Psalm 128 A Song of Ascents“The quiet blessings of an ordered life are traced from the centre outwards in this psalm, as the eye travels from the godly man to his family and finally to Israel. Here is simple piety with its proper fruit of stability and peace: Kidner, 443. How are Psalms 127 and 128 linked?1.The word blessed- 127:5; 128:1-22. eat/eating in 127:2; 128:23. Behold in 127:3; 128:44. son/sons in 127:3, 4; 128:3, 65. fruit in 127:3; 128:3 McCann, 1200; Allen, 184-185.“Both sections of Psalm 128 display the same movement from third person (vv. 1, 4) to direct address (vv. 2-3, 5-6)” McCann, 1200.Both are viewed as wisdom psalms. These provide instruction in daily living in the manner of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job.128:1 Both this verse and vs. 4 emphasize fearing the LORD. Fearing the LORD is highlighted in Job 28:28; Psalm 111:10; Prov. 1:9; 9:10; Ecclesiastes 12:13. “To fear the Lord means fundamentally to recognize God's sovereignty and so to entrust life and future to God (see Pss. 2:11; 25:14; 31:19; 33:18; 34:9, 11; 60:4; 112:1; 115:11, 13; 118:4)” McCann, 1201. It means to walk in integrity- Ps. 26:1. Notice how universal these promises are- everyone. 128:2 When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands- The generalized statement of vs. 1 is personalized in vs. 2 with you. 128:3 Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine- Contrast Gen. 30:1-2; I Sam. 1:5-6; Luke 1:25 “Fruitful vine and olive shoot are fit similes of prolific fruit bearing” Miller, 408. “The vine was a symbol not only of fruitfulness (here explicitly so) but of sexual charm (Song of Solomon 7:8) and of festivity (Judges 9:13)” Kidner, 443. 128:5 The LORD will bless you from Zion- Pss. 14:7; 20:2. The godly man's concern extends beyond his own family to all the nation. The temple mount is the source of blessing for all- Ezek. 47:1-12. Zion is a key theme in the Songs of Ascents- Pss. 122:1-2, 6-9; 125:1-2; 126:1; 129:5; 132:31; 134:3. Blessing a key theme in these psalms- 129:8; 132:15; 133:3; 134:3.128:6 Indeed, may you see your children's children- This is actually your son's sons. This implies a long life- Gen. 48:11; Prov. 17:6Peace be upon Israel!- Pss. 122:6-8; 125:5; 134:3. The wordplay between Jerusalem in vs. 5 and peace in vs. 6.“The simple philosophy of the psalm, though presented in seemingly absolute terms, receives qualification even in the OT and certainly in the NT (cf. Job; Habakkuk 3:17-18; Rom. 8:35-39). But for many it must have proved a good working principle of life; such categorical promises of material endowment are not absent from the NT (Matt. 6:33; II Cor. 9:6-12; Phil 4:19) despite a shift to a less earthly emphasis” Allen, 186,Psalm 128 and Jesus128:3 “The imagery of vine and olive tree are reminiscent of the years of David and Solomon (I Kings 4:25) and the blessings associated with the Messianic era (Micah 4:4; Zech. 3:10). To sit under one's vine and fig tree was an expression of a state of tranquility, peace, and prosperity” VanGemeren, 796. 128:3 Jesus is the ultimate vine who causes us to bear fruit- John 15:1-8128:5 The LORD bless you from Zion- Isaiah 2:2-4; Micah 4:1-3128:6 Peace be upon Israel- Jesus is our peace- Eph. 2:14-17
October 14, 2024 Today's Reading: Amos 5:6-7, 10-15Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 12:13-32; Matthew 12:38-50They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth. (Amos 5:10)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Amos was a shepherd who tended sycamore trees. More important than that, though, was the truth that God, according to His good pleasure, made Amos a prophet to Israel. God made Amos a prophet… and wonderfully, it pleased God to send a sinner as a prophet to preach to sinners both to repent of their wickedness and to receive the forgiveness of God. But they hated Him Who spoke at the gate. Sure, they hated Amos… it was easier for them to do that… the truth, though, was not that they hated Amos… they hated God… because they hated the word of God that Amos was sent to speak. The Israelites took advantage of the poor, they cheated in business, they lied and shouted down those who told the truth, they neglected the beggars, and they remained silent when they should have spoken against the sin around them. They worshiped golden idols… every sin against God and men could be found among the people Amos preached to.Amos and all the Prophets were sent because God loved His people… and yet, all many of God's people could see were pesky men who came to lay out every sin before them. That usually had the result of making the people feel bad, and it made them angry. So it's important to know that Amos and the prophets weren't sent to make them feel bad… Amos was sent so that the people of God could see what was killing them… and in this, Israel was to see God's love and care for them: their dire need and lack, and God's abundant forgiveness and peace. How would the people know that God loved them? He'd sent them a prophet… God's mouthpiece to turn them to repentance… God's prophet to give them the forgiveness of God. Amos was booted out of Israel… Jesus was tortured and killed… St. Paul was ultimately killed in Rome… and a man is sent to preach and rightly divide law and gospel to you. In great love, our Gracious Lord loves us and sends a pastor to assure us that Jesus has removed our sin, shame, and guilt. He puts His words into our mouths, and He fights the powers of darkness. Jesus restores our voice to speak in faith toward Him and in fervent love toward one another. What a wonderful blessing and promise that even in the sinful and fallen world, we don't fight alone! In fact, we don't do the fighting at all; Christ does all that is needed for you. “It is finished,” He said… finished for you. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, You have commanded us to pray that You would send forth laborers into Your harvest. Of Your infinite mercy, give us true teachers and ministers of Your word who will fulfill Your command and preach nothing contrary to Your Holy Word. Grant also that we, being instructed, warned, nurtured, and comforted by Your Word, may do those things which are pleasing to You and profitable for our Salvation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.-Rev. Adam DeGroot, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rio Rancho, NM.Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Lackey is the pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Vine Grove, KY.In Embracing Your Lutheran Identity, Author Gene Edward Veith Jr. will guide readers through that heritage, starting with the Early Church and moving through the Reformation to Lutheranism today. Readers will learn about key people in the history of Lutheranism, from two teenagers who were the first martyrs of the Reformation, through the Saxon immigrants who left everything behind so they could practice Lutheranism freely, to the Lutherans who have stood strong for the faith in our own day.

