The first two weeks of spring training are in the books, and the Detroit Tigers are off to an undefeated start with a 2-0 record in the Grapefruit League. As roster battles heat up, key storylines emerge, including Jace Jung’s push for the third base job, Trey Sweeney’s situation at shortstop, and Justyn-Henry Malloy’s power bat. The Tigers are hoping Jung can lock down third base for the 2025 Opening Day roster, but will his spring performance be enough to secure the spot? Bobby Scales, the Tigers’ radio analyst, joins the "Days of Roar" podcast to discuss his experience reporting to spring training both as a player and as an executive. He shares his insights on the offseason additions, Jung’s opportunity to win the job at third base, the expectations for young players, and how to assess spring training performances. With Alex Cobb’s injury creating an opening in the starting rotation, a Kenta Maeda vs. Casey Mize competition for the fifth spot is underway. What have we learned about Kenta Maeda’s early camp performance? Plus, updates on Colt Keith and Justyn-Henry Malloy at first base, thoughts on the automated ball-strike challenge system, and when we can expect Javier Báez to make his spring debut. Evan and Mark are still waiting for the Detroit Tigers to make their first moves of the 2024-25 offseason. We break down Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki with help from Marquee Sports Network player development analyst Lance Brozdowski, who explains Sasaki's pitch mix and reveals if the Tigers have a chance to sign him. After that, Evan and Mark share how the Tigers can benefit in the short term and long term from signing another pitcher to a one-year contract, such as Walker Buehler or Frankie Montas. Ben Verlander, an analyst for FOX Sports and the brother of Justin Verlander, joins the podcast to talk about the Jack Flaherty trade, watching the Tigers advance to the postseason, hitting a home run off his brother in 2016 spring training and much more. To wrap up, Evan and Mark discuss a potential Javier Báez-Trey Sweeney platoon at shortstop and the prospects the Tigers could protect from the Rule 5 draft. Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. Segment 1 – News and Notes1.The Rays will play their 2024 home games at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. It's hard to say exactly what the hitting and pitching effects will be, but Steinbrenner Field has always benefited offense.a.Will you make draft changes on Rays players based on this information?b.Not to be outdone, the Orioles announced they would move back the left field fences (after cutting the big hole). It should benefit right-handed power.c.Back to Tampa, apparently, their new stadium deal is off – again. I have no idea what this means, but a potential move out of the Tampa/St. Pete area is back on the table.2.Wander Franco got into more trouble. I'm no attorney, but those holding Franco in Dynasty Leagues…it's pass time to give up on him. It would take a miracle to see him play in MLB again.3.Award Predictionsa.AL ROY – Colton Cowser, Luis Gil, and Austin Wellsb.NL ROY – Jackson Chourio, Paul Skenes, and Jackson Merrillc.AL CY Young – Emmanuel Clase, Seth Lugo, and Tarik Skubald.NL CY Young – Chris Sale, Paul Skenes and Zack Wheeler e.AL MVP – Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., and Juan Sotof.NL MVP – Francisco Lindor, Ketel Marte, and Shohei OhtaniSegment 2 – Fantasy Baseball Questions of the AL Central 1.Detroit Tigersa.Spencer Torkelson is being drafted as the 20th first baseman off the board – after Michael Busch and before Nate Lowe. Are you as high on him at this draft slot as you were last season?b.Javier Baez – over/under 400 ABsi.If a lot less, will they acquire someone or give the job to Trey Sweeney?c.Parker Meadows was my dark horse for AL ROY. Was I a year early?i.2025 stat line: AB, HR, SB, BAd.Jackson Jobe's current ADP is 95. I thought it would be higher. Interested:i.2025 stat line: IP, K's, ERAe.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)2.Kansas City Royalsa.Vinnie P. had a nice step-up year in 2024, with 19 home runs and a .264 batting average. He is currently the 12th first baseman off the board. Is that too high, or do you like the spot?i.Over/Under – 25 home runsb.Maikel Garcia did not have the power upswing I thought he would have, and his .281 OBP is problematic. He is going as the 17th third baseman off the board. Is there growth here, or is he just a light-hitting 3B/2B with speed?i.He still hits the ball hard, but there just isn't any leverage with a 49.5% ground ball rate.c.Seth Lugo will get CY Young votes, but nobody is buying it, as his current ADP is 167 (69th pitcher off the board—52nd starter). Would you take him as your number three starter?d.Kyle Wright missed the entire 2024 with shoulder surgery. I haven't seen much of an update, but he's nearly free in drafts (665). Is it worth a gamble in a Draft and Hold League?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)3.Minnesota Twinsa. The Twins team's talent is excellent. However, it's a problem when your top three players are Buxton, Correa, and Lewis, all of whom can't stay healthy. Do the Twins try to move one or two of them, or cross their fingers and hope they defy the odds and stay healthy?b.2025 stat line for Carlos Correa – AB, HR, BAc.Is Brooks Lee ready for a growth year?i.2025 stat line – AB, HR, SB, and BAii.His current ADP is 431, and while he's only SS eligible on the NFBC, that would make him the 35th-second baseman of the board. Interested?d.Joe Ryan's current ADP is 101. He is the 41st pitcher (30th starter). Would you rather have him as a #2 or #3 starter?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)Final Questions1.Who wins the AL Central2.Three teams made it to the playoffs in 2024; how many do you see making it in 2025?

