by leaving a comment below - I’m always up for discovering more!Correction: the Jackie DeShannon version of Don’t Think Twice (It’s All Right) that we played in this episode id not the one that appeared on her 1965 album, but rather one that she recorded in 1973 (this version remained unrelased until 2015, when it appeared on the compilation All the Love: The Lost Atlantic Recordings). The actual 1965 version has a much more mid-60s folk pop accompaniment, and you can listen to it here.Playlist:Like A Rolling Stone - Maxine WeldonClothes Line Saga - Suzzy & Maggie RocheAin’t Talkin’ - Bettye LaVetteCovenant Woman - Hannah CohenDon’t Think Twice (It’s All Right) - Jackie DeShannonShe Belongs To Me - Ane BrunGotta Serve Somebody Etta James

Her new book Shine shares her secrets for success. Amy Powney, creative director of sustainable fashion label Mother of Pearl, spent much of her childhood without mains electricity or running water when her parents sold their house to live off-grid in rural Lancashire. Despite being taken to school in a handmade trailer and having requests for tracksuits denied, Amy found that her parents approach to ethical living had influenced her when she began a career in fashion. Carol is from the generation of girls who weren’t able to play football at school or elsewhere and it wasn’t until she set up her own team at the age of 48, that she fulfilled her dream. Well in some ways I guess this one is appropriate this week....   The second set from Nov. 8th, 1985 has some great highs and some lows. It starts with a version of 'Revolution' with some nice jams but Garcias stepping all over the lyrics ;) Estimated Prophet follows with an excellent jam, especially as it goes into a less than stellar 'Eyes of the World'. Drums and Space follow and then a nice 'Other One' into a short 'I Need A Miracle'. The highlight of the set, if not the show follows, with a wonderful version of Dylan's 'She Belongs To Me'. They close the set with a spirited 'Sugar Magnolia' and return for an encore of the Stone's 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction'..   Grateful Dead Community War Memorial Auditorium Rochester, NY  11/8/85 - Friday    Two    Revolution ; Estimated Prophet -> Eyes Of The World -> Drums -> Space -> The Other One -> I Need A Miracle -> She Belongs To Me -> Sugar Magnolia Encore (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111116.mp3   My sincere thanks to the kind folks whose support allows me to keep publishing the Deadpod!!   Be Strong and love one another!

This week Sue Lawley's castaway is John Cale, a classically trained musician who went on to found one of the most influential bands of the 1960s, Velvet Underground. John Cale was brought up in a strict South Wales household. His maternal grandmother insisted that Welsh was the only language to be spoken in the house even though his father spoke only English. His childhood was solitary - he was an only child and his mother encouraged him to spend hours each day practising his piano playing, and he later took up the viola. He went on to have viola lessons at the Royal Academy of Music while also studying music at Goldsmiths' Teacher Training College in London. He was talent-spotted by Aaron Copland and awarded a musical scholarship to study in America, where he was part of the contemporary avant-garde music scene there, working with John Cage and LaMonte Young, until he met Lou Reed and the two formed Velvet Underground. Their first album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, remains their best known. Andy Warhol is credited as producer, it features Nico on vocals and the cover is the famous Warhol banana.