In this Sermon Jesus points out to us the escalation of a prophecy that the Lord Jesus showed us concerning Russia. He shows us an article that points to Russia possibly escalating their weapons in the airspace of america which Jesus told us would happen. Jesus then points us to Isaiah 32 & 33 and Jeremiah 23 which speak of the Judgement of Israel Jesus is using this to speak to America. That America suffers from the same sins the churchs are not feeding his people properly. That his people Israel and the whole true church itself are to be Peace & a light to others because of Jesus & are destined to come out of that place ,out of the Bondage of Babylon and return to the promised land .This is the year of Jubilee! In Ezekiel we learn about the corruption but the function of the priests and that they would be retaught. We see this reteaching through Jesus. In Hebrews 12 & 13 that the priesthood would be offering up spiritual things for example the sacrifice of praise and the fruit of our lips. Corresponding with Numbers chapter 3. Israel Jesus used to be ashamed of being from the Mexican state of Oaxaca and speaking the local indigenous tongue, Triqui. When he moved to Salinas, California, a kid in his high school told Jesus he was destined to work in the fields nearby. But it was his knowledge of Triqui that sent him on a different path. A hospital in Salinas recruited Jesus to interpret for the increasing number of Triqui-speaking patients. It's part of an effort in California and beyond to expand medical interpretation to Mexico's many indigenous languages. This episode was reported by Nina Porzucki.
Episode Synopsis:I am not a fan of jigsaw puzzles–I don't have the patience to put them together, and I am too easily distracted by the shapes of the various pieces. So, I lose sight of the big picture, and then I get frustrated and attempt to jam pieces into the puzzle where they don't fit. Many people have the same trouble with the Bible. Why do we need to see the big picture? Why can't we just get to the signs of the end (the individual pieces)? What should we expect to happen before the Lord's return? What about the Antichrist? What about Israel? What about the seven-year tribulation period? What about the millennium? Why not just get to the good stuff? To read the Bible like this is to spend all of your time looking at the puzzle pieces without knowing what the picture on the box-top of the puzzle looks like. The Bible's expectation for the future (the box top) tells us how the puzzle pieces fit together. If we skip big picture stuff, we can easily fall into the errors which so many of our contemporaries make–predictions about the end with no way to connect the signs of the end to the biblical context in which the signs make sense. When we spend the time to look at the box top of redemptive history–we don't see an Antichrist, Israel, or a millennial age, anywhere near the center of the picture. What do we see? Or better, who? We see Jesus Christ–the mediator of the new and better covenant–who is the central image on the box top. Since Jesus has ascended to the Father's right hand, the big picture tells us that Jesus will return to raise the dead, judge the world, and make all things new. His return is our expectation, “the blessed hope.”We cannot successfully discuss, nor truly understand, the signs of the end apart from being clear in our minds about the big picture. We cannot understand the Antichrist, if we do not understand the Christ. We cannot understand the role of Israel, if we attempt to discuss Israel apart from the true Israel (Jesus). We might expect an earthly millennial age if we do not see our Lord's return as the final consummation–not some half-way step (a millennium) on the way to final consummation. When we glimpse the picture of Jesus on the biblical box top–it is immediately apparent that he is the sum and substance of all biblical prophecy. Jesus is the center of the picture which ensures the realization of all of God's covenant blessings for his people as well as the meting out of all the covenant curses upon those who reject his grace and mercy because they prefer to remain in their sins. All of the signs of the end point to things which occur on the last day, when the trumpet sounds, the heavens roll up like a scroll, and Jesus returns just as he promised. The signs of the end point to this glorious day when time becomes eternity. A Call for Endurance Revelation 12-13 by William Klock John's Revelation has prompted innumerable speculations over the last two millennia, ranging from the reasonable to the bizarre to the downright goofy. The most fruitful root of such speculations is, without a doubt, this character John calls the “beast”. Who is he? The Protestant Reformers pretty universally identified him with the Papacy for understandable reasons. Luther even wrote to Leo X and accused him directly of being the antichrist. Napoleon was accused of being the beast, mostly because he antagonized the Church—and if you finessed his name and title the right way it adds up to 666. Ditto for Hitler. Then there's JFK and the 666 votes he took in the electoral college—and his death from a head wound. I remember as a kid people speculating about Henry Kissinger, whose name adds up to 111, which is 666 divided by six. But Kissinger quickly gave way to Mikhail Gorbachev. I never heard anyone work up a 666 scheme, but the birthmark on his forehead was surely the “mark of the beast”, or so people said. Never mind that a lot of the same people in those days were telling us that the mark of the beast was somehow also credit cards or barcodes. Then there was Ronald Wilson Reagan—each of his names contains six letters. And Barack Obama. The day after he was elected, the Illinois Pick Three lottery numbers in his home state were 666. And, of course, Saddam Hussein, who some folks claimed was setting out to rebuild ancient Babylon. More recently there have been schemes to connect Bill Gates with the beast and COVID vaccines as his “mark”. Even Barney has fallen victim to these schemes. Not only was he corrupting our children, but “CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR”—yes