Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/594 Presented By: Togiak River Lodge, Northern Rockies Adventures, Yellowstone Teton Territory, Togens Fly Shop Have you ever wondered what it would be like to reel in a massive tarpon? Or perhaps you're curious about the critical factors in preserving bonefish, tarpon, and permit populations? Today, we dive deep into the conservation with Mark Rehbein from the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. Join us as we unravel why these three species are important for conservation efforts and explore the key habitats that need protection. Show Notes with Mark Rehbein on Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. 2:40 - Mark Rehbein started fly fishing at a young age due to his father's involvement in making Potomac River bass fishing videos. This project led them to connect with Lefty Kreh. His journey eventually took him to Alaska, where he lived in a tent and worked at a fly shop. Mark Rehbein's Journey to Bonefish & Tarpon Trust 09:25 - After following BTT for years and growing up with a love for bonefishing, Mark transitioned from a corporate job and internships to landing an entry-level events position at BTT. Despite having no prior events experience, Mark embraced the challenge and grew within the organization, eventually becoming the Director of Development. Mark also highlights two upcoming major events hosted by BTT: the Circle of Honor in May and the New York dinner in October, where notable individuals like Captain Rick Ruoff, Captain Joe Gonzalez, and Travis Holeman will be honored. Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit Conservation Efforts 19:38 - BTT focuses on the conservation of bonefish, tarpon, and permits. These species are crucial because protecting them also ensures the preservation of their habitats and benefits other marine life. BTT's initiatives involve extensive research, including tagging programs and mark-recapture studies, to gather essential data for informed conservation strategies. The focus revolves around three key areas: habitat preservation, water quality improvement, and effective fisheries management. "You gain credibility by the thimble full and lose it by the bucket full." - Dr. Aaron Adams In places like the Florida Keys, BTT utilizes tournament catch records and collaborates with organizations like the IGFA, Lower Keys Guides Association, and Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association to track trends in tarpon encounters, releases, and jumps. Life History of Tarpon 33:40 - Tarpons start with their offshore spawning in deep waters, where they release eggs that develop into Leptocephalus larvae. These larvae drift with ocean currents until they reach suitable habitats. As juveniles, tarpon thrive in mangrove estuaries, where optimal habitat conditions support their growth and development. Tarpons can live up to 80 years and spawn multiple times. The Importance of Mangroves 45:37 - Mangroves serve as crucial habitats for various juvenile fish species. They provide protection, food sources, and growth opportunities. Mangroves also contribute to coastal resiliency and are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Lefty Kreh's Legacy and One-Liners 53:35 - Mark shares anecdotes about Lefty Kreh's humorous and multifaceted personality, highlighting his knack for memorable one-liners. Despite his fame as an angler, Lefty's true legacy lies in his kindness, passion for fishing, and impact on those he encountered. Mark reflects on the impact Lefty had on him and how he strives to uphold Lefty's legacy by emulating his positive attitude and dedication to angling. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/594

Welcome to our first ever Travelogue edition of our podcast. We recently headed off to the Florida Keys for a much needed vacation. I have friends, Jennifer and Jimmy Hornsby, who live in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, and I stayed with them on the first day and the final day of my trip and it was they who suggested that the videos from the trip would make a good podcast. I thought that was a great idea and WALLA!! A new feature for our show was born!! In this episode we chronicle some of the amazing history of the Florida Keys from Henry Flagler's building of the Overseas Railroad that has now become the Overseas Highway A1A, to the boat of and house of Ernest Hemingway and his influence throughout the Florida Keys. a spotlight on two of the historic watering holes of Key West in Sloppy Joes and Captain Tony's Saloon where Hemingway once drank and Jimmy Buffett got his start. We will also introduce you to the Sea Turtle Hospital where saving this endangered species goes to an entirely new level, learn about the History of Diving at a museum in Islamorada, feed some Tarpons at Robbie's, and climb all over Fort Jefferson at the Dry Tortugas National Park. But no trip to the Florida Keys and Key West would be complete without a visit to Mallory Square overlooking the water at Sunset. Mallory Square is home to the Shipwreck Museum, Mason De Pepe for Cuban delicacies, countless shops, and the Sunset Celebration that features some of the most eclectic group of entertainers anywhere in America and in this episode we will introduce you to the most famous of all the buskers there, Dominique and his Flying House Cats! The Best Cat Show on Earth! It is all here in a road trip across the Florida Keys that everyone should get the chance to take at least once in a lifetime!!A Link to photographs and videos from the Florida Keys vacation that were used in this podcast:https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10156490731915658&type=3 Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!
