— Dr. Frank W. Gaskill is the co-author of Max Gamer. He is an awesome Aspie who uses his special abilities to become a superhero. The authors don't consider Asperger's a disorder. Instead, they see it as a potential gift that can include some amazing skills. While some define it by deficits, this book focuses on strengths that give these individuals the resilience and confidence they need to rise to their potential. Valeria interviews Dr. Frank W. Gaskill — He is an American psychologist and author who specializes in Asperger syndrome, effective parenting, and how technology and children can interface safely and successfully. Gaskill co-founded the largest private psychology practice in the country. Gaskill is the co-author of a graphic novel about Asperger's. In addition to having a comic based on Asperger's, he is also the host of an online video series dedicated to promoting the idea that Asperger's is a more highly evolved brain. Prior to founding Southeast Psych, he worked at The Devereux Foundation in Devon, Pennsylvania, serving as their Primary Therapist and Senior Research Psychologist for the Institute for Clinical Training and Research (ICTR). When I was just a kid, my brother and I would play chess. He would always have my king in check within a short time. I was always puzzled by the fact that he could outwit me so easily, by seemingly knowing what I was thinking. In this episode, the topic is thinking. How those of us who live with AS/ASD think and how we all, Aspies and neurotypicals alike, are busy out-thinking the other. Be ready for a quick lesson in communication and social skills.Support the showThanks for Listening! We live in a Mr. Fix-It world. When we see anything out of place in our lives, we immediately start looking for the quick fix, the cure or the harmless and costless solution. In doing so, we often look too hastily for a cause and end up with a stigma instead of honest information. We'll take a good look at why we think the way we do when it comes to other people and especially how we consider others who are different then ourselves. For those of us who are Aspies (or on the spectrum) and for the neurotypical, differences are keeping us apart instead of bringing us together. It is so important that we find a common place of understanding for those with AS/ASD who are trying to live in the world around you, but for the NT as well, trying to make sense of those who live a different life.Support the showThanks for Listening! I never thought I would get to speak to someone in the legendary Californian city of Fresno. I always though it was short for a bigger title too, but turns out to be Spanish for Ash tree. Eve Reliand who claimed the name Autistic Bad Ass Activist before anyone else, kindly spoke to me for my podcast.Eve is best introduced as an autistic activist, artist, writer and parent. she is the founder of InternationalBadassActivists (one word for all you autistic pendants out there), and a co-founder of the Autistic Co operative. Eve started writing for self advocacy in 2005 and launched her first campaign around autism in 2008. Eve's goals are to make a better future for all autistic s born today, amplify divergent voices and document just what has been going on in the world of autism but from our perspective rather than the neurotypical curing parent one that seems to want absolute domination over every narrative and agenda known. Her wonderful films on social media must be seen to be believed. History will be very glad that Eve has gone to the effort that she has. Addiction specialist and best-selling author Maia Szalavitz joins me to talk about her new book, Undoing Drugs: The Untold Story of Harm Reduction and the Future of Addiction.Maia has been researching, writing about, and working within the harm reduction community for more than twenty years, and her latest book is just one of many required reads for anyone who is beginning to realize they have been lied to about drugs and those who use them. Maia and I discuss different frameworks of recovery, definitions of harm reduction, and ways of embracing our identities (as addicted people, Aspies, etc.) without letting them weigh us down. We also talk about Nirvana & Kurt Cobain, drug regulation as a fix to the overdose crisis, ways of undoing stigma, and we preview the best parts of her new book.

