We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. ABOUT JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWISWith 26 Billboard #1 R&B hits and 16 Billboard #1 pop hits to their credit, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are perhaps the most influential and successful songwriting and production duo in modern music history. With a total of 41 Top 10 hits in the US, Jimmy and Terry were named ASCAP Songwriters of the Year a record-breaking nine times. They are perhaps best known for their work with Janet Jackson, beginning with the Control album, which earned the duo a Grammy for Producer of the Year. Between 1986 and 1994 they scored thirteen #1 songs with Janet on either the R&B or pop chart, including “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” “Control,” “Let's Wait Awhile,” “Miss You Much,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Escapade” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” “That's the Way Love Goes,” “Any Time, Any Place,” and “Again,” which earned Jimmy, Terry, and Janet an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Jimmy and Terry got their start as musicians with Morris Day and the Time, the Prince-produced band whose biggest hit was the Jam and Lewis-penned “Jerk Out.” They made the transition to a successful songwriting and production team working with the S.O.S. band, which landed a #2 R&B hit with “Just Be Good to Me.” From there, they made their mark on pop and R&B hits for decades to come. In addition to their work with Jackson, the duo wrote and produced the #1 pop singles “Human” by Human League, “Romantic” by Karyn White, “Thank God I Found You” by Mariah Carey, and the Boyz II Men singles “On Bended Knee” and “4 Seasons of Loneliness.” Additional R&B chart toppers include “Encore” by Cheryl Lynn, “Fake” by Alexander O'Neal, “Everything I Miss at Home” by Cherelle, “Sensitivity” by Ralph Tresvant, and the Johnny Gill singles “Rub You the Right Way” and “Wrap My Body Tight.” Other highlights from their catalog include New Edition's “If It Isn't Love” and “I'm Still in Love With You,” “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige, Robert Palmer's hit pop cover of their Cherelle single “I Didn't Mean to Turn You On,” and recordings by Gladys Knight & The Pips, Barry White, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Usher, Spice Girls, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Sting, Elton John, Beyonce, Rihanna, Rod Stewart, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, and many others.Always versatile, the duo has earned Grammy awards for Best R&B Album for Chaka Kahn's Funk This, Best Gospel Song for Yolanda Adams' “Be Blessed,” and Best Dance Recording for Janet Jackson's #1 pop and R&B hit “All For You.” Additional Jackson hits that were written and produced with Jam and Lewis include the Janet and Michael Jackson hit “Scream” and the #1 singles “Together Again,” “I Get Lonely,” “Doesn't Really Matter,” and the Nelly duet “Call On Me.”In total the team has earned over 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond album certifications from the RIAA, have received more Producer of the Year Grammy nominations than anyone in history, earned the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a success with their debut album, and continued to build a fan base when they opened for The Who on their Quadrophenia tour. Many of the songs on their debut album were staples of their concerts in Jacksonville, Florida, where they had built their style over the years since the 60's. Therefore it was not a sure thing that they would be able to sustain their success over time. Those concerns were put to rest when they released their second album.Second Helping, a southern colloquialism for getting more of the same thing at the dinner table, cemented Lynyrd Skynyrd as the flag bearer for the Southern Rock genre. At a time when a number of British artists - most notably the Rolling Stones - were digging into the rock and blues music of the American South, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the real thing. They rode the power of their triple guitar set and the wit of Ronnie Van Zandt's lyrics to a commercial success, with the album going to number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and certified as gold by September 1974. While contemporary critics were more lukewarm, those reviews have been revised way upward over time. Second Helping also contains the biggest hit of the group as well, the Southern anthem "Sweet Home Alabama."Lynyrd Skynyrd would