indeed, it adds up to 666. All these attempts to identify John's beast really highlight the folly of unhitching the biblical text from its context. No one seems to take seriously Jesus' promise that these things would take place in the lifetime of his disciples. And no one seems to consider that John was writing to a cluster of churches in Asia Minor in a specific time and setting in order to encourage them to stand firm in faith as all hell was about to break loose around them. How would any of these identifications have made sense to the people of those churches? And how would knowing an obscure connection between the devil and Leo X or Henry Kissinger be any kind of exhortation to them? Context is everything and what John wrote to them had to make sense to them in their situation. So far, John's vision has revealed the climax of the story of God and Israel, culminating in judgement on the old, faithless Israel and the vindication of the new. These are the events that Jesus warned of in his ministry. But that's not the end of things. The gospel was not for Israel alone. Israel's ministry had always been to the nations; they simply never fulfilled it. Last week we saw the witness of the Jewish Church, fulfilling what Elijah and Moses had never been able to do: to cause the nations not only to notice the God of Israel, but also to stir faith in them. The judgement of the old Israel and the vindication of the new now broadens the horizon and, as I said last week, John's vision now begins, itself, to broaden. From Jerusalem, it now turns to the nations. With Chapter 12 John's attention is turned the sky. Imagine being out on a dark night and looking up into the depths of the sky and seeing the constellations. And as you look they come to life and you see a story unfold in the stars. That's, I think, the sense of what John sees now. Look at 12:1-6. And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days. John sees a woman, a dragon, and a child. The woman is in the pains of childbirth and the dragon poises itself to devour the newborn child. The child is where we should begin. This is the Messiah. John uses the language of Psalm 2. That's the song where Israel sang about the Lord's anointed King who would rule the nations with a rod of iron. It's the psalm where the Lord says of this Messiah, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you” (2:7). With that in mind we shouldn't take the birth of this child as his literal birth. In other words, this isn't Mary giving birth to the Baby Jesus. The signs John sees in the sky point to the resurrection of Jesus. Paul writes in Romans 1:4 that Jesus was “designated Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead.” And while John draws on the symbolism of Daniel to describe the dragon with his ten horns and seven heads, he tells us outright in verse 9 that this is the devil. The dragon is poised to devour the child, but the child—the Messiah—is rescued by God himself. At the cross the devil was sure of his victory, but at the empty tomb and in the ascension, his prize was snatched from him. With Jesus out of his grasp, he goes after the woman instead. Who is she? This is where it's crucial to remember to whom John is writing and why. Remember that Revelation is about tribulation, perseverance, and kingdom. It's meant to encourage the Church to stand firm even as the dragon pursues. God has rescued and vindicated his Messiah and he will do the same for his Church. For three and a half years the enemy will rage against Jerusalem as we've already seen, but God will prepare a place for his own. Using the language of the Exodus John describes the woman being cared for in the wilderness. But why does the dragon go after the woman? John goes on in verses 7-12: Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” John's vision sort of reveals what's going on behind the scenes—or in heaven or in the spiritual realm—at the cross. As much as Michael is traditionally seen as an archangel, I think there's good reason to equate him with Jesus himself and with the “angel of the Lord” in the Old Testament. His description in Daniel is similar to the description of Jesus in Revelation 1. And in Daniel, the angels are unable to overcome the demons until Michael comes to their aid. Whatever the case, the key to this victory is the blood of the lamb, and the devil himself is thrown down by the saints. This is interesting and encouraging. As much as it is Jesus who defeats the devil by his blood, John says that the saints win their own victory over the devil by his blood and by their testimony. Jesus said something very similar on the return of his disciples early in his ministry. He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom and they came back excited and saying, “Even the demons submit to us!” And Jesus said to them, “I saw satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority…over all the power of the enemy. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:18-20). Notice that it's by the victory of the saints that “the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come” and that the accuser has been thrown down. This is a victory that, again, was won by Jesus, but the Church, especially in her persecution and witness, has a share in the victory of Jesus. And that's because it's the proclamation and witness of Jesus' people that carries his authority to the nations. To put it in terms of Daniel's prophecy, this is the coming of the son of man to receive authority and to bring judgement on the nations. But the defeat of the devil in “heaven” means tribulation for his enemies on earth. This is the warning that John has been giving to the churches, but it also comes with a word of encouragement. Look at 12:13-17. And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea. The imagery here and in the first part of the chapter identifies the woman with Israel. Amongst other things, the twelve stars, the sun, and the moon at her feet is the language of Joseph's vision of his family. And, of course, it's Israel that metaphorically gives birth to Jesus. He is the culmination of her story. But in Revelation, Israel stands judged because of her