What happens when you're suddenly the one in charge of all the paperwork, passwords, and decisions, but you're not sure where to begin? In this heartfelt and practical episode, father-and-son duo Peter and Jacob Gordon share how daily money management can be a lifeline for people navigating everything from grief and memory loss to major life changes like retirement, divorce, or moving across the country. They didn't set out to become financial organizers—but life led them here through personal family experiences, and now they're helping others find order and peace during some of life's most overwhelming moments. You'll hear them discuss: • How their family's own challenges with elder care inspired them to create a service that supports others in managing the emotional and practical sides of personal finance. • The unexpected transitions that often lead people to seek help—like a partner's death, a dementia diagnosis, or simply realizing the bills haven't been opened in months. • What it means to be a daily money manager, and how their work goes far beyond bill pay to include safeguarding personal data, organizing financial records, and helping clients feel less isolated. • Why solo agers—those without family support nearby—often rely on them as trusted fiduciaries to serve as power of attorney, healthcare proxy, or executor when no one else can. • The ways loneliness, memory loss, and vulnerability intersect—and how just having someone to check in weekly can dramatically improve a person's wellbeing and confidence. • How they collaborate with financial advisers, attorneys, and care professionals to create a wraparound team that protects clients from falling through the cracks. • Their top piece of advice for anyone suddenly managing money on their own: start by finding out exactly where everything is, before trying to make sense of it. Peter Gordon: Kiwi Chef on the state of the hospitality sector, New Zealand's first Meatball Festival

Kiwi Chef Peter Gordon is a staple of New Zealand's hospitality industry – but he's had a bit of a change in focus recently. Hawke's Bay is set to host New Zealand's first ever Meatball Festival, with up to 25 vendors filling the city's CBD on March 14th. Gordon will share his years of experience with students at the newly reopened Eastern Institute of Technology Culinary School, rolling out a special recipe he's created and perfected for the occasion. His meatball offering consists of First Light Farms wagyu beef meatballs with kawakawa salsa verde – a slightly more creative choice than the standard recipe most would be familiar with. Gordon told Mike Hosking that there's going to be a real variety of things at the festival, with seafood to pork and everything in between. “I thought it's just got to look really pretty, be tasty, and sort of, y'know, do a good service, not a disservice.” He told Mike Hosking the numbers of students enrolled in culinary schools around New Zealand have dropped off, which is a shame. “Hospitality is one of our big earners here, and y'know, we export really good kitchen people around the world,” Gordon said. “It should be a really appealing job.” Although the hospitality industry is currently struggling, Gordon says there's always a give and take when it comes to opportunities and new ventures. “Every day there's something, y'know, you read in the paper an institution or something is shut down, but at the same time, there are lots of new places opening.” “There's always lots going on.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Peter Asher (Peter & Gordon) and Jeremy Clyde (Chad & Jeremy) were stars during the British Invasion era of the 1960s. Peter & Gordon had massive hits with songs like “A World Without Love” and “I Go To Pieces”. Peter went on to have an illustrious career in the music business, first as the head of A&R for Apple Records where he signed a then-unknown James Taylor, then as producer for many artists including Linda Ronstadt, and currently as the host of “From Me To You”, a weekly Beatles show on Sirius/XM. Jeremy was half of Chad & Jeremy who had several big hits including “Yesterday's Gone” and “A Summer Song”. He tours together with Peter these days. We do two Songfests - one where we select and discuss several favorite British Invasion era songs by other artists that were One Hit Wonders or off the beaten path. And the other where we play and discuss a few of Peter & Gordon's hits plus a Peter and Jeremy song.My featured song is “This Time” from the album “Bobby M and the Paisley Parade”. A new TV3 show is aiming to highlight New Zealand's food waste.  Chefs are coming together in ‘Food Rescue Kitchen' to challenge viewers' perceptions of waste and what can be done with ingredients they otherwise might not consider.  Peter Gordon, one of the country's most iconic chefs, is taking part and told Mike Hosking that he had a really good time on the show and enjoyed the challenge.  He said that while most will be picturing rotted or expired food when food waste is talked about, that's only some of it.   Gordon said that a lot of waste is created when stores or supermarkets have to make room for the next delivery, and that's often the point it's at its prime.  “For my particular challenge, I had some of the most amazing stone fruit,” he told Hosking.  “I thought I'd never bought it like that from a shop before.”  'Food Rescue Kitchen' premieres on Three and ThreeNow at 7PM Saturday April 27th. Peter Gordon is no stranger to the National Bone Marrow Transplant Link.  The author of "Six Years and Counting: Love, Leukemia, and the Long Road Onward"  was very well received at our book club.  Today you'll hear his story. In 2008, this avid outdoorsman was living in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and his girlfriend had just moved down from Montreal to marry him.  Soon after, he was diagnosed with leukemia and put on the transplant waiting list at Boston's Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  The wait for a donor was the hardest part for him, as weeks turned into months.Eventually, Peter did get his transplant and returned to his idyllic surroundings to recover.  