Luke is mad about this one, folks, calling it “one of the worst adaptations” they have ever covered. Laura from the “Why the Book Wins” podcast and YouTube channel joins the show to talk about this movie she'd never seen in this final installment of Peter Jackson's overstuffed Hobbit trilogy adapting the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. In episode 245, Luke, James, and Laura wonder why Tauriel doesn't seem to care about anything but Kili, judge the value of more Lord of the Rings references, learn the tragic backstory of a CGI dwarf, explore the potentials of a rated-R extended edition, and finally cast their votes on which was better: the book or the movies! Richard joins Fr. Andrew to read chapter 9 of The Hobbit, “Barrels Out of Bond.” We meet the Elvenking, learn about the Wood Elves' fondness for wine, and Bilbo does what it takes to acquire his great title of “Barrel Rider.” Also, there is no Tauriel. Not even a little bit. And where is Legolas? No idea.

Τα πάντα γύρω από το Lord of the Rings Το One Pod to Rule Them All συνεχίζεται! Σειρά έχει η πολύπαθη τριλογία των Hobbit, ένα στο περίπου prequel του Lord of the Rings, και όλα όσα της έδωσαν τη μορφή που πήρε στους κινηματογράφους.Μετά τα Lord of the Rings, το POP για τις Δύσκολες Ώρες ξαναβλέπει τις τρεις ταινίες του Peter Jackson και, προσπαθώντας να τις αντιμετωπίσει δίκαια, αναρωτιέται αν η ρίζα του προβλήματος ήταν ακριβώς η απόπειρα να μετατραπεί η ιστορία σε prequel της μεγαλύτερης κινηματογραφικής τριλογίας όλων των εποχών.Ποια πραγματικά γεγονότα ενέπνευσαν τον Tolkien σε σχέση με το ταξίδι των Νάνων ως το Erebor; Ποιες είναι οι διαφοροποιήσεις μεταξύ της πρώτης έκδοσης του Hobbit σε σχέση με τη δεύτερη εκδοχή που προέκυψε μετά τη συγγραφή του Lord of the Rings από τον Tolkien, και πώς αυτές μοιάζουν κατά κάποιον τρόπο με τον αναθεωρητισμό της Warner Bros. και του σωματείου ηθοποιών της Νέας Ζηλανδίας και τι ορίζει το διαβόητο “Hobbit Law” που θεσπίστηκε και ταλαιπωρεί ακόμα τους ηθοποιούς της χώρας; Γιατί οι ταινίες λειτουργούν καλύτερα ως ταινίες φαντασίας και όχι ως ταινίες Lord of the Rings, πόσο αξέχαστη είναι ακόμα η αρχική εισαγωγή των Νάνων στο Unexpected Journey, και γιατί είναι η σχέση τους με τον Bilbo που δίνει παλμό στις ταινίες όταν της δίνεται έμφαση; Τι πήγε σωστά και τι λάθος με την Tauriel, τι ευχαριστιόμαστε πολύ σε κάθε ταινία, γιατί έκλαιγε ο Ian McKellen στα γυρίσματα και γιατί προτείνουμε το extended edition του Battle of Five Armies;Επίσης τι επαναδόμηση θα κάναμε στην υπάρχουσα τριλογία, πόσο φανταστικά πέρασε έρποντας ο Benedict Cumberbatch, τι δουλειά έχει η Saoirse Ronan στον ρόλο του Thranduil, και πόσο swag μπορεί να έχει ο αξιολάτρευτος Bombur. Α και βασικά, I have a wee proposition, if you don't mind giving me a few moments of your time. Would you consider... JUST SODDING OFF!

In this episode Andrew and Don discuss the Silver Medalist's, the Mid-Tier heroes of MESBG. Rather than taking an analytical approach to the topic they discuss six popular heroes in this bracket: Tauriel, Balin the Dwarf, King of Moria, Cirdan, The Shade, The Spider Queen and Gorulf Ironskin In their other usual segments they give their thoughts on what we may see in the next edition of the MESGB rule set, how they go about building an army list and Andrew navigates through a little MESBG word association. Finally they revisit their narrative segment where they follow the adventures of Garthur the Dwarf Ranger and the mysterious nameless woman he's traveling with.