unfaithfulness. So the woman's identity is narrower than just all of Israel. She represents the faithful of Israel, those who have kept covenant with the Lord and, more specifically now, the Jewish Church. They have seen the Lord's Messiah and they've embraced him in faith. And failing to defeat Jesus, the dragon now goes after this “woman”. John uses the language of the Exodus here. In Exodus 19:4 the Lord says to Israel, “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.” Here, again, he rescues his people on eagles' wings. The serpent pours out water—calling back to the Red Sea—but the Lord causes the earth to swallow it. And as we read in verse 6, like Israel, the Lord feeds the woman in the wilderness. For three and a half years the dragon wars against her and for three and a half years the Lord protects and cares for her. And this, more or less, reflects what happened in those days. The Romans warred against Jerusalem for three and a half years, the city was destroyed, thousands up on thousands were killed, but the Christians of Jerusalem heeded the warnings of Jesus, fled eastward into the wilderness, and were spared. So the dragon has been foiled twice and now the dragon goes off to make war on the rest of the woman's children, on those “who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus”—on the fledgling gentile churches of the empire. This is where John's vision reaches out to encompass those little churches scattered across Asia Minor. Now, Chapter 13. Look at verses 1-4. And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” This beast rises from the sea, an image that tells us we're not talking about Israel anymore. In fact, from this point on John changes the source of most of his Old Testament imagery. Up to this point he's been drawing on images that speaks of judgement on Israel. Now he starts drawing on imagery that speaks of judgement on the pagan nations. This beast with its seven heads and ten horns is related to the dragon. It's part leopard, part bear, and part lion—three of Daniel's beasts representing the pagan empires that oppressed Israel, and that identifies it as yet another pagan empire, in this case Rome. This is made explicit later, in Chapter 17, where the angel tells John that the seven heads are the “seven mountains on which the woman is seated” (17:9), which can't be mistaken for anything but Rome. To this beast the dragon gives his authority to rule the nations. And, yet, remember that even the dragon operates within the sovereignty of God. And as the dragon reaches for divinity, the beast parodies Jesus. Jesus died and rose again. The beast—or one of its heads—is mortally wounded (verse 14 says by a sword, for what that's worth), but the beast survives and the world marvels. The nations worship the beast and, in doing so, unwittingly worship the dragon who stands behind it. They marvel at his power and authority declaring, “Who is like the beast? Who can fight against it?” And, of course, that's just what we see in the historical record with regard to Rome. Rome conquered the known world, its emperors grasped at divinity, calling themselves sons of God, and even when the emperors fell, the empire itself recovered. The mortal wound may be a reference to the assassination of Julius Caesar, the first Emperor, or to the suicide of Nero, which would take place not long after John wrote. Whichever it refers to, many expected the empire to fall into chaos, but both times it recovered and became stronger. Think of those Caesars who demanded the worship of the people, making blasphemous claims at godhood, as we read verses 5-10: And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear: If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. The Emperor Nero was the first emperor to actively persecute the Church, and at Rome his persecution lasted three and a half years. To this evil king the dragon gives authority over every nation—the very authority won by Jesus in his resurrection and ascension. This is the set-up: The dragon and the beast have stolen what rightly belongs to Jesus. They and their worshippers will be judged and thrown down and those who belong to Jesus—those whose names are in the book of life—will be vindicated. John quotes words of warning from Jeremiah 15:5-9, this time aimed at Jerusalem and apostate Israel: Jesus will set everything to rights. And so John says to the churches: “Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.” As Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Even when it doesn't look like it, Brothers and Sisters, Jesus has won. But that's not all. John then sees a second beast. Look at verses 11-18. Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666. This is an unholy parody of the Trinity. The dragon tries to claim the position of the Father, the first beast tries to take the place of the Son, and the second beast tries to take the place of the Holy Spirit. If the first beast represents the emperors of Rome and their false claims of divinity, the second beast represents the imperial cult and its priests. Through a network of temples—temples that were particularly popular in the cities of Asia Minor to which John wrote—the people were forced to acknowledge the divinity of the emperor and to worship him. Sometimes it was an obligatory and patriotic pinch of incense that everyone was required to offer to Caesar. Sometimes it was the expectation to set out a personal shrine to Caesar on the feast day that had his priests processing through the city. But every day it was dealing with the interweaving of this false religion with the social and economic life of the city. The law instructed the Hebrews to bind God's law to their forehead and to their hands. Some did it literally and still do, but the point was that they would remain faithful to the Lord and his covenant by meditating on his law with their minds that it might work out practically in their actions. Earlier we saw that Jesus marks his people similarly in baptism with the Holy Spirit. In contrast the people who worship the beast have centred themselves on him. The “mark of the beast” isn't a literal mark—as some have speculated, like a barcode, a