Spring-Heeled Jack and the Gorbals VampireThis week, we explore two British urban legends: the Gorbals Vampire and Spring-heeled Jack.In 1954 Glasgow, hundreds of children armed with knives and homemade weapons descended on the Southern Necropolis cemetery hunting a supernatural entity with iron teeth that allegedly killed two local boys.Meanwhile, in Victorian London, Spring-heeled Jack terrorized citizens from 1837 to 1904, described as a well-dressed gentleman with glowing eyes who could make impossible leaps, breathe blue and white fire, and attack victims with metallic claws. Both cases sparked significant paranormal panic and were documented in the Victorian press. We debate whether these incidents represent historical mass hysteria or genuine supernatural encounters with entities from British folklore. In addition, we examine how Scottish urban myths, Victorian era monsters, and paranormal history might explain the phenomena, while considering how both stories reflect societal fears of their time.Or is it possible that Spring-heeled Jack might have been a demonic figure or one of the mysterious jumping entities from British supernatural folklore? Could the Gorbals incident represent children's folklore and cemetery legends manifesting during a period of societal tension?Patreon: Support Believing the Bizarre and get tons of extra content by joining our Patreon. For updates, news, and extra content, follow Believing the Bizarre on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterDiscordShop Merch: You can rep Believing the Bizarre and buy some unique merchWant to send BTB something? A life full of mentors and a-ha moments. That has been the story of this week's guest, Rob Brown, a big tall Scotsman indeed. Rob was born in 1960 in the Gorbals, tenement housing in Glasgow, sharing one toilet among five families. That's just how things were. Rob's mother scrubbed the steps of the school on her hands and knees with a brush. That's where he says he probably got his work ethic from. Rob has gone on to have a very successful career around the world. He's good at leading people and understanding the processes of big companies. Rob now heads up Fruit2Work, a social enterprise hiring people with lived experience of the criminal justice system. They deliver fruit and milk to businesses around Melbourne. Fruit2Work has had a 0% recidivism rate among its employees and now hires over 100 people. Rob also recently began Recycle4Change, a container deposit scheme in North Geelong hiring women and youth affected by the criminal justice system. He's a big fella with a big, warm personality and it was a pleasure learning about where he came from and what his life journey has been like to now. Keep up the great work, Rob, and thanks for joining us this week.fruit2work.com.aurecycle4change.com.au

A creature that had the appearance of a man, but the teeth and prowess of a beast; a creature that had claimed the lives of two innocent children, and was still on the loose... What would you do? The spellbinding story of the Gorbals Vampire, a legend that once terrified and fascinated the children of Glasgow, Scotland, in the autumn of 1954. A legend that sparked a frenzy of fear and courage, as hundreds of children took up arms against the monstrosity rumoured to sulk in the Southern Necropolis... Craving more episodes? Gochugaru is a type of Korean chili powder made from dried red chili peppers. It has a vibrant red color and a slightly sweet and smoky flavor, with a medium level of spiciness. Gochugaru is a staple ingredient in Korean cuisine and is used to add heat and depth of flavor to many dishes, including kimchi, stews, soups, and marinades. It is also used as a seasoning for meat, fish, and vegetables, and can be added to sauces and dressings for an extra kick of flavor. I'd like to share a potential educational resource, "Conversations Behind the Kitchen Door", my new book that features dialogues with accomplished culinary leaders from various backgrounds and cultures. It delves into the future of culinary creativity and the hospitality industry, drawing from insights of a restaurant-industry-focused podcast, ‘flavors unknown”. It includes perspectives from renowned chefs and local professionals, making it a valuable resource for those interested in building a career in the culinary industry. Get the book here! Gochugaru in the US restaurant scene In recent years, Gochugaru has gained popularity outside of Korean cuisine and has been used by chefs and home cooks in a variety of dishes, including tacos, burgers, and cocktails. Some US restaurants and bars that have used Gochugaru outside of Korean restaurants include: Mama Rabbit Bar in Las Vegas, Nevada: This bar features a Gochugaru Margarita on their menu, which is made with Gochugaru-infused tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, and Cointreau. Nudo Noodle House & Bar in Boston, Massachusetts: This restaurant serves a Gochugaru Ramen, which is a spicy noodle soup made with Gochugaru, pork broth, pork belly, and soft-boiled egg. The Gorbals in Brooklyn, New York: This restaurant offers a Gochugaru-rubbed Ribeye Steak on their menu, which is seasoned with Gochugaru, garlic, and salt. City Mouse in Chicago, Illinois: This restaurant features a Gochugaru Chicken Sandwich, which is made with Gochugaru-marinated