When Tom Brechtlein was 18 years old he saw Chick Corea and Return to Forever on PBS Television. At that moment he remembers thinking - I'm going to play with this guy someday.” Two years later, at the age of 20, Tom auditioned for Chick Corea and got the gig. He performed & recorded with Chick untill 1983. Their musical relationship continued off and on throughout the years and as recently as 2016 with 15 tours and 5 recordings. Other artists Tom has toured and recorded with are Manhattan Transfer, Wayne Shorter, Al Di Meola, Joe Farrell, Jean Luc Ponty, Robben Ford & The Blue Line, Rickie Lee Jones, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and Eric Johnson. In this conversation, Tom shares about a multitude of topics including his time with Chick Corea (and how he met Chick), Wayne Shorter, Kenny Loggins, and others. Be sure to visit Tom's website at: https://www.tombrechtlein.com Tom Brechtlein grew up in East Meadow, Long Island and gravitated to drums after listening to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In junior high, his attention turned to big band jazz, and he became attracted to the music of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. His investigation of jazz led him to Dave Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello and then to modern giants like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams as well as legends like Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. "When I was 18," he recalls, "I saw Chick Corea's Return To Forever on PBS Television; and I remember sitting there thinking, ' I'm going to play with that guy someday.'" Two years later, in 1978, he auditioned with Corea and got the gig. He remained in the band till 1983, at which point he joined Wayne Shorter's band. There followed extensive road work with guitarist Al Di Meola and violinist Jean Luc Ponty before Tom finally hooked up with Robben Ford in 1986.
George Whitty is one of the reasons I moved to America, due to his involvement in the live recording of the Return of the Brecker Brothers world tour in 1992, a VHS that I wore out on a daily basis and swore I would try and play with everyone in the band. My dream of doing that has come true over the past 25 years, and not only that, but it has led to one of my most cherished musical friendships, both professionally and personally. George and I have been playing in a somewhat co-led trio Third Rail (we both contribute songs to the band, although it was George's idea to put the band together) since 2012, and have played in the US, Europe and Japan, releasing one live album in 2014 "Live Across Europe", with the great Tom Brechtlein on drums. George is one of my favorite cats to be on the road with, and whenever we get a chance to play together, the music is always going to be big fun, and then the hang (something all musicians spend more time doing than playing music) even more so. George's credits are so deep and far reaching, it's hard to list them all in one place. Aside from the four Grammy Awards and one Emmy, he's produced music, played with, and arragned for Michael Brecker, The Brecker Brothers, Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, Celine Dion, Richard Bona, and many more. Dave started as the voice of “The Little Green Sprout” from the Jolly Green Giant Commercials. Dave attended North Texas State University. He also studied with Peter Erskine, Gregg Bissonette, Steve Houghton, Joe Porcaro, David Garibaldi, Tom Brechtlein, and spent many hours jamming in his garage with roommate, Gary Novak. At the age of 17, Dave began his studio drumming career, playing on nearly 1000 tv jingles. Dave most recently played on the soundtrack for the Netflix series Jessica Jones and Showtime’s Homeland. Some of his career’s highlights have been working with Sheila E, Toni Braxton, Larry Graham, Herbie Hancock, Sheryl Crow, David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, George Duke, Lee Ritenour, Diane Warren, Earl Klugh, Smokey Robinson, The Rippingtons, David Byrne, Ray Parker Jr. Dave Koz, Joe Sample, The Manhattan Transfer, Chaka Kahn, and James Ingram. Dave also worked on the TV show Glee as a technical consultant. He was recruited by Microsoft and worked there as a web developer for 2 years. He was the Artist Relations Manager at Behringer for 2 years. He is currently doing freelance web development for Facebook. He is the creator of PossibleChops.com.

