A lifetime in sport inevitably leads to injuries, especially if you play contact sports. Rugby was my game until my mid-twenties, by which time I had dislocated both shoulders at least once and broken my collar bone once. Minor concerns compared to some players, but nonetheless it's these injuries that caused me to take up triathlon more seriously. I broke the other collar bone more seriously in a bike crash in 2015 (so much for avoiding injuries!). It's fair to say my shoulders have had their fair share of injuries. I've managed to get by without surgery but it's always a matter of doing lots of work to make sure they stay stable and relatively pain free. For most endurance athletes, shoulders are not as troublesome as those other joints but they still take a lot of hammering. Countless metres in the pool, the occasional impact from falling off your bike or while running, and not to mention the daily postural challenges from everyday living. Tim Stevenson is this week's podcast guest. Tim runs a business called Dynamic Shoulders. He's a strength coach who started on the specialisation journey like many folks - overcoming his own shoulder problems. He then worked as a strength coach with para swimming. If you have shoulder issues or want to keep them healthy, this episode is a must as we chat about: The shoulder complex and its interaction with other joints Shoulder stability and how to achieve it. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Note: Meditation starts at 1:22 Lectio Divina is the divine or sacred reading of Scripture. Create some sacred space for God and spend a few quiet moments engaging with his Word. As you allow the Spirit to lead, you may be surprised by where he leads you. Once you've listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, then head over to the next episode and catch the interview with leadership coach, author and Bible teacher, Tim Stevenson to hear where the Lord led him. If you would like to go deeper into the life of Moses, this series coincides with lesson 1 of Jodie's Bible study: Choose: A Study of Moses for a Life that Matters You can find Jodie at Jodieniznik.com Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @jodieniznik Download your free Lectio Divina Guided journal here. The exact verses read in this podcast are printed her for your use. Exodus 5:22-6:2 22 Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” 6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.” 2 God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord.
So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Tim is a Master Sherpa Executive Coach, author of 11 published books and hundreds of leadership articles. He also served for many years in pastoral ministry and is an insightful bible teacher. Take a few minutes to meditate on Exodus 5:22-6:2 and then listen in to hear where God led Tim. Some highlights from our conversation: Tim gives us the back story to this verse and helps us understand why Moses might have been caught off guard by the Israelites anger. The Scripture says God hardened Pharaoh's heart. Tim gives us his perspective on what this means and answers the question, “Was Pharaoh a good guy before God hardened his heart – or was there something else at play?” It's very possible to do the right thing and have things go terribly wrong. This can lead to feeling angry with God. What should we do with this anger – and what can we learn from how Moses deals with his anger. We talk about why circumstances and feelings aren't the best metric for knowing and following God's will. And we also discuss how we can know God's voice better. On this episode we are joined by David 'Jacko' Jackson. Founding member of 'School of Calisthenics', alongside previous guest Tim Stevenson. Jacko is an Oxygen Advantage master breathwork coach, the juicy topic which was definitely the theme of our discussion. Jacko talks us through how discovering breathwork helped him come back from an injury which had seriously disrupted his quality of life, and which then lead him down the path of upgrading his fitness, using the power of the breath, and how he's now helping others to do the same. We covered some serious ground, talking about the mechanics of breathing, common disfunction, and how you can make huge changes in your very next workout. This one definitely warrants a part two, and believe me- it's already in the works.

David Jackson is a Master Instructor with Oxygen Advantage, a former professional rugby player, accredited UKSCA Strength & Conditioning coach, NASM performance enhancement & corrective exercise specialist on a mission to make breathwork a normal part of our everyday lives. Having retrained his breathing after a brain injury in 2013 forced him to retire from professional rugby. However, he became passionate about breathing as it improved the symptoms. Following Rugby, Jacko went on to form the School of Calisthenics with his business partner Tim Stevenson. Upon coming across the oxygen advantage book by Patrick McKeown, David's journey into breathing became a bit of an obsession, leading him to his next mission of making breathwork normal. He specialises in breathwork for sporting performance, and our conversation delved into his journey and the importance of nasal breathing. On Episode 43 of The Bulldog Gear Podcast we are joined by the absolute strength and conditioning phenom that is Tim Stevenson. Tim was good enough to very succinctly surmise our chat in a post pod instagram story, so I'll just borrow his words here- we talked Dynamic Shoulders, rethinking upper body training methodologies and having enough confidence in your shoulders to throw your kids obscenely high in a swimming pool. This was a majorly enlightening conversation with A LOT of actionable take-aways, so grab a pen and listen up.

Tim is a Master Sherpa Executive Coach, author of 11 published books and hundreds of leadership articles. But most importantly to me, he used to be my pastor and has been a mentor and friend to me through the years. I can't wait for you to hear from him. He is a wealth of biblical insight and knowledge. Take a few minutes to listen to the experience podcast doing Lectio Divina on Psalm 103 and then tune into this interview to hear where God led Tim. Psalm 103 is Tim's self-professed favorite Psalm and so we have a deep conversation about it because he's been mining it for years. We talk about how this Psalm is dripping with grace. The four deepest questions in our hearts are those of Origins (Where did I come from?), Identity (Who am I?), Purpose (Why am I here?), and Destiny (Where will I end up?). On my own journey I had almost all of these wrong, resulting in me not really knowing my purpose. If we are to become a people of influence we need a good understanding of these crucial question. A message by Tim Stevenson. How often do we find ourselves in a place we don’t want to be? How often do we get comfortable with the status quo? What factors cause us to camp and not move on? Here are some keys to breaking camp and stepping out into more of our inheritance.
Tim Stevenson (Head of Exercise Science & Handstands) and David "Jacko" Jackson (Head of Human Flags) are both Strength and Conditioning coaches and Founders of the "School of Calisthenics". In this episode they discuss; Their accidental route into calisthenics in their own training and coaching. Why Fun and Experimentation are a key element for them in training and coaching. The multiple potential benefits physically and mentally in implementing calisthenics with youth athletes. Why simply adding load might just be "Lazy" coaching. How calisthenics ability might differ with later vs early maturers. How alternative forms of training are often neglected in S&C degree programs.
