Olivia and Shauna start talking about bangs – the kind that you choose deliberately, not trauma bangs, and then…plot twist! No, that's this week's show topic: twist endings – the epic and the awful. While they do happen on television (usually ruining several years of storytelling), the most memorable twist endings are in movies. But why do filmmakers (including the patron saint of twists, M. Night Shyamalan) use them? What makes a good twist as opposed to a maddening one? The Junkies list their own favorite twist endings and call out some of the worst ones, too. There will be spoilers in this episode, of course, especially when Shauna reveals the incredible secret parents keep from their kids about Santa Claus and the “Tooth Bunny.” Consider yourself warned! Then, the Junkies recommend what you should – or should not – pop this week. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast can now be seen on YouTube! We just can't get enough of these Stephen King film adaptations. Oh, we are going to ruin the ending, and it's a big twist, so fair spoiler warning. Anyways, join Alec, Erik, and frequent return guest and Stephen King expert Dom Berger to discuss 2007's The Mist, an underrated film that feels like a precursor to The Walking Dead. Today on the show we discuss the differences between the novella and the film, favorite characters, Frank Darabonte, does the CGI hold up, and much more. This episode had us laughing a lot. Enjoy!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to deal with an über-religious, murderous, deluded nut bag of a person. Also there are giant monsters in a choking mist threatening to eat us all. It's the Frank Darabont film from 2007, The Mist. We're having a difficult time trying to figure out who is the worst monster in this film. Is it the literal otherworldly insect demon creatures who came through on the titular mist, or is it that damn Mrs. Carmody?Mull it over for a little while. I feel confident that you're going to have just as hard of a time figuring it out.Honestly, at some points, I'd rather just be torn apart by the alien monsters. At least they're just acting like the creatures driven by hunger and instinct that they are. Carmody… Well, she should know better. The moral of this story: If you see a vast, invasive mist headed your way, you'd probably end up doing best to stay out of your local supermarket. You never know how Lord of the Flies it's going to get in there. Or at least make sure you have enough bullets.Recorded on June 23, 2022The Mist - The Movie Database (TMDB)Frank Darabont — The Movie Database (TMDB)Thomas Jane — The Movie Database (TMDB)Laurie Holden — The Movie Database (TMDB)Toby Jones — The Movie Database (TMDB)Marcia Gay Harden — The Movie Database (TMDB)Andre Braugher — The Movie Database (TMDB)William Sadler — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jeffrey DeMunn — The Movie Database (TMDB)Samuel Witwer — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Dark Tower (series) - WikipediaBrooklyn Nine-Nine (TV Series 2013–2021) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Melissa McBride — The Movie Database (TMDB)Frances Sternhagen — The Movie Database (TMDB)Cheers (TV Series 1982–1993) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Alien (1979) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jurassic Park (1993) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jim Jones - WikipediaPeoples Temple - WikipediaJonestown - WikipediaThe Shawshank Redemption (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Green Mile (1999) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tommy Boy | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutOur Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!

This week we have another special edition of the Geektown Radio podcast, as Dave is away at the moment. But we didn't want you to be left without something to listen to so we bring you a great interview with James Parnell, supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer from Monkeyland Audio.James has worked across a range of projects, from tv shows such as 'The Mist', 'Transparent' and 'Scream', to Oscar-winning movies like 'Get Out' and 'Moonlight'. However, it is his work as a supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer on his two most recent projects we wanted to talk to him about. They are Hulu's middle school comedy 'PEN15' and Netflix romcom 'The Perfect Date'.'PEN15' is middle school as it really happened. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle star in this adult comedy, playing versions of themselves as thirteen-year-old outcasts in the year 2000, surrounded by actual thirteen-year-olds, where the best day of your life can turn into your worst with the stroke of a gel pen. Behind the awkward teenage jokes is a moving coming-of-age story, based on the two creators personal experiences growing up.For James, the responsibility of creating a soundscape that can reflect all aspects of the show, from its use of humour to its exploration of deeper topics like race, marriage, friendship and self-image, was instrumental. James often noted that he can still "hear" his own middle school experience and drew a lot of inspiration from that to create the sounds for this show. It is designed to be humorous and nostalgic, reminding the audiences' of their own formative years. 'The Perfect Date' is a romantic comedy which follows Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo) through his last months of high school where, in a bid to be able to afford tuition at Yale University, develops an app which makes him a “stand-in” for girls needing dates. James was responsible for mixing the sonic core of the film, including all the sounds associated with the app to the different environment of multiple school campuses. His role was to take all the raw sonic elements and combine it into a cohesive soundscape that enhances the action to see on screen. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Good day Calmlee’s Nation! Who’s ready to conquer the world today! What are some of your favorite Stephen King books and movies? I know I’ve posted a few times recently about Stephen King, But he’s got a lot going on this year! We have The Dark Tower hitting theaters next month and the remake of of the clown movie “It” will be out in September. Mr. Mercedes has been adapted into a TV series! Wow! Unfortunately though it’s only available on Directv. But David E. Kelly is the guy developing it, so it should be pretty cool. He did a lot of TV in the 90’s. (L.A. Law, Chicago Hope, Ally Mcbeal…) Whoa what’s this! TheMist is on TV! The movie is now a TV show spike TV! It premiered back in June and will run for 10 episodes. Two books coming out soon! “Gwendy’s Button Box” came out in May. “Sleeping Beauties” is out in September. That’s it for now. Have a good day!