chicken, pickled vegetables, and gochujang aioli. Nightshade in Los Angeles, California: This restaurant serves a Gochugaru Fried Chicken dish, which is coated in a spicy Gochugaru glaze and served with pickled daikon and carrots. These are just a few examples of US restaurants and bars that are incorporating Gochugaru into their menus. As the popularity of Korean cuisine continues to grow, we can expect to see more chefs and home cooks experimenting with this flavorful ingredient in a variety of dishes. Top Korean Dishes using Gochugaru Kimchi: Gochugaru is an essential ingredient in traditional Korean kimchi, a fermented cabbage dish that is a staple in Korean cuisine. It gives the dish its characteristic spicy flavor and vibrant red color. Tteokbokki: Tteokbokki is a popular Korean street food made with chewy rice cakes, fish cakes, and a spicy red sauce made with Gochugaru. It is often garnished with sesame seeds and green onions. Jjigae: Jjigae is a Korean stew that can be made with a variety of ingredients, such as tofu, seafood, or pork. Gochugaru is often used to add spice to the broth, along with other seasonings such as garlic and soy sauce. Bulgogi: Bulgogi is a Korean beef dish that is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and Gochugaru, among other ingredients. It is often grilled or stir-fried and served with rice and vegetables. Bibimbap: Bibimbap is a Korean rice bowl dish that typically includes a variety of vegetables, meat, and a fried egg, all served over a bed of rice. Her father was a television director and producer, and her mother an interior designer. She loved playing with clay since she was a child and spent every holiday with their parents, siblings, and cousins in the countryside of the Scottish borders or surrounded by the sea on her visits to her grandparents on the island of Guernsey. She went on to study fine arts at university, and then onto become an artist in earnest while a student. She also experimented with life performance, stage lighting and costume design, and formed a dance company with her friends to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, Fringe and other festivals. After graduating, she worked as a community artist in Glasgow for three years, introducing locals to the joy of art. She was then a founding director at the Glasgow Sculpture Studios. Wanting to learn how to carve, she won a place as an assistant for the Scottish sculpture workshops, International Stone Carving Symposium in 1988. There she met Hironori Katagiri. Kate has completed many large-scale site-specific public sculptures in Scotland, Europe, Lebanon, America in Japan. Davatzes joined the company as CEO in 1983 just as A&E Networks was formed through the merger of fledgling cable channels Entertainment Network, owned by RCA and the Rockefeller family, and ARTS Network, owned by Hearst and ABC. A+E Networks today is a 50-50 joint venture of the Walt Disney Co. and Hearst Corp. Davatzes served as CEO emeritus. Davatzes led the company's launch of the signature A&E Network (an amalgam of Arts and Entertainment) in 1984 and History Channel in 1995 (History formally dropped “Channel” from its moniker in 2008). He served as CEO of the parent company through 2005, when he was succeeded by protege Abbe Raven, who started at the company as a secretary. Davatzes was known for promoting educational outreach and the importance of industry R&D during his run at A&E Networks. The company later expanded to include the Lifetime cable channel as well as more recent entries like lifestyle channel FYI and Lifetime Movie Network. Disney executive chairman Bob Iger hailed him as a “towering figure in the early days of cable television (who helped) build some of the most iconic brands in the media landscape.” Iger added that he was “a person of true integrity.” He died in Wilton, Connecticut.24th August 2021 – Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts passes away at 80 - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-25/rolling-stones-drummer-charlie-watts-dies-at-age-80/100404658Charlie Watts, the drummer who provided the backbone of the Rolling Stones' songs for more than half a century, has died. Watts "passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family," his publicist Bernard Doherty said. "Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones, as one of the greatest drummers of his generation." The quiet, elegantly dressed Watts was often ranked with Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and a handful of others as a premier rock drummer, respected worldwide for his muscular, swinging style as the band rose from its scruffy beginnings to international superstardom. He joined the Stones early in 1963 and remained over the next 60 years, ranked just behind Jagger and Keith Richards as the group's longest lasting and most essential members. Watts stayed on, and largely held himself apart, through the drug abuse, creative clashes and ego wars that helped kill founding member Brian Jones, drove bassist Bill Wyman and Jones' replacement Mick Taylor to quit and otherwise made being in the Stones the most exhausting of jobs. The Stones began, Watts said, "as white blokes from England playing black American music" but quickly evolved their own distinctive sound. Watts was a jazz drummer in his