The Detroit Tigers beat up the White Sox in Chicago as part of a seven-game road trip to the Windy City against the Cubs and White Sox. Are the White Sox the worst team we've ever seen? It's quite possible. More importantly, can the Tigers exceed a .500 record in the 2024 season? The lineup features three new regular players in Dillon Dingler, Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney. How do those newcomers fit with mainstays like Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith? Also, is Spencer Torkelson ever going to stay hot? After the break, Nick Pollack, the founder of PitcherList, joins the Days of Roar podcast to discuss the Cy Young-caliber season of Tarik Skubal, who ranks first in ERA (2.58), first in wins (15) and tied for first in strikeouts (193) among MLB pitchers. His best pitch is the changeup, but it's a seam-shifted wake changeup. Pollack explains exactly what that is. He also discusses other topics about the Tigers' pitching department, including Keider Montero, Reese Olson, Casey Mize, Matt Manning and players to target in upcoming free agency. To wrap up, we discuss the MLB debut of Ty Madden and if injured shortstop Javier Báez has played his final game with the Tigers. Follow Mark on X/Twitter here. Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. The New York Yankees officially introduced their newest All-Star outfielder, Juan Soto, in a Zoom press conference that aired on YES. Stacey and Steve discuss how funny that is (because of the times we're living in) and look at some clips from the press conference, and react to what Soto had to say about a possible extension, not changing his approach and his energy. Then, the Yankees traded Trey Sweeney to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Stacey and Steve discussed the move and whether it was good for the Yankees. And finally, Stacey and Steve share their thoughts on how the offseason is going so far around baseball, including wondering about the recent moves the Kansas City Royals have made. Locked On Dodgers – Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers made a flurry of moves on Monday starting with a trade with the Yankees to free up space for the official signings of Joe Kelly and Shohei Ohtani. In the trade, the Dodgers sent Victor González and Jorbit Vivas to New York for prospect Trey Sweeney. The biggest news came from Ohtani's side though as it's been reported that he is deferring $68M of the $70M a year he was set to make. This is huge for Dodgers' payroll but also for luxury tax purposes. It also helps Ohtani a bit in the long run. Kelly's signing was also made official and his family announced that he will wear No. 99 in 2024. The LAD needed to clear a few 40-man roster spots and the NYY were able to accommodate them with this deal. New York's #2 Sports Show is an Influencer Audio production Music provided by Stephen Dillaro: https://soundcloud.com/stephendillaro
The New York Yankees traded Jordan Montgomery for Harrison Bader in 2022, and now Montgomery is pitching well in the playoffs for the Texas Rangers. Could he reunite with the Yankees? That's one of our Fanmail Friday questions for this week. Stacey and Steve also discuss a possible Kim Ng-Yankees reunion, whether or not the Yankees have shifted their focus, i.e., player development, and Trey Sweeney's future role with the team. Plus, do any front offices use analytics as an excuse for why trades don't work out, and Stacey and Steve give their picks for breakout player in 2024. Then they talk about NLCS Game Three between the Diamondbacks and Phillies, which was one of the more exciting pitching duels so far in the playoffs and one of the more exciting endings so far in the playoffs, with the Diamondbacks walking off and winning a game at home to prevent the Phillies from going up 3-0 in the series. Amidst his June heroics, Trey Sweeney joins Steven Cusumano and Eli Fishman to discuss his thoughts on the Somerset Patriots' 2023 playoff push, after the Patriots clinched the First Half Championship for a second consecutive season.
