Podcast Title: Blue Zones Part 2: Nicoya, Costa Rica Episode Description:In this episode of our podcast, hosts Amanda, Laura, and Kendra dive into part two of our Blue Zones book club, focusing on Nicoya, Costa Rica. The discussion is grounded in the insights from Dan Buettner's research on the world's healthiest places for living longer, as captured in his book and complemented by a Netflix series. . Key Points Discussed: Introduction to Nicoya, Costa Rica: The hosts discuss how this Blue Zone is known for its exceptional longevity, where men have twice the likelihood of living until 90 compared to the U.S., with significantly lower health expenditures. The Importance of Community and Lifestyle: The episode highlights the significant impact of community, traditional diets, and active lifestyles on longevity. Nicoyans engage in natural daily movements rather than structured exercise, emphasizing the role of environment and learned behaviors over genetics in longevity. Dietary Habits: Traditional diets in Nicoya focus on plant-based foods, particularly the "three sisters" of beans, corn, and squash. The preparation methods, such as soaking corn in lime, are discussed for their health benefits, including the prevention of rickets and the promotion of better bone health. Public Health Success: The effectiveness of Costa Rica's rural healthcare system, which focuses on preventative care and regular household visits, is credited with significant improvements in community health metrics like reduced infant mortality and increased life expectancy. Cultural and Environmental Factors: The discussion extends to the roles of faith, family bonds, and the sunny, dry climate of Nicoya in fostering a healthy, stress-reduced lifestyle. Challenges of Modernization: The hosts also touch on the challenges posed by increased connectivity, tourism, and the influx of modern lifestyle elements like junk food and social media, which may dilute traditional practices that contribute to longevity. Episode Conclusion:The episode wraps up with a call to action for listeners to integrate lessons from Nicoya into their lives, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong social connections, engaging in regular physical activity, and adhering to a diet rich in whole foods. The hosts remind listeners of the benefits of finding a purposeful life and the importance of community in achieving a healthier, longer life. Promotion:Listeners are encouraged to check out the hosts' online course, Wellness 911, which aims to transform demoralized doctors from "fried to fantastic." Details can be found at www.thewholephysician.com.

Dan Buettner, Blue Zones founder, a National Geographic Fellow and multiple New York Times bestselling author, discovered five places in the world – dubbed blue zones – where people live the longest, and are healthiest: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece, and Loma Linda, California. Eating the Shokuiku Way teaches parents how to raise their kids with the life-long health benefits of the Japanese way of eating. The Japanese culture is known for its longest life spans and lowest obesity rates. Every child can grow up with maximum intelligence, longevity, and quality of life using this method. Here, parents learn why it's essential to start these habits with their children (to prevent diabetes, allergies, and obesity), and get step-by-step instruction on not only what to feed their kids, but how. Including time-saving cooking tips, ready-to-go bento box recipes, and knowledge how to teach kids to make better food decisions – limiting carbs, maximizing whole foods, the importance of protein for cell growth and immunity—this work is your go-to guide for learning how to respect and honor food and its role in nourishing our bodies and minds. The blue zones are regions in 5 countries where some interesting health discoveries have been uncovered. Those countries are Costa Rica, Greece, Italy, Japan, and the US; the Nicoya region in Costa Rica, Ikaria Greece, Sardinia Italy, Okinawa Japan, and last, but not least, my state California US, and the region is Loma Linda CA which is in southern CA. They matter and are very important to our Project Weight Loss, because these zones are the places that have been found to house some of the healthiest individuals that have some of the longest lifespans. Basically, I am talking quality of life. We can take some of their teachings from what I am going to call The Blue Zone Maesters.   And because of the outcomes of the people that live there, these regions have been studied. To find out why people live so long and seem to be doing pretty well in these regions. In this episode, I want to focus on the wealth of lessons they give us. Dr. Gianni Pres, and Michel Poulain, published an article in the Experimental Gerontology journal speaking specifically to Sardinia Italy, where there was a high concentration of centenarians, all that means is people that were 100 years old or older. This work got lots of attention. And I think that's because one of the coveted thoughts out there is how can we as humans live longer, the so-called elixir of life.  What is the secret to a long life, but not just a long life, but not just a long life, but a great quality of life with the love of others and the love for ourselves. So, Dan Buettner is an amazing Maester whom took this work to a whole another level.  He has written many books and the book that reference in this episode primarily; the teachings and what I have learned is based on his book, Blue Zones, 9 Lessons for Living Longer, From the People Who've Lived the Longest.  And also, his article Power 9.  And what Maester Dan Buettner did is he went in search of other areas that also had this phenomenon. As a result, he added the other regions to the original location of Sardinia Italy. He is a National Geographic Fellow and an award-winning journalist and author. He is also a NY Times best-selling author and his written other books on this topic including a cook book. My respects to Maester Buettner and his work!(Blue Zones, 9 Lessons for Living Longer, 2012)(https://www.bluezones.com/2016/11/power-9/ , 2023)  https://www.buzzsprout.com/1991284/12687662-dr-t-colin-campbell-the-plant-based-diet-maester.mp3?download=true https://www.buzzsprout.com/1991284/12215220-dr-michael-breus-the-sleep-maester.mp3?download=trueLet's go, let's get it done.