early years and never lost his affinity for the music he first loved, heading his own jazz band and taking on numerous other side projects. He had his eccentricities — Watts liked to collect cars even though he didn't drive and would simply sit in them in his garage. But he was a steadying influence on stage and off as the Stones defied all expectations by rocking well into their 70s, decades longer than their old rivals The Beatles. He died in London with his family around him.25th August 2021 – Linux turns 30 - https://www.zdnet.com/article/linus-torvalds-on-linuxs-30th-birthday/ In 1991, Unix was an important but secondary x86 operating system. That year, on August 25, a mild-mannered Finnish graduate student named Linus Benedict Torvalds announced on the Usenet group comp.os.minix that he was working on "a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." No one knew it, not even Torvalds, but the technology was going to change forever. Thirty years later, Linux rules IT. Almost all major websites -- including Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia -- run on Linux. It's the same with the clouds. Even on Microsoft's own Azure, the most popular operating system is Linux. As for supercomputers, all 500 of the world's fastest 500 supercomputers run Linux. Thanks to Android, Linux is also the most popular end-user operating system. Not bad for a hobby operating system! In those very first days, Linux wasn't formally known as Linux. Torvalds explained, "Linux was my working name, but I never wanted to release it as Linux. Linux was a perfectly good working name, but if I actually used it as the official one, people would think that I am an egomaniac and wouldn't take it seriously. So I chose this very bad name, "Freax," for "Free Unix." Fortunately, the first Linux administrator Ari Lemmk, decided Freax was a silly name too. Hence, he actually named it Linux because he thought this internal project name was Torvalds first choice.Remembrances25th August 1822 – William Herschel - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_HerschelGerman-born British astronomer and composer. He frequently collaborated with his younger sister and fellow astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel. Born in the Electorate of Hanover, William Herschel followed his father into the military band of Hanover, before emigrating to Great Britain in 1757 at the age of nineteen. Herschel constructed his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars. Herschel published catalogues of nebulae in 1802 (2,500 objects) and in 1820 (5,000 objects). The resolving power of the Herschel telescopes revealed that many objects called nebulae in the Messier catalogue were actually clusters of stars. On 13 March 1781 while making observations he made note of a new object in the constellation of Gemini. This would, after several weeks of verification and consultation with other astronomers, be confirmed to be a new planet, eventually given the name of Uranus. This was the first planet to be discovered since antiquity, and Herschel became famous overnight. As a result of this discovery, George III appointed him Court Astronomer. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and grants were provided for the construction of new telescopes. Herschel pioneered the use of astronomical spectrophotometry, using prisms and temperature measuring equipment to measure the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. In the course of these investigations, Herschel discovered infrared radiation. Other work included an improved determination of the rotation period of Mars, the discovery that the Martian polar caps vary seasonally, the discovery of Titania and Oberon (moons of Uranus) and Enceladus and Mimas (moons of Saturn). Herschel was made a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1816. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when it was founded in 1820. He died at the age of 83 at Observatory House, Windsor Road, Slough Herschel's epitaph is Coelorum perrupit claustra (He broke through the barriers of the heavens).Famous Birthdays25th August 1819 – Allan Pinkerton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_PinkertonScottish–American detective and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton first became interested in criminal detective work while wandering through the wooded groves around Dundee, looking for trees to make barrel staves, when he came across a band of counterfeiters, who may have been affiliated with the notorious Banditti of the Prairie. After observing their movements for some time he informed the local sheriff, who arrested them. This later led to Pinkerton being appointed, in 1849, as the first police detective in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1850, he partnered with Chicago attorney Edward Rucker in forming the North-Western Police Agency, which later became Pinkerton & Co, and finally Pinkerton National Detective Agency, still in existence today as Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations, a subsidiary of Securitas AB. Pinkerton's business insignia was a wide open eye with the caption "We never sleep." As the US expanded in territory, rail transport increased. Pinkerton's agency solved a series of train robberies during the 1850s, first bringing Pinkerton