According to a study done by Toronto Redpath Centre, as few as 9% of those with ASD ever get married. Fewer than 32% ever have a love relationship with a partner. The possibility of romance is widely considered out of reach by those who have Asperger's Syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Romantic relationships are laced with so many nuances of trust, communication and deeper feelings of the heart that Aspies have a really hard time. COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK? GuerillaAspies@Outlook.comEmma Dalmayne has assisted the British Police to find, question and even arrest parents and people who put their childrens live in danger through unregulated treatments that are supposed to 'cure' them of being autistic. She has often done this by infiltrating social groups dedicated to such aims, finding out who people are and then reporting them. As seen on the BBC, Channel 4, in the Guardian, Times and Daily Mail newspapers. The unique and I think history making autistic advocate Emma Dalmayne finally gets time to talk to me on the phone. That took some doing.Emma and I have been friends for many years and I have not been podcasting for a while, really because I was after speaking to her. I think her work around exposing the practices of injecting CHL Chlorine Dioxide into the anuses of small children, which killed a UK child, is life saving. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/jul/10/usa.edpilkington and https://www.vice.com/en/article/kwxq3w/parents-are-giving-their-children-bleach-enemas-to-cure-them-of-autism-311Quoting the New York Times:...the “bleach cures” movement. The Genesis II Church and Kerri Rivera, among others, have been selling products like chlorine dioxide, marketed as “Miracle Mineral Solution,” or M.M.S., stating that the substances will cure autism, acne, cancer, diabetes, Covid-19 and so much more. This is a crucial red flag for pseudoscience: When a product claims it can cure anything, it's a fake.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/26/opinion/coronavirus-bleach-trump-autism.htmlWith six children, several of them at home to with her, Emma has started her own organisation to support both parents and autistic children with regular South London playgroups and meet ups. She has published two books and has spoken on radio and television. She has been consulted by Government in the UK Parliament and only this year was thanked during a meeting in the Palace of Westminster, over the regulation of dangerous practices aimed at 'treating' autistic children. In the belief that this would stop them being what they are. Emma as acted undercover for many years, infiltrating huge online social groups of parents who are secretively putting their own children health and lives at risk. All under the delusion that it will stop them being what they describe as autistic. Emma has taken a lot of personal abuse from such people and has received more threats than I would care to mention on here. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/jul/13/fake-cures-autism-prove-deadlyhttps://autisticinclusivemeets.org/about-us/emma-dalmayne/I am proud to call Emma my friend and I hope to carry on supporting her work in the future. Even if it means we have to get ourselves a bit roughed up facing others. Ah well, that's being old Liverpudlian or Scouser for you. We tend to find ourselves at the sharp end... ;)COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK? GuerillaAspies@Outlook.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/guerilla-aspies-autism-aspergers-syndrome-neurodiversity. You've seen the puzzle pieces, the lighting it up blue, the walks...but autism is so much more than these well-intentioned, but sometimes harmful awareness campaigns. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful autism is in the common lexicon now, but I am very passionate about telling the rest of the story. Or rather, letting autistic people tell the rest of their story. In this episode, I interview Heidi and Victoria, two Australian women who are also autistic. Their new podcast, Aspies Etc., caught my attention, and I wanted to pick their neurodiverse minds on everything from how to better raise my autistic daughter and what it's like to launch into the podcast world. I've been writing about my daughter and autism for years. I haven't always done it right. But I've done it. And I have no regrets. We need this connection of community, and I'm grateful I get to parent a neurodiverse child. And maybe, just maybe, I've lived inside a neurodiverse mind my entire life. COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK? GuerillaAspies@Outlook.comAugust 2020 I found myself in a hot debate whilst using the @StealthAspies Twitter account with some advocates in the USA who could never tolerate the idea that disability is relative to autistic people. For them the term