computer chip, or a vaccine. It's simply the parody of the law in Israel and the Spirit in the Church. John prompts those brothers and sisters in First Century Asia Minor to ask: Who is our God? Who do we worship? What will we do when push comes to shove and we're forced to choose? Will we stand firm and give Jesus what we know he is due, or will be bow to pressure and give to the beast what belongs to Jesus? Now, I don't think there was any doubt in the minds of John's hearers what any of this symbolism pointed to, but at the end of Chapter 13 John makes it clear in saying that the beast is a man and that this number is 666. What's that about? Well, ancient peoples didn't have separate numbering systems like we do. They had various ways of using the characters of their alphabets to represent numbers, which means that you could add up the numerical values of the letters in a name and come up with a number. In this case 666. John most likely wrote it this way in case the Romans got hold of his letter. They weren't stupid and would know that he was point to someone's name. His trick is that he wasn't adding up the numbers of a Greek or Latin name, but of that name transliterated into Hebrew. Neron Kaisar in Hebrew letters works out to 666, if you add the values up. It doesn't match up with Nero's name in Greek or Latin, which any imperial censor would have assumed. The early church Fathers recognized this. And we even have one early variant textual tradition that changed the number to 616—the sum of Nero Caesar in Latin—a change made for the benefit of readers who didn't know Hebrew. Now, that said, I don't think John meant that the beast is Nero and Nero alone. The beast represents the emperors of Rome and Nero happened to be the current emperor at the time John wrote. It already would have been obvious that John was writing about Rome, but just in case there was any question, the 666 bit makes it clear. But what do we do with this? Well, first, Friends, it means there's no reason for Christians to be wringing their hands or getting worked up about accidentally receiving the mark of the beast—or, for that matter, accusing other Christians of having received it. We're talking about events that happened almost two thousand years ago, but even then, there was no way any faithful Christians was going to be tricked into receiving the mark—into worshipping Caesar. That said, John's exhortation to stand firm in the face of opposition is still as relevant today as it was then. Because of the witness of the Church, the gospel conquered Rome and brought down Caesar and the dragon's demonic parody of the Trinity. I don't think we realise just how different the world is today because of the power of the gospel. The world has been radically transformed and even today's post-Christian world that is often hostile to us continues to thrive on the capital of a world once transformed by the gospel. But that doesn't mean we aren't surrounded by opposition and hostility. We need to hear Revelation's exhortation to stand firm in faith, Brothers and Sisters, and to remember that we do so not on our own strength, but as we stand on the victory that Jesus has won at the cross, remembering that we are an Easter people, following a resurrected Lord and living in expectant hope of our own resurrection and of the renewal of all things. And we stand firm, not for our own sake, but because even though it is Jesus who has won the ultimate victory, John reminds us here that we have an essential part to play. Jesus doesn't save us from sin and death to then sit out the war behind the line while he fights the battle alone. God has called and created a people for a reason: to carry the good news to the world. And in that, as Jesus' people, we have a part in the victory of the gospel over sin and death. So stand firm. Fight the good fight. Go out in the power of the Spirit and with the word of God to proclaim the good news, for Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again. Let's pray: Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the many and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

As we continue into the season of Advent, let us be reminded that it is only the Consolation of Israel-Jesus, that can bear the weight of our Ultimate expectations. Every year, Christmas tends to rush us by. With all the shopping and events and family commitments and the long lists of to-do list, the frantic pace often leaves us barely catching our breath. That's why Advent is so good for our hearts. If you didn't grow up celebrating Advent, it's a time for us to slow down and reflect and prepare our hearts for the significance of the “coming” of Jesus. That's what Advent means: Coming. This Advent we'll be walking through four vignettes from the Gospel of Luke that surround Jesus' coming in a series are entitled “The Greatness of Christmas.” Throughout the series, we'll explore four vignettes, four opportunities to pause, and let the wonder in as we reflect on “The Greatness of Christmas.” In this sermon, we look at the Angelic Announcement to Mary when she learns that she would be the mother of Jesus. The angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary gives three clues to who this child will be: The Savior of the World: Jesus will the savior who will lay down his life on a cross and rise again to give us eternal life. The King of Israel: Jesus will be the Messiah, the one who would inherit the promises and covenants made with the house of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and who would fulfill the covenant made with Israel's greatest king, David. In other words, Jesus will be the King of Israel. The Son of God: Jesus will be called Holy and will be uniquely set apart from all other children and every other birth, because he will be the Son of God. This means that Jesus is God incarnate, God come to dwell among us. He will be called Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” Takeaways: There are three questions for us to pause and wonder in… What must God be like that He would choose such confinement? What must God be like that He would slip in incognito? What must God be like that He would arrive amidst scandal? Luke 1:26-38