into contact with George McClellan, then Chief Engineer and Vice President of the Illinois Central Railroad, and Abraham Lincoln, the company's lawyer. When the Civil War began, Pinkerton served as head of the Union Intelligence Service during the first two years, heading off an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland while guarding Abraham Lincoln on his way to Washington, D.C. as well as identifying troop numbers in military campaigns. His agents often worked undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers to gather military intelligence. Pinkerton himself served on several undercover missions as a Confederate soldier using the alias Major E.J. Allen. He worked across the Deep South in the summer of 1861, focusing on fortifications and Confederate plans. This counterintelligence work done by Pinkerton and his agents is comparable to the work done by today's U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agents in which Pinkerton's agency is considered an early predecessor. He was succeeded as Intelligence Service chief by Lafayette Baker; the Intelligence Service was the predecessor of the U.S. Secret Service. His work led to the establishment of the Federal secret service. Despite his agency's later reputation for anti-labor activities, Pinkerton himself was heavily involved in pro-labor politics as a young man. Though Pinkerton considered himself pro-labor, he opposed strikes and distrusted labor unions. He was born in Gorbals, Glasgow.Events of Interest25th August 1957- The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly premiered in Japan - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204691/ A star is born! On this day in 1957 (in Japan), The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly took to the silver screen for a monster of a pairing! Directed by Mitsuo Murayama, the SciFi/Fantasy starred Ryûji Shinagawa and Yoshirô Kitahara; and here's the plot summary: "A ruthless serial killer with a peculiar method of stalking and killing his victims comes face to face with a police officer turned invisible by a scientific experiment. Who will emerge triumphant?" In the late 1950s, in the United States this film was announced, and stills were published, under the English language title "The Murdering Mite." This film shares part of its Japanese title with the Japanese release of the much better-known 1958 U.S. science fiction film The Fly, which was released in Japan as Fear of the Fly Man (ハエ男の恐怖 Hae Otoko no Kyōfu), though with the 'Fly' in "Fly Man" spelled in katakana rather than kanji characters. While both films feature "fly men," The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly actually predates the latter film by almost an entire year.25th August 1989 – Voyager 2 spacecraft makes its closest approach to Neptune, the last planet in the Solar System at the time, due to Pluto being within Neptune's orbit from 1979 to 1999 - https://www.wired.com/2010/08/0825voyager2-neptune/ Voyager 2 makes its closest encounter with Neptune, passing just 3,000 miles above the cloud tops of the most distant planet in our solar system. The Voyager 2 space probe has been our most productive unmanned space voyage. It visited all four of the outer planets and their systems of moons and rings, including the first visits to previously unexplored Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 found four rings and evidence for ring arcs, or incomplete rings, above Neptune. That means all four of the gas giants in our solar system have rings. Neptune's, however, are very meager compared to the magnificent rings around Saturn. In the late 19th century, astronomers thought that an unseen Planet X was influencing the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. The observed positions of the two planets and their calculated positions differed. Among those astronomers convinced of the existence of Planet X was Clyde Tombaugh. In 1930 while scanning areas of the sky for Planet X, he found Pluto. When Voyager 2 flew by Neptune, it took very precise measurements of Neptune's mass and found it to be about 0.5 percent less massive than previous estimates. When the orbits of Uranus and Neptune were recalculated using the more accurate mass figure, it became clear that the imprecise number for Neptune -- and not the gravity of an unseen planet -- had caused the observed orbital discrepancies. After its encounter with Neptune, the spacecraft was rechristened the Voyager Interstellar Mission by NASA to take measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field, plasma and charged-particle environment. But mostly it's searching for the heliopause, the distance at which the solar wind becomes subsumed by the more general interstellar wind.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Was there a monster hiding in the cemetery? In 1954, the Glasgow Police Department began to receive concerned calls about hundreds of school children descending on a nearby necropolis. These children varied in age from teenagers, all the way down to toddlers who could barely walk. Many carried crucifixes or other protective talismans. More disturbingly, others were armed with knives and makeshift weapons as they patrolled the grounds. There is no doubt the children came looking for a fight with a monster. Did they get one?

