On this episode of THE COCKTAIL GURU PODCAST, Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, bar owner and restaurateur, acclaimed drinks historian and author, and a globally recognized authority on Tiki culture, tells hosts Jonathan & Jeffrey Pogash the technicolor tale of how the Los Angeles native went from writing for the screen in Hollywood to becoming the North Star of the tropical cocktail galaxy and slinging drinks in New Orleans. Brought to you by Plantation Rum, Denizen Rum, and J.P. Wiser's Canadian Whisky. THE COCKTAIL GURU PODCAST is produced by 1st Reel Entertainment and distributed by EatsDrinksTV, a service of the Center for Culinary Culture—Home of The Cocktail Collection, and is available wherever fine podcasts can be heard. The Center for Culinary Culture—Telling the Story of Food & Drink…One Taste at a Time. GUEST BIO One of Imbibe's “25 Most Influential Cocktail Personalities of the Past Century,” Jeff “Beachbum” Berry is the author of seven books on vintage tropical drinks, which published for the first time anywhere the lost recipes of Tiki's golden age—from the original Zombie, Jet Pilot, and Pearl Diver to the Navy Grog, Saturn, Three Dots & A Dash, and many others. Esquire calls Jeff “one of the instigators of the cocktail revolution” and Food & Wine “one of the world's leading rum experts,” while The New York Times cites him as “the Indiana Jones of Tiki drinks” and The Los Angeles Times as “A hybrid of street-smart gumshoe, anthropologist, and mixologist.” Jeff's been featured on the Travel Channel's “Food Paradise” TV series, The Discovery Channel, PBS Television, and National Public Radio; he's also been profiled in The Washington Post, USA Today, The New York Times, and Wine Enthusiast. Jeff's original cocktail recipes have been printed in publications around the world, from Bon Appétit and The Huffington Post to over 20 international recipe books, including the venerable Mr. Boston Official Bartender's Guide. And now Jeff's drinks are being served at his restaurant in New Orleans, Beachbum Berry's Latitude 29, which has won critical acclaim in Esquire, Playboy, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Houston Chronicle, GQ, Travel + Leisure, Town & Country, Southern Living, New Orleans, and the Food Network. With Martin Doudoroff, Jeff co-created Total Tiki for iPad and iPhone, a drink recipe app which Macworld calls “beautifully rendered and, thanks to Berry's tireless reporting, impeccably sourced.” Jeff's also co-created a line of Tiki barware with Cocktail Kingdom, which Imbibehails as “especially notable because it revives old styles of essential glassware that were previously almost impossible to find.” While this is all way too much work for a bum, Jeff also contributed 29 entries to The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails and lectures about tropical drinks across the US, Europe, and Latin America. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecocktailgurupodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecocktailgurupodcast/support

Chambers U.S. Army (Ret) have provided ongoing leadership and creative consulting for several groundbreaking Military Veteran support programs including Syracuse University's renowned - Institute For Veterans & Military Families (IVMF). Following eleven tours and over 150 performances for deployed Service members in Iraq and Afghanistan, Michael Peterson received the prestigious Spirit Of Hope medal from the U.S.O. and the U.S. Army. This honor is given annually to individuals whose selfless service as entertainers perpetuates the legacy of the late Bob Hope. Recorded July 1, 2021 Episode Sponsored by: Surfshark and Passport America. From WIKIPEDIA: Michael James Peterson (born August 7, 1959) is an American country music artist. He made his debut on the country music scene in 1997 with his self-titled debut album, which produced five Top 40 hits on Billboards Hot Country Singles & Tracks, including the Number One hit "From Here to Eternity". Peterson's second album, 1999's Being Human, produced two more chart singles, and a third album, 2004's Modern Man, was issued only in Europe. Peterson also made a cameo appearance on an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. After attending high school at Richland High School in Richland, WA, Peterson later earned a football scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University, where he won a national championship. One of his teammates, Brad Westering, was also working as a producer for Deniece Williams at the time. Through Westering, Peterson got the opportunity to write songs for Williams, as well as gospel headliners The Imperials. This all led to the production of Peterson's first release, "Michael Peterson", a collection of contemporary Christian songs, on Sparrow Records in 1986. Eventually, Peterson traveled to Nashville, Tennessee where he started working as a professional songwriter, collaborating with other writers such as Josh Leo and Robert Ellis Orrall. Orrall suggested that Peterson sign to a recording contract, and in December 1996, Peterson was signed to Reprise Records, a division of the Warner Music Group. His debut single, "Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie", was released that year, charting at No. 3 on the Billboard country charts and No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the lead-off single to Peterson's self-titled debut album (not to be confused with the Christian album of the same name from 1986), which also produced four more chart singles. The second one, "From Here to Eternity", became Peterson's first and only Number One hit, while "Too Good to Be True" reached No. 8. Following it were "When the Bartender Cries" at No. 37 and "By the Book" at No. 19. The album was certified gold by the RIAA for shipping 500,000 copies in the U.S. Also in 1997, Peterson was named Male Artist of the Year by Billboard. In 1998, Peterson appeared on Jenny Simpson's 1998 self-titled album, singing duet vocals on "Grow Young with You". Peterson made a guest appearance on a 1998 episode of Walker, Texas Ranger called "Eyes of a Ranger." Peterson released his second album, Being Human, in 1999.[3] Its lead-off single, "Somethin' 'bout a Sunday", failed to reach top 40, and "Sure Feels Real Good" peaked at No. 39. Also in 1999, Peterson co-wrote the title track to Travis Tritt's album No More Looking over My Shoulder, which was released as a single. After a Super Hits album for the label, Peterson exited Warner Music Group. After his departure from Warner, Peterson signed to Monument Records Nashville. His third studio album, Modern Man, was to have been released in 2002 for the label. Although its title track and "Lesson in Goodbye" both entered the country charts (with the former being the highest-debuting single of his career), the album itself was not issued in the US due to a restructuring of the label's parent company. AGR, a European record label, acquired the album and issued it in Europe in 2004. Six singles were released from it in Europe, including Peterson's own rendition of "No More Looking over My Shoulder." Also included on the album was the track "Right About Now", which Ty Herndon later released from his 2007 album of the same name. Peterson's songs have been covered by a number of artists. Though his last charting song was in 2002, he continues to release albums and performs at military benefits. https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay

