On today's episode, I talk to musician Lou Barlow. Originally from Ohio, Lou formed his first band Deep Wound in 1982, while attending high school in western Massachusetts. Deep Wound's drummer was J Mascis, and when that band broke up, Lou and J formed Dinosaur, later to become Dinosaur Jr. The early years of the band were acclaimed but tumultuous, and after their third album, he was asked to leave the band. Lou then turned his attention to his other band Sebadoh, his side project Sentridoh, and later his other group Folk Implosion. Throughout the years, these projects - including Dinosaur Jr. - have all waxed and waned, but most recently, Lou recorded songs for Dinosaur Jr.'s latest album Sweep It Into Space, which was released in April, and his own solo album, Reason to Live, which was released at the end of May on Joyful Noise! Have you ever been listening to Sebadoh and thought to yourself "wow, this song is great, I really want to know what the guy singing it thinks about the 1978 Disney live action movie The Cat from Outer Space"? Indie rock legend Lou Barlow, of Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion, and more, joins Garrett Martin to talk about that movie and its similarities to E.T.,  as well as '70s Disney in general, the viewing habits of modern kids, and the two new records he released this spring: Dinosaur Jr.'s Sweep It Into Space, and his own solo album Reason to Live.

Nick has two albums to present this week. The first has been on his radar for a while and it did not disappoint his expectations! Black Midi “Cavalcade” was just released and it's worth a listen if you're into 80's (and up) King Crimson or Bowie's “Blackstar”. In other news, “Sweep It Into Space” by Dinosaur Jr. has been received very well by the critics & Nick very much disagrees with their assessment.Songs:Black Midi - “Chondromalacia Patella”Re:rec - “Guys Like Girls That Look Like Bears”Black Midi - “Ascending Forth”Dinosaur Jr. - “I Ran Away”Greg was inspired by all the big festivals popping back up this summer & he's created a new segment called “FestQuest”. It's kind of a choose-your-own-festival adventure. This week we're creating our most enticing festival, a festival we would have to go to if it were announced.Jaystock, a three day outdoor festival featuring The Rolling Stones, Radiohead & Tedeschi Trucks Band, will be coming to Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego next May; and Nickapalooza, a four day outdoor festival featuring Black Midi, Black Pumas & Radiohead, will be in Reykjavik Iceland this July. Neither are real, both sound like a lot of fun.Song: Charles Mingus Sextet - “So Long Eric”For our ninety-fifth episode, Jay brings us the music of 1995, with a twist. We cover the music news from the year and then, right when we're about to discuss the music, Jay surprises everyone with a “Tag the Track”: Music of 1995 Edition show. It was a fantastic way to listen back to the songs from that year. We hope you enjoy!Song: Phish - “You Enjoy Myself”

The legendary Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh joined me for this interview. His band, Dinosaur Jr., released an album called "Sweep It Into Space" last month. The album had the classic Dinosaur Jr. sound, so if you are a fan of the band, then you are going to want to check it out. Some topics from the rest of the episode included getting music out in the 80s compared to today, college radio and fanzines, early shows, staying true to himself as a musician, having to leave his family to go on tour, and of course, plenty of Dinosaur Jr. stories. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Our guest on the show this week is J Mascis. Along with Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, he formed Dinosaur Jr in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984. After their original run, which ended acrimoniously in 1989, Mascis continued on with Dinosaur Jr, the Fog, and plenty of other wiggy and interesting side projects. But in 2005, the original Dino Jr. lineup returned with a genuine comeback classic, Beyond. Since then, they’ve reliably put out a great album every couple of years. Plenty of bands come back in some diminished form, but not these guys. Their latest is Sweep It Into Space, produced by previous Transmissions guest Kurt Vile and Mascis. It’s full of incredible riffs and trademark melodic resignation. It was great to have J on to discuss it, along with his solo albums, early SST days, playing with heroes like Ron Asheton of the Stooges, and more. Listen for a special appearance by J’s dog, Candy.

Remfry and Steve start this week's show on a sombre note as we pay tribute to Jim Steinman, the colourful composer behind hits like Bat Out Of Hell and Total Eclipse Of The Heart, who passed away earlier this week from kidney failure after being ill for some time. In other news, the internet has been a-buzz with hype after Mudvayne announced they are set to return to US festivals to play their first shows since their hiatus in 2010. Exciting news for sure, but maybe not quite as exciting as many people seem to be making out.  Albums reviewed this week are Sweep It Into Space by Dinosaur Jr. (24:30) Californian Soil by London Grammar (44:06) Vital by Big I Brave (1:05:18) and Intermission by Assertion (1:17:10) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
