Host Geri Cole speaks to PEN15 co-creators, co-writers, and co-stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle about how the duo met (at an experimental theater program in Amsterdam), how PEN15 has become even more honest and raw in its second season, and the curious case of writing for yourself as a 13-year-old. Maya Erskine is a writer and actor known for her onscreen roles in several comedy series, including MAN SEEKING WOMAN, HEARTBEAT, CASUAL, and INSECURE. Anna Konkle is a writer, actor, and director, known for co-starring in the Fox police procedural ROSEWOOD. Together, Erskine and Konkle co-created, co-write, and co-star in the Hulu series PEN15. Anna Konkle followed a typical pursuit into acting until she and Maya Erskine (Wine Country, Plus One) decided to created their own web series. Now, the series is on Hulu, where the duo plays middle school girls. On Pen15, the description reads, “The comedic story of middle school seen through the eyes of two 7th grade girls dealing with the awkwardness of being a teenager.” In this interview, Anna talks about working on ‘Man Seeking Woman,' influence from Lena Dunham, writing weird ideas, creating a non-traditional writer's room, breaking a season in two days, and writing emotional truths in comedy. Writer-actors always make for insightful interviews, but that’s particularly true for Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who write, produce, edit, and star as middle school–aged versions of themselves on Hulu’s Emmy-nominated cringe comedy “Pen15.” Together they shed light on their “creative ESP” as collaborators, their distinct page-to-screen process alongside director Sam Zvibleman, and how to overcome the self-doubt inherent in a Hollywood career—especially for women onscreen. “I have permission to be free and wild and sort of unapologetic,” says Maya of playing a 13-year-old. Anna agrees: “I’m so grateful that we got the opportunity to just be characters with zero sex appeal. Born to a Chicago-native mother and a Ghanaian-born father, Stacy grew up with a love for storytelling. Her goal as an artist is to bring untold stories to the stage and screen, stories that challenge our political, societal, and stereotypical views of the Black experience. Her passion led her to a BFA in drama from NYU and an MFA in playwriting from Hunter College. Her previous plays include: Dirty Blood, Animals (which received an Irv Zarkower Award), The Pearl and The Black Sea (which received an Honorable Mention in The Kilroy's 2015 List), and Hang Man (which received an Honorable Mention in The Kilroy's 2017 List and a production at The Gift Theatre in Chicago). Stacy was also involved in Los Angeles' Ensemble Studio Theatre (EST), Youngblood, MADLAB, and the Nashville Repertory Theatre's Ingram Play Lab alongside Christopher Durang. She has been the recipient of the MacDowell Colony Fellowship and PLAY LA's Humanitas Prize. As of late, Stacy has transitioned into television writing where she has received her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her work on PEN15, shared with the series creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle.  Most recently, Stacy served as a Writer and Story Editor for HBO's critically-acclaimed series and Emmy winning series, Watchmen.  We talk about: how growing up in a "weird" town helped to shape her writer's voice how she gets her ideas out of her head and into the universe character and world building exercises look differently in the playwriting world vs. TV/film her experience in the Watchmen writer's room and more!

This week we have another special edition of the Geektown Radio podcast, as Dave is away at the moment. But we didn't want you to be left without something to listen to so we bring you a great interview with James Parnell, supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer from Monkeyland Audio.James has worked across a range of projects, from tv shows such as 'The Mist', 'Transparent' and 'Scream', to Oscar-winning movies like 'Get Out' and 'Moonlight'. However, it is his work as a supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer on his two most recent projects we wanted to talk to him about. They are Hulu's middle school comedy 'PEN15' and Netflix romcom 'The Perfect Date'.'PEN15' is middle school as it really happened. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle star in this adult comedy, playing versions of themselves as thirteen-year-old outcasts in the year 2000, surrounded by actual thirteen-year-olds, where the best day of your life can turn into your worst with the stroke of a gel pen. Behind the awkward teenage jokes is a moving coming-of-age story, based on the two creators personal experiences growing up.For James, the responsibility of creating a soundscape that can reflect all aspects of the show, from its use of humour to its exploration of deeper topics like race, marriage, friendship and self-image, was instrumental. James often noted that he can still "hear" his own middle school experience and drew a lot of inspiration from that to create the sounds for this show. It is designed to be humorous and nostalgic, reminding the audiences' of their own formative years. 'The Perfect Date' is a romantic comedy which follows Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo) through his last months of high school where, in a bid to be able to afford tuition at Yale University, develops an app which makes him a “stand-in” for girls needing dates. James was responsible for mixing the sonic core of the film, including all the sounds associated with the app to the different environment of multiple school campuses. His role was to take all the raw sonic elements and combine it into a cohesive soundscape that enhances the action to see on screen. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine, co-creators and stars of the middle school-based comedy PEN15, met and bonded in college. But they knew their most authentic collaboration would come from playing themselves as adolescents, which started them on a six-year journey to put together their show. Maya and Anna talk with Marc about playing their 13-year-old selves again, what it was like to redo traumatic moments of their youth, and why all the other actors are age-appropriate teens. Also, Anna explains what she learned from Marc when she worked with him and Maya details the process that led to the casting of her real mom as her TV mom. This episode is sponsored by ZipRecruiter and SiriusXM. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle created an star in the brilliant new show PEN15, on Hulu. It's show about middle school. Or, I guess this is more accurate: it's about middle school you might have actually experienced. It's set in the year 2000 and it captures the era perfectly: N*SYNC songs, lip gloss, bebe tanks and all. But PEN15 digs deeper into what it means to be 12 or 13. It's a scary, weird, uncertain time. And nobody really knows what they're doing. It's a show about kids that definitely isn't for kids - sex and menstruation come up a bit, and we'll talk about that in this interview, too. Don't miss this one - just like their show, Maya and Anna are fascinating, hilarious and profoundly insightful.

Ken and Kendra discuss Hulu’s Pen15 with a call in from our number one fan from the Boston branch, Hannah Gagnon. We give absolutely zero intro information on Pen15, but it’s a show set deeply in the early 2000s telling the story of two friends who are in middle school. The whole team deeply relates to the show and are big fans of what Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine have made! AIM what a messy place for predators and friends. We also relive our middle school best friendships and really explore how the show mirrors life so closely that it's sometimes hard to watch. We once again didn’t do a connection to Peri Gilpin, mostly because the show is mostly cast with 12 year olds. The much-praised Hulu series PEN15 is about two middle-school girls who feel like they might never figure out how to grow into adults. The show was created by Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle and Sam Zvibelman. And the hook is that Erskine and Konkle play versions of themselves as kids, awkwardly surrounded by actual tween actors.

Created by co-star Issa Rae and writer/comic Larry Wilmore ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), the comedy series looks at the friendship of two black women in a unique, authentic way. It features the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.True Detective (S3)Season 3 of "True Detective" plays out in three separate time periods, telling the story of the 1980 disappearance of a young Arkansas boy and his sister, and a mystery that deepens over decades.
