"The recording of dry leaves falling at Tikal in Guatemala made me think of similar sounds in nature, in particular rain and fire, and the long memories and unknowns of a place like Tikal, an ancient Mayan city located in a rainforest. did not want to alter or distort the original recording but used parts of it to underpin the shape of the piece, like the ground under our feet when we are making a colourful and maybe unpredictable journey through an unknown forest. The piece is named after Yum Kaax who was the Mayan god who protected the forest, plants and animals." One moment, 66 year old Raymond Ashcroft was walking through the legendary ruins of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site deep in the Guatemalan rainforest. The next? He was gone. No struggle. No witnesses. Just… silence. Authorities launched a desperate search within a half hour of his disappearance. But Raymond? He had disappeared into the shadows of history, just like the ancient Maya who once ruled these lands. Was it an accident? Did he wander off and couldn't find his way back? Was it foul play? Or something far stranger? Listen as we dive into Guatemala, the case of Raymond Ashcroft, and how to stay alive on vacation. Episode 201 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Action Point Systems It's a throwback to the early days of Decision Space. Jake and Brendan have a wide-ranging, loosely planned conversation about a topic in board games. Today that topic is action point systems, which we've explored recently in Tikal and Mexica. We also bring cooperative games into the conversation and think about implication of action points for game design. All aboard! The Interdecisional Spaceship sets off for the next 200 episodes. Games Mentioned Tikal, Mexica, Torres, Pandemic, Arkham Horror: the Living Card Game, Tigris & Euphrates, and more. Preplanners Age of Innovation and Fromage coming up soon as deep dives! Did you know there were mega cities in history that were way ahead of their time? Take Mohenjo-Daro in ancient India—it had an advanced drainage system and grid-like streets 4,500 years ago! Or the Mayan city of Tikal, with its towering pyramids and complex water management systems hidden deep in the jungle.

Just over 1,000 years ago, the ancient Maya world in Mesoamerica was turned upside down. Prominent cities like Tikal, Palenque, Copan and Calakmul, their great stone art and architecture left to be gradually reclaimed by the jungle. It's a time of decline known as the Maya Collapse. But what caused it? And did the entirety of Mayan civilisation really disappear? In today's episode of The Ancients Tristan Hughes is joined by podcaster and author Paul Cooper to explore this historic, yet mysterious collapse and delve into the trade networks, water systems, climate change, agricultural failure and civil unrest that made it possible.Presented by Tristan Hughes. Pablo Díaz is the chef and owner of the restaurants Mercado 24 and Dora La Tostadora in Guatemala City, Guatemala. His restaurants have never been about tasting menus or getting rankings but serving good food using the best ingredients at fairly reasonable prices. He has been one of the driving forces in Guatemala's modern culinary movement, helping small farmers and artisan fishermen connect with restaurants in the city in a fair way, while also changing the perception of diners of the quality of local ingredients.I first met Pablo in 2018 in Guate. It was my first time back in the country in years and it was just a quick stopover for a few days and it opened my eyes to how much was going on there at every level, from street food and markets to fine dining restaurants. I went with Diego Telles of the wonderful fine dining restaurant Flor de Lis on an intense whirlwind tour around the city and there was one very unlikely restaurant that stood out called Dora La Tostadora. It was a tostada shop, set in an old shoe store. I ended up writing about it for The New York Times and it was maybe one of my favorite restaurant stories I ever wrote there. There were just a couple of sidewalk seats and a sort of thrown together interior. “Inside the former shoe store are just a few wooden tables and a two-stool counter that's lined with a dozen or so bottles of different hot sauces,” I wrote. “The décor has a haphazard, thrown-together feel: Christmas lights, a poster of the ruins of Tikal on the wall, a cartoon cutout of Dora the Explorer, the tiny restaurant's namesake.”The restaurant began as a pop-up months before while his market driven restaurant Mercado 24 was in the process of moving locations and his staff still needed a job. I absolutely love tostadas, maybe even more than tacos, and these were some of the best I ever had. They had the absolutely right combination and proportions of proteins like fish and beef tongue with different herbs, oils and spices on a crispy tortilla. They moved to a larger location, and more recently into an even larger location, but it began with such a simple idea that makes so much sense, as does Mercado 24. Pablo's restaurants are creative and cool, but they aren't flashy. There are no tasting menus and he's not doing what he does for international appeal. He has been doing it for his community and after 10 years you can see the impact it has had.READ MORE AT NEW WORLDER.

Openers: Voyages Closers: Virtual Flea Markets (VFMs) at game conventions and other events It'll be no surprise to any listener that I care about the Spiel des Jahres. In addition to its decades-long strong & beneficial effect on our boardgaming hobby, these awards are a better predictor for me than any other. Predictor of what? Of the games I'll actually continue to own and play with family & friends. True, they skew more toward lighter games, but that's ok with family. And truthfully, that's the preference of myself and several of my longtime gaming friends, too. If you only know the SdJ from recent years when it homed-in on the lightest games, more about parties than strategy, then I'd forgive your feeling that these aren't an award process that means much to a hobbyist. I'm thinking of recent winners like Just One, Pictures, MicroMacro Crime City, and even Dorfromantik. However, while you may long for the days when the award was bestowed on more gamer-ish titles like Tikal, Torres, and El Grande, my own personal highlights are the titles in between those two groupings. I'm thinking of Catan, Thurn und Taxis, Carcassonne, Dominion, Hanabi, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, or Alhambra. Not only the winners, too--I've learned to pay attention to the other nominees and recommended list of games, too. Just last weekend my friends Davebo and Jeff were visiting. Along with some other local gamers we played a lot of great titles, but guess what was on the table, pulled from my collection: Luxor and Imhotep, two fantastic nominees that were merely overshadowed by the steamroller winners those years (Azul and Codenames, respectively). The titles nominated for Spiel des Jahres are Captain Flip, In the Footsteps of Darwin, and Sky Team. In addition to these nominations, the SdJ jury recommended the following six titles: Harmonies, Passt nicht!, Phantom Ink, Schätz it if you can, Trekking Through History, and Trio. Then for the Kenners the nominees went to Daybreak, The Guild of Merchant Explorers, and Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West. Plus the recommended list: Bier Pioniere, Botanicus, Forest Shuffle, and Ritual. I think it's July 21 when we'll hear which games are the ultimate winners, but do take a look at the other nominees and recommended games. There's a good chance you'll enjoy those games, too, maybe even more than the winner. -Mark