Dan Buettner is a National Geographic Fellow and multiple New York Times best-selling author and joins us this week to share his work researching and documenting Blue Zones around the world. A Blue Zone is a geographically-defined and confirmed area of extreme longevity. Specifically, Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy, Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California, boast populations that live the longest and are the healthiest people in the world. What makes them live so long? Dan and his team of demographers have spent years researching these Blue Zones, documenting how these populations live and work.“We're spending $18 trillion a year on largely avoidable diseases. That number just keeps going up,” says Buettner. “We know these populations have a fraction of the heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia. “Why don't we focus on trying to set up our cities and our workplaces so they look more like a Blue Zone?”That's precisely what he and his team are doing now, working to create healthy communities across the United States, beginning with Albert Lea, Minnesota, where they built the foundation for the Blue Zones Projects. The Blue Zones books are inspirational for crafting better, healthier homes and workplaces, and we're thrilled to have Dan Buettner on the show this week to talk about his latest book, The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-Week Plan for a Longer, Better Life.

They might seem like random places around the globe, but they're actually the five locations where humans live the longest. Coined ‘Blue Zones,' there are nine major through lines with the people who live in those places, and scientists believe those common denominators create an environment for humans to live long, healthy, and happy lives. On today's episode, we unpack the diet and lifestyle of people who live in Blue Zones and how we can apply those principles to our daily life.  In this episode, we discuss: The importance of getting in daily low impact movement, like walking and gardening  The role that community rituals, like drinking tea or wine, play in how we age  What it looks like to live your life's purpose as your profession Tips for how to lower your stress levels and decompress  Creative ways to have a more plant-based diet  The trend of reverence and appreciation of the elderly in Blue Zones  How getting ‘smart' sun exposure can benefit your mental and physical health  Why having a strong social connection is crucial for longevity  END OF THE SHOW:  Corinne and Natalie introduce Hottie of the Week: Mandy Moore WINE RATING: https://www.vivino.com/US/en/domaine-de-l-amandine-cotes-du-rhone-villages-seguret/w/1221950?year=2016 (Domaine de l'Amandine Côtes du Rhône Villages 2016)  = 7 / Mandy  WRAP UP: To wrap up the episode, Corinne and Natalie play Unpopular Opinion. Corinne admits that she enjoys doing burpees, and Nat confesses that she's not much of a foodie and doesn't care about trying new restaurants.  We have a newsletter for our Am I community. Hey there friend! Welcome to the BE ENCOURAGED! Podcast. I am your host Jackie Brindle and I am so glad you pressed play today! If you haven't done so already — click subscribe … what are you waiting for! And if you feel inspired, excited, and encouraged after listening to the episode, don't forget to share it with your friends on IG world or write a raving review on Apple Podcast! It would fill up my bucket today and more people, just like you! Anyone here, pursuing your purpose?  Yup, – me too! Sometimes it doesn't look as linear as we imagined it would be. Sometimes we experience a variety of situations and circumstances along our pursuit in life. That's why today's conversation is going to be so impactful. Jasman Rolle is the guest speaker on this episode. He is a Christian creative coach with a heart to see others excel in their areas of giftedness. He has a heart to serve others with a purpose and on purpose. Jasman is a graduate of Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, with a degree in Music Marketing.  Jasman is an international-award-winning producer and songwriter, and has worked in a number of capacities within the Music industry. Rolle is the founder of Purposed 365 and Higher Level Agency and currently serves as the Director of Communications for One One 7 Entertainment and also serves as part of the artist management team at Noble Management.  One of the most important hats, Jasman wears, is being a family man! His beautiful and inspiring wife Nicoya have been married for 19 years and they have 2 beautiful daughters. Jasman sheds a light on different areas along his journey where God has planted seeds in his life, that at first didn't make much sense. As he intentionally pursued God and took some big leaps of faith — he soon realized that wherever God have him serving, it had a purpose.  The question I think we all ask ourselves in each season we are in is, How can we intentionally serve the NOW with purpose? How do we live intentionally every day to pursue what God has purposed us to do? Even if it doesn't make sense at the time.  I hope this message encourages you today and gives you the confidence you needed to hear to lead you onward in the pursuit of your purpose!  So let's saddle up my friends, let's get on your walk or run, finish folding the laundry, or grab your cup of coffee— but wherever you are – BE ENCOURAGED! Let's go! Jackie  Resources:  Learn more about Jasman Rolle at:  www.purposed365.com Follow on Social Media - Instagram @purposed365