The conversation travels from Dublin to Liverpool to Glasgow and even to London for Soho nights with Suggs from Madness who was once the Farms manager come drinking buddy. Celtic Soul Podcast Episode 55 with More than 90 Minutes, Editor Andrew Milne chatting to Charlie Fealy.Charlie Fealy is a singer, songwriter and front man of the legendary Glasgow Irish band The Blarney Pilgrims. Born in Dundalk, it was Glasgow where Charlie and his band would become part of the Celtic Match Day experience for so many Celtic fans and his music can be heard blasting out of supporters buses up and down the coast of Scotland on route to Paradise and on European away days. With the Blarneys iconic album “Granda Was A Celtic Man” now re-released on digital platforms including Spotify. Andrew and Charlie chat about the album, Charlie’s life growing up in Glasgow after moving from Ireland to the Gorbals at 3 years old and Kerry where he now calls home. Charlie talks about the bigotry he faced in Glasgow and also the decent people who educated him and his awakening to Celtic and what it stood for on his first visit to Celtic Park as a young boy. They chat about Celtic, music, politics and social issues as the conversation flows after almost two decades since they last spoke.Legendary gigs in Glasgow and Ireland come up in conversation including the Mean Fiddler in Dublin where another iconic album was recorded “Marching Down Sackville Street” and some new material that Charlie has written and hopes to record soon and who knows maybe a reunion and some live gigs to look forward to after these lockdowns. They talk about the songs that Charlie wrote for “Granda Was A Celtic Man album” and how it was written through the eye of a Celtic fan for the Celtic fans. Celtic is much more than a team who plays for 90 minutes to Charlie and that comes out through his music and also in this conversation. It’s fascinating to hear how the Glasgow Irish sound of the Blarney Pilgrims originated from and the musical pioneers who influenced Charlie along the way from America and closer to home in the pubs of Glasgow. If the London Irish sound was captured perfectly by The Pogues fussing of Céilí and Punk then the Glasgow Irish sound created by Charlie came from the drums of Republican Flute Bands and American Bluegrass. Influenced by some wise words from Luke Kelly, Charlie set out on his musical career in smoke filled Irish pubs in Glasgow from his Gorbals home with the conflict in Ireland never far from his thoughts when he sang or strummed a guitar. Charlie jumps in the Tim Time Machine and heads back to 1980 and into a packed Celtic Park when you could still bring a carry out in to enjoy the game. Both “Granda Was A Celtic Man” and “Marching Down Sackville Street” are both available to download and listen to on Spotify. In 1903, a series of animal attacks left the village of Great Wyrley on edge. George Edalji, a local solicitor, was thought to be behind the attacks. Tried and convicted, Edalji maintained he was innocent. Famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle took on the case as he believed it to be a miscarriage of justice. Rachael details events and the aftermath which changed UK Law. Staying in the UK but crossing the border to Scotland, Theo explores folklore transforming into hysteria. In 1953, a supposed vampire prowled the Gorbals South Necropolis and gobbled up the local children. Frightened and without adult help, the children of Gorbals took matters into their own hands... As always, we finish off with a dumb criminal. If you like Spree, please consider giving a 5 star review and follow us on social media. Twitter: @SpreePodcast.@TheGingerBolt. @RL_Reynolds. Jenny and Annie investigate real Scottish ghost stories as found in local newspapers in this light-hearted spooky episode. They begin in the town of Port Glasgow, where a family is being tormented by noises, spectral animals and some nasty phantom vegetables. The trusty journalist however suspects a hoax instead of a ghost. Next, they visit one of Scotland’s most haunted buildings: Fyvie Castle. They look at how the discovery of bones hidden within a wall of Fyvie Castle inspired ghost stories of Grey and Green Ladies. The local press covered these mysterious bones with much enthusiasm, so we have the words of people who experienced the discovery of the skeleton in the wall as it happened, and have their own ideas about the Green Lady. Finally, they explore a wraith in the Gorbals of Glasgow. We consider the sensational press of ghost stories, and what they can tell us about everyday lives and ideas of afterlives. Stories of Scotland is a multi-award winning Highland podcast, proudly recorded in Inverness in North of Scotland. We research our Scottish history, heritage, and mythology podcast using archives, books, museum objects, and oral histories from across Scotland.