The New York Yankees are in a strange place with just over 40 days until the trade deadline. Should they sell, or should they buy? We go through both scenarios and name possible targets like Lucas Giolito, Jack Flaherty, Jordan Montgomery, Marcus Stroman, Cody Bellinger, Randal Grichuk, and Brent Rooker. And who could go? That depends on their philosophy. Could we see Oswaldo Peraza somewhere or someone like Will Warren or Trey Sweeney? And if the Yankees are sellers, could they part with guys like Wandy Peralta, Clay Holmes, or even Gleyber Torres or Harrison Bader? Plus, Josh Donaldson ponders retirement after the 2023 season. What is his legacy? And the Yankees are welcoming the Seattle Mariners to the Bronx for a three-game set which means it's time for hot, cold, and heating up. Cold won't surprise you. Hot shouldn't either. Then we go through the pitching matchups in the series with Seattle. The New York Yankees were swept by the Boston Red Sox this weekend. They dropped Friday's game, 15-5, and after the rainout on Saturday, they were swept in a doubleheader, 6-2 and 4-1 respectively. We recap the weekend set and wonder if there is any hope for this team while Aaron Judge is out (for how long? Who knows at this point). The pitching, the hitting and the defense were all bad and the bullpen took a hit this weekend as well. And it's Minors Monday! We focus on Trey Sweeney, one of the Yankees many shortstops and look at how he did for Somerset. Plus, TJ Rumfield, an unranked player who also plays for the Patriots had a heck of a week. And then we discuss Estevan Florial and Oswald Peraza and their places in the organization. Is it time to call them up? Can the Yankees even do that with the logjam of players on the Major League roster? We discuss it. And finally, we have a big announcement in Segment 3 so make sure you stick around for that. On the latest episode of From The Back Fields to The Bronx, Ricky Keeler is joined by Tampa Tarpons beat writer John Brophy to talk about the first full week of the 2022 season for all four of the New York Yankees full-season affiliates. First up, John talks about the Tarpons having success on the mound with their pitching and he discusses what has stood out to him about the way Rachel Balkovec manages the Tarpons and connects with her players. Then, he discusses the improvements he is seeing in Anthony Garcia's plate discipline after conducting an interview with him earlier this week. When the conversation shifts to Somerset, Ricky and John talk about whether or not to be concerned about Anthony Volpe's slow start, the talent the rotation has led by Ken Waldichuk, and the team's high strikeout totals to begin the year. Scranton Wilkes-Barre had a rough week in Norfolk and Ricky thinks there should be some concern with the way Luis Gil and Deivi Garcia have struggled to begin the year. Finally, the duo looks at Hudson Valley's lineup and how even without Trey Sweeney at the moment, the Renegades may have the deepest lineup in the system. After talking about their position groups to watch this year, Ricky and John talk about the pitch clock that has helped decrease how long the games are going and whether or not it is a good or bad thing for the sport.
MLB might be in a lockout, but minor league camps are still going on. On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, co-managing editor Ricky Keeler takes a closer look at the only Yankees affiliate to make their league's championship series and that is the Tampa Tarpons in the Low-A Southeast. On Tuesday night, the Tarpons will begin a best-of-five series against the Bradenton Marauders (Pittsburgh Pirates). Games 1 and 2 will be in Bradenton and Tampa will host Games 3-5 since they finished with the best record (73-43). To help preview the championship series, Ricky was joined by Spenser Smith, the play-by-play announcer for the Bradenton Marauders. Spenser discussed some of the recent additions to the Pirates system from offseason trades the big league club made, what their pitching rotation could look like in this upcoming series, and whether Pirates fans should be optimistic about the direction of the team considering the success their lower levels of the farm system had this season. Plus, Spenser gave his thoughts on some of the prospects that have stood out to him on the Tarpons which include Trey Sweeney, Anthony Garcia, and Blas Castano just to name a few. Of course, we did ask him to give his thoughts on Jasson Dominguez as well. Be on the lookout for a more extensive preview of the series tomorrow put together by our Tampa Tarpons beat writer, John Brophy.