We spread our wings this episode and interview our first bassist, Jimmy Haslip. Now before you call me out regarding our bassists’s perspective show, with two of our favorite bass players, keep in mind that was a four mic show and not really an interview. Most of you will know Jimmy from his long-term relationship with the seminal fusion group the Yellowjackets. During his 32-year tenure with the band Jimmy and fellow band mates released some of the most influential music in that genre’s history. All the while Jimmy continued to work with other musicians on various live and studio projects which ultimately led him to develop an affinity and mastery for production. In 2012 Jimmy decided to take a break from touring to concentrate on producing music of his own and for other like-minded musicians. Little did he know that break would turn into a permanent full-time gig. In this episode we caught up with Jimmy during his recent stop in Atlanta with the Oz Noy trio. I met him in the lobby of his hotel where we set up shop and talked about his recent gigs and production projects. We then devote the majority of show discussing the drummers that Jimmy has worked with. It is one of the most impressive and comprehensive lists of drummers and percussionists I’ve ever seen. We naturally discuss his work with great jazz and fusion players such as: Will Kennedy, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gergo Borlai, Tom Brechtlein, and Joel Rosenblatt. But we also cover a list of players that you wouldn’t normally associate with Jimmy. And…of course, we finish up with a run through the gauntlet that is the DWG Rorschach test. Rod Morgenstein is one of the preeminent musicians of our time. He is known for being in one of the most important fusion bands (Dixie Dregs) in history, one of the most popular hard rock bands (Winger, also known for their individual musical virtuosity as well) of the 80s, and a legendary educator (author of several popular method books, hundreds of pedagogical articles, and a twenty year stint at the Berklee College of Music). Fresh from an extensive North American tour with the Dixie Dregs, Rod was kind enough to join us from his home in New York to chat about drums, his education, performing, the music business, and his passion for writing and teaching. We discovered during our chat that Rod has connections with DWG guest and advisory board member, Tom Brechtlein. Both drummers studied under Ronnie Gould while attending Nassau Community College. Rod then transferred to the University of Miami where he befriended Danny Gottlieb, graduated with his music degree and ultimately formed the Dixie Dregs with Steve Morse, Andy West, Allen Sloan, and T Lavitz. We then discussed the music business and what it means to be a full member of a working band. Rod details the pros and cons along with how it sometimes pays to be a side man in certain situations. Winger happened just at the right time after the Dixie Dregs went on hiatus and Rod relocated to New York to find work. Rod tells us how a chance meeting turned into his lifelong dream of playing in a successful arena rock band. We finish up with Rod detailing how he was hired on a temporary appointment to teach at the Berklee College of Music. Ultimately it turned into a twenty year association with the school having Rod commute 240 miles (one way) each week during his tenure there. For episode 2 of "Accountability Thursday" we doff our cap to Austin resident Tom Brechtlein and work on the NARD solo, "The Texan". Tom recently relocated to Austin and has worked out of the NARD book (he talked about it during our chat from episode 65) so we thought it was only logical to make this solo a part of our new show! This solo is a bit longer and has a few more twists and turns than our last solo. The highlights feature eighth note, ternary style, seven stroke rolls along with dotted quarter note fifteen stroke rolls. You can put a little 'breath' in each of these rolls to make them full and funky. By laying those two rolls on the back side of the beat it makes this solo feel great and stay true to the proper interpretation. Tom Brechtlein is one of the premier drummers of our time. We were honored to be able to speak with Tom and he did not disappoint! In this episode not only does Tom talk about his association with the above artists he also tells us about growing up in Long Island, NY and how the music programs in public school shaped his career. We also discuss his experience with college music school and how taking lessons with a pianist led him to an audition with Chick Corea and subsequently a move to Los Angeles. What is the Stickman Drum Experience? Well, it is a fantastic drum retreat that is located 20 minutes NW of Regina, SK at the Living Skies Retreat & Conference Centre overlooking the absolutely gorgeous Qu’Appelle Valley. I have traveled by car all the way across Canada, and in my deliberately scenic travels, the Qu-Appelle Valley remains to me as one of the most breathtaking sites in Canada. It is a complete anomaly. Located in an otherwise flat province, the Qu-Appelle Valley is even more striking due to the contrast geographically. So, to host a drum retreat at this location is something I could get into. Could you imagine playing a drum set and overlooking this? I can. At Stickman you will have the pleasure of rubbing shoulders and eating meals with some of the worlds’ finest talent. For 2017 you’ll be meeting Brian Fraser Moore, Pat Steward, Tom Brechtlein, Aaron Edgar, Matt Johnson, Jim Riley, and of course your hosts Jayson Brinkworth and Chris Dimas. From what Jayson explained to me, Stickman sounds like a complete experience that begins with fellowship. “One of the biggest things is it's not competitive and there is so much support and everybody comes out feeling like they have really, really improved their skills as a human being and a drummer” is how Jayson described the human element to this event. For the artists, it must be a fantastic experience as well. It sounds like such a tranquil and yet stimulating environment that is filled with positive vibes and lots of opportunities for personal growth, perhaps you make a new friend, traded some great ideas or offered encouragement to your peers OR built your own snare drum under the tutelage of the legendary builder, Ronn Dunnett. A functional keepsake and a personal experience to take home with you, along with some fantastic memories. I commend the team at Stickman for combining their efforts to create such a great environment and experience for the drumming community. It is so great to know that there are such positive places left on the planet for people to share, be inspired, play, and learn. Drummer Tom Brechtlein’s rise to success is the classic tale of hard work, perseverance and self-promotion. From his big break of landing a steady gig with Chick Corea in 1978, he has gone on to perform with some heavyweights, such as Wayne Shorter, Al Dimeola, Jean Luc Ponty, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Christopher Cross and many others. Over the past eight years, Brechtlein has toured extensively with Kenny Loggins and has also found a new niche with teaching drums and percussion.