autism was absolutely synonymous with disability and disorder.I made the acquantanceship of Jeff Fullington, a Seattle based autism advocate and asked him to podcast with me. Jeff is an interesting and passionate man who wants to create communities, both in person and virtually and seeks to bring people together and promote a positive NeuroDivergent identity the world over.Jeff is from the Cajun culture and community and his current project is a Discord - Server platform called The Red Door. He is also working on a website, blog and podcasting platform that other autistic people will be able to use to share their work. The discord link is https://discord.gg/AmTubn9 and the info site for it is https://sites.google.com/view/the-red-doorWARNING: We end up spending a lot of time talking about our shared love of late 70's/early 80's music. As a first generation Liverpool Punk Rocker, I consider this a right and proper use of my podcast time. Thereafter at the end Jeff details his work so it's worth getting to the very end to hear that. Thank you Jeff. :)COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK? GuerillaAspies@Outlook.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/guerilla-aspies-autism-aspergers-syndrome-neurodiversity. Hosted on Acast. A very good friend of mine speaking all the way from Tel Aviv Israel, Chen 'Globetrotter' Gershuni has had a huge, invisible influence on the planets autistic advocacy through his tireless and selfless translation work as much as becoming a major hub of positive self advocacy. Chen is renown the world over online and is a regular on the UK's Autscape event. He is also a musician and player of the stick. Look 'em up.He's a brilliant man and a lot quieter and smarter than me. Which of course is saying a great deal, etcetera. I caught him in his living room.During the podcast you will hear a reference to a man called Jonathan Mitchell being interviewed on a YouTube channel that I name as Autism One. In fact I got the name wrong. It was the Autism Live Channel. This interview is worth seeing on account of the sheer paradox that Mitchell presents in platforming himself as an autistic person who stands against anyone being positive about their autistic natures. When he himself clearly presents as someone who can work around the limits of his autistic nature, as he sees it limiting him. Now, what he refuses to acknowledge is that others can have equally valid but different opinions. The eerie inability to stop seeing his opinion as the ONLY one that should be seen and believed in life. The total inability to concede and see anything in the arguments and statements of others.Mitchell is a full time troll who relentlessly criticises anyone on mainly Twitter that he disagrees with. He has had substantial mainstream media coverage and cannot understand that he represents a schism in the greater Neurodiversity Movement that he both rejects and considers himself not to be part of. I see the term Neurodiversity Movement as a metaphor. Not a card carrying organisation. Notice also, the way that he uses the term Neurodiversity Movement as he wants it to be seen.Mitchell is actually part of a visible, online group of what are clearly his close personal friends. A phenomena he keeps saying that he cannot have or enjoy.https://youtu.be/X9zD_RK6-swWhat is weird is that Mitchell states how much he has been attacked and insulted, without any reference to what he's been doing to people. Even when they did not know. He's rather fond of relentlessly criticising people who have blocked him and have no idea he's doing it.Poor Jonathan is a fine example of how in the world of social media, people do not seem to be able to understand that their ideas and statements can be seen in completely different ways to how they think they should be.The Autism Live channel is a very dubious thing. The presenter was found by me in one episode, staring in awe at Andrew Wakefield and Del Bigtree, his Dr Goebells, doing their usual material on how the vaccines their own bodies were doubtless full of (certainly Wakefields if not Bigtree. His zealous preacher parents may not have had him protected) were potentially dangerous and even lethal. This film is no longer findable. It appears to be run by the C.A.R.D or Centre of Autism and Related Disorders, the boss of which appeared in the Andrew Wakefield paranoid conspiracy theory medical science fiction film Vaxxed 1. For the tenth podcast I would like to introduce to you all over the planet Earth, the Autistic Trans Parent and Artist Alexandra Forshaw. We discuss trying to cope with the best university in Britain, finding out just how much don't fit and how much the NeuroDivergent community has given Alexandria a community and a positive identity. Hell, a real one more like.Do we all spend our lives compromising and following social protocols that demand we become to varying degrees, someone