A quick look at some of the Yankees top prospects, including Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, Everson Pereira, Ken Waldichuk, Austin Wells, Trey Sweeney and Oswald Peraza.
On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, managing editors Ricky Keeler and Matt Kardos discussed all four affiliates as they all have only a few weeks left in their respective seasons. The conversation started with Double-A Somerset as TD Bank Ballpark has been cleared for play after the devastation of Hurricane Ida. The Patriots will return home Friday pushing for a postseason bid. Matt gives insight on Luis Medina finding his command on the mound, Isiah Gilliam finding his form in the outfield, and some of the new faces that have been on the mound for the Patriots. When talking about the other three affiliates, Ricky and Matt went over Hudson Valley's power surge in the month of September, Tampa clinching a postseason bid with the help of Trey Sweeney and Anthony Garcia, and how Michael King and Adam Warren could maybe help the Yankees down the stretch with their success recently at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Next, the conversation shifted to how teams approach the final weeks of the season. Is it still solely about development when a postseason spot is on the line or are the playoffs an afterthought considering the long offseason these players have had? The duo also dives into a scenario if Hudson Valley misses the playoffs, should Somerset call up Anthony Volpe (25 home runs this year) and have Oswald Peraza go up to Triple-A for the final two weeks of their season?

On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, Pinstriped Prospects managing editor Ricky Keeler is joined by Tampa Tarpons beat writer John Brophy to discuss how all four Yankees affiliates are either going for a division title or fighting for a spot in their league's championship series. Of course, all of our thoughts are with everyone dealing with the effects from Hurricane Ida and this includes the players for Double-A Somerset. If you feel inclined to help the players out, here is how you can do it: https://twitter.com/adoptmilbplayer/status/1433748112242270212 The conversation starts with the Tarpons playing in Bradenton this week in a championship preview. How have the Yankees top draft picks from this past July looked with Tampa so far such as Trey Sweeney and Cooper Bowman? Plus, John discusses Anthony Garcia's power surge, Antonio Gomez's development behind the plate, and what the Tarpons pitching rotation looks like after a lot of promotions have shaken it up. When looking at the other affiliates, the duo discusses Randy Vasquez's Double-A debut in Somerset, Beck Way's debut at High-A Hudson Valley, Jake Sanford having an under-the-radar year for the Renegades in the outfield, and JP Sears making a good impression in the Triple-A rotation. In terms of general minor league topics, Ricky and John go over which prospects they would have liked to see make their big-league debut if 40 players were still allowed to be on the major league roster in September, how they approach covering rehab assignments, and the six-game series format carrying over into next year.

After discussing the Andrew Heaney trade with the Angels for Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero and who it benefits in the organization, the two of them discuss how the Low-A Tampa Tarpons roster looks different with a lot of the 2021 MLB Draft picks playing on the team such as 1st Round pick Trey Sweeney and 4th Round pick Cooper Bowman. Who is John most excited to cover and we look at a decision to promote Sweeney over Alexander Vargas (currently on FCL). With the Tarpons getting the draft picks, player such as Austin Wells, Everson Pereira, and Andres Chaparro, and Matt Sauer are up at High-A Hudson Valley. With Josh Breaux now at Double-A Somerset, the two of them discuss the potential split playing time at High-A behind the plate with Wells and Anthony Seigler among other topics. After discussing the rehab assignments of Clarke Schmidt and Luis Severino, the duo talks about Luis Gil's major league debut and John gives an update as to how he thinks Jasson Dominguez is doing in Tampa.

