This week on Seasoned, we're talking with people connected to our state's libraries who mix their work with a passion for food, drink and community. The downtown branch of the Hartford Public Library may be closed for renovations, but that hasn't stopped Andréa Hawkins and Doug Barber from opening up a coffee shop on the light-filled first floor of the library. They talk with us about how the shop fosters community. And, pairing wine with cheese and charcuterie is too obvious. What wine might pair with Virginia Woolf's Orlando? How about Madame Bovary or Anna Karenina? Shannon Barillari, of the Russell Library in Middletown, talks with us about how she pairs wine with books. Plus, how does Youth Services Librarian Kristen Slepecki get kids excited about the library's Teen Test Kitchen program? "I bribe them with food," she says. "Sugary treats are, for sure, the way to go." We talk with Kristen and Christine Michaud, the Durham Library's director, about the intrinsic value of the library's Cookbook Club, which is part book discussion, part pot luck. Also, some city and town libraries in our state have what's called a Library of Things. Home cooks, ask your librarian if you can borrow a Barbie cake pan, cookie cutters, an air fryer, rice cooker or pizza oven! Bridget Quinn, President and CEO and Head Librarian at the Hartford Public Library describes the awesomeness of the Library of Things. GUESTS: Andréa Hawkins and Doug Barber: Co-owners of Berkins on Main, the coffee shop on the first floor of the Hartford Public Library. They also own Berkins Blend Cafe in Glastonbury, Conn. Shannon Barillari: Head of Digital and Emerging Technologies, Russell Library, Middletown, Conn. Christine Michaud: Director of the Durham Public Library and the leader of the library's Cookbook Club. Kristen Slepecki: Youth Services and Teen Librarian at the Durham Public Library. She runs the Teen Test Kitchen program, where teenagers participate in fun taste tests and make edible experiments. Bridget Quinn: President and CEO, and Head Librarian, of the Hartford Public Library. Interested in the book and wine pairings Shannon Barallari suggests? In this episode, Chris sat down with Mike Buono an Adult and Teen Services Librarian and Michele Cayea a Teen Services Librarian from the Patchogue Medford Library and Stacey Sansone, a Teen Services Librarian from the Sachem Public Library. This was an eye opener because the discussion went beyond what librarians learn in the classroom setting when working towards their MLS degree. There is so much that goes into being a Teen/YA Librarian. Our guests really tell it like it is on what it is like to be a Teen Librarian on Long Island. Our guests share some incredible experiences and valuable resources in this episode.

We're celebrating School Library Month with three of the most dedicated librarians we know. John Schumacher (the famous “Mr. Schu”) and Scholastic librarian Deimosa Webber-Bey talk with us about why they became librarians, the crucial task of finding the right book for a child, and why—as John describes it—the library is “the heart and soul of a school." Kristina Holzweiss, the 2015 School Library Journal School Librarian of the Year, also joins us to share her thoughts on why libraries matter. Guests: John Schumacher (aka Mr. Schu) is a blogger, a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University, and the Ambassador of School Libraries for Scholastic Book Fairs. Before joining Scholastic, he was a teacher-librarian at Brook Forest Elementary School in Oak Brook, Illinois. In 2011, Library Journal named John "The Xtreme Librarian” for the "gears and stunts" he uses to get kids reading. Teacher Magazine named him a “Cool Teacher” in 2014 for redefining what it means to be a teacher-librarian. John served on the 2014 Newbery Committee. You can find him blogging at www.MrSchuReads.com or tweeting @MrSchuReads.  Deimosa Webber-Bey is the Library Manager at Scholastic and responsible for the corporate archive, readers advisory, cataloging, and the employee book club. A Dartmouth alum and native of New York City, she was in Cohort 5 of the NYC Teaching Fellows, and taught for several years in public schools in Queens, Brooklyn, Albuquerque, and the Pueblo of Jemez. Deimosa also worked as the Teen Librarian at the Rio Rancho Public Library. She has published in YALS ("Noise @ Your Library", 2008) and The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy ("Runaway Quilt Project", 2014). The oldest of six children and a life-long vegetarian, she enjoys reading, writing, hip hop, comics, and quilting. Follow Deimosa on the Scholastic On Our Minds blog and on Twitter (@dataquilter). Kristina Holzweiss is a librarian at Bay Shore Middle School (BSMS) in Long Island, New York. She was named School Library Journal's 2015 School Librarian of the Year. The award “honors a K–12 library professional for outstanding achievement and the exemplary use of 21st-century tools and services to engage children and teens toward fostering multiple literacies.” While she did not particularly enjoy attending middle school, Kristina loves being a middle school librarian. Teens who want to write have been engaging in their own writing group at Bainbridge Public Library. Local writers Margaret Nevinski and Barbara Clarke have been mentoring students in grades 7-12 on a weekly drop-in basis. The last gathering is May 19th, after school, at 2:00pm. These two local writers, and Teen Librarian Stefanie Graen, have met weekly with interested students in the community room. For teen writers who want to continue to explore their writing, the same two teachers will offer a Teen Writing Camp, July 14-17, at Bainbridge Library.  Space is limited, sign up starts June 2nd at the Library or via email to Teen Librarian sgraen@krl.org. For ages 12-18. Also see: www.fieldsend.org When asked how she benefits from the weekly teen writing group, Margaret said: "Teens are especially interesting because they're on the cusp of adulthood, with one foot still in childhood. They're skeptical, they're questioning, but they haven't lost their enthusiasm and wonder." Margaret Nevinski is a published author whose books for young adults are available at the Bainbridge Public Library, located at the corner of Madison and High School Road. For more information about Ms. Nevinski, viisit her web site at www.margaretnevinski.com. Barbara Clarke -- the author of "Getting to Home: Sojourn in a Perfect House" -- chose to make the island her home. She revealed that she didn't come to writing until later in life and wished that she'd had the advantage of someone like Margaret in her life when she was a teen. In this five minute podcast, both women speak enthusiastically about the free weekly drop-in classes that that they offer during the school year and the joy they get from mentoring budding writers. Both are community volunteers. For more information about the camp, visit the library's web site at www.krl.org.