and something we are not? Then to go on to live as such for the rest of our lives. Sometimes blissfully unaware of how much we compromise ourselves. I think so. But not everyone is lucky enough to uncover and come to live in alignment with their own reality in all its forms. (This is a rather Buddhist way of putting it).Its now August 2020 and I an not at the Edinburgh Festival doing my long running show, which is a great shame. However a link to the Stealth Aspies performance at the Marlborough Theatre in Brighton 2019 is available to be seen as part of the online Edinburgh Free Fringe. It was my honour to interview Billie Jo Gibson, who stepped up and took on the responsibility for the Liverpool Autism Pride event a few years ago. She is also the webmanager for Neurodivergent Labour. We all come from somewhere. A place that makes us. I come from the city of Liverpool. As we 'Scousers' say, a boss interview with Billie la.Life can be a huge journey. Billie takes us on her's from a young diagnosis to her creative life and unflinching political stanch. One day people will take for granted the effort and sacrifices that activists like Billie Jo have had to go through. For now, please enjoy this little bit of history. I sometimes think the people who started it all and took on the world in their own small way, were never rewarded by the future's view of just how significant their actions were. Billie, take courage and pride that when I was a child in the 1970's no one knew anything about being autistic like they do now. But in the future your work will go on and mean so much to people like us. Please enjoy.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/guerilla-aspies-autism-aspergers-syndrome-neurodiversity. COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK? GuerillaAspies@Outlook.comMother of three, Scientist, award winning comedian, actor and producer. Dr Ria Lina is one unique autistic person. Funny too.Of German and Phillipino ancestry, growing up in the UK, the USA and the Netherlands.Ria has a BSc in Experimental Pathology, an MSc in Forensic Science, and a PhD in Viral Bioinformatics. She worked as an IT Forensic Investigator for the Serious Fraud Office too, so don't try anything funny online with her.Ria is a winner of the EMMA (Ethnic Multicultural Media Academy) award, She is known for her television appearances in The World Stands Up, Mega Mela Malai Comedy and Sweet n Sour on BBC3. She has been an Edinburgh Festival regular which is how come we could discuss the Free Fringe and the people we mention. Tricity is a friend of ours and a brilliant performer in her own right, who kind of brought us together (It was her Bluestockings Cabaret we were both doing things upon. Oooer..)SUBSCRIBE TO RIA'S PODCAST - RIA LINA'S BEHIND ON ITUNES AND EVERYWHERE.I see Ria as yet another example of how autistic people, once diagnosed and immersed into the greater Autistic media and metaphorical Neurodiversity Movement, become clearly defined in their opinions and politics about everything NeuroDivergent. It seems to be an organic thing.COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK? GuerillaAspies@outlook.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/guerilla-aspies-autism-aspergers-syndrome-neurodiversity. Any feedback or suggestions? HoxtonPaul@Outlook.com or GuerillaAspies@gmail.comCatriona founded SWAN: Scottish Women's Autism Network, in 2012, after completing her PhD research, which focussed on experiences of anxiety for Asperger girls. SWAN has grown to run online peer-support forums, regular ‘meet-up' groups across Scotland, includ-ing for ‘Young Swans' aged 15-17 and Learning Event conferences. SWAN offers training and professional support across sectors. Scottish Autism commissioned Catriona to develop their Right Click online resource for autistic women and girls, funded by Scottish Government in 2015. Developing the re-source involved primary research into the lived experiences of autistic women, girls and their families and many interviews with professional experts in the field such as Dr Judith Gould, Tony Attwood, Richard Mills, Sarah Hendrickx, Carly Jones MBE and many other autistic women and girls. Scottish Government funded Catriona's initiative - to evidence the impact of peer mentoring - through a SWAN/Scottish Autism partnership delivered 2018-2019. Modelled as a co-production and pilot study, the Under Our Wing peer-mentor-ing project was designed and led by autistic women, with administrative support provided by Scottish Autism. Catriona was an ‘expert' and advisor to the highly regarded 3 year UK-wide National Aut-ism Project. She was advisor to the 2 year-long Independent Review of the Mental Health Act, Scotland, recently completed in Dec 2019. On behalf of SWAN she is currently acting as Regional Delivery Partner to the Scottish Government ‘Improving Understanding of Aut-ism' campaign. She