Episode 075: 2 Picks from Oprah Magazine’s list of the most anticipated books of 2021! The Women of Chateau Lafayette by Stephanie Dray and Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead We were talking about celebrity book clubs and how Oprah Winfrey really revitalized the idea of having Book Clubs when she had the Oprah Winfrey Show. This became such a huge success in getting people interested in reading and discussing books again. We looked at her master list starting in September of 1996 and she had 86 books total over the last couple of decades. Other popular book clubs are Read With Reese and Read With Jenna. We just love empowered women empowering other women! Because of this discussion we then looked at what else was going on with Ms. Winfrey and books because we love hunting up new titles! Amie chose Jack by Marilynne Robinson, author of Gilead, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. Robinson revisits the community of Gilead, Iowa this time telling the story of John Ames Boughton, the beloved, erratic, and grieved-over prodigal son of a Presbyterian minister. Tami read The Liar’s Dictionary by Eley Williams, a recommendation given to us on Episode 53 by guest Debi Stears, Librarian and Collection Development Manager for the Washoe County Library System. The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach reaches out to inspire, inform, and create a delightful quality of life. Let's get expansive and make some soundwaves. Haven't you heard? Libraries aren't that quiet anymore. Voices from the Stacks empowers library users by sharing their stories. In this podcast, you'll meet and get to know our staff and our community members and maybe even find your next great read. In our very first episode Teen Librarian, Sophie, and Associate Librarian, Amris, go into the digital recording studio to talk about how libraries made an impact on their lives and helped them become lifelong readers. They also discuss their reading goals last year. Hispanic Outreach Librarian, Tara, talks with technology librarian Stephen about his goal of reading the top 100 books as chosen by viewers of PBS's The Great American Read. Stephen found that audio books were helpful while commuting to work and caring for a newborn at home. Tara also speaks to volunteer Sister Vivian who helped to facilitate the Community ID of the Palm Beaches ID Drive which provides a reliable form of ID useful for law enforcement, health centers, schools, businesses, and more. Sister Vivian discusses her reading habits, her book club, and how she loves to come to the library to smell the books. Reference Librarian, Emily, speaks with participants of Millennials Ruin a Book Club who talked about how joining the book club helped to expand their reading horizons. Reference Librarian, Bethany, then invites listeners to join the book club. Children's Librarian, Kristine, was the host and editor for this episode. Meredith and Kaytee return to your feed this week to chat about what we’ve been reading and what we plan to read in the coming year. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a reading project for you, our listeners, and New Year’s gift from the library. Next, we discuss what we are currently reading, and this week includes some new titles, some old ones, and one that (I’m sorry) will release at the end of the summer. Doesn’t matter, you still want to hear about it. This week’s deep dive is a survey of our reading goals for the year. Some are very specific, some are more general, but both of us are excited about the Currently Reading Challenge! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands: a brand new illustrated volume, and a short story fairy tale collection. Tune in to catch a detailed examination of the TOP 10 MOST BELOVED NOVELS OF ALL TIME as chosen by contemporary Americans (followed by a haughty and despairing perusal of the other 90). Cheers! Welcome to Libromania, a new podcast for the book-obsessed from the Close Reads Podcast Network. Each week David Kern will be chatting with authors, biographers, designers, collectors, critics and other people who help make book's so worthy of our attention. Here in chapter 3, we contemplate the incredible (and enduring) popularity of Harper Lee's 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, which was recently named "America's most-loved book" on The Great American Read. More than 4.3 million votes were cast and Lee's novel came in first place. But why do so many people love it so passionately? And why, even after all these years, do we continue to read it so often? To answer these questions David chatted with Adam Andrews, the director of the Center for Lit and the author of Teaching the Classics, about the literary merit of the book; and Dr. Joseph Crespino, professor of history at Emory University and the author of Atticus Finch: The Biography, about the book's place in the culture at-large. Join us for this deep-dive into one of America's most beloved books. Remember: subscribe, rate, review! Help us spread the word. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week's episode is mostly inspired by an email from a listener about evaluating translations, and although Tom and Chad don't provide the hardest and fastest rules, they do have an interesting conversation about how they read and judge translated books. They also follow up on a few different threads from earlier episodes (like the neverending disappointment of The Great American Read), complain about these grants to giant publishers, and make some book recommendations. Other articles and media referenced in this episode: Jenny Hval's Paradise Rot (with the unnerving blood photo) Shelley Jackson's Riddance (with the cool cover graphic) Chad's post on Geography of Rebels by Maria Gabriela Llansol (and a dissenting view from Ben Moser) Chad's post on two Deep Vellum books from Oulipian writers In honor of Paradise Rot, this week's music is "That Battle Is Over" from Jenny Hval's Apocalypse, girl album.
