Our beloved Grace Valentine is back with a brand new book "The Better Friend: 12 Truths to Shift from Shallow and One-Sided Connections to Vibrant Friendships." Grace helps us rethink the way we connect with others and shares her wise and relatable insight on belonging, comparison, gossip, and the scriptures that equip us to be a better friend. We talk about the different types of friends and why we need each of them. Grace reminds us we are not alone as we pursue friendships especially when God designed us for community. In her own beautiful words "...I am praying that as you read these words, you will find peace from Jesus, unreasonable love, confidence to not give up, and friendships that make you better. Better is coming when you do life with the Giver of Life." Go buy her book!! It's a beautiful read for all of us, but we especially recommend it for your high school and college students. Why do we think boundaries are about making others behave when they're actually about our choices? Ever set a boundary only to feel like it didn't work? Maybe you told someone not to do something, and they did it anyway—so much for boundaries, right? Turns out, a lot of us have been thinking about boundaries all wrong! In this episode, we break down a powerful yet simple truth: a real boundary is something you will do, and it doesn't require the other person to do anything.
Welcome back to week two of I'd Rather Be Reading season 16! Today on the show we have the lovely Grace Valentine, here to talk about her new book The Better Friend: 12 Truths to Shift from Shallow and One-Sided Connections to Vibrant Friendships, which comes out March 11. We talked a lot in season 15 about friendship, and the conversation is spilling over to season 16, too. Grace is a TEDx speaker, the host of the podcast “Water Into Wine,” and is the author of five books. She's a contributing writer for Proverbs 31 Ministries—which I can't get enough of—and Live Original. She is a native of one of my favorite cities, New Orleans, and is a graduate of Baylor, which is also where my husband graduated from! (Although, admittedly, we graduated a million years before Grace did.) Grace now makes her home in Atlanta and is earning a degree at Asbury Theological Seminary. In The Better Friend, Grace tackles shallow friendships and how friendships that don't serve us can negatively impact our lives; she talks to us today about signs we might be settling in friendship; how to prioritize friendship in our busy lives; how to maintain friends and make new ones; her thoughts on long distance friendships and friendship breakups; what she wishes everyone knew about friendship; and her faith, which very obviously means so much to her. Take a listen to our powerful conversation. The Better Friend: 12 Truths to Shift from Shallow and One-Sided Connections to Vibrant Friendships by Grace Valentine

Are your compliments surface-level flattery, or a call-out of a person's attributes and efforts? In this episode, we're diving into the art of giving meaningful compliments, inspired by a powerful Instagram reel from Mel Robbins (@melrobbins). We often toss around compliments like "You're so smart" or "You look great," but how much do these words really impact the person receiving them? In this episode, we explore how to move beyond surface-level flattery and into the realm of truly edifying and encouraging others in a way that reflects God's love. Whether it's highlighting a friend's loyalty, admiring their contagious laughter, or acknowledging their growth in a specific area, we want to encourage you to speak words that matter. We also discuss the importance of recognizing the effort and intention behind someone's actions rather than just praising what comes naturally to them. Complimenting someone on a developed skill or a positive change they've made can be far more uplifting and motivating than a vague, general statement. It's about seeing the person, understanding their journey, and affirming the work God is doing in their lives. Ultimately, this episode is about cultivating a heart that looks for the good in others and speaks it out, not just to make them feel good, but to encourage them to continue growing in their walk with Christ. When we give compliments that are thoughtful and specific, we're not only building up our friends, but we're also participating in the bigger story that God is writing in their lives. So, tune in as we learn how to give compliments that inspire, uplift, and glorify God in the process. Can consciousness transform our lives and relationships? My recent conversation with Dr. Shefali would suggest so. What began as a discussion about self-awareness evolved into a deep exploration of how consciousness can transform every aspect of our lives, from our relationships to our sense of purpose.