go on to produce many more hit songs and records in the southern rock genre before tragedy took front man Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines in October 1977. But Second Helping is the album that solidified their standing as an internationally successful band.Wayne takes us through this album for this week's podcast, and Brian Dickhute joins us in Bruce's absence. The Needle and the SpoonThis song would not be the only anti-drug track in the Skynyrd discography. The lyrics describe a man coming out of rehab, and makes use of a wah wah pedal effect that was not common to most of Skynyrd's music, but fit with the heroin subject of the song. Swamp MusicAlthough not released as a single, this song got plenty of air play on FM radio, as did most of the tracks on this album. This fast -paced track describes life in the Florida swamps. The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were well acquainted with outdoor life, fishing for catfish, hunting, and other "redneck" activities.Sweet Home AlabamaEveryone knows this anthem of Southern rock. This song was written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man," in which the band felt like the entire Southern United States was blamed for slavery. Between the hook of the leading riff and the catchy lyrics, this song has become a staple of classic rock. This is Skynyrd's only top 10 hit, as it went to number 8 on the US charts. Interestingly, none of the band members are from Alabama.Don't Ask Me No QuestionsGary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zandt wrote this song during a fishing trip. Many think this is about a relationship, but it was a message to the record managers who were apathetic towards the band during the early days, but who turned demanding after they were a success. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Main theme from the television series, "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."In this sitcom spin-off from "The Andy Griffith Show," Jim Nabors plays the lovable but naive Gomer Pyle, now enlisted into the Marine Corp. Frank Sutton, who played Sergent Carter in this series, passed away in June 1974. STAFF PICKS:Help Me by Joni MitchellRob starts the staff picks with a single from Mitchell's sixth studio album, "Court and Spark." This track is Mitchell's biggest single, and her only song to crack the top 10 in the US, going to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics describe a singer who knows she is falling for the wrong man, but is either powerless to stop it or doesn't want to call things off.Dancing Machine by the Jackson 5Brian brings us a song that hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a multi-year dry spell. The Jackson 5 appeared on "Soul Train" performing this song, and Michael Jackson introduced the world to "the robot" dance routine. The Jackson 5 had a Saturday morning cartoon which kept the group in the public conscious.Waterloo by ABBALynch features the song that made ABBA a household name when the Swedish group won the 1974 Eurovision Song contest singing this tune. The lyrics compare falling in love to Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The name "ABBA" comes from the first letter of each of the singers' names.Tell Me Something Good by RufusWayne presents a funky song from a group featuring Chaka Kahn as lead vocalist. Rufus is a one-hit wonder, with this song peaking at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Stevie Wonder wrote this song about a woman looking for a deeper relationship, not just a one night stand. It was the first hit song that utilized the vocoder. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Dance with the Devil by Cozy PowellWe close out with a drum instrumental based on Jimi Hendrix' "Third Stone from the Sun." This album called "The Griffith Park Collection" is an all-star date nominally led by drum master Lenny White. The others involved are Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Chick Corea on piano, Stanley Clarke on acoustic bass. They had completed an album in Los Angeles with the great singer Chaka Kahn and producer Bruce Lundvall got the bright idea to record an instrumental album with this stellar band. Lenny White was the nominal leader and this great album was finished in two sessions. The tunes usually were done with a few exceptions in one or two takes. Everything gelled and we have a latter day classic done in 1980.It is overlooked by some fans and shouldn't be so listen up tonight and hear this fine document by these masters. Enjoy!
