As a young woman, Lynne became somewhat jaded to Christianity because of a negative experience her parents had with a church. She only agreed to go to Bible college because her best friend was going and it afforded her the opportunity to live in Southern California. When Lynne surrendered to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and gave her life to Jesus, she could only think of what she was giving up to follow Him. She came to realize, however, as she surrendered more and more to the Lord, that God had great things in store for her, including marrying the love of her life and serving in Africa!

Join the movement to help dismantle unhealthy power structures and reclaim your spirituality: https://discord.gg/bPy4VcCTMm This week we're joined by the incredible Dr Lynne Kelly! I remember hearing about Lynne's work during my time on excavation and was completely taken with it. She has spent decades working with indigenous communities around the world, especially Australian Aborigines, to study how they codify memory, transmit knowledge and connect to their landscape. In this episode we talk about the different forms of memory, how indigenous communities can remember generations of information and encode knowledge in the landscape itself to have what on the surface looks like super-human memory. We then unpack the importance of these natural trained memory systems as it pertains to ritual and archaeology before concluding with how to go about training your own memory. Clinton Walker is a Traditional Custodian of the incredible Murujuga (or Burrup Peninsula), on the north-west coast of Australia. You might recall my conversations with archaeologist Peter Veth and the co-authors of Songlines, Lynne Kelly and Margo Neale, last year. They all related back to this place – where the Songlines start, as Clinton puts it. So at the end of last year, as my family and I headed south from the Kimberley, Clinton and I met up to record a yarn for the Clean State podcast, the spin-off series from The RegenNarration specific to my home state of Western Australia. Some of you may have had a listen. It's a shorter snappier format. But on this particular hot summer morning, with so much at stake here right now, and so much to appreciate about what he's up to, Clinton and I settled in for an extended chat. So here's the rest of what we recorded together. I've patched in my intro from the Clean State podcast here first, to help set the scene for you: Murujuga houses the largest rock art collection in the world – around one million petroglyphs, some dating back about 40,000 years. The World Heritage nomination for this place is a shoe-in, unless it's jeopardised by current industry expansion plans – most notoriously, the Scarborough Gas Field proposal, currently being challenged in court and elsewhere, with the stakes running far beyond this incredible ancient place. But there are better ways to go about things here. And Traditional Custodian Clinton Walker is uniquely placed to say. He was a highly paid technician with one of the mining companies here, but he ultimately couldn't bear the harm it was causing his Country. He now runs an extremely successful tour operation called Ngurrangga Tours, and is living the message that sustainable industries such as Indigenous cultural tourism are enormously beneficial - economically, for Country, and for bringing our cultures together. So join us, as Clinton sits us down on a very special part of his Country for that yarn. This conversation was recorded on Country at the Murujuga National Park, on 13 December 2021. Note: The Cultural Heritage Reform Bill has since passed the WA State Parliament, without alteration. Title slide image: Clinton Walker (supplied). Welcome to Jon's author diary for the week ending October 17, 2021. I've had a busy week. Much of it has been spent getting everything ready for my launch of Black Death Survival. This is now up for pre-order and the paperback is live. The hardback is in review and I've been going through the auditions for the audio edition. I've taken a step back from writing A Murder of Crows and have decided I need to write another draft of Dawn of Assassins. I thought this book was done. But it needs something else. My unconscious mind has been nagging at me for a few weeks about this book. And it was right. So, I'm going through one more time to make sure the setting feels more lived in. The story's there, there characters are there, but I need to spend a bit more time showing the setting to the reader. It's a grubby, grimy setting, and although I can picture that in my mind, it doesn't come through onthe page. So, this is going to put my schedule back for this book, but I'd rather release something I'm proud of than a book I know isn't as good as I can make it. Reading This week I read The Memory Code by Lynne Kelly. This was a book about how oral history is communicated through objects and markers on the landscape. Her main argument is the places like Goblekli Tepe, Stonehenge, and Easter Island could have been built to help tell stories. Her research was fascinating, though I'm not sure I buy all of her arguments. I also read The Bone Ships by RJ Barker. This was excellent. If you enjoy nautical fantasy with luscious worldbuilding, this is a book for you. What's next? So, next week is all about getting everything ready for launching Black Death Survival. Plus, I want to carry on with my redraft of Dawn of Assassins. It also looks like my research trip to Egypt is going ahead next month, so I need to start gathering provisions for that. Take care, Jon

