On our podcast – At Home, On Air – we continue our mini-series, Changemaker Interviews, where we highlight the impact of changemakers on the quality of our lives. These individuals have challenged and changed systems, introduced new ways of thinking and told previously untold stories. In this third installment of the series, we welcome author and climate activist, Harry “Rick” Moody. We discuss his latest book, Climate Change in an Aging Society, and explore the concept of “Eco Elders,” why hope is essential for meaningful action, and practical steps older adults can take from home. Moody challenges the paralyzing effects of pessimism and encourages everyone to “think globally, act locally” through simple but significant changes. This discussion highlights how older adults, while more vulnerable to climate impacts, can still be powerful agents of change in addressing one of our greatest global challenges. Join us as we explore the intersection of climate change and aging, emphasizing both individual and collective action. Calling us all to action, Moody urges, "I encourage everybody to find that one thing that you can do, and do it!" We hope Rick's personal stories and insights will inspire you to make positive changes in your own home, life, and community. Angela is joined by special guest, Zora Benhamou, to examine the multifaceted experiences of menopause, exploring how cultural attitudes and personal stories shape women's journeys through this natural transition. Zora shares her fascinating project of interviewing women from various countries about their menopause experiences, revealing that while symptoms may be universal, perceptions and responses differ significantly across cultures. She also highlights the importance of awareness and education around menopause, discussing common symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings, and sleep disturbances, while also addressing the stigma surrounding hormone therapy KEY TAKEAWAYS Menopause is a universal experience, but cultural attitudes towards it vary significantly. In some countries, women are more open to discussing their experiences, while in others, there is a stigma that leads to rejection of such conversations. Fatigue, mood swings, and sleep disturbances are among the most common symptoms of menopause, often overshadowing hot flashes. Many women are unaware of the full range of menopause symptoms, which can include over 100 different manifestations. The perception of stress plays a crucial role in how women experience menopause. Women in less stressful environments or with a more relaxed attitude tend to cope better with menopausal symptoms, often attributing their resilience to their overall life perspective. There is a lack of awareness and acceptance of hormone therapy in many cultures. Many women are hesitant to consider hormone replacement therapy due to fears of negative health effects, despite the potential benefits it can offer during menopause. BEST MOMENTS "Menopause happens to everyone. No one's getting away with it. We all experience very, very similar symptoms. However, the attitudes are different." "I always say that I'm most worried about the asymptomatic woman, because she's the one who's not going to be aware of what's going on under the hood." "It's incredible that we've never been told... that a woman will lose her periods somewhere between 45 and 55." "Fatigue is something that's big on the list... but I think more than the mood swings would be the sleep." Harry R. Moody on 50 years in the field of aging and making the world a better place Harry “Rick” Moody, Ph.D., shares his opinions on positive aging, climate change, and the importance of finding meaning and purpose in later life. Gerontologist, professor, executive, speaker, writer, and activist, he is Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fielding Graduate University's Creativity and Wisdom Program and author of the hallmark textbook Aging: Concepts & Controversies, in its 10th edition. About Dr. Moody Harry R. Moody is a graduate of Yale University and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy at Columbia University, Hunter College, New York University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz.  He recently retired as Vice President and Director of Academic Affairs for AARP in Washington, DC.  He is currently Visiting Professor at Tohoku University in Japan, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fielding Graduate University's Creativity and Wisdom Program. Dr. Moody previously served as Executive Director of the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College and Chairman of the Board of Elderhostel (now Road Scholar). Moody is the author of over 100 scholarly articles, as well as a number of books including: Abundance of Life: Human Development Policies for an Aging Society (Columbia University Press, 1988) and Ethics in an Aging Society (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992). His most recent book, The Five Stages of the Soul, was published by Doubleday Anchor Books and has been translated into seven languages worldwide.  