God remains and God restores (and still we wait). The restoration of Jerusalem and its temple after exile is something short of the city’s former glory. A remnant returns from exile and what they are able to effect shows their diminished status on the world stage. This “second temple” in Jerusalem under Roman occupation is the “Israel” Jesus knew; the people were hungrier than ever for a messiah to usher in God’s reign and overturn centuries of suffering. To tell us your thoughts on this sermon, click through to the web posting and leave us a comment. Homily at 21:30 1 Kings 3: "Solomon, ask me for what you want." —God to Solomon. Solomon is known for his wisdom, and for being David's son, and for prefiguring Jesus. He is the son of the great King David, who appointed Solomon as his successor. At this point, Solomon became the 3rd king of Israel—Jesus fulfills the prophesy and became the much "greater Solomon." 2 Samuel 7—The Sandlot (God tells Solomon one of Solomon's descendants will rule for•ev•er) Solomon built the Temple, and God tore it down, and rebuilt it in three days. In the New Testament, Jesus refers to himself as the son of David. Christ fulfills this prophesy by building the New Temple, as the new son of David. Jesus built the true temple, where he said, "You are Peter and on this rock, I will build my Church."—The true Church—the Church of the living God. Jesus is the true "wise man," and anyone who listens to "these words of mine will become like the wise man." If we listen, we become wise. Crux to pray with this week: The image of modesty is the image Solomon uses to describe the beauty in the image of God. "God, give me wisdom. Lord, protect me from the dangers and the sirens of the world, but help me to resist them." Proverbs: Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs for his son: one of the themes of Proverbs is the two types of women—Lady Wisdom "does not wisdom call?" In Chapters 1 & 8, Lady Wisdom says to you, "Come follow me." In Proverbs 2,3, & 9—Lady Folly, or The Seductress. She sits at the door of her house. She takes a seat at the high places of the town. She calls out to them and says, "stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant, but he does not know that the dead are there." Solomon teaches us that in our soul, there are two voices. Which voice will you follow? "The cynic is someone who knows the cost of everything, and the value of nothing." Pray for protection from the cynical voice of the world, and know in the depths of your heart and mind, that when you sell everything for the Lord, God you gain the greatest treasure, ever, forever. "Wisdom is a far greater beauty, with a far greater depth."—Fr. Brian Larkin Let us cry out for insight, as Solomon suggests. Ever since Jesus turned over tables and drove out money-changers from the Temple in Mark 11, the disciples have been wondering when Jesus would finish the job. When would he purify the Temple, remove God’s enemies, and vindicate Israel? Jesus gives an answer in Mark 13 that is full of Old Testament imagery and very practical.

Also, about walking with God ... actually, about hitchhiking with God. I had just finished a period of graduate studies in eschatology in a school in the Eastern part of the United States, and I was praying and asking God where to go. I had nowhere to go, and I actually had no money. I don't think I even had maybe a dollar ... if I had that. So after I had prayed that morning and I asked God, "Show me where to go." I went to the Post Office box on campus to pick up my mail and there was a letter. And when I opened up that letter from my post office box, there was a map in there -- or part of a map -- and it had been cut out in a circle with pinking shears, the kind of scissors used to cut fabric. And that map was a state or county area of Alabama in the United States and the map was about 10 inches wide. And in that map a line -- a black line had been drawn -- and then an "X" and a red circle looking like a crayon, a red crayon, had circled that "X" ... and I knew exactly where that place was; and I said, "God, I asked you to show me where you wanted me to go. This is such a sign I can't deny it. The only problem is I don't have any money." Well, within about an hour, nobody knowing this, I received money from two different sources in cash. If I remember correctly, that money came from fellow students at the school. So it was enough money to ride the bus halfway from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the location marked “X” on the map, in the State of Alabama. I forget how I traveled the other half of the way. I had been to that area one time before, and held a revival meeting there. And during that revival a man had shot his wife four times on a country road, kicked her out of the truck they were riding in, and left her in a ditch beside the road. I was told about it, and immediately after the evening service, I went to the hospital to see if I could get in to visit and pray for the lady who I heard had been shot by her husband. There was no way I could get into the hospital. Crowds of people were out in front and nobody was allowed in. I assume maybe a doctor could have gotten in. But I remembered how Jesus just walked through a crowd one time. So I just started to walk – carrying my Bible – walked right in there, walked right in the hospital, walked right into the intensive care ward where the lady was, without directions … and without anyone guiding me. I didn't even know what the lady's name was, but I got to pray for her. Well, during these meetings, every afternoon we hooked up a large loudspeaker and the horn on that loudspeaker must have been 18 inches wide – a foot and a half wide – about a half a meter wide in diameter. And so for hours in the afternoon I would preach something, and then we would play a song and we blasted the sound at a super high volume. We were about a half a block from the city courthouse and the jail, and the power of God invaded that community. It was a town called Double Springs, Alabama. Well, that next day after I had prayed for the lady in the hospital, I went to