The Setting Trick: Conversations with World Class Bridge Players
Ep. 87 Tuva Nilsmark: BridgeQueen Today's guest is Tuva Nilsmark, who goes by BridgeQueen on YouTube. As a bridge lover and social media user, Tuva saw a gap in the YouTube landscape for bridge videos that are light, short, easy to understand, and fun to watch. She fills that gap with her tutorials and weekly Funbridge Friday videos, hoping to inspire new players to hone their skills. Bridge isn't just community for Tuva – it's a part of her family. Tuva's boyfriend is Simon Ekenberg, whom she met through bridge. She also picked up bridge as a teenager to play with her grandparents, whom she promptly abandoned for stronger players. Boye Brogeland suggested I interview Tuva for this episode. You can listen to my conversation with Boye here: https://www.thesettingtrick.com/https/thesettingtricklibsyncom/ep-84-boye-brogeland-bridge-at-the-edge-and-in-person Subscribers to The Setting Trick email list check your email or to subscribe click here: https://www.thesettingtrick.com/ You can follow Tuva on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/bridge.queen/?hl=en Tuva's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@bridgequeen Episode Highlights: 2:00 – Tuva is in a fantasy football league with her boyfriend Simon Ekenberg other bridge players: “Really good bridge players; they suck at fantasy football though.” 4:58 –Tuva started her YouTube channel recently, to a largely positive reception. You can watch her videos here: https://www.youtube.com/@bridgequeen 8:14 – How Tuva got started in bridge 11:19 – Tuva's father is the captain of the Swedish Open 12:48 – The first time Tuva saw Simon 15:14 – As if her bridge-playing family wasn't enough, you might also know of Tuva's mother, Catrin Nilsmark, who is a golfer and two-time captain of the European Solheim Cup Team. 22:15 – With her Funbridge Fridays series, Tuva hopes to show a different side of bridge. She wants to counter the overly serious image that bridge can have. 29:17 – Tuva and Simon played a bridge and golf event and beat Ola Rimstedt. 36:30 – Tuva's first partner was her father 42:32 – The BridgeQueen YouTube channel has a video called “Learn Bridge in only Three Minutes:” https://youtu.be/MxWO8EFujbw?feature=shared 49:01 – The most pressure Tuva has felt playing bridge so far 55:04 – Tuva's ultimate goal is to win the Venice cup 58:55 – Another long term goal of Tuva's is beating Simon
Co-hosts Alex Moss and Burton DeWitt are back with a new episode after the World Series of Darts Finals. The boys start the show by discussing who they think is the current favourite to win the next PDC World Darts Championship, following Luke Littler's latest triumph in Amsterdam at the weekend, and also reflect on Michael Smith's run to the final. Alex and Burton also give their thoughts on this week's Players Championship double header and pick out the players who caught their eye. The boys finish the show with an early look at the current list of international qualifiers for Ally Pally, before looking at who could qualify via the CDC rankings after this weekend's season finale. Brian Raman (16:02) calls in after winning the WDF-ranked Italian Open at the weekend. The Belgian reflects on his two years with a PDC tour card, having shoulder surgery at the end of 2023 and his comeback so far this year, getting back in the winners' enclosure in Italy last week, and his late push to qualify for Lakeside. Xanti Van den Bergh (50:18) also stops by after his run to the Italian Open final. The Belgian talks about growing up in a darting family, along with his older brother Dimitri, winning his first WDF ranking title at the Swedish Open last month, his friendship with Brian Raman, and his own goal of trying to qualify for the WDF World Championships. *** This podcast is brought to you in association with Darts Corner - the number one online darts retailer! In bye gone moons, Trump inadvertently quoted Ralf Waldo Emerson, “When you strike at the King, you must kill him.” Yet on Saturday July 13, Donald Trump survived an attempt to gun him down at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Will this be one of those pivotal moments which go down in history - like the assassination of Lincoln; of Archduke Franz Ferdinand; JFK, RFK, or MLK? Or will it be like with Gavrilo Princip's predecessors, assassins are only remembered if they succeed. Others tried to assassinate the Archduke and History won't remember them because they missed. Alex and Jason predict that Thomas Matthew Crooks will not be a household name for long and the impact he will have on history is likely very much the opposite of what he might have intended. Alex shares how she felt while hearing the news at a baseball tournament, while Jason shares his experience hearing the news from Saltsjoboden at the Swedish Open of backgammon. Professional gamblers noted to Jason that after the assassination attempt that the betting markets moved instantly in favour of Trump, even more so than after Biden's poor debate performance. As always Jason and Alex try to order the disorder by discussing the messianic narratives around Trump and how his supporters always viewed him as a perennial victim/martyr. Now having survived this attempt on his life, it seems likely that his saintliness and blessedness in their eyes will morph into a kind of hagiography. We conclude by discussing how the Democrats could use this moment to try to rally the country together around a new kind of unifying vision. 'The Artist' Kevin Painter retired from the PDC darting scene in 2021 when he didn't make it through Q School. Like a lot of players his darting career began in the BDO but come the early noughties he made the switch to the PDC. It was there he began to flourish. In 2004, he narrowly lost out to Phil Taylor in the deciding sudden death leg of the world final. He made a couple of other semi final appearances at the worlds too, 2003 and 2008. The latter of those years Kevin had what he describes as his greatest win, when he knocked out the defending world champion at the time, Raymond Van Barneveld in the last 16. In 2011 Kevin finally got his hands on a major trophy; The 2011 Players Championship. A result which earned him a place in the 2012 Premier League. Kevin has also won numerous other trophies. amongst them, the 2000 Swedish Open and 2002 Bob Anderson Classic. My chat with him covers memories of his great career and we look ahead to the very first 'Seniors' World Darts Championship in a few weeks, an event which Kevin is competing in. I hope you enjoy the interview!I've included Kevin's walk on song, 'I predict a riot' in this podcast. You can hear the song along with this interview by visiting the below link.