A number of bands seem to turn a corner with their third album, and Master of Puppets is no exception. Metallica's third album would achieve both critical and commercial success, crossing out of the new thrash metal sub-genre of hard rock to achieve multi-platinum recognition. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield collaborated with drummer Lars Ulrich as the principal songwriters, creating riffs that were assembled and reassembled over time until they formed a song. The band would then be called in to create a tile and topic for the song, at which point Hetfield would create the lyrics.Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Although glam metal was on the rise, the band avoided the over-produced, synth-laden sound popular in the era, and stuck to their signature thrash metal sound with political lyrics. The resulting album would consolidate the thrash metal scene, and bring the sound into a more mainstream audience.Unfortunately, the album would also be the last one for which bassist Cliff Burton would be featured. Burton died in September 1986 while the band was on tour in Sweden, and their bus was involved in an accident.Metallica would become a huge group from the late 80's onward, and this album shows the strength of the group in those years when they were just coming into the consciousness of the commercial world.Lynch brings us this highly influential thrash metal album. Fans of the Show Julie Doran and son Zack join us in Wayne's absence for today's podcast. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)The song that concludes side 1 of the album was inspired by Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." The lyrics portray the thoughts of a mental patient incorrectly institutionalized in an asylum. The track starts slow and picks up steam as it goes. BatteryThis title could be a reflection of the charge of assault and battery, or it could be inspired by the military hardware of an artillery battery. There is also a connection to the original San Francisco thrash scene, centered on the Old Waldorf club on Battery Street. Control of violent urges is a connection that runs through the piece regardless of the original inspiration.Master of PuppetsCocaine addiction is the master of puppets referenced in this title track. Hetfield had friends experiencing drug addiction, and wrote this track from the perspective of the drug itself, taking over the lives of people. This will be a familiar song to fans of "Stranger Things." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Loved By the Sun by Jon Anderson and Tangerine Dream (from the motion picture “Legend”)This fantasy film starring Tom Cruise and Mia Sara was in the theaters at this time. STAFF PICKS:Your Wildest Dreams by the Moody BluesRob starts off the staff picks with a song that singer and guitarist Justin Heyward wrote while thinking back on his first love. It hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song the biggest commercial success for the Moody Blues since "Knights in White Satin."Mothers Talk by Tears for FearsBruce's staff pick was inspired by a mom telling her kids that when they make faces, they will freeze that way. It is also inspired by an anti-nuclear cartoon called "When the Wind Blows" by Raymond Briggs. The song was written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley, and first performed in 1983. It went to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kiss by Prince & the RevolutionJulie features a chart topping hit and lead single from Prince's eighth studio album, "Parade." The song is more acoustic and stripped down than prior Prince hits, and Warner Bros. didn't want to release it as a single. However, Prince insisted on both its inclusion on the album and its release as a single.Addicted to Love by Robert PalmerLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that may be more famous for its video featuring models pretending to play the instruments. Palmer originally wanted to sing this song as a duet with Chaka Kahn, but was prevented from doing so by legal issues. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Songbird by Kenny G.You just can't go wrong with a sax as we close out today's podcast. Frizz and Bob revisit a single malt and talk about the world of writing and arranging jazz music, the infamous Buddy Rich tapes, Barry Manilow's jingle writing chops, and Chaka Kahn's mad skills on a basketball court with legendary jazz composer, John LaBarbera.
