Friend of the Show Screen Time Kota (https://www.tiktok.com/@screentimekota) returns to discuss the 1985 sci-fi film Enemy Mine. This hidden gem of an ‘80s sci-fi film has everything you want: practical effects, elaborate sets, miniature spaceships, matte paintings, and incredible makeup. Even more impressive is the performance of Louis Gossett Jr. underneath the intricate alien makeup. He and Dennis Quaid (a human) get stranded on a planet together; their species hate each other more than anything else… but somehow, they'll need to learn to get along if they want to survive this. (They do.) Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where we dive deep into the shelves to bring you some of the most intriguing, thought-provoking, and often overlooked gems in cinema history. Today, we're venturing into the realms of science fiction and the boundaries of human perception with four films that, each in their own right, challenge our understanding of reality, humanity, and the universe at large.First up, we have "The Quiet Earth" from 1985. This New Zealand sci-fi classic explores the profound and eerie calm after a scientific experiment gone awry seems to leave a lone scientist as the last man on Earth. The film is celebrated not just for its intriguing premise, but also for its breathtaking final scene, which has had film fans arguing for decades. The solitude and desolation captured in the film are palpable, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate the more introspective side of science fiction.Next up is "Enemy Mine," also from 1985. This film stands out for its exploration of themes of racism, camaraderie, and survival under the most unlikely circumstances. Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.'s performances are the heart of this story. They portray two soldiers from opposing sides of an interstellar war, stranded on a desolate planet. Their journey from enemies to friends is a powerful commentary on understanding and tolerance that resonates just as strongly today.Moving on to a slightly earlier film, I am recommending the mind-bending world of "Altered States" from 1980. Directed by Ken Russell and based on the novel by Paddy Chayefsky, this movie takes us on a psychedelic journey through the human psyche. In it, William Hurt's character experiments on himself with a mixture of sensory deprivation and hallucinogenic drugs. The visual effects used to depict his experiences were groundbreaking at the time and remain impressively evocative, painting an often disturbing picture of the potential and peril of pushing the boundaries of human consciousness.Lastly, we have the environmental cautionary tale "Silent Running" from 1972. Directed by Douglas Trumbull, who was known for his special effects work on "2001: A Space Odyssey." This film tells the story of a botanist on a space station dedicated to preserving Earth's last natural environments. It's a poignant, ahead-of-its-time commentary on environmentalism and loneliness The highlights are Bruce Dern's compelling performance and the unforgettable presence of the small, yet endearing, service robots, Huey, Dewey, and Louie (love em). Each of these films explore themes that are as relevant today as they were when they were first released. From the solitude of "The Quiet Earth" and the unlikely alliance in "Enemy Mine" to the exploratory depths of "Altered States" and the environmental message of "Silent Running." Like all good SF films, they invite us to question, reflect, and marvel at the possibilities beyond our current understanding. So, whether you're a long-time fan of the genre or just looking for something different to watch this weekend, these films should provide plenty of food for thought. Thanks for joining me on this journey through the stars and the depths of the human mind. Until next time, keep those VCRs powered up.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Greetings, Pharaohradio family! All praise be to Yahuah Elohiym! In this wonderful episode today, Jayratedr talks on blunt and blatant levels of a control system that has been in power for a long time, under the guidance and guise of the rebellious one known as HaSatan, a.k.a., whom many deem as, Sama'EL...the venomous/poison one of God. The General Reptilian, Old Serpent-Dragon, Draconian (Revelation 12:9) who has his Reptilian seed and Hybrid-Royal family bloodlines running the world's systems (2Corinthians 4:4 & Daniel 2:41-43, Genesis 3:15; 49:17)! Stay tuned in as Jay goes deeper into the control system and talks about who these interdimensional and planetary, Fallen Angels/gods are. And why they are here and what they want to do to humans for the dominance of this Matrix reality and Earth
This week's episode on Enemy Mine comes live with sound effects as Kerri was dealing with a major thunderstorm during recording. So, apologies if this sounds a little rushed. Even if the plot of this episode isn't entirely new, it's always nice to see the Unas and Chaka again. Even if this is the last time we see them. Michael Rooker is excellent casting as Col. Edwards, the hard-headed military man present in every show. We also enjoy the double meaning of this week's episode title. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! This week on Catching Up On Cinema, Kyle and Trevor review Wolfgang Petersen's, Enemy Mine (1985)! An over-budgeted box office flop with a checkered production history, Enemy Mine (1985) is a charming, if uneven, sci-fi fable. On the subject of “checkered production history,” the story goes that director Wolfgang Petersen was courted to take the helm of Enemy Mine over 5 weeks into the films' production, after original director Richard Loncraine apparently failed to meet the producer's expectations. After director Petersen paused and rewound production to begin anew and remake the film from whole cloth, the production budget of Enemy Mine would essentially double. To make matter worse, the film failed to generate interest at the box office, and Enemy Mine would go on to be regarded as a financial failure. Despite failing to find an audience during its theatrical run, Enemy Mine has since gone on to become somewhat of a cult classic, largely on the strength of its handsome production design, and winning performances from both Louis Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quaid. It's a wacky comedy and a cornerstone of cinematic technology as Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler go back to 1933. Brad assigns Sons of the Desert to Jake, a Laurel & Hardy romp that draws provokes questions about the ever evolving state of comedy, and whether or not it's detrimental for film and television to include pop culture references for yucks. Then, after having a slight meltdown over his missed relationship with his grandparents, or perhaps because of it, Jake assigned Brad the original King Kong, the first movie that his grandfather saw in the theater. They talk about the tremendous visual effects in the film, and how the birth of the giant monster movie influenced the next century of movie-making. Other movies discussed in this episode: Son of Kong (1933), Cavalcade (1933), 42nd Street (1933), Duck Soup (1933), the Invisible Man (1933), King Kong (1976), Enemy Mine (1985), Shrek (2004), King Kong (2005), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Stan & Ollie (2018), Godzilla vs. Kong (2022), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
