This week on Toilet Radio: Gen X Correspondent Ian sits down with acclaimed film, video game, and television composer Bear McCreary. For folks unfamiliar, Bear has composed music for everything from Battlestar Galactica, God of War, The Walking Dead, and The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. Bear tells us the origins of his desire to put out heavy metal albums after working with Brendon Small, Serj Tankian, and Gene Hoglan on a track for Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019). Now on his second album of his Singularity arc, Bear tells us about getting every heavy hitter in hard rock and heavy metal to join him in releasing tunes. Gen X Ian presses Gene on drum quantization and sampling, the economics of recording drums, and sequencing music for a modern metal sound. Is releasing a metal record a sound financial investment? Hear it from a world-renowned musician himself, “Absolutely not!” This is an excellent interview. Enjoy! Music featured on this ‘sode: Bear McCreary – Black Box (feat. Joe Duplantier) This program is available on Spotify. It is also available on iTunes or whatever they call it now, where you can rate, review, and subscribe. DL, Evil, and Rachel dig into System of a Down's Toxicity (2001) — one of the biggest metal albums ever made, debuting at #1 the week before 9/11 and getting Chop Suey immediately pulled from radio. The central argument: Toxicity is not a nu-metal record. It's one of the most coherent political albums ever made — a sustained meditation on apathy, incarceration, the Armenian-American experience, and what happens when society stops giving a shit about each other. Prison Song, Needles, ATWA, and "somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep" hit completely different when you actually listen to what Serj Tankian is saying.Along the way: why "Chop Suey" was originally titled "Suicide" (and how the rename was pure SOAD genius), the story of Rick Rubin seeing them at the Viper Room in 1997 and immediately knowing, Daron Malakian's insistence the album fit on one side of a tape at exactly 40 minutes, the time signatures and hemiola that make Toxicity sound heavier than it should, and the direct sonic DNA connecting Faith No More's Epic piano outro to Chop Suey's ending. The influence arc: System of a Down directly cited Faith No More as a key influence — this episode is part of a two-week influence-to-influence series starting with The Real Thing.Scores: Rachel 10/10, Evil 10/10, DL 9.8/10.Part of Verse Chorus Verse's album-by-album deep dive series.System of a Down,Toxicity,Chop Suey,Serj Tankian,Daron Malakian,Rick Rubin, metal album review,Armenian rock,2001 albums, political metal,Faith No More influence, music podcast
DL, Evil, and Rachel dig into Faith No More's The Real Thing (1989) — the album that accidentally invented nu-metal, made "Epic" a cultural phenomenon, and was written entirely by a 19-year-old Mike Patton who had never met the band before. The central debate: did Epic's massive MTV success actually hurt Faith No More's legacy by making casual listeners think they were a one-hit wonder? And is The Real Thing even their best album — or does Angel Dust win that argument by a mile?Along the way: the story of how Courtney Love almost got the singer job, the Chuck Mosley firing, why Billy Gould's bass on this album is the direct ancestor of Fieldy in Korn, how "Surprise You're Dead" at the 38-second mark contains one of the best gear shifts in rock, and a deep dive into why Epic's piano outro resolves a tritone (the "devil's interval") that the main riff deliberately left open. The influence argument: System of a Down have cited Faith No More as a direct influence — and the parallels between Serj Tankian and Mike Patton, and between Daron Malakian and Jim Martin, are hard to ignore. This episode sets up next week's Toxicity deep dive.Scores: Rachel 7/10, Evil 8.5–9/10, DL 8.3/10.Part of Verse Chorus Verse's influence-to-influence album arc.Faith No More,The Real Thing,Mike Patton,Epic,alt-metal,nu-metal,1989 albums,Angel Dust,System of a Down, album review, music podcast, funk metal
This week is lucky #13 of our series called “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss side projects and solo releases from artists we love. This episode focuses on the mega-intense, stage-stalking, heavy-throated, part-animal, part-machine literary punk rock icon: HENRY ROLLINS! We really, really liked Coal Chamber's self-titled debut. We really, really do not like this. One of nu-metal's most famous cases of a sophomore slump, the band runs away from the silliness and giant riffs that made them popular on their first record in favor of something more serious, more professional, and less nu-metal. It turns out they are not very good at that. Bryan takes us back to hearing this album for the first time in 1999 and hating it instantly, giving us insight into being a Coal Chamber fan in the moment and not just now, in 2025. Unfortunately, it also sucks now, and the articles don't help the band either, as it's a wild collection of quotes about not wanting to be compared to Korn, writing "happy" music, and showcasing a band that was clearly at odds with each other over their sound. We are happy to announce the first-ever P.O.D. Kontest! We are giving away two sets of 2 General Admission passes for all 4 days of the Sonic Temple Music Festival! Head on over to patreon.com/thepodkast for all the details. Matt & Chris are back with another segment of Aftershocks TV, diving into Daron Malakian's recent comments. The System Of A Down guitarist revealed he is no longer interested in writing new music for SOAD. After 20 years since their last full-length album, Malakian plans to focus his creative energy on Scars On Broadway instead. This announcement adds to the growing tension between him and SOAD's lead vocalist, Serj Tankian. Although Tankian had previously expressed openness to creating new music, the two musicians have struggled to align on the direction of the band. Despite the ongoing divide, SOAD fans can look forward to 15 scheduled show dates around the world. Wake up!It's Week 5 in the college football world, and we at False Start could not be happier about it.As Cody Williams (Content Director, FanSided.com) presumably got up close and personal with Old Faithful, John Buhler (Staff Writer, FanSided.com) welcomed back the Penguin of Troy herself Alicia de Artola Castillo (Editor, FanSided.com) to the program.Alicia and Buhler then previewed a handful of intriguing games for Week 5. From Alabama-Georgia, to Illinois-Penn State, to Louisville-Notre Dame, to Oklahoma State-Kansas State, it's all there. Also, the Mountain West is falling to pieces with Pac-12 poaching happening and UNLV falling apart at the seams from a personnel standpoint only four weeks in.Plus, Oklahoma made a quarterback change and we had some thoughts about it.To finish up the show, Alicia and Buhler played Just Like Novocaine with System of a Down. Just like Serj Tankian's SOAD lyrics, this episode was all over the place!