I wondered how it was possible for Passover and Easter to occur without celebrating it. Where did the time go? It wasn't until I put this episode together that I realized that an Easter miracle had transpired for me, during the time many were celebrating these two holidays. At one point the lyrics to Chaka Kahn's "Through the Fire" came to mind but I heard them differently this time. When it gets to the chorus, I thought about how the lyrics described how I was feeling towards my Savior coming through my own "fire." I found it ironic how this fire felt like the "Refiner's fire." Nevertheless, these lyrics seemed to perfectly express how I felt about it... "Through the fire, To the limit, to the wall For a chance to be with you I'd gladly risk it all Through the fire Through whatever come what may For a chance at loving you I'd take it all the way Right down to the wire Even through the fire" This episode is probably the most raw, personal episode I've recorded and shared. It certainly is a record of the most profound healing I've ever experienced to date and the experience I share is nothing short of life-altering - a true benchmark - and an experience I will never forget! I'm not sure why Easter is a time I seem to experience incredible miracles, but it doesn't seem coincidental. Each miracle in my life that has happened around Easter time reminds me that our Savior lives on, that He loves us and is in the details of our lives, and that He is the reason we celebrate Easter and/or Passover. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/foodiction/message
Snuffy Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson There are no accidents. House stand-in as he so aptly named hisslef, Emmy-Winning Composer, Snuffy Walden, was just what the doctor ordered. Live from the dining room, with Rufus for the most part chillin' between us, Snuffy got down, got real, letting us in as he seamlessly weaved through music, alcoholism, geographics, hitting big, breaking bad, highs, lows, getting sober, switching gears, success beyond his imaginings, the pandemic abyss, to slowly stepping back out amidst life's challenges. From piano to trombone, finding guitar, playing with BJ Thomas at 14 and strip clubs at 17, DJing, to living in a park with a roadie, Aphrodite in Denver to fronting Stray Dog, rocking like hell, and opening for Emerson, Lake & Palmer around the world, a near-miss with me in '74, drinking and debauchery, recording Songs in The Key of Life with Stevie Wonder, earning a platinum record, being in the passenger seat when Stevie drove––oh yes, he did; playing with Dave Mason at the peak, Chaka Kahn when she was breaking I Feel For You, touring with Eric Burdon and having an epiphany, thanks to longtime friend and bandmate, Michael Ruff, which would change, and save, his life. With all his success before, a few years later, without experience or training, he scored Thirty Something, then The Wonder Years, both Emmy nominees their first year, then meeting Sorkin and doing Sports Night, and then The West Wing, where he won that Emmy with his iconic main title, and then a dozen other Emmy nominations and 51 BMI Awards, representing over a hundred other shows… then the pandemic slowdown to almost shut down, and a recent rebirth doing what he loves and loving what he's doing, committed to turning up the joy in the monitors, because of and in spite of recent news. Snuffy's humility, humanity, and heart soar in his words and music. His dedication to being of service, hIs talent, and his sweetness, are ongoing inspirations to me and countless others. I neglected to say Happy Passover. Historically I've been a second-nighter, and this year is no exception. Tomorrow, Snuffy will be attending his first Seder. Hide the Manischewitz. From both of us. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with John HallABOUT JOHN HALL:John Hall is a musician, songwriter, community activist, founder of the band Orleans, and former US Congressman. After forming the group Kangaroo, which shared house band duties with Bruce Springsteen's group The Castilles at Greenwich Village's legendary Café Wha, Hall worked extensively as a sideman. He toured and/or recorded as a guitarist with Seals & Crofts, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, Carly Simon, Jackson Brown, and others, but established himself as a songwriter when he and then-wife Johanna penned “Half Moon” on Janis Joplin's Pearl album. After John formed the group Orleans, he and Johanna continued to find success as songwriters with the band's hit singles “Dance with Me” and “Still the One.” The following decade, John became a chart-topping country writer when he co-wrote Steve Wariner's #1 single “You Can Dream of Me.” He's known for co-founding the organization Musicians United for Safe Energy with Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt, and Graham Nash. John helped organize the legendary 1979 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden, and his song “Power” became the anthem for the event. In 2006, John was elected to the US House of Representatives, representing New York's 19th District. After serving two terms, he returned to making music. John's songs have been covered by Millie Jackson, Chaka Kahn, Ricky Skaggs, Taj Mahal, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Levon Helm, Bobby McFerrin, Bonnie Raitt, Chet Atkins, New Grass Revival, Jose Feliciano, Bill Anderson, The Oak Ridge Boys, Patty Loveless, and more. There are