Soon after, his new wife slipped on ice and shattered her knee and ankle.   Peter had to take the role of caregiver as he continued his own recovery. 14 years after his transplant, Peter still battles chronic Graft vs Host Disease.  During his treatment, he began writing a blog.  As Peter showed the outside world what his treatment was like, he discovered a passion for writing, eventually leading to the book.   He even has a section in the book on lessons for patients, called Many Medicines Besides Drugs.   Peter gives his advice, including writing down all of your symptoms, and understanding that your recovery will have peaks and valleys.  And you'll also hear a great piece of advice that Peter and his wife learned from - believe it or not - their cat, Gizmo. Link to Peter's Book: https://www.amazon.com/Six-Years-Counting-Leukemia-Onward/dp/1478750626Other ResourcesNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Peter's book Six Years and Counting: Love, Leukemia, and the Long Road OnwardPeter's Writer/Speaker Facebook pagePeter's  LinkedIn profileThank you to this season's sponsors:Thank you to our sponsors. Peter Asher (Peter & Gordon) and Jeremy Clyde (Chad & Jeremy) were the softer counterparts to the hard rock beat groups of the British Invasion era of the 1960s. Jeremy was half of Chad & Jeremy and had several big hits including “Yesterday's Gone” and “A Summer Song”. He recently was a guest on this podcast. Peter and Jeremy tour together these days. We do two Songfests - one where we select and discuss several favorite British Invasion era songs by other artists that were One Hit Wonders or off the beaten path. Martin Heidegger did not like small thoughts. He was fascinated by the most expansive questions humans can ask themselves. Questions like: Why are we here at all? Why do things exist as they do? What does it mean to be in the world? Heidegger came to believe that many of the modern answers to these questions were based on old, unexamined assumptions. Instead of accepting those assumptions, Heidegger wanted to return to the great philosophical texts of the past and see if he could recover and reveal deep truths that had been obscured or forgotten. The result of this intellectual treasure-hunting is his most well known work, Being and Time, published in 1927. Despite its dark context, Being and Time remains essential reading for engaging with the vexing challenges presented by modernity. Peter Gordon is the Amabel B. James Professor of History, Faculty Affiliate in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, and Faculty Affiliate in the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University. Peter Gordon is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a private practice in Palm Springs, CA.  His life's path progressed from his days as a youth in NYC through various careers including a brief stint as a gypsy in the New York theater world to a landscape designer in Santa Fe, NM and then on to graduate school for counseling psychology at university outside of San Francisco at 50 years young Peter's initial desire for his new career path was based on a desire to work with queer youth navigating the treacherous waters of coming out, which, as most baby boomers know, was traumatic at best, at least until Stonewall and the modern movement toward equality.  However, his plans were fouled by the advent of the internet which allowed queer youth to connect world wide, from small towns to large cities in an entirely new way, accessing a community and achieving a degree of acceptance and self-respect, thereby limiting the need for a therapist. But there was still a lot of trauma in the LGBT community; and Peter focused on working with clients to heal using a relatively new theoretical model for trauma - EMDR.*  Gradually, Peter began to understand the ultimate limitations of various existing theoretical models of recovery programs, psychotherapy and psychotropic medications**.  The idea of plant medicines being used therapeutically has caught his attention and focus.  The recent positive research regarding the therapeutic benefits of the use of psychedelics to heal trauma, help addicts and alcoholics recover, and increase a sense of spirituality and connectedness has changed the direction of his practice.  Peter's practice is now heading into the future of healing trauma at a deeper level by combining psychedelics and therapy.*EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.**Psychotropic Medications:  A psychotropic drug is a drug that affects behavior, mood, thoughts, or perception (such as antidepressants).Peter is available for consultations and can be reached at:PMGMFT@YAHOO.COMPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2022Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

R&SRNR_162 – “19 HIT SONGS THE BEATLES GAVE AWAY” Although they were only active for a little over a decade – from 1960 to 1970, the Beatles are still arguably the most influential band in rock and roll history. We previously explored this group's original recordings that were later remade into hit singles by other artists on episodes #132 and #133 of our little podcast series. But in this program, we're going to focus on the songs written by the Beatles in the 1960s and then simply handed off to other singers to perform. These were compositions that the Beatles never commercially recorded themselves or waxed later on after another act released them first. We've identified 19 of the songs that the Beatles gave away, which became hit singles for such performers as the Rolling Stones, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, Cilla Black, Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jeremy, Cream, Badfinger, and several others. Those songs are all part of the greatest rock and roll stories on record. And our resident Rockologist, Ken Deutsch, joins Radio Dave as together we tell the tales behind those tunes. Hear it all here.