On our recent episode, we had the pleasure of highlighting the latest addition to the IHG Hotels & Resorts' portfolio – the Hotel Indigo Panama City Marina. Part of their luxury segment, this splendid five-story, 124-room hotel is a proud new presence in Florida's historic waterfront district of Panama City. Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPPKR6pT9GM Samantha Spain is an asset to the property and was a great guest.Located within walking distance from a wide range of local restaurants, bars, and town fixtures, Hotel Indigo also offers guests easy access to cultural hubs like the Martin Theatre and the Panama City Center for the Arts. It's truly nestled in the heart of a thriving artistic community, making it an exciting focal point of our discussion.Adding to its charm, the hotel stands as a hidden jewel along St. Andrews Bay, a rich haven for marine life that spans over 20 miles. We also discussed the stark beauty of the saltwater flats, seagrass beds, and deep channels – marking it as one of the most diverse fishing grounds in the Florida Panhandle. We think our listeners who love outdoor activities will find the idea of exploring this place by boat and kayak quite appealing.A distinguishing factor about the Hotel Indigo brand, which we discussed, is that no two properties are alike. In keeping with this spirit, the Panama City property offers a distinct experience compared to the more familiar Panama City Beach, creating a quieter, yet equally vibrant ambiance. The hotel's design, heavily inspired by its seaside location and the history of the town, particularly captured our interest. The nautical-themed fixtures and installations, derived from the indigo plants that once populated the shorelines, reflect the locality's unique identity. Moreover, the hotel also pays homage to Panama City's original residents like Harry Felix, whose artistic influence shaped the local community. As we touched on the hotel's strategic location near the marina, we noted its two fresh restaurant and bar concepts, Tarpons and Steam on 5, sure to become neighborhood favorites. Offering a Southern twist on coastal cuisine and handcrafted cocktails, these are spots we believe our listeners would enjoy. We couldn't overlook the range of amenities the hotel provides, such as a fitness center, outdoor pool, and a firepit overlooking the bay, among others. Plus, it's in close proximity to major local attractions including Panama City Beach and educational institutions like Florida State University's Panama City campus, Gulf Coast State College, and more.Wrapping up the episode, we shared insightful comments from Carol Hoeller, Vice President of Hotel Indigo, and Jean Capps, General Manager, Hotel Indigo Panama City Marina. Both expressed their enthusiasm about the hotel's potential to reenergize the neighborhood and create a gathering spot for guests and locals to immerse themselves in the community's vibrant past. Their passion left us eagerly anticipating what Hotel Indigo Panama City Marina has in store.Website www.luxelifediscovered.com Youtube Roku Amazon Fire TV
On the latest episode of From The Back Fields to The Bronx, Ricky Keeler is joined by Tampa Tarpons beat writer John Brophy to talk about the first full week of the 2022 season for all four of the New York Yankees full-season affiliates. First up, John talks about the Tarpons having success on the mound with their pitching and he discusses what has stood out to him about the way Rachel Balkovec manages the Tarpons and connects with her players. Then, he discusses the improvements he is seeing in Anthony Garcia's plate discipline after conducting an interview with him earlier this week. When the conversation shifts to Somerset, Ricky and John talk about whether or not to be concerned about Anthony Volpe's slow start, the talent the rotation has led by Ken Waldichuk, and the team's high strikeout totals to begin the year. Scranton Wilkes-Barre had a rough week in Norfolk and Ricky thinks there should be some concern with the way Luis Gil and Deivi Garcia have struggled to begin the year. Finally, the duo looks at Hudson Valley's lineup and how even without Trey Sweeney at the moment, the Renegades may have the deepest lineup in the system. After talking about their position groups to watch this year, Ricky and John talk about the pitch clock that has helped decrease how long the games are going and whether or not it is a good or bad thing for the sport.