Mark Jones is a crocodile handling, campaign building, award-winning Australian film-maker. He has been living and working extensively in the Kimberley for nearly 30 years, since unexpectedly becoming a novice camera operator with revered adventure film maker Malcolm Douglas. Mark develops stories and films with deep underlying messages that reflect this very special part of the world, and its increasingly important part in where we go from here as a society and civilisation. And all that is coming out in both his films and activism to profound effect. Mark has helped lead one of the most formative and successful campaigns in Australian history. And he's collaborated with some of the greats in Australian film and television, also producing for some of the larger international TV broadcasters including the BBC, and NHK in Japan. The WA State Library will archive his collection in 2022. Most recently, Mark directed The Serpent's Tale, the spectacular half-hour film produced in collaboration with the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council, that Anne Poelina and I talked about in episode 84. Now he's onto making the epic and vital Stories in Stone, collaborating with other previous guests on this podcast like Lynne Kelly (ep 92) and Albert Wiggan (ep 34). It's the culmination of a life's work to date, on what science and traditional knowledge are showing us, about the messages left by our ancient ancestors for future generations. This is the first in a series of episodes on-location in the Kimberley – a region often described as one of the last great remaining wildernesses left on the planet. Then she runs us through how it works, how this has transformed her understanding of Indigenous cultures and Country, and how this is just scratching the surface of Songlines, and what it could mean for all of us right now. In the back half of this excerpt, we pick up with Margo Neale sharing some of the transformative decade-long journey bringing the Songlines exhibition to life. Like our previous guest, Lynne Kelly, in part 1 of this series on Songlines, Margo Neale is a pioneer. Margo is of Aboriginal and Irish descent, from the Kulin nation with Gumbayngirr clan connections. And she's the lead curator of the extraordinary exhibition Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters, that has made such an incredible mark on Australia, and is about start its high-profile world tour. At the same time, the First Knowledges book series Margo is bringing together has started with an instant best-seller - Songlines: The Power and the Promise, which Margo co-wrote with Lynne. The second book in the series, on design, is out now, and the following one (by Bill Gammage and Bruce Pascoe) steps straight into the thick of what's become known in Australia as ‘The Dark Emu debate' (triggered by Pascoe's book). That's the pointy end of our reckoning with our still largely unconscious Western colonial worldview. And it's doing it in a way that might just help us finally transcend entrenched feuds, and reveal to more of us the enormous benefits on offer in combining our respective knowledge systems - the most powerful knowledge systems ever known. This is the nub of Margo and Lynne's pioneering work. There's something missing in our reconciliation processes, they say, and by extension with our understanding of how to be fully human in the world, intrinsic to regenerating country as the source of all life. Margo Neale is Head of the National Museum of Australia's Indigenous Knowledges Curatorial Centre. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Australian National University's Centre for Indigenous History. In addition to former fame as a touring go-go dancer! Lynne Kelly is now often referred to as The Memory Whisperer. Amidst great personal trial and self-doubt, she stumbled on a series of insights that are revolutionising Western understandings of ancient knowledge systems. And with the likewise brilliant Indigenous woman Professor Margo Neale, they are showing how the combination of Western knowledge systems with reinvigorated ancient ones, is where the deep promise lies for enabling the regeneration of life on this planet. Late Night Live is one of Australia's longest running radio programs on the ABC. It's hosted by an Australian legend across media, film, the arts, and now even regenerative agriculture, with his wife Patrice Newell. His name is Phil Adams. And late last year, I was gripped by an interview he conducted with Lynne and Margo on release of their book, Songlines: The Power and The Promise. That in turn, stemmed from the Indigenous-led exhibition taking the country, and soon the world, by storm – Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters. Phil said of that exhibition that he's never seen anything of comparable quality anywhere on earth. Margo Neale was the lead curator of that exhibition, alongside the Indigenous communities involved. It was this chat with Phil Adams that also alerted me to the exhibition opening in Perth soon after. We managed to get along just before heading north, and have joined Phil's chorus. I've since read the book by Margo and Lynne, and been blown away. Phil wished they'd allocated an hour to this on his program. Well, let's enact that wish here. And then some. We'll speak with Margo in part 2 of this Songlines series. Today, we feature my conversation with Lynne, on how her transformed life is now helping bridge non-Indigenous understanding of the most powerful knowledge system ever known. And how her personal practice of it has transformed her life – from becoming a national memory championship title holder, to learning languages at will, well into her 60s. And that's just scratching the surface of Songlines, and what it could mean for all of us right now. This conversation was recorded online (from inside the store room of the Exmouth Yacht Club – thanks Cathy & Denise!) on 8 July 2021, with Lynne speaking from her home in Castlemaine, Victoria. Don't wait until you can completely stop before you start looking after yourself. That's a recipe for burnout. I've been moving house this week and I'm tired. In the past, I'd just tell myself to keep pushing and rest later. But these days, I know how important it is to care for myself even when I'm busy. So in this episode, I'm sharing with you some tips and tricks for self care on the fly. I reference Songlines: The Power and Promise by Margo Neale and Lynne Kelly.