has delivered training, presentations, conference papers and workshops over many years and to a wide range of contexts, professional organisations, charities, parents groups and Local Authority staff. With a tendency to sign up for academic or training courses whenever a small gap ap-pears in her calendar, Catriona has, over the years, collected a range of degrees and oth-er qualifications, including: BA (Hons) Fine Art, PGCert Community Work, PGDip Western Herbal Medicine, PG Dip Gender Studies, MSc In Diagnostic Issues in Autism, PhD. Like many autistic people, she's also had an eclectic mix of jobs, from 2 years as full-time paid student union officer and politician, to working for 9 years within film and TV art depart-ments, to being a health clinician, to teaching, university lecturing and student mentoring.Catriona contributed to the collection of essays, “Spectrum Women” published by JKP in 2018 which was listed by the Independent as their 2019 #1 Best Buy book on autism. Catriona was included in the Queen's New Year's Honours list, 2020, as an OBE.Opinons? THE SECOND GUERILLA ASPIES PODCASTContents. 0:52 Introduction to Dinah by PW, and a quick purr by Pushkin the Wondercat. 2:50 I explain that I will be splicing the start of our interview at the very end, and commencing the podcast with a more ‘meaty' bit from when the pace had picked up. 3:00 Dinah explains how she started. Giving talks with Mike Lesser in the 1990's and meeting Wenn Lawson. 5:17 Discovering Broom Hill school and a useful book by Rita Jordan and Stuart Powell. Getting in touch with them. 6:20 Durham Conferences and Paul Shattock. How his association with Andrew Wakefield ruined everything. 6:32 Witnessing Andrew Wakefield's first public talk about measles in 1998. This isn't Science! 7:56 PW discuss Wakefield as a waste of time but a fascination for me, and Dinah agrees. 8:38 Negativity around positivity around being autistic. 8:20 Not being very visible and being fairly equitable are skills I developed to survive. 9:50 I never talked about left/right male brain. 10:18 The rise of female representation in autism. She shifting to a less gendered set. 11:10 The AQ questions format…all biased. 11:35 Professor Declan Murphy and his ‘normal' brains…Dinah rails against such projections. 12:12 Uta Frith/Franke Happe and following the leaders in science. No! 13:00 Michelle Dawson and the research into emotion in autistics. The use of fake computer - generated images. Nothing to do with genuinely connecting with people's emotions. 13:45 It is clearly not the case that there is a standard limited set of responses you can call on. 14:00 Academic representations of autism are still ‘the wild west'. 14:50 The Universities will pay you to do these tests. What it is like doing them. 15:30 Learning and training the mind. If I'm no good at something I'd rather not do it at all. Why should autistics have to do things against our natures? 16:15 Habituation is a thing. Conquering the supermarket meltdowns… 17:00 We are good at training our minds. 17:35 The children were being monitored but the information was going straight to the teacher and not the children. When a classroom did not use the bio feedback they should have. 18:45 When teachers don't relate to the children as people, but instead only see the parents. 19:04 How to cope with intense feelings. 19:40 Child cruelty as helping? Judge Rotenberg and extreme ABA. 20:15 The future of ABA. Will it mutate and soften? 21:05 On films on YouTube by young autistic people. 21:35 How it can be used as ‘ammunition' by the people who say we are not really representative of those who cannot communicate. 22:00 Parents should partly own the process, but not all of it. How families can be and the great power struggles in our world. 22:44 An autistic person, a mother and a grandmother. 22:50 I did not have children who cannot speak, although I do know one person who is non - verbal that I have been close to for over 20 years. 23:15 The Mason family. Three autistic children. One non - verbal and the others got degrees etc. 23:55 Learning disabled issues are the ones that the National Autistic Taskforce has come into existence to engage with and make a difference. 25:01 Telling the outside world what is going on inside. That to me is really important. That and showing ‘capacity'. 25:30 Allowing autistics to access fun content online. 25:50 Parents of autistic children (who don't like them being autistic) and the whole Autism Speaks phenomenon. 26.50 PW explains how he micro melts down all the time and contains it. 27:48 We all frighten people sometimes… 28:10 Women reacting against the whole women must avoid being a threat world…I think all of that is a bit overcomplicated. 