Serj Tankian, lead singer of the heavy metal band “System Of A Down.” Tankian founded the group in 1997, releasing five studio albums, three of which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. His solo career also includes work as a painter, composer and filmmaker. The musician's new book is called Down with the System: A Memoir (of Sorts). On July 21st, 2024, Tankian came to the KQED studios in San Francisco to talk to Zack Ruskin about music and activism – particularly his work in support of Armenia, his ancestral homeland.
Today's guest makes me feel so excited and I just can't hide it. It's The Pointer Sisters. No. No it's not. Please welcome David Hakopyan of Antenna The End. And I have to thank Jamie Park and Teen Cancer America for connecting us. David grew up in one of the biggest Armenian communities in the world outside of Armenia, itself. He was influenced equally by rock and Armenian folk music. But music wasn't always his focus. For a while as a teen, he thought he might be an illustrator. He was the counterfeit Pushead guy in his school. And if that doesn't make sense, it will after you listen. Or go look up Pushead. He got serious about music when he started playing in an Armenian, revolutionary, folk, alternative rock band with Serj Tankian called Forever Young. After cheating on that band with another, he started Soil with Serj and Daron Malakian. David discusses the one and only live show they played and its biggest pitfall. David and his bands, like Apex Theory & Mt. Helium, have always been hyper-focused on sounding original, to the point of making sure no one was listening to the big rock stations in LA. They'd do spot checks on each others' radios. David's new band is Antenna The End. And you can absolutely tell that it's David's band. He started writing after the kinds of personal issues that get a guy writing music. He also tells me when he came up with the band's unique name. The debut EP will be out soon, but David gives us a sneak peak at the music and stories behind the band's formation and the music he's created. Check them out @antennatheend on Instagram & Facebook. Keep an eye out for the EP release in early August. And give him a call at…you know what, don't do that. BUT, follow us @PerformanceAnx on Instagram & Twitter. Reach out, we don't bite. Gaerea are gearing up to make a major announcement and we are excited to be a part of it! On this week's episode of The MetalSucks Podcast, we have an interview with Gaerea to discuss the band's next chapter, the release of their latest single “World Ablaze,” and how it was liberating to put that song out into the world. We also chat about the process that went into finding an identity in the heavy metal world and fighting to make sure it's not a toxic environment. Gaerea is nearing its 10th anniversary as a band, so the conversation took a bit of an introspective turn as we discuss how they want to continue making art, how they wish they can have the artistic talent of drawing, and how they're being more comfortable with the idea of letting some of the mystique of Gaerea slide so they can connect with fans at live shows. Petar and Sylvia discuss Serj Tankian's indifference if System Of A Down continues without him, Armored Saint vocalist John Bush giving Metallica praise for taking chances in their career, Nikki Sixx responding to criticism over Motlëy Crüe's single “Dogs of War”, and Oxbow breaking up in a way that just plain sucks. In his new memoir “Down With the System,” he shares his family's story and looks back on his career through the lens of his Armenian heritage. Serj joins Tom to talk about the origins of his activism, how System of a Down got on the radio, and whether or not you'll ever hear new music from the band.

We also discuss the band's approach of embracing the “quiet” on many of the songs, the comfort he feels in creating in music in an isolated space, and the approach they take on artwork for album covers. Things also take a turn for the philosophical, as the concept of “fate” comes up, how these days the truth requires compromise to communicate, the power of communication through music, longevity of creating art versus popular content, and the battle with being addicted the our phones. Petar and Sylvia discuss the passing of Steve Albini, the lesson he leaves behind with his approach as a engineer for heavy music, the return of Kittie with their first full length album in 13 years, Serj Tankian's comments on only wanting to do short tours for the fans, and Kerry King just needing to be a little less upfront of his conversation with Tom Araya.
