Folks, you don't need me to tell you this is a stressful time. Fortunately for us here in the good ol' US of A, we have several options for releasing stress. In this country we have the right to listen to music. Believe it or not music is strictly forbidden in some places. That's because the powers that be know music has a way to galvanize people like no other art form. Another way to relieve stress is to exercise your right to vote. It's the most valuable thing we have, this freedom of choice. It's such an incredible thing that people take it for granted. Well not anymore! With the future bearing down on us, we're enlisting the incomparable Nina Jo Smith to help us count down our favorite Songs About Choice. Use it while you got it, my friends! Howard Klausner, screenwriter for the new "Reagan" movie (starring Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller and Jon Voight), joins the show today. Klausner describes the origins of the creation of the film, its long and winding path (10+ years) to creating it, and his hopes for the film (in theatres today). Klausner, who worked on two campaigns for former president Jimmy Carter, shares "This is not a Republican movie. This is an American movie. It's an American story," adding, "I think the real secret to Reagan is he was a Democrat for 40 years of his life, and then he became a Republican...we're living in such a vitriolic time right now--you're either on this team or you're the enemy. He never looked at it like that." (WFIL is giving away tickets to the film through Thursday September 5 at 1159pm; enter on the CONTESTS page at wfil.com). Ian O'Connor, award-winning author, kicks off today's show to discuss his new book Out Of The Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers. O'Connor covers much ground--both on and off the field--ranging from Rodgers' grandfather (a seasoned combat pilot in WWII) through Rodgers' growing up, path to and accomplishments in football, as well as a number of other facets of Rodgers' life. O'Connor has also written four NY Times bestsellers: Coach K, Belichick, The Captain and Arnie & Jack (on legends Mike Krzyzewski (Duke basketball head coach), Bill Belichick (New England Patriots head coach) and Derek Jeter (NY Yankees shortstop), plus golf greats Arnold Palmer & Jack Nicklaus). This Sunday is the 2023 Out of the Darkness Walk for R.I.T.A. in Saratoga Springs, NY. Rita was a Doctor, a Partner, a beloved Friend. The acronym stands for remembrance, intervention, together, (we can raise) awareness.  Above Ground Podcast will be there as we have been since 2019. This walk is the most unique in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention family, in that a person is attached directly. The ladies who have affectionately become the Ritas, over the years, have allowed so many to share in the memories of their Rita. Healing and connecting is the point.    Whats up everyone? Welcome to episode two hundred twenty three of Above Ground Podcast. This week we are highlighting Sunday's walk at Saratoga Spa State Park at 9am. We are joined by repeat guest Dan Egan and Missy Stolfi, both of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Capital Region NY Chapter. It was great catching up with our friend Dan and the newest Capital Region NY Area Director Missy.    Please come out and show your support for the cause, even if you do not have a connection. Though, I believe most of us are closer than we think. There will be remembrance quilts, boards for you to write messages for loved ones. Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga will be providing rides again this year. We will have tables from lots of non-profit and agencies across Nippertown. Our friends at Healing Springs will be next to, Above Ground Podcast. Saratoga County Mental Health will be providing free NARCAN training. Speakers and ceremonies will round out this wonderful event.    Thank you for listening to episode two hundred twenty three of Above Ground Podcast. SHAWN JUSTICEShawn has been a filmmaker since his teens, establishing his production company at 19 years old in 1989. He did corporate and commercial work to pay the bills, but has always had a heart toward Kingdom stories. He started writing screenplays in 1992 and eventually produced and directed his first feature film in 1999, GOING THE DISTANCE, partnering with the Family Research Council for distribution.Shawn continued to write multiple screenplays and serve his corporate clients knowing one day the doors would open to producing other films. What he didn't know is that it would be his son's passing in 2012 that would provide the funds to be able to do this. Caleb Justice is named as the sole Executive Producer of THE RECONCILER movie shot in 2014. Shawn has since gone on to direct and produce the films OUT OF THE DARKNESS, A MURDER OF INNOCENCE, and THE NARROW ROAD. He also sold his script JUSTICE that eventually became the film with the same title now on Netflix. It wasn't until 2021 that he directed his first short film, LUCIFER AND THE FATHER, created by his friend Scott Galbraith. Shawn involved his wife, Sara, to re-write the script weeks before shooting. The short film has received multiple awards and is now serving as a pilot of a television series. Their oldest son, Joshua, has worked with his father on all of the film projects since THE RECONCILER.Shawn is currently continuing to serve his corporate clients, but is in talks with multiple groups to sell existing screenplays, partner with others on documentaries and films, as well as take on much larger films as a for-hire production company. It's about to get even more interesting.SARA JUSTICESara has always had an artistic bent. She helped as an Art Director for a few scenes in GOING THE DISTANCE. She also was an Assistant Editor to Shawn on OUT OF THE DARKNESS and other trailers. Knowing she had skills, Shawn asked her to be the Production Designer on A MURDER OF INNOCENCE, THE NARROW ROAD, and LUCIFER AND THE FATHER.Although Sara has reviewed and provided insight into previous screenplays of Shawn's, LUCIFER AND THE FATHER is the first where she has worked alongside him to labor together in writing something new. She may have hung up her Production Designer title, but if the short film becomes a series, the plan is for her to work with Shawn on future episodes as a Writer.Sara has mainly focused her attention on raising her four children with Shawn. Three of them are now adults. The lessons God has taught her and Shawn through the passing of their second son who loved Jesus with all his heart has helped strengthen their marriage and the value of their time earth-side.