On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, the show is back in 2022 and we catch you up on everything that has gone on in the New York Yankees organization this winter from a minor league perspective. Ricky Keeler is joined by Tampa Tarpons/FCL beat writer John Brophy and Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat writer Alex Kielar for this episode. The episode begins with John talking about his time covering Yankees prospect mini-camp and some of his observations when watching Anthony Volpe take batting practice, how Jasson Dominguez looks in camp, and who has impressed him amongst players he didn't see live in 2021, including Hayden Wesneski. Then, the trio looks at the biggest Yankees storylines of the offseason, such as Rachel Balkovec being the new Tarpons manager this year and some of the new coaches at the major league level being promoted from within the minors (Dillon Lawson, Desi Druschel, Casey Dykes). Of course, the conversation also goes towards the ongoing MLB lockout and some of the stories where the minor leagues could be directly impacted. Keep an eye out for future episodes of From The Back Fields To The Bronx as the minor league season gets closer.
We talk about the recent hiring of Rachel Balkovec player development with young stars such as Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez. We also mix in talk about the Majors and Tampa area.

On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, co-managing editor Ricky Keeler takes a closer look at the only Yankees affiliate to make their league's championship series and that is the Tampa Tarpons in the Low-A Southeast. On Tuesday night, the Tarpons will begin a best-of-five series against the Bradenton Marauders (Pittsburgh Pirates). Games 1 and 2 will be in Bradenton and Tampa will host Games 3-5 since they finished with the best record (73-43). To help preview the championship series, Ricky was joined by Spenser Smith, the play-by-play announcer for the Bradenton Marauders. Spenser discussed some of the recent additions to the Pirates system from offseason trades the big league club made, what their pitching rotation could look like in this upcoming series, and whether Pirates fans should be optimistic about the direction of the team considering the success their lower levels of the farm system had this season. Plus, Spenser gave his thoughts on some of the prospects that have stood out to him on the Tarpons which include Trey Sweeney, Anthony Garcia, and Blas Castano just to name a few. Of course, we did ask him to give his thoughts on Jasson Dominguez as well. Be on the lookout for a more extensive preview of the series tomorrow put together by our Tampa Tarpons beat writer, John Brophy.

On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, Pinstriped Prospects managing editor Ricky Keeler is joined by Tampa Tarpons beat writer John Brophy to discuss how all four Yankees affiliates are either going for a division title or fighting for a spot in their league's championship series. Of course, all of our thoughts are with everyone dealing with the effects from Hurricane Ida and this includes the players for Double-A Somerset. If you feel inclined to help the players out, here is how you can do it: https://twitter.com/adoptmilbplayer/status/1433748112242270212 The conversation starts with the Tarpons playing in Bradenton this week in a championship preview. How have the Yankees top draft picks from this past July looked with Tampa so far such as Trey Sweeney and Cooper Bowman? Plus, John discusses Anthony Garcia's power surge, Antonio Gomez's development behind the plate, and what the Tarpons pitching rotation looks like after a lot of promotions have shaken it up. When looking at the other affiliates, the duo discusses Randy Vasquez's Double-A debut in Somerset, Beck Way's debut at High-A Hudson Valley, Jake Sanford having an under-the-radar year for the Renegades in the outfield, and JP Sears making a good impression in the Triple-A rotation. In terms of general minor league topics, Ricky and John go over which prospects they would have liked to see make their big-league debut if 40 players were still allowed to be on the major league roster in September, how they approach covering rehab assignments, and the six-game series format carrying over into next year.