What if your circumstances are not happening to you, but actually happening for you? Imagine if the details of your life were part of a specific curriculum designed just for you, your growth, and ultimately your enlightenment. I first came across the idea of life as curriculum from the late Ram Dass, and I find it such a helpful way to frame my experiences. So if you're facing some difficult times (Lockdown 5.0 for example!), see if reframing it like this makes a difference for you. And try it with the easier, lighter times too. I refer once again in this episode to the book, Songlines: The Power and Promise by Margo Neale and Lynne Kelly.  Find it at your local bookstore. :)

I'm conscious that the way we talk about ourselves, our lives and experiences, matters. It makes a difference. So I've learned to keep an eye on what I say, both in my head and out of my mouth, and to ask whether or not it's working for me. In today's episode, I share more and encourage you to pay attention to the commentary you're running on your own experiences, and to consider whether it's serving you well. I share again about the book Songlines by Margo Neale and Lynne Kelly. Australia's history is being significantly rewritten - or perhaps better said, heard. There is growing widespread understanding of the sophistication, presence and wisdom of the First Australians, and not just from the game-changing works of people like Bruce Pascoe and Bill Gammage. Now that modern Australia is looking in more of the right places, with the right mind, and with the First Australians themselves, our national - and really, human - story, is changing everywhere. This is a story of successful continuous human migration, cultivation and livelihood, right across Australia, over many a changing climate and shifting sea level. And leading archaeology professor from UWA, Peter Veth, has been working with First Nations for over 40 years to help share this story. Peter has just started a new dig with First Nations folk here on the North West Cape of Australia, part of the World Heritage Ningaloo Coast. It's expected to reveal the First Nations presence in this part of the world dates back an extraordinary 60,000 years. And when pieced together with other finds and collaborations happening across Australia and the world, it changes the way we see our country, it's people, and the human experience generally. And that, in turn, is broadening the menu of present and future possibilities enormously, at a time when this region, its people, and the world as a whole, need it most. This conversation was recorded on the new moon of 12 May 2021. Title slide image: Cape Range, on the World Heritage Ningaloo Coast (pic: UWA). Modern neuroscience meets ancient mnemonic techniques. This podcast episode is ins English. Dr. Jenny Rodger, neuroscientist and associate professor at the University of Western Australia talks with me about how the brain forms the strongest memories and why methods like the method of loci or the memory palace are such effective methods for learning huge amounts of information faster. We learn about how soldiers with head wounds have told us the most about how the brain works and which parts of the brain are especially active when we learn with those techniques. This tells us a lot about the actual why behind those techniques. Why are these techniques so effective? Dr. Rodger gives us the answer. Modern neuroscience meets ancient mnemonics: Dr. Rodger also shares interesting insight about the work she has done with Dr. Lynne Kelly, author of the fascinating book “The Memory Code” and “Memory Craft”. Dr. Rodger and Dr. Kelly have both done some great work in trying to bring modern neuroscience and ancient mnemonic learning techniques together. Make sure not to miss this fascinating episode. (14:54) The way bestiaries help people in memorizing names (16:40) Creating memory palaces and how Lynne's mum influenced her to visit Stonehenge (20:15) What to know about the key things we can use to create our own memory palaces (25:27) What can you tell us about the stories of indigenous culture and how incredible is the amount of knowledge that has been carried forward for thousands of years? (31:10) How every child needs a lot of land that they can call their own and connect with (40:53) The importance of drawing things out (creating a mind map) instead of listing them (49:17) Are exceptional memorizers made or born? (53:29) Improving our memory through making beaded bracelets and necklaces, and the legality of taking such ornaments into school (1:00:03) Do kids have a better ability to learn languages than we do as adults? Memory takes different forms. Memories can be encoded in the strength of neural connections in our brains, but there’s a sense in which photographs and written records are memories as well. What did people do before such forms of memory even existed? Lynne Kelly is a science writer and researcher who specializes in forms of memory in the ancient world, as well as a competitive memory expert in her own right. She has theorized that ancient structures such as Stonehenge might have served as memory palaces, encoding social knowledge over extended periods of time. We talk about how to improve your own memory, the origin of religion, and how prehistoric cultures preserved their know-how.