Today's guests are more than just bandmates. Friends since the first grade -- with matching tattoos to boot -- being founding members of the influential Kansas collective The Get Up Kids has taken Rob Pope and Jim Suptic (along with Matt Pryor and Rob's brother Ryan) to seemingly every corner of the world since their 1995 formation. This year marks the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough sophomore LP Something to Write Home About — an album layered in lovelorn distance and declarations of proving oneself. Back then, Jim and Rob say that getting the album out was a frustrating practice in learning who to trust; at the moment, currently on tour playing the album in full, the pair look at the release as a "coming-of-age" album, one that inspired and launched thousands of bands itself through its heroic melodies and relatable points of view. Recorded backstage at the legendary Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Jim and Rob discuss the two-sided coin of nostalgia, what inspires them about each other, and why maple syrup isn't always a positive smell. The band's 2LP Something to Write Home About reissue, complete with demos and previously unheard material, is available now via digital platforms, and physically on September 20th. Tour dates and more can be found at thegetupkids.com.
This week Aaron Woods is joined by NRL legend & one of the best front rowers of the modern era Andrew Fifita. Fifita talks his grand final winning try, his journey to the Sharks, why he chose to play for Tonga, why Mick Ennis is the best signing in Sharks history & so much more in the one of the best chats we've ever done! The Get Up Kids‘ classic 1999 album Something To Write Home About turns 25 this year, and the band is celebrating with an expanded reissue and a tour, and for the occasion, co-leaders Matt Pryor and Jim Suptic joined us on the BrooklynVegan podcast for an hour-long reflection on the album. They reminisced about how they evolved from their very humble beginnings and their 1997 debut album Four Minute Mile into the band that wrote one of the most influential emo albums of all time just two years later, the label feeding frenzy that followed Four Minute Mile‘s success and the decision to go with then-little-known label Vagrant, the longer demoing process that helped make Something To Write Home About a much more refined album than its predecessor (and that's being immortalized with the second disc of demos included with this new reissue), their headlining STWHA tour with openers At the Drive-In, their 2001 support tours for Green Day and Weezer, the mainstream emo boom that Something To Write Home About heavily inspired and that The Get Up Kids moved away from with 2002's On A Wire, and more. Matt Pryor returns to the show and we discuss his new memoir "Red Letter Days", its conception, the writing process and stories from the book including Matt being diagnosed with diabetes at a young age, how he managed the disease as a child, on the road and in modern times. We also discuss the early days of the Get Up Kids, their creative process, doing backup vocals on Coalesce's "There is Nothing New Under the Sun" LP, signing with Vagrant Records, recording and releasing the "Something to Write Home About" LP, stories from the road, the band's shift in sound for the "On a Wire" LP, their initial breakup and more.
With a name borrowed from the Get Up Kids' second EP, Red Letter Days finds front man Matt Pryor delving deep into personal stories. The memoir was adapted – in part – from the musician's journals, beginning with his childhood diabetes diagnoses, through his musical journey. Formed in Kansas in the mid-90s, the Get Up Kids went on to become one of the most influential acts of emo's second wave (referred to as the tongue-in-cheek “e-word” throughout). Pryor joins us to discuss his musical life, personal struggles and the act of getting it all down on paper. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Matt Pryor a singer, songwriter, podcaster and author form Lawrence, Kansas. He is a founding member of the Get Up Kids, The New Amsterdam's and host's the podcast Nothing To Write Home About and 25 Years On The Street. His debut memoir, Red Letter Days (out 1.23.24 Washed Up Book) is taken from journal entries between 1990-2000 and is made up of short vignettes that follows his life as a musician growing up, pursing the dream of success and his earliest experiences touring. He also shares his early childhood growing up in Lawrence and his struggle with childhood diabetes. In this episode, Matt shares how writer Frank Turner encouraged him to write his memoir, why the book helped him hit a welcomed rock bottom and why finishing the book put into a depression. He explains how a simple writing exercise evolved into Red Letter Days, why the editing process was foreign to him and how songwriting and story writing are similar in his process. Joe and Matt discuss the beauty and positivity of “the pit” and they discover they were born in the same hospital along with their mutual pal Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. Today on the podcast, we welcome back Matt Pryor. Matt is on to talk about his recently announced memoir he wrote called Red Letter Days. It's up for pre-order right now, or if you're in the future, head over to Washed Up Books to get one! Matt and I discuss how he started writing, how he feels about it now, how his adversity and stories helped him deal with many things, and how he's better for it. Quick note: We mentioned a guy named Frank early on. We were talking about Frank Turner, the musician who helped Matt start the process of writing. This has been a fantastic partnership where Matt trusted me as I dove deeper into book publishing, and he did the same by bearing his soul in this book. I hope you enjoy the book, or if you're coming back after reading and listening to this, I hope it adds to the pages you've read. Either way, thanks for supporting Washed Up Emo. With the launch of Matt's first memoir, "Red Letter Days," I listened to the first time Matt and I spoke for the podcast. It was great that I thought it was worth having those who may have missed. Plus, this was a big launching point for the show as I was starting to get bigger and bigger guests. Crazy to think that was 10 years ago this month. Please pre-order Matt's book "Red Letter Days" at WashedUpBooks.com Newsletter sign up Notes from episode 20 I wrote in 2013... "It was an absolute honor to have Mr. Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids be a part of the podcast. I just noticed after listening back to this episode that the only person left to interview from my opening musical montage is Jeremy Enigk. What a trip it's been. Matt was great to chat with and even had to scold his kids who you can hear at times during the interview. We dove into the first time Matt sang live in front of someone, Kansas City, Boy's Life, ripping off "Static Prevails" and why bands do 10 year anniversaries. Matt also mentioned his opinion on the word "emo" and throughout the podcast you can hear his voice ring with truth that also transcends to the bands he was in and his way of life. And you have to hear what song The Get Up Kids never have to practice that you love. Finally, download his recently launched podcast "Nothing To Write Home About" which is a great listen and unique insight into the scene." Learn more about your ad choices. Today, on the podcast, there is a massive announcement. This morning, I launched a book publishing company called Washed Up Books. After two volumes of Anthology of Emo, I really felt there was more to do in this space and because of your support, it's time to make this a real thing. Today, I'm proud to announce Red Letter Days, the debut novel from Matt Pryor from the Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams, and Terrible Twos. Today, it's available for preorder via WashedUpBooks.com or via our friends at PolyvinylRecords.com. And yes, it is available worldwide. Wherever you are in the world, you can get this! I thought it would be fun to recap the releases of Anthology of Emo and how we got to doing Red Letter Days with the designer Jesse Reed. Jesse's day job is Order, a design firm, Standards Manual book series, and in a fantastic band called Sharkswimmer, where he's the drummer. It'll make sense as you hear the episode. Jesse was invaluable to making these a reality, and we go into the story of how we started doing books and dive into books and music. This is overwhelming to have happened. It's amazing to think someone like Matt Pryor, whom I idolized, has put pen to paper and written a fantastic series of stories that I have been waiting to tell you for so long. Truly, thank you for the support on this podcast and the books. Shout out to everyone who helped make the Anthologies happen, Polyvinyl Records, Ian King, and many others… This is just the start of Washed Up Books. Learn more about your ad choices.