On this week's episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, managing editor Ricky Keeler is joined by Hudson Valley Renegades beat writer/head scout Steve Alhona to recap how the New York Yankees did in the 2021 MLB Draft. First off, we at Pinstriped Prospects want to thank all of you for reading our draft coverage. We pride ourselves at doing great work with the draft, so thank you. The duo began the show discussing first round pick Trey Sweeney. Was it the right pick for the Yankees considering who was still on the board, can he stick at shortstop long-term, and what does that mean for the logjam of shortstops in the organization? After that, they got into Round 2 pick, Stanford right-hander Brendan Beck. How close is he to reaching the big leagues and what stands out about the Pac-12 ace in terms of not having a dominant pitch, but four good pitches. In Round 3, the Yankees took a prep pitcher in right-hander Brock Salvidge and Ricky and Steve give their thoughts on the upside he has. The two of them then dive into their favorite Day 2 and Day 3 picks and later go into which teams besides the Yankees had good drafts in their opinion. Plus, the Angels took 20 pitchers with their pick. Is it a good or bad strategy to take all pitchers even with an organizational need at the position? Ricky and Steve wrap up the show by briefly going over the latest promotions (recorded before Trey Amburgey was called up to The Bronx). This includes Jasson Dominguez going to Low-A Tampa, Anthony Volpe, Jake Sanford, and Pat DeMarco going to High-A Hudson Valley, Brandon Lockridge to Double-A Somerset, and Glenn Otto to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
The last time Andrew and Kunj podcasted, the first half was essentially over, as half of the Yankees' season had already been played. Well, now we're beyond the math, as the All-Star break and MLB Draft are both behind us. The Yankees officially kick off the second half on Thursday night against the Red Sox, and they still have so much to prove. The Yankees technically ended the first half on a high note with a 4-2 road trip through Seattle and Houston, but once again in a recurring theme of the 2021 season, they entered the finales with a chance to sweep and failed to do so. The second loss was particularly galling, as the Yankees blew a five-run lead in the ninth behind the bizarrely bad Chad Green, who has been otherwise-excellent. There have been some encouraging signs, as the Yankees' offense has looked a lot better since the start of June and Gerrit Cole looked absolutely filthy in his 1-0 Saturday shutout. But there's a long way to go. Andrew and Kunj also touched on Yankees injury updates, their first-round draft selection of Trey Sweeney, and used the "Meet a Baby Bomber" segment to meet two new draft picks: second-rounder Brendan Beck and sixth-rounder Richard Fitts. Then they wrap it up with the Yankee/Mitre of the Week and some scattered Home Run Derby thoughts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In this episode, Derek riffs on Trey Sweeney, the Yankees top draft pick in the 2021 draft, and reflects on prospects and draft picks of the past.
With day one of the MLB Draft done, the Yankees draft shortstop Trey Sweeney with the 20th overall pick. However, the greater importance of the draft right now is that teams start talking about bog trades, and with the Yankees playing better, they very well could be buyers. Through this week's injury news, Ryan leads Jose and Brian to talk about the possible prospects that can be traded for some MLB-ready players to help the team win this season.
Lon and Derek discuss what Tim Anderson brings to the table as the new Illini assistant basketball coach. Later, Jason Anderson, EIU's baseball coach, joins the guys to talk about Trey Sweeney being drafted in the 1st round.
On this special episode of the From The Back Fields to The Bronx podcast, we get you set for the 2021 MLB Draft that begins tonight in Denver, Colorado. The Yankees will have the 20th pick and they do not pick that high in the draft usually, so it should make for an entertaining night. Managing editor Ricky Keeler and Hudson Valley Renegades beat writer/head scout Steve Alhona are your co-hosts for this show. They begin the episode by talking about the excitement over the 20th pick, the uncertainty of who they might take, and what are the organizational needs/positions they should address heading into this three-day process. After going over some of the prep school options, you will hear an encore presentation of our interview with Nathan Rode, the director of multimedia and scouting for Prep Baseball Report. Nathan gives his thoughts on the prep class, some options for the Yankees such as right-handers Andrew Painter and Chase Petty, left-hander Anthony Solometo, and outfielder Benny Montgomery among others. Then, the conversation shifts to the college class. Ricky and Steve debate whether the progress Clarke Schmidt has made should cause the Yankees to decide whether or not to pick Mississippi right-hander Gunnar Hoglund if he is on the board in Round 1. They go over names such as right-handers Gavin Williams and Will Bednar and Eastern Illinois infielder Trey Sweeney. The second interview will you hear is Ricky's conversation with Joe Doyle, the head of MLB Draft content for Prospects Live. Joe dives into what the Yankees might do in Round 1, some options in Round 2 as well, and we look at how the Yankees organization is viewed externally. Finally, Ricky and Steve give their Round 1 predictions, what defines a successful draft, and their non-Yankees storylines to watch.
