Relentlessly make space for the things that matter most. Compliance is not the same thing as magic. Process matters and so does product. These are just a few of the ideas Jason Patera is obsessed with, which he brings daily to his work as the head of the Chicago Academy for the Arts.Guest: Jason PateraResources, Transcript, and Expanded Show NotesIn This Episode:“Pretty much all you need to do at any time to change someone's life is decide to do it. That's it, right? It's not the facilities that changes someone's life. It's not the mission statement that changes someone's life. It's not the curriculum, it's the people. Right. And most of the time, all we have to do, especially with young people, you meet them where they're at, and, and you have this power to, to help transform their entire life.” (7:02)“What I promise to them is that I'm never going to be some random jerk in a suit who you've only met the day you've done something bad. And you're a teenager, so you're going to do something dumb. When that happens and we have to have a conversation about it, I endeavor for that to be our 40th conversation. So as we have to navigate this thing, we're doing it based on a human relationship and not one of the title that I have or the role that you play in the school.” (19:54)“Most of what we think are our limits are, are illusions, for ourselves personally, and for our communities. And a habit we can get into as school leaders is to fall into the trap that school is somehow already defined, and learning is somehow already defined, and procedures are somehow already defined. And we need to figure those out and do them, when in fact we have tremendous power to just decide what it's going to be.” (41:26)Related Episodes: 40, 36, 34, 32, 27,15, 6 Hosted on Acast. IN EPISODE 140: Ever get one of those customer satisfaction surveys asking you to rate your experience? Or whether you're likely to recommend a product to others? Even if you bother to respond, those type of measures don't provide meaningful answers -- or insights. In Episode 140, Dave Norton makes the case for measuring customer experience with modes, not "moments." By focusing on "time well spent," companies can peek inside the emotional decision-making process that guides consumer behavior. Dave provides three specific questions to measure "time well spent," how this framework can produce similar gains in employee experience, and why every company needs a strong point of view. After listening to Dave, you'll think twice about how you try to reach and retain customers. ABOUT DAVE NORTON: Dave Norton is the founder and principal of Stone Mantel, an insights consultancy focused on helping companies create meaningful experiences for their customers. Some of those clients include Coca-Cola, Marriott, Disney, Nike and Walmart, among other notable brands. Dave is also the founder of The Collaboratives, a subscription-based research program that publishes annual reports on customer experience and consumer behavior, and is the author of Digital Context 2.0: Seven Lessons in Business Strategy, Consumer Behavior, and the Internet of Things.

Welcome to an episode with Bill George, former chairman and CEO of Medtronic and currently a professor at Harvard Business School. He has written two of the most enduring leadership classics of all time: Authentic Leadership and True North. Now, Bill has written a new book aimed at the next generation of leaders, the Emerging Leaders Edition of True North, coauthored with millennial entrepreneur Zach Clayton. Get Bill's new book here. This book is a clarion call to emerging leaders to step up to lead their organizations with their hearts, not just their heads, as authentic leaders who lead with purpose by inspiring and coaching their teammates. It heralds the end of the baby boomer era of Jack Welch, when too many leaders focused on maximizing shareholder value and taking shortcuts rather than building sustainable enterprises to serve all of their stakeholders. Our best hope for a better world is to empower the next generation of emerging leaders – not just those on top – to follow their True North to make this world better for everyone. The stories in this book, which came from 220 interviews with exceptional leaders, illustrate that most authentic leaders first discovered their True North through their life stories and crucibles, developed self-awareness, and then found their North Star – the purpose of their leadership. Wisdom learned from leaders like Satya Nadella, Mary Barra, Ken Frazier, Indra Nooyi, Ursula Burns, and Hubert Joly will guide emerging leaders at all levels in their development. Bill joined Medtronic in 1989 as president and chief operating officer, was chief executive officer from 1991-2001, and board chair from 1996-2002. He is currently a senior fellow at Harvard Business School, where he has taught leadership since 2004. Welcome to Strategy Skills episode 274, an episode with Bill George, former chairman and CEO of Medtronic and currently a professor at Harvard Business School.