Born to a British mother and Algerian father, he grew up in the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland, before moving to London and gaining a Fine Art degree from Slade School of Art. During the first UK lockdown, Lias began contributing a series of unflinching autobiographical pieces entitled Life Beyond the Neutral Zone to the online cultural hub, The Social Gathering. He is published in The New Frontier: Reflections From the Irish Border (New Island Books, 2021) - an anthology of new writing from some of Ireland's greatest contemporary authors marking the centenary of partition. His first book, Ten Thousand Apologies: Fat White Family and the Miracle of Failure, co-written with Adelle Stripe (Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile, Bloomsbury, 2019), is described by Miranda Sawyer in The Observer as “the story of a band that's always on the brink: of stardom, of madness, of brilliance, of disgrace”. Season 3; Episode 2: Freedom, Responsibility and Community with Peter GordonPeter Gordon is the Chief Investment Officer and Head of Commercial Real Estate Debt for a large asset management firm. Peter is the type of leader who instinctively forms his leadership philosophy and approach and then realizes there are a few books out there that back up those instincts. Peter's leadership analogies range from parenthood, tennis, golf, political ideologies…and through his metaphors we gain some fabulous insights.Key Takeaways from this Episode:Leadership, like parenthood, is a shift from being about you to something bigger than you· Working with people, towards a shared goal, seeing the energy they bring… the reflected glory of other people's successes, all of those things, have become an important part of what gets me up in the morning.· Leading people has helped me articulate what I think are my strengths, and to look at other people and see the strengths in them.Finding the right balance between autonomy and agency is like a tennis racket grip· If you grip a tennis racket too tightly, your swing changes, your flow changes, and your shot comes out differently. If you learn how to moderate your grip, then you get a better result out of the tennis racket.  · There's enough pressure that you feel someone is there and cares, but it's not so tight that it's asphyxiating, or changing your behavior or changing the shape of things. Bring others into the conversation· Meeting someone for the first time, observe them, see how they contribute and how they add to the whole.· Bring people in, make them feel welcome, understand where they're going to contribute.· Use all sorts of tricks, like humor, self-deprecation, teasing, anything to get people to feel recognized, and they're not just joining as ‘person number three' in the group.Psychological safety is essential· If you're not threatened, physiologically or mentally, then you do your best work. Then you're more willing to push the boundaries, say something that comes top of mind, just share.· If someone doesn't want to share, is feeling threatened, is feeling psychologically out of sorts, then clashes are more pronounced. Our natural reaction is to say, ‘That person's making me feel this way, and therefore I'm reacting to it that way', and then you get into these spirals, and it takes a lot of work to unpack. · In work, you don't give time to those relationships in the same way that you do in your personal life. That's why it's incumbent on all of us to tread a little more cautiously into work relationships.· Psychological safety applies to flexibility in your thinking and your approach to people.A well-functioning team needs a mix of people with complementary skills· I like existing in the land of the misfit toys, because it means that there's a lot of different toys there that bring something different to the mix. You don't want everyone to be producing in a certain way with a linear thought process.· Admire the skills people have that you don't have. It's about creating complements of skills to create a better whole. Help the complementary skillsets work better together.Leadership is a culmination of your life experiences · Leadership is not an on/off switch. It is something that comes from your life experiences; the culmination of things people have said to you along the way, the experiences you've had, the reactions you've received. You have to establish what kind of a leader you are which might change at different times in your life.· Is there ever a day where you're not learning? Yes, the day you walk out, and you get run over by a bus. · The learning, while it's painful, very quickly turns into satisfaction and enjoyment. The freedoms of leadership require personal responsibility· With freedom comes massive, personal responsibility. You have to show up. You have to do your bit. No one's telling you, do this, do that.· Even the most junior person in a group has the ability to lead, to say this is what I can do and I'm leading you to give me more, because I can handle it. That's leadership, too, reverse leadership. It's really important, because now the group starts to come together in a different way, which bleeds into personal responsibility. Communities create an entrepreneurial spirit · Creating an entrepreneurial spirit in large organizations is like being a parent in the crowd watching your child play a sport in middle school. Your boss is cheering you. It's enthusiastic. It's not focusing on the stuff that you're doing badly; it's focusing on the good stuff.· Communities, by definition, are not about the self. It's about how you respect and champion people, how you recognize the good work they're doing. Then, people don't want to let the community down.· Place a greater level of importance on, does it make them happy? If it makes them happy, then they will go back and get more. It is Pavlovian. You will go back and get more. Success will beget success.