He is the editor of the Climate Change in an Aging Society and Human Values in Aging newsletters. In 2011 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society on Aging and in 2008 he was named by Utne Reader Magazine as one of “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.” Key Takeaways Internalized ageism contributes to self-limiting beliefs, like: “I'm too old to play tennis anymore.” “I'm too old to learn to play an instrument,” You are never too old to learn. There are small things we can do for climate change that add up when you connect with other people doing small things. Begin where you are. Think globally, act locally. It is a false narrative to think you either act as an individual or act politically. You can and should do both because one reinforces the other. Positive aging begins by changing the way you think. Begin by believing there is always something you can do to make a difference in your own life and the lives of others. Aging is diminished reserve capacity. But that means reserve capacity. Decrement with compensation means recognizing there will be limitations and then finding an alternative (Ex: you can't run anymore, so you walk.) Look for opportunities, find them and act on them. Dreaming is a natural organic function of humans and all mammals. Dreams show us what we already know, but do not yet see. The young and old are the most vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. Successful intergenerational connections require reciprocity and mentoring in both directions. Welcome back to Season 6! You might've noticed that we changed the name of the show to more accurately reflect the focus, which is to explore the transition from midlife to old age. [B]OLDER seemed a bit too general, so it's now [B]OLD AGE. Given our ageist society, it requires [b]oldness to say proudly, "I am old." This season our goal is to be even more honest and vulnerable about what it's like as the clock ticks away. For this first episode, Debbie is joined by her husband, Sam Harrington, a popular recurring guest who is known for his dry humor. He's a retired physician and an author. They start by talking about how aging has suddenly accelerated for both of them, in their early 70s. Sam says he can see his telomeres fraying when he looks in the mirror. He notes that only a decade ago they still looked remarkably young in photos. (See photo accompanying this episode; in 2014 Debbie and Sam were hanging out in Madagascar with lemurs.)//////////Don't miss the Behind The Scenes for every episode in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter. Leave a comment or question on Substack and she promises to respond.//////////They also talk about the long vigil of accompanying a dying parent and how that affects your own sense of old age; how health span has noticeably increased in the past 50 years;  and what the stunning demographic shift to an aging society will mean. By 2030, there will be more adults over 65 than children under 18. Debbie notes the parallel between the acceleration of aging and the acceleration of global warming. At first the changes are slow and hardly noticeable. Then they happen all at once, like this past summer. But the conversation veers back to the physiological fact of aging. Sam's favorite mantra is that "80 might be the new 60, but 86 is the new 85." The current research to better understand and to slow aging may be too late to benefit them, Sam says.  Mentioned in this episode or useful:Definition of heuristicDefinition of telomeresLiving to 120 is becoming an imaginable prospect (The Economist, Sept. 28, 2023)How a Vast Demographic Shift Will Reshape the World (The New York Times, July 16, 2023)The Washington Gerontocracy (The New Yorker, September 24, 2023)AT PEACE: Choosing a Good Death After a Long Life by Samuel Harrington MD (Hachette, 2018)Earlier podcast episode: S5-EP7: Andrew Steele on Research at the Cellular Level That Could Slow AgingSam's summer project: Island Workforce Housing on Deer Isle, Maine. Connect with Debbie:[B]OLD AGE podcast[B]OLD AGE newsletter on SubstackEmail: thebolderpodcast@gmail.comDebbie & Sam's joint blog: Gap Year After Sixty Facebook: @debbieweilInstagram: @debbieweilLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/debbieweil Our Media Partners:CoGenerate (formerly Encore.org)MEA and with thanks to Chip ConleyNext For Me (former media partner and in memory of Jeff Tidwell)How to Support this podcast:Leave a review on Apple PodcastsSubscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or SpotifyCredits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Far Out MediaMusic: Lakeside Path by Duck Lake

Canada's adult working-age population is shrinking, bringing new challenges around labour force demands, housing, healthcare, technology adoption and traditional models of business and education. With Statistics Canada projecting that 25% of Canadians will be over the age of 65 by 2036, the country is in the midst of a profound transformation. Canada is not alone, with this demographic shift happening across the developed world. From changes to the tax base to skills shortages to the need for new products and inclusive design approaches, the realities of population aging are upon us, and so are the opportunities for communities, businesses, and governments to respond in new ways to foster economic growth, inclusion and support for at-risk populations and the health of rural communities. Bradley Schurman is an expert on demographic change and how it disrupts worldwide social, cultural, political, and economic norms. His deep understanding of population shifts, coupled with his grasp of emerging trends, makes him an authoritative voice in the future of us.