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Lynne Kelly received her Ph.D. in English from La Trobe University. On this episode of The Porchlight, Bethany interviews her friend and fellow author, Lynne Kelly. As a former special education teacher and now a sign-language interpreter, Lynne has always loved words. She also loves animals, and they have been the catalyst for her debut middle grade novel, CHAINED, as well as her latest book, SONG FOR A WHALE, which Publishers Weekly called "a finely crafted novel." Lynne lives near Houston, Texas with her adorable dog, Holly. You can find Lynne online at lynnekellybooks.com and on Twitter @lynnekelly.     During the interview, Bethany and Lynne discuss the importance of feeling heard and the longing for connection and community that is a universal feeling and also one of the themes of SONG FOR A WHALE. To help all children feel seen and heard, Lynn does school visits and has spoken at both schools for hearing children and those for the deaf community, who have been delighted to see themselves represented in Iris, the main character in Lynne's book. To make sure her novel was authentic, Lynne worked with two sensitivity readers who helped her best convey the deaf experience. One of these readers also came up with the book's fitting tag line, "Make waves about something." In the episode, Lynne also discusses how she works with her agent, Molly O'Neill, and the background that led them to one another. Bethany and Lynne delve into the benefits of critique groups and the importance of fostering relationships with other industry professionals at conferences and workshops. Dr. Lynne Kelly is an Australian writer, researcher and science educator. She has written books on skepticism, crocodiles and spiders; and her latest book The Memory Code examines the traditional memory techniques of non-literate peoples. Her theory on the purpose of the Stonehenge megalithic, which she believes served as a center for the transmission of knowledge among Neolithic Britons, is rapidly gaining recognition among anthropologists. Lynne Kelly is a teacher, science writer and anthropologist of oral and pre-literate cultures. Her most recent book is The Memory Code, which deals with the use of memory techniques including rituals, songs, dances, portable devices, and large-scale geographic features and built structures as memory aids.   She has conducted a series of experiments to replicate memory techniques from the classical memory palace to handheld memory devices such as the Lukasa to rituals and storytelling. Today, we talk about how several early and modern cultures have used these memory techniques, why Stonehenge and Chaco Canyon may have been used as memory palaces, and why they were almost certainly centers for an oral culture's knowledge economy.   As with our other conversations with anthropologists, it's helpful to remember the following guidelines: Do not confuse industrial technological advancement with intelligence. "Primitive" people, whether distant from you in space or time, were and are at least as smart as you. The less technology they had at hand, the more this is true. Fools die when times are hard, or as Lynne Kelly's colleague Nungarrayi said to her, "The elders are pragmatic old buggers. If they weren't, we wouldn't have survived." Most often, they are observationally correct even when they are theoretically wrong. We can identify the exact species of animals in cave paintings despite the fact that the artist didn't have a grip on modern biology. Just as any sufficiently advanced technology looks like magic, so does any technology sufficiently different from our own. People of almost all cultures have been given to humor, hoaxes, tall tales, and flimflammery. Sometimes, when they tell you (or each other) something, they're just having a laugh. Sometimes, they're both having a laugh and expressing something serious. Show notes and links may be found at: http://bottlerocketscience.blogspot.com/2017/09/ep-038-lynne-kelly-on-memory-code.html

Lynne Kelly is a writer and science educator in Australia, and a founding member of Australian Skeptics. An expert on the paranormal who uses aspects of the magicians art to advance skepticism, she holds degrees in education and engineering and is the author over a dozen books, including The Skeptic's Guide to the Paranormal. In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, Lynne Kelly examines differences in paranormal beliefs between Australia and the United States, and whether such beliefs are growing. She talks about various paranormal topics from her book, including crop circles, psychic detectives, and communicating with the dead, and explains how to best convey a skeptical approach to students when addressing such topics. She addresses why she avoids overt skepticism of religion when educating her audiences, and why skepticism as a movement has often avoided religious faith claims. She also debates the perils and proper use of the magician's art, especially "cold reading," when teaching skepticism.