In this episode, I take you on a tour of lost Maya cities and to the discovery of the main aspects of their civilization: history, culture, architecture, art, religion, astronomy, society… We will visit sites like Nakbe, El Mirador, Tikal, or Chichen Itza and try to understand how ancient Maya cities thrived in Mesoamerica before and during the First Millenium, before they suffered catastrophic urban collapse and went almost forgotten for centuries. You are probably familiar with several of the great pre-Columbian cities in the Americas. Places like Tikal in Guatemala, Copan in Honduras, and Tenochtitlan in Mexico are some of the great legacies of the civilizations that came before. However, all of these population centers were located in Mesoamerican. Most of the people who lived in what is today the United States and Canada were nomadic and never built any large cities. However, there was one major exception. Learn more about Cahokia, the largest pre-Columbian settlement in North America, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-belize-and-guatemala/ Hear about travel to Belize and Guatemala on the G Adventures "Classic Belize and Tikal" week-long small group tour: Mayan pyramids, cave tubing, and snorkeling on the Barrier Reef. An adventurous trip to Belize and Guatemala. The tour started in Belize City, traveled to Flores in Guatemala, and then returned to San Ignacio Belize and the Island of Caye Caulker. One of the highlights was visiting Mayan ruins, including Yaxha and Tikal in Guatemala and Caracol in Belize. I climbed to the top of 4 pyramids in 3 sites while learning about the Mayan Classical age from 200 to 900 AD. We saw Mayan ballcourts, temples, and noble houses. These sites are all in the jungle with the sounds of howler monkeys in the background and spider monkeys and kudamundi wandering the grounds. We saw tucans, turkeys, and other birds. We stayed in the colorful island town of Flores Guatemala which is a center for tourism for Tikal. We did cave tubing in Belize "near" San Ignacio, Belize. We floated through caves on inner tubes. We could get out of the tubes in the cave and see artifacts left by the Mayans of the Classical Period. Some of the group went to the well-known ATM cave where there are still the remains of some who were sacrificed to the gods at the end of the Classical Period. Others visited the Raptor Center where they got to interact with birds of prey. The trip concluded on Caye Caulker, an island in the Caribbean Sea, where our group went snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef, encountering diverse marine life including dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, rays, and sharks. We toured the island with local high school students as part of Bikes with Purpose. We concluded our trip with a lazy sunset cruise. This was an adventurous tour. It is meant for people who are open to taking a crowded local bus, jumping into the water in a dark cave, and following a guide through the jungle canopy at a Mayan site. If you are such a person, the G Adventures "Classic Belize and Tikal" might be a great use of a week's vacation.
The Maya appeared in Yucatan seemingly out of nowhere in 3100 BC. But recent underwater artefacts tell a different story: a culture was already established there six thousand years earlier.According to the sacred book Chilam Balam, the ancestors of the Maya arrived in 9600 BC from a large island to the east called Atl when “the waters swallowed the source of wisdom”. A catastrophe destroyed their home, forcing the divine survivors to sail west. Described as People of the Serpent, they were led by the god-man Itzamna who brought the knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, agriculture, architecture and mystical practices, thus explaining how the Maya inherited a fully developed civilization and cosmology. What's astonishing is that hardly anyone has heard of Itzamna or his sages, the Itz — water wizards — people with knowledge of the laws of nature and how to bend them. This is their story, how their progeny became known as Maya, and how the temples of Yucatan and Guatemala today are the final expression of a project 9000 years in the making. Filmed in Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Palenque, Tikal and many other locations, this documentary also explores the elements and purpose behind each temple.Freddy Silva is a bestselling author, and leading researcher of ancient civilizations, restricted history, sacred sites and their interaction with consciousness. He has published seven books in six languages, and produced fourteen documentaries.Described by one CEO as "perhaps the best metaphysical speaker in the world right now," for two decades he has been an international keynote speaker, in addition to appearances on Gaia TV, History Channel, BBC, numerous radio shows and podcasts.https://vimeo.com/ondemand/mysteryofthemaya?fbclid=IwAR1hE6Y9rrF71eN1MoSo12YcEzMG2Fyh2oHev7vW4KgxN68wNy__zQCDpIEhttps://invisibletemple.com/?fbclid=IwAR0PJJimom3WmUjhRwfSJZsBh8fSQFGSZ6GguT-DluECdQAuj3Al8zA41WMThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2790919/advertisement

Today we cover what we can in terms of Mayan political history. The Maya organized themselves into essentially what we might call city-states. These centered around some locations you might recognize like Chichen Itza and Tikal, and many more you will not recognize. Sadly, much of Mayan history is lost to us as much of the written record did not survive the centuries. But, I'll give you what I can.Website: www.westerncivpodcast.comPatreon: www.pateon.com/westerncivpodcastWestern Civ 2.0 Free Trial: www.glow.fm/westernciv