Aging issues won't disappear, despite whoever is in office. Second, we can't expect more federal funding or new entitlements. But this could be good if it pushes us to think out of the box, particularly regarding aging in place, by focusing on the situation facing older middle-income Americans.  While low-income older adults desperately need funding and support, 70% of older Americans (70 million people) do not qualify for government or not-for-profit programs but, at the same time, cannot afford expensive retirement communities or 24/7 care. These people have some resources, and most want to age in place. Many own their homes and spend out-of-pocket for care, which is often challenging to locate and manage. Without question, this is a cadre that needs better support.  In this program, Louis Tenenbaum will discuss several out-of-the-box options that businesses, government, and baby boomers can do to ensure their housing meets the needs of an aging populationAbout Louis Tenenbaum:A leading authority on aging in place, Louis Tenenbaum is the founder of HomesRenewed, a coalition of business, government, non-profits, and consumer stakeholders. The idea that immigration is the solution to the aging of American society has become an article of faith among those arguing for ever-higher levels of new arrivals. It's not a crazy argument; it just happens to be incorrect. In reality, the impact immigrants can have on population aging is small. Immigration certainly makes our population larger, but not younger. Guest Steven Camarota joins us to debunk this conventional wisdom and suggest alternatives for addressing the challenges of an aging society. Steven Camarota is the director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies. China to allow all couples to have 3 kids, in effort to cope with aging society

China's ruling Communist Party said May 31 it will ease birth limits to allow all couples to have three children instead of two in hopes of slowing the rapid aging of its population, which is adding to strains on the economy and society. The ruling party has enforced birth limits since 1980 to restrain population growth but worries the share of working-age people is falling too fast while the share aged 65 and over is rising. That threatens to disrupt plans to turn China into a prosperous consumer society and global technology leader. A ruling party meeting led by President Xi Jinping decided to introduce “measures to actively deal with the aging population,” the official Xinhua News Agency said. It said leaders agreed “implementing the policy (where) one couple can have three children and supporting measures are conducive to improving China's population structure.” Leaders also agreed China needs to raise its retirement age to keep more people in the workforce and improve pension and health services for the elderly, the state news agency said. He is the author of several books, journal articles, book chapters, and media interviews on aging bodies, critical gerontology, biopolitics, cognitive impairment, and health technologies. His current research involves partnerships and collaborations on funded projects related to quantified aging and digital technologies, as well as a new book project on Self, Mind, and Body in Later Life.   We’re all aging, and everyone’s talking about it!   Key Takeaways [:39] Jenna introduces today’s guest and we launch today's interview by asking Dr. Katz to tell us a bit more about the ACT Project. [3:25] Dr. Katz talks about how his current research integrates into all three aspects of the ACT Project, as well as some of his offshoot interests in Boomer music! [5:51] We ask Dr. Katz to dive deeper into the communications aspect of his research and he explains how the three aspects of the projects were eventually developed. [8:07] What is the Quantified Self Movement? Stephen explains how that phenomenon drove his use of the term “Quantified Aging” as a way to explain a new set of cultural practices that are shaping aging and the research he has been leading on this front. [12:32] We ask if Dr. Katz actually tests the devices and he shares all of the areas of research he’s involved in, from code design to walking ethnography. [15:19] What is Dr. Katz’s take on the potential for technologies to increase independence in the future. [19:14] Emily asks if Stephen sees a way for technology to help change the image in the culture around aging. [23:25] We talk about technologies problematizing and stigmatizing aging as well as the elitist, caucasian, heteronormative language and imagery used to promote programs. [31:52] Stephen touches on the improvements he would like to see in terms of responsible, socially contextualized technologies as well as a real commitment by tech companies to offer tested products to older markets. [34:22] We ask Dr. Katz to weigh in on the sources and effects of the Neoliberal narrative and policies on health and aging. [40:46] Emily goes off script again and asks Dr. Katz to talk about his research around gaming and brain plasticity, and weigh in on the possibility of us being able to change, improve, and protect our own brains from decline. [47:24] We ask Dr. Katz to share his thoughts on data privacy issues as they pertain to the use wearable technology as well all the impacts of the bigger companies’ involvement in the healthcare field. Policy for old people has been unusually contentious recently. The pension records debacle is one of the most-covered issues for a year or so, and fundamental pension reform remains high on the policy agenda (with the LDP and the DPJ taking quite different positions). A substantial reform of Long-Term Care Insurance (Kaigo Hoken) was implemented in 2006 without too much fuss, but introduction of a new system for medical care of the old-old in April brought sharp protests. Is all this a blip, or will old-age policy be a contentious arena in national politics and the grassroots? John Creighton Campbell is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Michigan and Visiting Professor in Health Policy and Administration at the Keio University Medical School. He is the author of Contemporary Japanese Budget Politics, How Policies Change: The Japanese Government and the Aging Society, and (with Naoki Ikegami), The Art of Balance in Health Policy: Maintaining Japan's Low-Cost, Egalitarian System (all also available in Japanese).