· Enjoy and celebrate the small victories and don't dwell on the things that go wrong, because stuff goes wrong all the time. It's the ability to be happy about other people's little things, little things that go right. Links & Resources:· The Body Keeps the Score· Forget Flexibility. Hi, everyone. Welcome to the third season of transformative leadership conversations with me, your host, Winnie da Silva. “Storytelling is our most powerful tool for changing anything in the world today.” This compelling quote, from one of my upcoming guests Holly Gordon, sums up my aspirational goal for this podcast. Sharing stories to change you, your leadership, your team, your company. As an executive coach and leadership strategist for over 20 years, I've come to know and work with some pretty incredible people. This podcast is designed to share their inspiring stories and practical ideas you can use to develop yourself as a leader, as a person. The first release for Season 3 is coming on March 1st. I'd like to give you a taste of these ten episodes you're going to love. Sarah Snyder is the Founding Director of The Rose Castle Foundation whose mission is to equip leaders with the skills, tools, and habits needed to transform conflict. My conversation with Sarah is like opening a set of Russian dolls; you encounter one story or insight just to discover another one – and another. You know she's for real when her other job is the Archbishop of Canterbury's Special Advisor for Reconciliation. Peter Gordon is the Chief Investment Officer and Head of Commercial Real Estate Debt for a large asset management firm. Peter is the type of leader who instinctively forms his leadership philosophy and approach and then realizes there are a few books out there that back up those instincts. Peter's leadership analogies range from parenthood, tennis, golf, political ideologies…and through his metaphors we gain some fabulous insights. Holly Gordon is the Chief Impact Officer for Participant Media. While she doesn't make the award-winning movies her company produces (An Inconvenient Truth, Spotlight, Green Book), Holly and her team build campaigns around these films to inspire action and change by partnering with grassroots organizations and activists on the front lines. Holly's fascinating background paired with her breadth and depth of thinking on social change, storytelling, leadership - I can't help but hope that Holly will write a book someday soon. Next up will be a conversation with both Peter AND Holly. Yes, Peter and Holly are married and in this special episode, Peter and Holly generously share some details of how their marriage has influenced their own unique leadership perspectives. Our personal relationships are so important in shaping who we are, how we think and how we approach our work. You'll love this compelling example of a relationship that is playful yet serious about ideas around leadership and more which will cause you to reflect on your own relationships and their impact on you. Cassandra Rose is a Founding Partner and DEI Practice Co-Lead at Meritarc, a human capital software company and provider of advisory services. Cassandra helps organizations fully leverage their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy and enables HR and People Leaders to connect the value of their talent with their mission. Cassandra is also a compelling speaker on the topics of benefits equity and centering the BIPOC employee journey for transformative employee engagement. Our conversation will challenge your thinking on all these topics – and more! Lindsey Saletta is the Chief Operating Officer at west-bourne, a food and lifestyle brand that began as the first zero-waste neighborhood restaurant in New York City and is now piloting conscious capitalism in the food industry. I love Lindsey's clarity on her own strengths and how those same strengths can sometimes be barriers to growth. Lindsey is that ambitious and vibrant leader you wish you could call to help you navigate your own career. So, here's your chance! Ajay Easo is the Managing Director at Accenture Interactive and Fjord. Ajay is a “leader of leaders” and has had multiple career iterations during his 21-year tenue at Accenture. Ajay is a big thinker and strategically keeps several balls in the air. But his real superpower is leading without others even realizing it. He prefers to elevate and collaborate with people rather than always having to lead from the front. Our conversation touches on his leadership and the future trends of leadership itself. Marianne Manseau is an Area Vice President at Pernod Ricard, a wine and spirits company whose ambition is to turn every social interaction into a genuine sharing experience. While Marianne's friendly spirit is immediately apparent, underneath that smile is an extremely intentional, hardworking, and ambitious woman. Marianne shares her experience learning to be vulnerable, why intention matters and how her father and three brothers helped shaped the person she is today. Gary Hamilton is a Senior Vice President and Healthcare Practice Leader for WSP which provides management and consultancy services to the built and natural environment. With 25 years of experience in designing and building healthcare facilities globally, Gary is passionate not just about his work but how he shows up as a leader and being a role model for others. Gary's flair for connecting with people and pushing himself past boundaries is inspirational. The Band of Sisters is a tribe of six women who all met when they worked at PepsiCo. I had the pleasure of interviewing three of the six sisters: Lori Marcus, Katie Lacey and Cie Nicholson. These seasoned and savvy women bring a fresh perspective on improving the lives of women in the workplace as they focus on equipping organizations to build more inclusive and productive cultures. Their book You Should Smile More: How to Dismantle Gender Bias in the Workplace will be coming out this fall. Our conversation offers a sampling on this topic with some super practical ways women and men can proactively support women at work.