Happy Birthday to me -- Aaron here, and in case you're wondering, we recorded Episode 58 on the eve of my 41st birthday. I'm totally still accepting presents, if you feel so inclined. And given the nature of this special event, my lovely wife Kelly joined Jack and myself as our special guest. Get ready for a heaping helping of alcohol, cake and rambling about television. NEWS: Last Friday, Apple poached Sony TV’s co-presidents Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht leading to rumors of layoffs at Sony while also bringing Apple’s presence in the TV game back in a big way.  HBO is once again developing a "Watchmen" TV series, this time with Damon Lindelof -- the showrunner of "Leftovers" (yay!) who is also the writer behind "Prometheus" and some of the dumbest "LOST" episodes (boo!). The CW is once again developing a "Supernatural" spin-off idea. "The Wayward Sisters" would follow Sheriff Jody Mills as she leads a “group of troubled young women, all of them orphaned by supernatural tragedy. Under Mills’ training and protection, these women will emerge as a supreme monster-fighting force.” The plan is to introduce the series via a backdoor pilot episode airing as part of "Supernatural’s" upcoming 13th season. We have a new premiere date for "Star Trek: Discovery": September 24. The series premiere will air on CBS and CBS All Access, with all the following episodes set to air solely on the network’s streaming platform. NBC Universal has officially green-lit a "Downton Abbey" movie. No word yet on which members of the original cast will appear in the film -- it’s set to begin production in 2018. "Sherlock" creators Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatniss are setting their sights on "Dracula." They’re planning to present the series in 90-minute episodes, much like Sherlock, while dipping into the Bram Stoker story. No network is attached as of yet, but it’ll probably go to BBC … right? After an internal investigation, ABC will resume shooting this season of "Bachelor in Paradise" in Mexico. Parent company, Warner Brothers, viewed the tape of the whole thing -- which makes this so much more icky -- the company has decided that no wrong-doing occurred. Contestant Corinne Olympios will be continuing her own investigation through her personal attorney. CMT will not be acquiring "Last Man Standing," after all. The next Spike TV roast will be of Alec Baldwin with Kate McKinnon, Jack McBrayer, Julianne Moore, Jane Krakowski and Tracy Morgan all set to attend. The special will air on July 9. Hello and welcome to episode 133! This week we watched the straight-to-video movie 'Blood Creek'. We were both pleasantly surprised by this film and agreed that it is worth a look. Other movies we watched this week include 'Mission Impossible 4' and 'The Mist', which is a favorite of ours (see episode #58 for full review). We didn't have a Crawling Chaos segment this week, but we'll have something good next week. ;) Blood Creek (2009) R, 90 minutes When a family agrees to host an occult-obsessed Nazi scholar in their West Virginia farmhouse prior to World War II, they're transformed into his undead slaves and must kidnap local victims to feed his bloodlust. Years later, an abducted war hero (Dominic Purcell) breaks free from the zombie family's clutches, rounds up his brother (Henry Cavill) and returns to the wilderness for payback. Joel Schumacher directs this supernatural horror flick.