the jail to visit her husband who had shot her. God had spared her life, after being shot shot four times. And in the jail, I was allowed to visit the man who had shot his wife, and then kicked her out of the truck, leaving her to die in the ditch. I never heard somebody yell so loudly in my life. The man cried out begging God to forgive him. He repented and gave his life to Messiah Jesus. What I did NOT tell you was that when I had been in that city and state before, I did NOT finish the work that the LORD wanted me to finish. One little boy had been saved and during this second visit I baptized him in the Sipsey River. And if I remember correctly, that little boy was the son of the lady who had been shot. And I went to their home, the lady, the husband, and the little boy, were all serving God. Praise God's Holy Name. Baruch haShem. Well, when I left that area, I had no money and I was hitchhiking on my way up to Pennsylvania from Double Springs, Alabama. It was getting rather cool in the evening and I only had a jacket with a shirt on underneath that jacket. The last person who gave me a ride in that late afternoon let me out on a little two lane highway. And I said, "God, I don't even know where I'm at, and there's nobody here to even pick me up to take me where I need to go.” I didn't know … I was probably 600 miles -- or 12 hours -- from where I needed to be; and I start complaining to God ... and then all of a sudden I realized, "Well, praise God ... God knows how to take care of me. I will just trust Him like I have been doing!" I thought, "God has taken care of me in the past. He can do it again." And when I started praising God, I just felt impressed to turn around. I was beside a hill that went down from the highway and I looked down that hill -- and even though it was bright green grass as it is in Alabama, lots of green grass -- I saw another clump of green stuff. And I went down the hill to look ... and surely enough there was a handful of money. I said, "Praise God, Heavenly Father, you let me out in the perfect spot.” It was enough money to buy some food and rent a motel. God is so good. That's what I'm talking to you about. Walking with God ... hitchhiking with God. I don't care if you're flying with God; whatever you're doing, God will show you and lead you and guide you IF you listen to Him ... IF you obey Him! So, my friend, it doesn't matter WHERE YOU'RE AT or WHAT SITUATION YOU'RE IN, God will take care of YOU. He loves you. God isn't some big ogre in heaven waiting to hit you with a big stick; and neither is he some old gray-haired man sitting in a rocking chair. God is eternally young and he's with it. You can never con God. In the Bible. He tells us, "I will lead you and guide you with my eye upon you, just like a horse with a bridle in his mouth, I will guide you." And God tells us that he will even guide us to our old age when our hair is gray and white. Your Father in Heaven even knows when a sparrow drops to the ground dead. He knows every detail about your life. He made you. He made this whole universe ... so you trust Him today. Pray, and ask God to show you what he wants you to do … and then obey Him. And if you don't have the facilities or the means or the logistics to carry out what God is telling you to do, then ask God to give you what you need to carry out his plans. But move ahead. Take the first step, and "GO." And when you go in faith, the MIRACLES will begin to happen. I trust this teaching will help you to know how to walk, to hitchhike, to ride, to fly, to transport in space -- whatever you do, whatever your thing is -- HOW to go with God. He loves you! And my friend, let God talk through you. Tell your friends ... even your enemies ... about the wonderful Messiah of Israel: Jesus the Anointed One -- the Son of God who died in YOUR place, to pay for all of your sins! As we begin Acts, we take a small step back from where we left off yesterday. Luke finished with the account of Jesus’ ascension, yet here in Acts (the sequel to Luke) we read about it once more! This isn’t because the ascension happened twice, but because Luke uses it as the connecting ‘hinge’ between volumes one (i.e., Luke) and two (i.e., Acts). As Acts tells the story of the first followers of Jesus taking the Gospel to the world, we’re reminded here that this is not only in light of Jesus’ death and resurrection, but because he has ascended and is coming back again. But not only that. They are also compelled to take the Gospel to the world because the risen Jesus has commissioned them for this task and promised that they will be equipped to do it. This is exciting news for the disciples, and so they ask when will the kingdom be restored to Israel? Jesus reminds them that the time or date isn’t really their business, and instead they should concern themselves with simply being witnesses! Witnesses of what? That Jesus is the crucified and risen Lord. Whilst the disciples had not yet received the gift of the Holy Spirit, that doesn’t mean that there are two ‘categories’ of Christians - those with, and those without - today. Every Christian today can be confident that if they have accepted Jesus as your Lord, that they have also received the gift of the Spirit. How do we know that? Because that is exactly what we’re promised after Pentecost. Pentecost (the day which the disciples were awaiting) was the first coming of the Holy Spirit, but after that, as the repentance of sins was preached, so too was the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 2:38). That means, that if you have turned to Jesus, then you have already received the gift that Jesus promised! What is left is for us to trust in the power of that gift more. ALQuestionsThe disciples weren’t yet filled with the Holy Spirit. Since Pentecost, how can we be confident that every single Christian has received the Holy Spirit? What does your life witness to? How might it witness Jesus more?PrayerDear Father, thank you that you have given us the gift of your Spirit in order that we might know you and be equipped for your mission. Please help us to not be passive, but revel in the great privilege to take your news to the world. Amen.
