Live at the Bop Stop

It's Jazz, it just doesn't sound like it. Or, at least, that's what Oz Noy will tell you. I'm not so sure I agree with that, but we're delighted to have the chance to let you be the judge. Since 1996, Oz Noy has regularly toured in trio and quartets with more musicians than we have time to list here. Although some of us will remember Will Lee and Anton Fig. This sold out show was the first of two shows in support of his tenth release Triple Play. Featuring Oz Noy on Guitar, Dennis Chambers on Drums and Jimmy Haslip on Bass, and from a September 30th, 2023 performance it's the Oz Noy Trio – Live at the Bop Stop.

It might seem funny, then, to consider EVH solos that might require more attention. But your 100 Guitarists hosts have their picks of solos that they feel merit a little discussion. Some of these are deep cuts—get ready for some instrumental bonus tracks and Van Halen III mentions—and some are among the biggest radio hits of their time. Just because their hits, though, doesn't mean we don't have more to add to the conversation. We can't cover everything EVH—Jason has already tried while producing the Runnin' With the Dweezil podcuast. But we cover as much as we can in our longest episode yet. This episode of Dipped In Tone features Rhett flying solo with veteran jazz guitarist Oz Noy. Born in Israel, Noy started gigging at age 13, and 37 years later, he's still going strong as a celebrated live musician—including a 17-year run at New York City club The Bitter End.Noy explains that he grew up with a foot in both jazz and rock music worlds. The former taught him intricate playing, while the latter schooled him on tone and sound. “I was playing heavy metal on one hand,” he says. “On the other, I had a hollowbody guitar and I was playing bebop.” When he moved to New York, he was “shellshocked” by how advanced and impressive the jazz music scene was. Noy played in a trio, so to fill out his sonic palette, he began leaning on effects as “almost another instrument.” Not all of it has been intentional—he found a signature sound thanks to a happy accident with a tremolo pedal while gigging in Japan. While he still loves old, loud Marshalls, Noy says Two-Rock amplifiers have radically changed his approach, and he even uses Fender combos on the road. But aside from running his amps into a Universal Audio OX, Noy explains why he's still not impressed with digital amp solutions.Noy's most important advice for players? “You gotta go out of your house and play live,” he says, explaining why it doesn't cut it to just home-record clips for Instagram or YouTube. And while he sings the praises of his favorite modern jazz players, he tells Rhett why he thinks that rock and blues guitar-playing haven't evolved much since the '70s: “There's nobody that took it to the next level or invented something new.”Big thanks to StewMac for sponsoring this episode. John began playing drums at the age of 5 in Oakland California. Oakland proved to be a perfect incubator for John as he thrived playing in many of the school, community, rock, jazz, and funk bands in the area. This experience gave John a diverse background that continues to serve him well today. Early in his career, John was playing in local bands opening for such diverse acts as George Benson, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who (two North American tours), and many more. John's reputation quickly grew and he found himself playing with San Francisco/Oakland bay area legends including Joshua Redman, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), and Miles Davis band alumni Barry Finnerty, Garth Webber, and Benny Rietveld. John continued to cast his net as wide as possible. He began getting calls from New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New Orleans to audition with such artists as Pee Wee Ellis, Stephen Jenkins (Third Eye Blind), Cake, and many more. These experiences gave John national exposure which has led to local, touring, and/or studio dates with Josh Groban, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Pat Benatar, Steve Miller, Booker T., Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Oz Noy and many more. John has played multiple productions of Hamilton in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Puerto Rico and tours and records with Carl Verheyen. Big bands tempt the ambitious jazzer with their expansive possibilities for arrangements, the variegated colors they offer, and their sheer power.  But, boy, those budgets!  These days you need a generous label or a grant or two to make things work.  We take a look at a very seventies example of the genre and then a brand new effort by a young woman barely old enough to drive.  A guitar trio and a guitar solo fill out the episode, and they couldn't be at further ends of the in to out spectrum.   In the end show, Mike fills us in on a couple major acts he caught recently in San Diego.  Grace Fox – ELEVEN O'SEVEN;  Oz Noy/Riverside Trio – RIVERSIDE; Samo Salamon – DOLPHYOLOGY; Oliver Nelson – SKULL SESSION.

