This weekend we are studying a hymn by Lutheran Pastor, Johnann Mentzer. Like Gerhardt whom we studied last week, Mentzer lived about 100 years after Luther and in a very difficult time, politically and religiously. Like Gerhardt, Mentzer was also familiar with suffering and tragedy. Yet, his faith in the Triune God and the joy which God's work for him instilled, shines through in his hymns. This hymn is no exception. Originally it included 15 stanzas, ten of which are included in our hymnal, but in two different hymns (TLH 30 and 243).   This hymn of praise is addressed to the Triune God (this is why it is found in the Trinity section of our hymnal), which can be seen in the reference to the Father (verse 2), the Savior Jesus (verse 3), and the Holy Spirit (verse 5). The words of this hymn are based in part on Jesus' words to the demonic, Legion after He delivered the man from the oppression of those evil spirits: “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” Then we hear the man's joyful response: "And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him" (Luke 8:39).  This hymn highlights the blessings which God has richly bestowed on us. He is our Creator and Preserver who is our "Guardian kind and tender." He is our Redeemer whose compassion led Him to come "down to ransom me" and "brought me from bondage" though the suffering (keenest woe) He endured on our behalf. He is our Sanctifier, Who gives "me among Thy saints a place" through the faith He works in our hearts, and gives us the power to live lives of good works to His glory.  All of this moves the Christian, the one who has come to know God's love which is shown in all these ways, to "be filled with gladness" even in the face of trouble and trial in this life.  Join us this weekend as we sing our praises to the Triune God for all the great things He has done for me! May the LORD bless your joyful worship this weekend!

This weekend we are studying a hymn by Lutheran Pastor, Paul Gerhardt. Gerhardt lived about 100 years after Luther and in a very difficult time, politically and religiously. The Thirty Years War rages. Religious turmoil created havoc. He was familiar with persecution and tragedy. Three children died in infancy as well as a son and his wife in later years. He was forced to conform to false teaching or leave his call as pastor. His church and home were destroyed by war. But in all of this, Gerhardt remained confident of the Lord's power and Christ's victory over sin, death and every enemy he might face. This hymn was based on the Apostle Paul's words to the Romans: "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:31-39)  The hymn highlights the truth that God's love for us is sure because it is seen in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. God is also more powerful than anything we will face in this life. And if God loves us so much that He gave His Son into death for us, what won't He do for us, that is for our ultimate good? When you face challenges and loss in this life, look to Jesus and His cross. See the love of Jesus which is greater than any enemy we might face. Be assured of God's love and His power over death, sin, and Satan as well! Join us this weekend as gather to express our joy for that Love of God which surpasses all our understanding! May the LORD bless your joyful proclamation of God's love for you in Jesus this weekend!

Amid layoffs, M Health Fairview chaplains raise concerns about spiritual care

On Thursday, Fairview Health Services announced it eliminated 250 positions. Chaplains with the health system said that includes 13 chaplains and two spiritual care support staff positions, mostly at University of Minnesota Medical Center, and that the layoffs include the UMMC's only two Muslim chaplains in a region with a growing Muslim population. Two M Health Fairview chaplains joined Minnesota Now to talk about the effect of the layoffs among the spiritual care staff. Bill Dexheimer-Pharris is a Lutheran Pastor and chaplain at University of Minnesota Medical Center. Imam Tamer Abdelaziz was the lead Muslim chaplain for M Health Fairview until his position was among those eliminated on Thursday.Fairview Health Services has not confirmed the number of chaplains who were laid off, but said in an email to MPR news that M Health Fairview “still has dozens of chaplains working throughout the system, including at UMMC, and of Muslim faith.” A spokesperson sent this statement on the Spiritual Health Services layoffs:We've made the difficult decision to scale back our onsite chaplain services through Fairview's Spiritual Health Services team. This decision was made in part due to the changing ways in which our patients, their families and our staff seek spiritual support. Every day, our care teams help patients and families arrange for visits and support by trusted spiritual leaders, based on their personal religious preference and unique cultural needs and we will continue to do so in partnership with our communities. Spiritual support remains an important part of our patients' and employees' well-being. We will continue partnering with our region's diverse community of faith leaders to support those in need now and in the future. Additionally, our Employee Assistance Program will remain a resource for helping employees connect with the support they may need, including for their spiritual well-being.These programs have served countless patients, families and staff over many years. We are grateful for our staff members who have offered this valuable support, and look forward to deepening our engagement with our communities' diverse faith leaders to support our patients together. The following is a statement issued by Fairview Health Services regarding the layoffs across the system:Last week, we made the difficult decision to eliminate approximately 250 positions across our organization. These changes were done thoughtfully and in a focused way and in select positions throughout the system. The number of eliminated positions represents less than 1 percent of our overall workforce and is a combination of layoffs and attrition. Most of the impacted roles are not full-time positions. Timing for departures is on a case-by-case basis, however generally before the end of the year. Impacted employees will receive various types of support, including retraining, job search assistance, resume and interview training, and priority hiring opportunities for one of the 1,600 available positions in our system. Fairview continues to take thoughtful, deliberate steps to strengthen our organization and ensure that we can operate sustainably in a health care environment that is facing tremendous pressures. An important and necessary part of this work is aligning our workforce to evolving strategic priorities, all while addressing the demands of inflation, including increasing labor costs, and payer reimbursements that don't keep pace with inflation. As we evaluate operations, prioritize our patients and support the team members who care for them, we must evolve as a team. Last week's announcement of changes across our organization is a difficult but necessary step in building a strong and sustainable future for Fairview.M Health Fairview, which is run by Fairview and the University of Minnesota, is an underwriter of MPR News.