This episode dives deeper into the work of High Rise Bakers: community bakers creating delicious nutritious bread in a shared kitchen on the ground floor of a high rise flat in The Gorbals area of Glasgow. Piers Gough co-founded his own architectural practice while he was still at college, at the age of only twenty-two. He made his name during the redevelopment of London’s Docklands, though you can also see his work in Liverpool (the golden “bling bling” building), in Nottingham, where he built a centre for Maggie’s cancer charity, and in Glasgow, where he designed the masterplan for the redevelopment of the Gorbals. He’s won numerous awards for his buildings, not least for his bright-green triangular public lavatory in London’s Westbourne Grove. And six of his buildings have been listed by English Heritage, protected for posterity. He’s been president of the Architectural Association, he’s a Royal Academician... which all sounds steady enough, but trying to sum up his style, the Architects Journal said: “One’s never certain whether one is in a town house, a country house, a castle, or a gigantic piece of sculpture.” In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Piers Gough reflects on the challenges of designing for the modern city, and on the influence of the accident that broke his spine and which at one point made him doubtful that he would ever walk again. He shares, too, the surprise and fun of becoming a father in his sixties. Music choices include William Walton’s “Belshazzar’s Feast”; Monteverdi’s haunting love duet “Pur ti miro”; Handel’s “Semele”; and Piers's favourite country-music track, “Truckstop Honeymoon”. A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3 Produced by Elizabeth Burke.
The UK is the fifth largest economy and has some of the cheapest bread in the world - is that something to be proud of, or is it a convenient outcome of a system that prioritises shareholder profit, fobs off economically deprived people with poor quality food, and throws away a third of what it produces? It’s so ingrained in us that cheap food is better for everyone, but in this episode we ask you to stop and really think - are we supporting a system that is efficient for lining the pockets of a few, whilst impoverishing everyone else? What if the real cost is our collective health, and the health of the planet? Bread is not just money, bread is nourishment, deliciousness, companionship, connectedness, pride, politics. In this episode we hear from bakers up and down the UK who are redefining the value of bread. Bakers who are making a stand for their communities and the planet. Bakers from some of the most economically deprived areas who are bringing meaning, intention and joy to their baking. Bakers who are being recognised for their craft and sharing the benefits with their local communities. This is about food networks, not food chains -- this is about reaching true efficiency that takes into account the whole system (health, environment, waste, community, joy), not just the financial balance sheet. The radical changes that bread has undergone are revealing of much wider truths about our relationships with food, to farmers, with the land, the environment, and with each other. If you eat food, you have a stake in this story. This year marks Lorraine Kelly's 35th year as a broadcaster and her 60th birthday. Her new book Shine shares her secrets for success. Amy Powney, creative director of sustainable fashion label Mother of Pearl, spent much of her childhood without mains electricity or running water when her parents sold their house to live off-grid in rural Lancashire. Have you ever wondered who decides what you learn in school? We have, and thanks to Scotland’s First Minister we were able to find out! Michael Berkeley welcomes the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, as his Private Passions. The first woman, the first Scot, and the first openly gay person to hold the post, she was appointed in 2009, having won many awards for her poetry collections since taking first prize in the National Poetry Competition in 1983. Most recently, 'Rapture' (2005) won the TS Eliot Prize, and her latest collection, 'The Bees', won the 2011 Costa Book Award for Poetry. Born into a Roman Catholic family in the Gorbals, a poor area of Glasgow, Carol Ann developed a passionate love of literature at school, and for a decade from the age of 16 she lived with the Liverpool poet Adrian Henri. She had two plays performed at the Liverpool Playhouse and received an honours degree in phoilosophy from the University of Liverpool. In 1996 she was appointed a lecturer in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and later became creative director of its Writing School. She was appointed Poet Laureate in 2009. Her work as laureate includes poems on the MPs' expenses scandal, the deaths of the last British servicemen who fought in World War I, David Beckham's tendon injury, and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Her poems, which explore everyday experience and a rich fantasy life, are on the school curriculum in the UK. A keen music-lover, Carol Ann Duffy learnt the piano as a child. Her choices include Chopin's E major Etude Op.10 No.3, which her mother loved to hear her playing; extracts from Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' and and Christy Moore singing a song with words by W B Yeats. This edition, first broadcast in June 2012, is part of Radio 3's celebration of British music - Private Passions' guests this month are four poets from across the UK.