Why do we need to talk more about suicide prevention? - In conversation with Jennie Baird and Zip Nguyen

❓What should I do if I have suicidal thoughts?❓After someone commits suicide, what is it like for their loved ones?❓What can we all do to contribute to suicide prevention and postvention?Jennie lost her son, Henry, to suicide almost 10 years ago. He was a sophomore studying Art and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. In Jennie's words: “Henry was the funniest, most creative person I knew. He and I had shared professional interests and he worked as an intern at NVIDIA the summer before he died and planned to intern at Dropbox the following summer.” In this episode, our CQO Zip Nguyen and Jennie Baird (EVP and Managing Director in Digital News and Streaming at BBC Studios) will be going through a series of questions chatting about Jennie's personal story and why we need to continue raising awareness for suicide prevention. Please tune in for an inspiring conversation about how Jennie and her family have been coping with the loss of their loved one, how she #bloomincrisis through her grief and the message that she wants to spread regarding suicide prevention and postvention. We also want to spotlight the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Overnight Walk fundraising event. The Overnight Walk runs from dusk to dawn on June 4 in NYC and traverses  over 20 miles around Manhattan to support AFSP to reduce suicide rates by 25% by 2025. Please consider supporting Jennie Baird and her team in the Overnight Walk to raise funds for AFSP – You can join Jennie's team, or click on “Roster” to help her team members meet their targets here. --------------------About Jennie Baird: Jennie is a digital media executive with over 30 years of experience bridging content, technology, and product. She currently serves as EVP and Managing Director in Digital News and Streaming at BBC Studios. Jennie is married to Christophe Armero with whom she raised 5 children. The couple co-facilitates a monthly suicide bereavement support group, in memory of their son Henry, who died by suicide at age 19 in 2012.  Bloom in Crisis is the embodiment of hope — it is a belief, a practice, a state of being that empowers you to skillfully regulate emotions, build spiritual resilience, enhance self-awareness, unleash the potential of your mind, foster a grateful heart, cultivate joy, nurture positive energy, promote inner peace, grow self-compassion and compassion for others, embrace the present moment, derive wisdom from introspection, transform pain into grace, recognize positive possibilities even in adversity, and actively shape your narrative, ultimately leading to a happy and fulfilled life (with a touch of style!)Welp... you're probably not going to remember all of these, and neither am I (!) which is why internalizing the concept of "bloom in crisis" instead of trying to memorize what it means is important. Luckily, we can all do it by practicing consistently. While I'm incredibly grateful for my journey, I know firsthand how painful and lonely it is to go through tough times alone — it urges me to give back and help others as much as I can in my lifetime. Bloom in Crisis has been transforming me and many others for the better, and I would love for you to give it a try!Believing that everyone is a bloomer and we #bloomincrisis together, I founded Bloom in Crisis to share with you how I practice it and what I've learned throughout my journey, which, I hope, will be helpful for you in yours.-Zip xx----------About Zip Nguyen: Zip was born and raised in Vietnam. When she was just under 18, she moved to the US for college and has been living there since. She started her first full-time job at New York Magazine then moved to the BBC at the end of 2019, currently leading Business Intelligence, Pricing & Yield in the Americas region in Ad Sales at BBC Studios. Besides her main job, she is also a BBC Senior Leadership Team Advisor alumnus and Deputy Chair of BBC Studios Next Generation Board alumnus. She finds fulfillment in giving back to the next generations and inspiring others to overcome challenging times. Zip is the founder and CQO (Chief Quarterlife-crisis Officer) of Bloom in Crisis, and host of the Bloom in Crisis podcast and YouTube channel (Zip's sharing reflects her original and independent thinking and does not represent the opinions of any other organizations that she is involved with.)----------

Gaea Star Crystal Radio #479 is an hour of visionary improvised music from the Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, acoustic guitar, ukulele, Native flute and dulcimer, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drums.  Recorded live in late January 2022 at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today's show begins with a jazzy Native flute workout before settling into a dynamic version of Mariam's lovely "Sail On".  Next up is the evocative "Out Of The Darkness", a bittersweet piece that derives a certain melancholy from a decidedly Eastern European mode and harmonic scheme.  Rising from the miasmatic ending is another piece, "Seasons Come and Seasons Go", a rolling, reverent nature prayer that picks up steam with Mariam's compelling poetry.  "Silent Majesty" is another mystical, hypnotic piece characterized by a distinctive harmonic setup that cedes a very attractive stage to Mariam's drifting vocal.  