enough people out there who yearn for the arcane, the odd, the unsuccessful, the strange, and the historically overlooked to justify 200 podcast episodes of D-Sides, Orphans, and Oddities. This makes me happy, and the topics are inexhaustible. From the strange singles of Freddie Cannon and Lou Christie to the occasionally wonderful singles of Les Humphries Singers, Doris, Os Mutantes, to the strange paths to fame like The American Breed ("Bend Me Shape Me") evolving into Rufus, and then Chaka Kahn, and then "I Feel For You", her biggest hit, written by Prince, but the Kahn version was actually the 4th release and, had Patrice Rushen opted to try it (she turned it down), the 5th. A Prince song with Stevie Wonder playing harmonica over his own voice being sampled. To me, pop music is styles and the biggest records tend to be styles smooshed together. People like dangerous white music and safe black music. People like rap, but with a melodic vocal hook. While the Bee Gees were not a disco group, the Saturday Night Fever movie was a perfect petri dish. Combine Travolta's white-hot star power with the zeitgeist of Disco and the very odd recordings the Bee Gees were doing at that time. It was the success and the playing it safe in the movie's wake that doomed them. The Beatles were preternaturally gifted with a work ethic that would kill the musicians of today. But their fame was also born of withering luck. A producer and a manager (and record company) that didn't really know what they were supposed to do with these four tough guys. None of them tried to make The Beatles pick a lead singer, so, like their live act, all four would do it. Because they had the shocking temerity to say "Nope, we're not doing that song...", it was like saying to someone with a gun In your face, "Go ahead. We've come this far. You don't know WHAT we've seen. We see through you, over and over. In Germany. In Sweden. In Wales. We never said 'no' to a gig, no matter how much driving or begging or lack of sleep, and if the Reeperbahn couldn't stop us, what makes you think YOU will?" And their genuine love of Black music somehow broke the barriers for generations of singers, players, etc. Imagine that moment. You're in The Beatles, you've struggled and burned the roads up and played innumerable gigs, and sat, nose to nose, creating songs in your room that people would be singing and playing for 60 years hence. But now, the sessions begin, and the man in the tie wants you to record a "ringer". And you try it, but it doesn't really do anything. It's ok. But you have to decide. Play the game? Or risk this dude's red pen. Or show up with something better. And the guy with the tie has been through some shit as well. And he's tired of being relegated to 2nd string and he resents being put in a place where these four punks dare question his choice. Do better. I'm tired of this shit. And "Please Please Me" is as black a record as anything any band from England before them had tried. And that little phrase can be attributed to everything they tried after that. Because they proved it, in that ONE shot across the bow that would resonate for what will be eons, that your old choices for ringers, publishing company favors, Brill building production lines, plug-and-play Motown stuff, etc., were going to either fade or have to adapt. I stop my show pretty much at 1980 because that's when drum machines and synths became songwriting devices. I never liked Joy Division. I just don't get it. At that point, and with exceptions, sure, drum programming and synth programming made songwriting easy. That didn't make the songs any better. Just easier to make. Someone else can do that show. Anyhow, this is to say thank you to all the folks that have listened and downloaded. THIS show is me delivering a preamble and then playing 4 hours of music from past shows that I really like. Let's call this "Part 1" because the show, as I originally tried to put it together, lasted 10+ hours. So consider this show when you're on a long drive, doing work, making love to your woman, or man, or both, or none. So...... This is the setlist, but they're not all ‘good songs'. Some are meant to show you the arcane nature of what I find most enjoyable. Song-poems (“The Beatle Boys”), artists coping with the end of their heyday (Gary Glitter) and ill-prepared for life after that, or artists way before they found their niche (The Gap Band). And, of course, groups I love like Rose Tattoo, The Free Design, and SAHB. Leo's Sunshipp - Give Me The Sunshine (1978) The Free Design - My Very Own Angel (1969) GLS United - Rapper's Deutsch (1980) Samples “Rapper's Delight”, which samples “Good Times” by Chic, “Here Comes That Sound Again” by Love De-Luxe with Hawkin's Discophonia (which i played on one of my previous shows), and a quote from the movie Five on the Black Hand Side, specifically, a scene in the barbershop that predated the advent of Rudy Ray Moore' Dolemite character by 2 years. Louis Armstrong - The