29:02 The autism world as being in the grip of the researchers/parents mafia's. 30:00 Every child should have an education that explains the power structres around them. 30:20 How LGBTI/Feminism/political views exploded the simplicity of the world we grew up in. 31:20 The pharmaceutical industry and it's desire to have more of a handle on the world of autism. 31:45 The rise of the power of medical doctors. 32:18 Medicating and mucking around with genes….eugenic attitudes and live testing on children. 33:14 Changing autistic behaviours equals changing how people's brains are… 34:50 When autistics do not qualify to be disordered. When you cannot make absolute statements about disability or ability, whilst needing to in order to get support and understanding. 35:20 When you have to portray yourself as inadequate in order to have any chance of getting the support you need from the sources that might be available. 36:30 Neither of us can do pity porn. 37:20 The no win scenario is just that. Diagnosis as being damned. 37:47 The Bridge and The Tunnel tv shows are discussed. 38:20 How things are and where you would like them to go, Dinah? 38:50 There is a possibility we could attract the right attention and get the right support. 39:50 Dinah discusses her history with Autscape and the people involved. 41:30 Martijn Dekker and Jim Sinclair. 42:12 Being asked to speak. Launch of 1996 Autism Computing Webisite and the Upana website – Autistic People Against Neuroleptic Abuse. 42:50 David Andrews, Heta Pukki, Cassie Ann Sibley, Amanda Baggs. The first Guerilla Aspies book and show podcast. By Paul Wady. FEEL FREE TO JUMP AROUND ANY PART YOU DESIRE. Here is a list of subjects and their location along the timeline.1:54 Demonstration recording of the 12 of us outside the Tabernacle venue.21:35 Introduction to Emma Dalmayne and AIM.21:59 Explanation of my signs.22:42 Explanation of my Parent Snuff Porn sign.24:24 I am open to persuasion but so far, nothing...24:43 Background of Vaxxed films, 1 and 2.26:30 Tommey speaks! Excerpts from an interview film Polly Tommey recorded with two mothers inside the venue as we protested.27:29 Attack on Emma Dalmayne and Fional O'Leary by Polly Tommey. 'Pharma Trolls'.28:10 Ambiguity around just how long Tommey has been active was a problem here. I assumed 1998 but the magazine may have been 1999.28:46 Polly Tommey - I CANNOT RECOMMEND ONE GOOD (medical) DOCTOR IN THE UK.29:32 When did Tommey start following Wakefield? I am not sure here. Was the 8000 word signature real?31:04 Polly Tommey - SWINE FLU VACCINE DOCTORS SHOULD BE IN JAIL.31:35 Never another vaccination again for the rest of my life...31:56 A reference to one Suzanne Humphreys, a discredited and controversial figure who backs up Tommey. They were both banned from entering Australia something like two years ago.32:00 Polly Tommey - NOT ONE TEAR SHED. An attempt to initiate a Breaking Technique with the audiences?32:18 Breaking Techniques and Love Bombing.33:15 A discussion about Polly Tommey.34:00 Excerpt of a YouTube film soundtrack from the summer of 2016 in which Polly Tommey says she would not judge parents who murder their autistic children in cold blood.34:43 The Autism File magazine is dedicated to only portraying the umbrella term autism as meaning brain damage alone. Yet it has cited different causes that manifest identically. Could it work like that medically?36:13 The conclusion of the Polly Tommey section. Have you ever met an Anti Vaxxer who concedes?37:02 Just like in Louis Theroux MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE 2015, two women filmed us working as an organised and apparently trained film crew unit. They lied to us they were not anything to do with the Vaxxed people, but later we discovered one of them had a lanyard around her neck she was hiding. Also she actually said yet before running scared through the venue doorway. We have no idea what they will do with the film made, nor gave permission for the Vaxxed people to film us. Was this intimidation?38:04 A description of the filming the Scientologists did in the Louis Theroux film.39:06 Feedback on HOXTONPAUL@HOTMAIL.CO.UK please.39:23 A message for the Vaxxed film people - why are you going around impersonating the Scientologists?39(ish) Supposing its all true....why it is not. I explain what I think would have happened by now if there had ever been any basis in reality for the film.41:18 QUACK CORNER. A regular feature on treatments, interventions, cures and generally turning us NEUROTYPICAL.44:07 An introduction to Paul Wady's shows, which neglects to mention what else I get up to like the Guerilla Aspies book, t shirts, badges and my worst seller - fridge magnets. More personal details to come.45:43 PARENTS VERSES AUTISTIC ADVOCATES. An attempt to settle things via perspective. Different communities on the metaphorical spectrum. Different opinions. Same Neurodiversity Movement... (HINT = It's a metaphor not a real thing).53:53 The End. It’s irreverent and funny and it breaks down commonly held misconceptions about autism.