Thank you so much! https://www.patreon.com/theplayerswebcast It was so much fun to talk with Tom Brechtlein. He has been one of my favorite musicians / drummers since I first saw him with Chick Corea in 1980. In this conversation, Tom shares about a multitude of topics including his time with Chick Corea (and how he met Chick), Wayne Shorter, Kenny Loggins, and others. Be sure to visit Tom's website at: https://www.tombrechtlein.com Tom Brechtlein grew up in East Meadow, Long Island and gravitated to drums after listening to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In junior high, his attention turned to big band jazz, and he became attracted to the music of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. His investigation of jazz led him to Dave Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello and then to modern giants like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams as well as legends like Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. "When I was 18," he recalls, "I saw Chick Corea's Return To Forever on PBS Television; and I remember sitting there thinking, ' I'm going to play with that guy someday.'" Two years later, in 1978, he auditioned with Corea and got the gig. He remained in the band till 1983, at which point he joined Wayne Shorter's band. There followed extensive road work with guitarist Al Di Meola and violinist Jean Luc Ponty before Tom finally hooked up with Robben Ford in 1986.

In this moment of global crisis, Steve Audette ACE and the team at PBS Television's Frontline are in “all hands on deck” mode to tackle the unfolding tale of the coronavirus pandemic; using remote post-production workflows never tried before to turn around a film, at the level of quality Frontline demands, in just one month. After cutting over 175 episodes (and counting) of Frontline, Steve has learned a thing or two about crafting compelling documentary films that illuminate audiences and leave them asking questions about not only what they just witnessed, but about the world around them as well. This time, as the featured guest on the Rough Cut podcast, Steve gives you the answers. Mr. Audette begins by bringing us back to the mid-nineties to talk about joining Frontline and leading the charge into digital non-linear editing from tape and how he was received by the veteran editorial staff. "I felt like they knew more than me in so many ways in terms of how to create and craft a story. I was, at that time, providing technical assistance rather than artistic assistance. So there was a real flow back and forth in terms of information and experience that really helped me later as an editor. It allowed me to look at a lot of people's timelines, and I got a sense of how these very experienced, very talented storytellers were building and structuring the story. And when I saw things that made sense to me, I adopted them instantly, and still do that to this day." From there Steve details both the story development process and the incredible amounts of material and investigation involved in producing a Frontline film; and ultimately, the editorial skills that are required to make this all happen in a constantly evolving narrative under a very tight schedule. Dr. Robert Rohm had an experience I think many of us have faced at some point in time. Tim Ryan arrived in Nashville from Montana with not much more than with his wife by his side, and guitar in hand. He literally didn't know a soul, but within the first day in Music City had a major record deal. Upon releasing his debut album, the deal fell through, but then got picked up by another major label... and then another. As an artist, his success rate wasn't what he had imagined it being, and the harsh reality of a record deal (or lack thereof) set in. But then Tim met the likes of such songwriters as Phil Vasser, and soon went on a musical journey of writing a #1 hit song at radio, which provided him the opportunity to fulfill his new dream, to write a symphony titled "My Grandpa's Fiddle". Creating, developing and financing the entire project himself, it went on to become one of the most successful programs on PBS Television across the United States. Tune in as Tim provides his insight into what it still takes to make it in the music business as an artist and a songwriter, and helps you understand that your first dream might just not be the final path you take. A 16-year-old boy from a well-to-do Fort Worth family commits a quadruple vehicular homicide. His attorneys will argue that his overprivileged upbringing resulted in him not knowing how to discern right from wrong. The term "affluenza" was coined to describe defendants like Ethan Couch - wealthy, spoiled and held unaccountable for their bad behavior. I'll also describe how this same defense was used in 1924 to defend the wealthy teenaged murderers Leopold and Loeb. #LeopoldandLoeb #CrimeoftheCentury #EthanCouch #Affluenza Several resources were used in the research for this episode including: Manny Fernandez, Richard Perez-Pena and Azam Ahmed, The New York Times, "Ethan Couch, 'Affluenza' Teenager, Had Last Party Before Fleeing," Dec 29, 2015.