She's written three New York Times bestselling memoirs, including Shameless: A Sexual Reformation, which takes on what she sees as the harmful ideas about sexuality that Christianity has promoted throughout history. She's the creator and host of The Confessional podcast, a pop-up prayer network called The Chapel, and a wildly inspirational Substack called The Corners.    Next up is Alice Greczyn - an actress, author, and founder of Dare to Doubt. Her story includes a painful yet rewarding transition from Christianity to atheism, a journey that inspired her to found DaretoDoubt.org, a resource site for people detaching from belief systems they come to fnd harmful.    And last, and probably least, Eric Skwarczynski is the host and creator of the Preacher Boys podcast, which is a platform for survivors' stories about a deeply disturbing pattern of sexual predation and abuse claims within the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement.    You won't want to miss a single second of todays show, so let's get started with our personal Fuck You to Purity Culture, featuring Nadia Bolz Weber, Alice Greczyn, and Eric Skwarczynski. Expanding Horizons

This Easter Sunday, our Minister, Kris Hanna reflects on the theme of Renewal. Like the renewal and rebirth of the phoenix in our "Story for All Ages" - rising out of the ashes of self-sacrifice, Kris reflects on the renewal and hope that arose from the legacies and martyrdom of the Lutheran Pastor and Theologian, Deitrich Bonhoeffer, the Spanish Unitarian, Michael Servetus and that most well-known of all Martyrs, Jesus (Jeshua) of Nazareth, who remained resolute in their belief - in the face of torture and death from those in authority. It's not just a past phenomenon. Contemporary examples of ongoing persecution can be drawn from Muslims in India, the Baháʼí in Iran, and Christian Minority groups - out of which - like the phoenix in our story, will give rise to a legacy of renewal and hope. Easter, Kris reminds us - is also the time to renew our commitment to Love!

In this final episode of season two I continue discussing the relationship between the Bible and organizing. I begin by talking to Keisha Krumm, who opened the first episode of season one (you can hear more about her journey there). Here she gives a reading of Luke 18, or what she renames the parable of the tenacious widow, and reflects on what Scripture means to her in her work. I then talk to Alexia Salvatierra. Alexia shares something of her background, her formation as an organizer, and of her work with predominantly Evangelical churches.  I was keen to talk to Alexia as she has developed a compelling vision of the specific role and gifts of churches in broader social movements and democratic coalitions.  Scripture is central to her vision of the meaning and purpose of democratic politics. Alexia also gives a reading of the tenacious widow, one that compliments and amplifies Keisha's, as well as the story of David and the prophet Nathan in 2 Samuel 12. She situates her readings within a broader account of what she calls serpent and dove power, a framework derived from the exhortation in Matthew 10.16: "See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves."GuestsKeisha Krumm is lead organizer for Greater Cleveland Congregations, a nonpartisan community organizing coalition in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Since 2001, she has previously organized and built community organizations in Los Angeles, Seattle-Tacoma, and Milwaukee. Her work entails developing leaders within congregations, educational associations, nonprofits, and labor unions to tackle issues ranging from job creation, quality education, affordable health care, mental health, to racial justice. Keisha has a master's degree from the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in Christian Community Development. She is a devoted wife and mother who has committed her life to justice seeking.Rev. Dr. Alexia Salvatierra is a Lutheran Pastor with over 40 years experience in combining congregational ministry with community organizing. She is currently the Academic Dean of the Center for the Study of Hispanic Church and Community at Fuller Theological Seminary and the Assistant Professor of Integral Mission and Global Transformation. She is the author with Peter Heltzel of Faith-Rooted Organizing: Mobilizing the Church in Service to the World (Intervarsity Press) and Buried Seeds: Learning from the Resilience of Vibrant Marginalized Christian Communities with Rev. Brandon Wrencher (Baker Academic, 2022). In addition to her academic work, she coordinates the Ecumenical Collaboration for Asylum Seekers and serves on the leadership team of Matthew 25/Mateo 25––a bipartisan Christian network to protect and defend families facing deportation in the name and spirit of Jesus.  She has been a national leader in the areas of working poverty and immigration for over 25 years, including co-founding the national Evangelical Immigration Table in 2011, the 2007 New Sanctuary Movement, the Guardian Angels project for unaccompanied migrant minors in 2014, and Matthew 25/Mateo 25 in 2016. From 2000 to 2011, she was the Executive Director of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice in California—a statewide alliance of organizations of religious leaders who come together to respond to the crisis of working poverty by joining low-wage workers in their struggle for a living wage, health insurance, fair working conditions, and a voice in the decisions that affect them.Scriptures discussed: 2 Samuel 11-12; Matthew 10; Luke 18.  For more information & relevant updates follow me on Twitter: @WestLondonMan For readings to download relevant to or discussed in an episode visit: https://ormondcenter.com/listen-organize-act-podcast

Hello to you listening in Bromma, Stockholm, Sweden!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I look at what is falling apart around us and I wonder, “Really? Is this the best we can do?”  I seek to put aside how I feel so I can better listen, ask questions, begin what will be a very long process of gentle defiance. And, maybe not so gentle. When I stand for something I will not fall for just anything. And today there is a lot of nonsense that can trip us up, make us want to quit.  As my dear friend and colleague Brandi Heather reminds me, “Never, ever, quit, as unreasonable as it seems!”Someone else who did not quit, as unreasonable as that seemed, was  Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) a prominent Lutheran pastor, and a most complicated figure in German history. First as ally and then outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler Niemöller spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps. He is perhaps best remembered for his postwar words, “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”Question: What if we don't do what's reasonable? What if we act from that place where we are our very best, unreasonable, unquenchable selves? What if we proceed until apprehended? Starting right here, right now! You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