Creator Has a Master Plan (1970) w/ Leon Thomas Rick Wakeman - I'm So Straight, I'm a Weirdo (1980) I just like playing this awful oddity from the keyboard player from Yes. This record defies description. But if you see the video on Youtube, look for a young Boy George. James Last - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) (1971) From the album Voodoo-Party. Billy Preston - My Sweet Lord (1970) One of two albums he released on Apple Records. Rod Rogers (really, Rod Keith) and the Swinging Strings - The Beatle Boys (196?) The Gap Band - Magician's Holiday (1974) Gary Glitter - A Little Boogie Woogie in the Back of My Mind (1977) The Free Design - There Is A Song (1972) I will never stop praising this wonderful group. Stuart Damon - Eros (1970) Dr. Alan Quartermaine from General Hospital had a brief singing career. The Millennium - There Is Nothing More To Say (1968) Lou Christie lifted this wonderful melody for his own “Canterbury Road" later that year. From the film “Till [sic] Kingtom Comes”. XTC- Across This Antheap (1987) I never tire of this amazing track. It's my show. Aerosmith -Nobody's Fault (1976) I like Aerosmith's '70s albums very much. They were all loaded with hidden gems, and to me, “Nobody's Fault” was just the most succinct example of a band that made consistently good/great albums. Frank Zappa - Andy (1980) A great, difficult tune (you try it with your band.) Recorded live in Buffalo. Annette Peacock - The Succubus (1979) The Red Shadow - Anything Good (1975) Carpenters - B'wana She No Home (1977) Bruford - Back To The Beginning (1978) Frank Sinatra - Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown (1974) Barry McGuire & The Doctor - South Of The Border (1970) I love this song. We are on the eve of destruction indeed. Might as well… Beach Boys - Rollin' Up To Heaven (1972?) This is so insane, and especially from a major artist, that it defies categorization. Rose Tattoo - We Can't Be Beaten (1982) Ferocious. Billy (Crash) Craddock - Knock Three Times (1971) Led Zeppelin - Black Dog (1972) Unbelievable live version from “How The West Was Won”. Listen to those bass drum tricks. Especially during the coda. I wish Robert Plant never smoked. A normal drummer would go crazy with fills. Bonham put them where they belonged, no more. He showed amazing restraint at times. You wouldn't think so, but he was a grooving monster above all else. Black Oak Arkansas - Hot And Nasty (1971) Michael (Mick) Jackson - Blame It On The Boogie (1978) Bob & Earl - Harlem Shuffle (1969) The Kids From The Brady Bunch - Candy (Sugar Shoppe) (1972) So inappropriate that I wonder what the record company/TV show producers were thinking. Good song and a nice performance by the studio band. Bread - Everything I Own (1972) Carla Bley - Rawalpindi Blues (1972) Nick Mason - Do Ya? (1980) Liberace - Say Ciao (1970) Liberace puts it into words and music..."Never Say Goodbye, Say Ciao"...capturing the mood of Ciao Liqueur...the imported new liqueur with the elusive new taste. I can't find another song that Liberace wrote himself. Crack The Sky - Surf City (Here Come The Sharks) (1975) Les Humphries Singers - Dancing Queen (1976) You can still hear Jimmy Bilsbury's straining, smoky tenor in the choruses. “Having the time of your life…” Poor guy. Eddie Kendricks - Me 'N Rock 'N Roll Are Here To Stay (1974) Denny Greene - The Great Escape (1981) Ex-Sha Na Na member trying to break type like J Jocko tried a few years before. I love this. This is a dance mix of the original he did in 1977. Dennis Wilson - River Song (1977) Doris - Did You Give The World Some Love Today, Baby? (1970) No one knows who Doris is. I'd rather listen to her and this crazy Swedish band for a year before I ever give any time to Janis Joplin. Rotary Connection - Didn't Want To Have To Do It (1967) Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol (1972) This is a wonderful remix of the original fluke hit. The Move - Do Ya (different version) (1971) Jeff Lynne - Doin' That Crazy Thing (1977) Rick Nelson - Don't Blame It On Your Wife (1968) Sha Na Na Anti-Drug PSA (197?) Doris - Beatmaker (1970) Dschinghis Khan - Rocking Son Of Dschinghis Khan (1979) Edith Head Fashion Prescription Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Trilogy (1973) Utopia - Eternal Love (1976) Alix Dobkin - View Form Gay Head (1973) Fats Domino - Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey (1968) John Farrar - Falling (1980) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Feelin' Blue (1969) Laverne and Shirley - Five Years On (1976) Written by Michael McKean. His story is too long for me to get into. For POACA he was "Lenny" of Lenny and Squiggy. Or he was David St. Hubbins in Spinal Tap. Or he was Saul Goodman's brother in Better Call Saul. Genesis - Fly On A Windshield/Broadway Melody of 1974 (1974) Fonzie Impressionist Track (Aaaaay, Cool, Nerd, Sit On It) (1976) One of the weirdest things in my collection. Why does it exist? And then it repeats in reverse!!