Discussion of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies [Extended Edition] Join Maggie and Cam for two hours of praising Martin Freeman. This episode explores Peter Jackson’s final Middle-earth movie and its unexpectedly strong acts of interpretation. We discuss the fascinating deviations of tone, scope, and character in this film, including Gandalf’s knowledge of Bilbo’s Ring, the surreal representation of Thorin’s inner turmoil, and Tauriel’s contagious love story. Dwarves finally get some real character development in this version of the story, and Maggie suggests that Bilbo’s big moment is different here. Cam offers theories about bridges, both literal and narrative, and the importance of legacy to Tolkien’s villains. We also celebrate the goats, sheep, pigs, and moose-deer-elk in this glorious film. And Bofur comes back. During our Second Breakfast, Maggie asks some provocative questions about emotional manipulation, artistic intent, and creative responsibility – inspired by A Little Life, This Is Us, and The Haunting of Hill House.

Who are the most favourite characters in the show? Gandalf? Frodo? Legolas? Aragorn? Sam? What is up with Onna's staunch belief in British actors? Why does Bob endorse Arwen? Beauty and the Bitch are taking on part three of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" series. Will they be more bitchy than before? Will "The Hobbit" movies continue to be unneccarily long? What happened to Smaug? Can we hold our own attention? If anyone can do it, Beauty and the Bitch can! We continue on our path of jokes at the expense of Benedict Cumberswizzle, we mourn Smaug, we salute Martin Freeman (and his Bilbo), and we complain about everything. The Nicks discuss the consequences of sleeping, mid-day naps, getting lost in the fog, being ambushed by wights, running naked in the sun, singing about "old Fatty Lumpkin", and the history of Angmar and the small Kingdoms of former Arnor. Maps Map of Middle-earth LoTRproject.com interactive map - Caution: spoilers for new readers! Map of the Small Kingdoms of former Arnor Notes for this episode What Happened Last Time?: The Hobbits have found possibly the strangest thing in Middle-earth in the form of Tom Bombadil. “Master”, “eldest”, “he is as you see him” are just some of the terms used to describe the who and what of good ol’ Tom. Through song and tale he weaves his knowledge and divulges the hearts and goings on of the trees and other fantastic beasts in the Old Forest, and he even knows a thing or two about the Ring, though it curiously doesn’t seem to affect him very much, if at all. Now the Hobbits, are laid to rest before venturing forth from the house of Tom Bombadil back toward the road, and then toward Rivendell. The Story in this Chapter: Waking Leave taking Goldberry is calling after them! A view of the road - but not really An unexpected nap Fog on the Barrow-downs “Follow me!”... “Where are you guys?” Atop the Barrow Within the Barrow Garbed in white, with circlets, and rings A sword lay across their necks A SEVERED ARM crawls toward them like a macabre spider Calling out to Tom Bombadil Frodo finds his voice again. Running in the sun to shake off the darkness Fatty Lumpkin - Tom’s pony! On the road to Bree. Other comments or observations: Angmar! Carn Dum! Nick Andrew LOVES THESE PLACES!! Referenced in the Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies as the reason Bolg travels north and Tauriel and Legolas follow him -- the threat of a resurrected Angmar is too much to ignore! LotRO Players who completed the first major story arc of the game's narrative got to know Angmar extremely well. Most of you even got to play through a raid into Carn Dum itself. Speaking of Carn Dum, it's an oddity in the world of Middle-earth as we don’t exactly know what that name means… we can assume it is a compound of Elvish and Dwarvish, in which case it means “the Red Halls.” Creepy, eh? Angmar was founded in midway point through the third age of ME with a singular purpose… DESTROY any and all remnant of the North that brought about Sauron’s demise at the War of the Last Alliance. Witch-king!!!!!! Notable Difference(s) from Films: We get a small shot of the fog-laden Barrow-downs as one of the Nazgul looks over it atop his horse. Locations/Distance Traveled/Distance apart: East of the HoTB - up into the Barrow-downs, then northward toward the main road leading into the village of Bree. New Characters: The barrow wight Info/History from Other Titles/Sources: Lots of information about Carn Dum and Angmar in Tolkien’s various other published works. Three key themes are considered in the context of how they will follow through into The Hobbit: There and Back Again: 1) Dark versus Light; 2) Tauriel and Legolas and how they represent the Elvish portion of the story; and 3) Return of the King, Erebor style.

Class Z(ed): Bits and bites on professional development, including learning about assessment, perception, and camaraderie at Academic Librarians in Public Service; getting experience running the Cool Tools Unconference; our jobs this term; and our final library school courses.