Beth Brust, the mother of an Asperger's child, coauthored Quirky, Yes—Hopeless, No: Practical Tips to Help Your Child with Asperger's Syndrome Be More Socially Accepted. While Brust offers a parent's perspective, Dr. Cynthia La Brie Norall provides an expert's point of view. Together, they synthesize years of training Asperger's kids at their after-school "Friends Club." Fashioned after Dr. Spock's guidebook for parents, the book serves as a sort of bible for parents and educators dealing with children on the autism spectrum. Just three takeaways: "Aspies" can, in fact, learn people skills and become more socially aware. But this growth requires practice. Breaking down skills into small steps sets them up for success. Looking people in the eye can be very distracting and stressful for Asperger's kids, causing others to misinterpret their behavior as rude or disinterested. Bullying is prevalent among children with Asperger's, so learning strategies for stopping it is essential. (Note: Norall and Brust felt this topic was so important that, in addition to a short chapter about bullying, they provide additional information in the Resources section.) Tim Goldstein is a neurodiversity communication specialist. His Aspergers diagnosis answered a lot of questions and changed his life's work. Now, he spends his time advising Human Resource departments, talent professionals and managers who are trying to incorporate 'Aspies' (as they self-identify) into the workforce. Tim says that he's 'on the spectrum' which refers to being on the Autism Spectrum. He's a highly accomplished entrepreneur and engineer. He, Mark and Patrick had a lively discussion and opened up the conversation to better understand the proliferation of Aspies in industry Topics included: • What is neurodiversity vs. neurotypical • Working in the bicycle business for 20 years and developing a solid business background • He was only recently diagnosed, four years ago. • How people communicate and how the provides a challenge for Aspies. This speaks to the words used, the tonality of the speaker and the body language. Aspy's can frequently misinterpret these signs. • Learn the Greek word: Alixrethmia, which means "no words for emotion." • What poor executive control and poor impulse control can do when working with Aspy's. • Tim wrote a book to capture all of this insight called, Geeks Guide to Interviews: 15 Critical Items for the Technical Type • His Temple Grandin story. She's one of the heroes that's brought Aspergers out into the mainstream conversation with her TED talk. • His discussion about the percentage of technical workers that have Asperger's, according to industry reports. It's much higher than you'd imagined • A few famous people who have/had Aspergers include; Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Albert Einstein, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.

Hi... In this 12th episode of the Aspiecast podcast, I mention some of the details surrounding me being sexually assaulted some years back, in my late 40s. Fortunately this was not an assault that resulted in me having to go to the hospital or having to worry about disease ramifications, but it was an incident that I had absolutely no understanding of how to get out of in advance, even though there was enough time for me to take evasive action. What transpired was an aggressive, large person pinning me down inside an empty restaurant dining room after the owner had left, with the owner trusting both of us to lock up after him. The person who assaulted me was just hired that evening, about 5 hours before he pinned me down on a bench seat. After he climbed on top of me, I remained completely still because I had no idea what I was supposed to do in the situation. He forcefully started to undress me, until he got excited to the point of climax. Luckily that was the end of it, and he wiped off my back with a napkin from the table next to him. I wanted to do this episode in large part to address the statistic that I heard some time back which says Aspies are more likely than the average person to be sexually assaulted. I see the reason for my particular experience quite clearly in hindsight, because of 3 contrtibuting factors that combined to make me an easy target. First is the fact that I give off signals of being somewhat different than average and appearing more lonesome as a result. Hindsight tells me that people who need to exert control over others gravitate to me. Secondly, because it is so hard to find friends, I find myself very welcoming to anyone who befriends me even for a short time. I continually remain oblivious to the warning signals that neurotypicals may be better able to sense that would indicate that it isn't wise to interact or befriend certain people. This second aspect also applies to the types of business owners who I take on as clients. I can't sense the warning signals from those owners that other business consultants might be able to see, and as a result I get very friendly and dedicated to doing work for very unethical business owners who hire very sketchy employees. Thirdly, it is rare for me to have instinctive indications on how to handle completely new situations involving unexpected types of interaction with another person. When such an interaction also involves something that looks like it will present a threat of some sort, there is no advance information in my brain that tells me how to react in a way that will protect myself and prevent the situation from getting worse. A fourth issue is also a factor. In both of the sexual assaults I have experienced, alcohol was a key advance contributor. Alcohol as a contributor comes from the fact that it is so much easier to obtain the social interaction I desparately need most of the time by repeatedly placing myself in scenarios or venues where everyone is feeling good and socializing while getting more and more inebriated. One other thing about this episode: i use the term yogurt while describing the situation. If you know where I got the yogurt connection from, do feel free to email me to let me know: aspiecast@gmail.com. As always do check out the books & videos I have found to be important at: http://books.aspiecast.com Thanks, Steve

Ok guys, if you need a laugh, this is the interview for you. I first heard Jennifer McIlwee Myers speak at this year's Portland Autism Conference, and I cackled laughed. Inappropriately loudly. Then I laughed the entire way through this interview, AND I laughed again a week later while editing the audio. I am a fan. She co-wrote Asperger's and Girls in 2006, and wrote How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger's in 2010. Her new book, Growing Up with Sensory Issues will be released in July, 2014.