As tends to happen when Mariam plugs in her dulcimer and lays down a driving, rhythmically upbeat drone, "The Snow Queen She Came" is a driving, kinetic piece of fast folk with inspired piano and a fine rhythm track from Craig.  Several iterations, each with its own distinct character spool out from the original harmonic framework, are born from the basic concept and "The Snow Queen She Came" becomes a series of compelling, rocking, unfolding chapters. But, they would say it's all about the teens. After all, it is a movement of teens helping teens to end the epidemic of suicide in their peer group. Notice I say peers.  What Kari wants everyone to know is that teens are incredible, resilient, smart and the future leaders. Let's empower them not handcuff them. They need to be listened to, respected and loved for who they are and who they will become.  We thank Kari for taking the time to speak with us. Please follow Robbie's Hope at the links below. We are going to talk about how not even 6 months ago I was in a very dark place mentally and what I did to get out of it.My goal for this episode is to wake you up, discover that fire that is deep inside of you, and fan it until it grows like wildfire and the darkness can no longer control you!I read a Facebook post the other day that said: I don't think people realize how much strength it takes to pull your own self out of a dark place mentally, so, if you've done that today, I AM PROUD OF YOU.And that is so true. I am proud of you for trying today. I am proud of you for moving forward.Remember,We are all in this world together. We need to start focusing on a brighter future for one another.Let's start building each other up and encourage each other to BE the CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.The only way for YOUR world to change in a positive way, IS BEING the change you want to see.Okay? In this week's episode, we are talking about mental health, depression awareness, and suicide prevention as a dedication to a dear friend of mine that we lost last year. I speak with Andrea Thomas Hand, singer and songwriter out of Nashville. Andrea has toured with Carrie Underwood as a backup singer, appeared on the Voice, and is currently working on a television show, "The Sound of Hope" in which she will raise awareness for mental health while encouraging alternative solutions for a lifestyle change through spiritual and mental steps rather than turning to negative influences and toxic choices. The show will eventually evolve into a non-profit as well as a tour. Andrea's family was closely affected by suicide last year as she lost her cousin to the battle with depression. She has since committed to using her voice to create a platform for this conversation. You can find Andrea at wwww.andreathomasofficial.com. She's on Instagram @andreathomas and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/andreathomasmusic/.My friend, Kristin Navarro with Whitehorse Steakhouse at Oak Meadow Ranch also shares with us about her family's struggle with losing a loved one to the same mental health battle. Kristin is real and raw and committed to supporting families that have gone through this same tragedy. She discusses the family's struggles with PTSD and depression after the loss. As a result of this experience along with her background in law enforcement and first hand experience with suicide, she and her family have founded a non-profit organization. The Renay E. Watt Memorial supports suicide awareness and prevention. You can find Kristin on Instagram @mrs.navarro_dallastx and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1035735632And, wrapping the episode up is my dear friend and Pastor's wife, Dawn Simmons. Dawn provides lay minister counsel and speaks to the stigmas surrounding mental health within the church and the christian community. She speaks to the tangible steps one should take in the midst of depression and how the church should be there to love on them without providing judgement. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts, or have questions, you can email her: dawn@friendshipchurch.com.As always, we would appreciate it if you could subscribe, share, and write a review, that will help us get this story out to more people that need to hear this message.

Tonight's special guest is Michelle Bless, survivor, activist and author of the book "Out of the Darkness: the Michelle Bless Story" in which a young girl is abused by her family and ostracized for being associated with Satan. Out of the Darkness is her story of redemption. Born in the northeastern United States to parents from the Caribbean, author Michelle Bless was raised in a home of violence and suspicion. Her father beat her mother and siblings but spared Michelle because of her perceived association with Satan. Even so, this did not save her from other abuses: she witnessed incidents of violence, incest and other horrible, unthinkable acts. One hot summer day in 1997, Michelle writes, she "was introduced to the Lord and denounced Satan," thus beginning the process of giving her life to the Lord. After two years of demonic attacks, she was fully delivered and never looked back. Today she lives for the Lord. Ms Bless says her firsthand knowledge of how low a life can plummet to the depths of despair enables her to understand and relate to what others are facing as they struggle to find God in their lives. Michelle is on a mission to bring as many lost souls to God as possible.