Seems like we've been talking about the Minneapolis music scene an awful lot lately. First with Dave Pirner. Then last week with Ryan. And now? A true Minneapolis legend: Michael Bland. Since the beginning of his professional career —when he was drafted into Prince's New Power Generation— Michael has been one of the most sought after drummers in popular music. He's played with Chaka Kahn, Maxwell, Paul Westerberg, and since 2004 he's been the guy in Soul Asylum. On this episode we talk to Michael about church, the fraternity of music, classic rock's Midwestern dominance, George Floyd, “Can't Hardly Wait”, Prince (duh!), and how much he looooves touring with Local H. This is a good one, people! Local H on tour: http://www.localh.com/tour.html Companion Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2qaMu7D7hJNFRbiHdHWJpt?si=3ce973ea0c184a37
Episode 5: In today's episode, Molley and Chad invite their friends Katie and Brian to the studio. We're going to discuss the all-important topic of Boat Music! What type of music should you consider taking along for your day or weekend on the lake? Let's find out. Chad begins by basing the music on the activities planned for that particular outing. Wake boarding and similar activities call for something more high-energy. An evening cruise might call for something more mellow. Everyone has a song they love. Katie recommends classic rock for a day out on the lake. Brian likes newer music. Molley prefers to avoid slow music, although there's always an exception when you're out looking for driftwood. The group agrees that having a good stereo system on your boat is important. However, if that's not the case, you can always take along a really good Bluetooth speaker to blast your tunes. Molley recommends having a wide-variety of music and artists. Older music and classic rock are usually good if kids are around, because the language is safer. In fact, she used to create different CDs for lake weekends, depending upon the group. Now, everyone has playlists that do the same. Don't miss the discussion about Chaka Kahn. Do you agree or disagree? One of Katie's all-time favorites for the lake is Paul Simon's Queen of Corona (a.k.a. Me and Julio Down by the School Yard). She also likes a cover of Dixieland Delight by Nappy Roots. Music can become a tradition for your outings. Molley's dad influenced some of the selections she and Chad have. Around sunset, they like to breakout Hello Darlin' by Conway Twitty. Chad introduces a song he found on many of the boating playlists. It's Waves by Mr. Probz. It's pretty good. Click the link to give it a shot. Do You Have a Go-To Song You Have to Hear on the Water? Chad: He says he'll sing along with all of yours. Molley: Atomic Dog Brian: Anything by Kings of Leon Katie: It's got to include something by CCR They agree Yacht Rock and songs from Bob Marley work well. Music Tip Chad recommends downloading at least 1 playlist with 100 songs or more. If your cell phone loses its signal in the middle of the lake or your radio doesn't pick up multiple stations, you'll still have music to play. Introducing New Music The group agrees that finding new covers of older songs can make for a fun playlist. Some of them are even better that the originals. Music Etiquette Katie comments that if multiple boats pull into a cove, it's a good idea to take turns listening to the various playlists from each of the boats. Don't try to blow everyone else out or dominate it. Remember, you're out there to have a good time. Part of the adventure is having the right tunes for the day. Find some that work for you and create memories that you'll take home with you. The right songs will take you back to those outings and get you thinking about your next trip, so have fun with it We'll leave you today with one of Katie's recommendation, Redneck Yacht Club by Craig Morgan. That's a wrap for this episode. I hope you found it helpful, insightful and maybe a little entertaining. Thanks for Listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider sharing it with your friends. We hope to see you out there soon. Until next time, here's to warm weather and calm waters! Don't forget to subscribe!