Consequence 01 Jesus Goes! Jesus has been raised from the dead! What happened next! In this brief series called Consequences, we shall look together at 7 consequences of Jesus’ death and resurrection and some of the theological implications. ~ Jesus was crucified, dead and buried. Frequently Jesus taught that he would rise from the dead. He was mocked for it when on the cross. The disciples had seemingly forgotten this and were hiding in fear at any retribution by the Jewish religious authorities. At his tomb, there were both Temple and Roman Guards to ensure nobody could steal the body of Jesus. ~ Acts 1:1-12 In my first book, Theophilus, I wrote about what Jesus began to do and teach. This included everything from the beginning of his life until the day he was taken to heaven. Before he was taken to heaven, he gave instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles, whom he had chosen. After his death Jesus showed the apostles a lot of convincing evidence that he was alive. For days he appeared to them and talked with them about the kingdom of God. Once, while he was meeting with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for what the Father had promised. Jesus said to them, “I’ve told you what the Father promises: John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when the apostles came together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you’re going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus told them, “You don’t need to know about times or periods that the Father has determined by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you. Then you will be my witnesses to testify about me in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he had said this, he was taken to heaven. A cloud hid him so that they could no longer see him. They were staring into the sky as he departed. Suddenly, two men in white clothes stood near them. They asked, “Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking at the sky? Jesus, who was taken from you to heaven, will come back in the same way that you saw him go to heaven.” Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called the Mount of Olives. It is near Jerusalem, about half a mile away. ~ Jesus’ resurrection is the catalyst for the mission of the church, beginning with the disciples and throughout history. Indeed, the growth and spread of the church, is a proof of the historical fact of Jesus’ physical resurrection or rising from the dead. Having been raised from the dead, Jesus’ mission to earth is coming to an end and shortly He will be returning to the right hand of the Father. Just as He had said to his disciples a few times before He went to the cross. Before He does leave though, He has some final instructions for His disciples. ~ In the Gospel of Mark 16:14-19, the Gospel of Luke 24:50-51 and in our reading from the book of Acts 1:1-12, we read about Jesus physically ascending into the heavens. Jesus has returned to the right hand of the Father, as He said he would do before His death on the cross. During their last discussion with Jesus, the disciples were still expecting him to lead a revolution against the Romans (Acts 1:6). Despite all Jesus had said to them in the previous 3 years, they still did not understand that Jesus had come to lead a spiritual kingdom and not a political kingdom. ~ Now it would be easy to think that Jesus has abandoned them, but no! Jesus tells them to go back to Jerusalem, wait for the Holy Spirit and then go tell others the Good News about Him! He had told them previously that he was going away and that it was better for them if He did, because the Holy Spirit would be sent to be with them, to live in them and empower them for the work they had to do! And even after Jesus had vanished into the clouds, the disciples still gathered around looking into the sky for Him to return! So two angels came and said “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.” (Acts 1:11) From there the disciples returned to Jerusalem and waited. They didn’t have to wait long, 10 days, until the Holy Spirit came, filled them and started living within them. And that is what we will look at tomorrow in the next of this series Consequences. ~ Right Mouse click or tap here to save/listen this as an audio mp3 file You can now purchase our Partakers books! Should we demur from God-given revelation when Scripture identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel? Jesus is the true Israel of God.
On the way back to Jerusalem after the triumphal Entry, Jesus encounters a fig tree that has no fruit on it, and he promptly curses it. Therefore, Jesus must hate fig trees. No wait, Jesus is teaching you how to curse fig trees, yeah that's it. No, wait, Jesus is teaching you about having faith and speaking to fig trees and mountains so you can overcome these obstacles. There has been so much bad teaching on this one incident that whole versions of Christianity have grown up around the strange interpretations of this incident. But what if, just what if... Jesus was talking about cursing Israel? What if Jesus had gone to the tree that is Israel, found no fruit on it, and per the covenant made with Israel Jesus calls down the condemnation upon the nation for neglecting the message they were to spread? APOSTLE TALK - Future News Now!WWW.REALMIRACLES.COMwith Prince Handley THE VISION AND THE MIRACULOUSCREATING WITH VISION & DECISION: THE EYE OF YOUR MIND Previously we talked about right thoughts plus diligence will cause you to profit.Today, I want to continue with another powerful concept: THE VISION AND THE MIRACULOUS. A more specific title would be: Creating with vision and decision through the eye of your mind mixed with faith. To SEE with the eye of the mind … that is, to envision … can encompass the following: imagination, thinking, and decision making. To cut out with the eye of your mind is to SEE IT, or to THINK IT upon the tablet of your heart or human spirit. This will enable you to experience MIRACLES ... real miracles ... for the glory of God!In Job 22:28 we read, You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto you... In the original Hebrew language the word decree is a primitive root form of the word gazar, which means to cut out exclusively, or to decide. In its primitive form it is used also as a quarrying term ... as in cutting out stone from a rock quarry. It means more than to say or speak. It conveys the meaning of cutting something out in the eye of your mind; that is, to envision ... to make a vision ... to decide upon it, and confess it ... and then it will be established unto you! To decree is the progenitor of heart belief and mouth confession. It is BOTH the nucleus and all-encompassing embryo of initiating great moves of the Holy Spirit on Planet Earth. This is why we need to SPEND TIME MEDITATING THE WORD OF GOD. We are NOT talking about New Age type meditation, which can actually be used, and even energized, by demonic forces. We are talking about MEDITATING the Word of God so we KNOW HOW to work in alignment with our Father in Heaven, Jehovah. When we meditate the Word of God we learn His principles; we also learn WHAT He wants (what His will is for the nations and for us). We also learn how to please Him by living holy and doing His will: reaching people and nations for Christ. Then we can DECREE a thing because we have decided upon it … we have cut it out in our mind's eye. We therefore BELIEVE it in our heart: the Holy Spirit has impressed the Will of the Father upon our mind and deposited it in our human spirit. We have seen the Will of God in our mind's eye and have decided to implement it. We decree it by seeing, believing, and speaking. We ACT on our decision after we have HEARD from God … and it comes to pass. We PLAN in the Spirit; we IMPLEMENT in the Spirit. We BELIEVE and KNOW that it will come to pass and therefore we RECEIVE it for the glory of the Father. Faith is wonderful … but it is even better when you have a PLAN to go along with your faith. If YOUR PLAN fits into THE PLANS OF GOD, you will have the faith of God … and the faith of God ALWAYS WORKS! In the next sesion we will discuss how to turn the tide … HOW to enter into the realm of the MIRACULOUS: where historical, earth-shaking, victories are won BY ... and FOR ... the glory of God!