In this episode, I talk to Ron "Blondie Boy" Thaler, who happens to be one of my most favorite people in the world. Ron is a 3-time Grammy & 11-time #1 Billboard record producer, recording artist, drummer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He is credited on over 450 albums and 43 billion streams. Ron is best known by fans as the drummer on Alicia Keys' double Grammy-award-winning No One, and as a character and bandmember on NBC TV's primetime series Lipstick Jungle. Blondie Boy has worked with Rob Thomas, Lana Del Rey, Moby, Taj Mahal, Jewel, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson & Hank Williams Jr., David Guetta, Slash, John Legend, Bethany Joy Lenz, Sarah McLachlan, Billy Ocean & Denise Pearson, Al DiMeola, Mike Stern, Matt Garrison, Oz Noy, Rick Margitza, Rufus Reid, Hiram Bullock, 12XPretty, and many others. Ron and I talk about language, debate the current situation (in a very abstract way)—and in the process, prove that sincere and respectful dialogue trumps differences in opinion. Guitar virtuoso, Oz Noy, is on the show today. Born in Israel, Oz moved to New York in 1996 to play with, as he puts it, the real jazz players. Oz has also won Guitar Player magazine readers poll for “Best Guitar riff on a record”, “Best new talent” and “Best out there guitar player”. Oz also has a new record coming out later this month called Snapdragon with some bad-ass players like Dennis Chambers, Chris Potter, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta and many others. So, be on the lookout for that one!It was a real pleasure talking to Oz and I hope you will enjoy our conversation as well. Check in the description for some of the jazz album mentioned in this episode. In this interview, Oz spoke about: • Having a practice routine • His song Schizophrenic and the tremolo effect • If everything will get back to normal after the pandemic • Moving to New York to play with the “real” jazz players • How tough the first few years were moving to New York • His new album, Snapdragon and recording it at Sweetwater • Important jazz albums to check out • What are intervals and how to practice them • Why only practicing technique is easy • The benefit of doing yoga • The difference between writing songs and writing music • Why he is not a songwriter Album Tips By Oz: Miles Davis - Live At The Plugged Nickel - https://open.spotify.com/album/2mU4JzmR1ej9ruf9FNx4eR?si=s2qKhNtuSJCOi8Uk9wrltg Kurt Rosenwinkel - https://open.spotify.com/artist/253GMpCNwx1TJtASNAeDoP?si=-yVdD4I6Sc615COUHeg8Iw Nir Felder - II - https://open.spotify.com/album/1o8RJPlyIQ18LpGFgFjcBa?si=-1vcTy2YQHCmY1uUA8Wg-g Miles Davis - The Man With The Horn - https://open.spotify.com/album/1fRSDRiFk922cV3bgFCdtz?si=HSXpH0eaRJ-qWNr4-NbgiQ Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7F8NRNfsAcAnnN2WQMUuZk?si=cAxYaJ-BSiiVgZGT9dd5RQ Pat Metheny Group - https://open.spotify.com/artist/4uBSazM6snEc9wCG3jMlYt?si=66d4h7tpT7mQ8RfOuOA1qA Lou Donaldson - Alligator Bogaloo - https://open.spotify.com/album/4XBcW9JiDXOxXb9sfI1CiX?si=_D_DUxScQ4uyhHBM780veQ Lou Donaldson - Midnight Creeper - https://open.spotify.com/album/34ATM9F3xEyKpRngzzes5A?si=H9wP2aYJTqKwN3slzUpj4Q John McLaughlin- Is That So? - https://open.spotify.com/album/3ylCRdrUcCGJo47CkPtCDm?si=oOx_X_ZFQXSSW3HwVcfvIw Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue - https://open.spotify.com/album/0hMuKAciHKinu4L3R4Ojjl?si=GRTO-pIJTnWKP3bbNVY8YA ►► Join The Audio Tribe To Get Exclusive Access To Interviews, Private Q&A’s And Live Streams: https://www.youraudiosolutions.com/exclusive-access

Keith Carlock - Locked In

Drumeo Gab Podcast

Man, am I ever a lucky guy. Keith Carlock has been one of my drumming heroes for many years. Ever since I saw the 1999 Marciac Jazz Festival video on YouTube, featuring Keith, Wayne Krantz, and Tim Levebre, I have been a big fan of these musicians. That video had a very profound effect on me as a young musician who was trying to find something new that I would connect with for the rest of my musical life. Since then, I have wandered cyberspace to find other examples of Keith’s playing in that context that I could also connect with but unfortunately, high fidelity content featuring Keith online is not in abundance. This is one of the big reasons I was excited to see Keith perform and teach his concepts at Drumeo. To witness that in person was a pleasure of the highest order. Moreover, to interview such a modern legend in the Drumeo studio was something I never EVER thought would ever be in my future. So first and foremost, I owe an enormous thank you to the wonderful team at Drumeo for this opportunity and to Keith for giving me his undivided attention and time after a full day of filming lessons at Drumeo.   Keith Carlock is a favorite of mine because he has such a firm grasp of having a distinct sound. In addition to that, he has managed to forge an incredibly nice career for himself too. Working with such acts as Steely Dan, Toto, James Taylor, Oz Noy, Wayne Krantz, Sting, and John Mayer to name a few. He also released his own instructional DVD through Hudson Music titled The Big Picture: Phrasing, Improvisation, Style, and Technique. Over the years he has also received many accolades through the Modern Drummer’s readers poll, managing to win a few and make it to the top three in several categories many times over. Too many drummers, Keith is held in high regard for his smooth delivery, musical style, and untouchable groove. Can You Unlearn?   Keith studied at North Texas State University in their acclaimed jazz program in the early ’90s. Taught by Ed Soph, Keith went to the University of North Texas to learn jazz. It would prove to be nearly impossible to consume and digest all of the materials covered in school. Keith sat upon that material for a few years to process what he had taken in.   There also came a point where Mr. Soph approached Keith’s mother to inform her that he felt that Keith no longer had to continue his studies. Ed felt that Keith would be just fine if he stopped going.  I suppose it is fair to say that Mr. Soph possessed some exceptional foresight.   At one point in the interview, I asked Keith if he ever wished that he could unlearn some of the stuff he learned in school. This curiosity spawned because of a very interesting point made by Mark Guiliana on episode 108 of DrumeoGab. Mark had declared that while school was great, sometimes he kind of missed how he used to play before he learned all of this stuff in school. This point of view struck me as a very interesting point made in that interview with Mark.     Keith had said that he went to school to learn and be a sponge. How he characterized his sound has much to do with the time spent with guitarist, Wayne Krantz. It is how I found Keith originally, after all. Keith regards those early years in NYC, specifically with Krantz, as the years that he really found his sound. That must have been amazing times for Keith. If you watch any of their stuff, you will notice the wonderful mix of searching for the high and getting there. Wayne  with Tim and Keith at the 55 bar playing their asses off is something I wish I could have seen when they were playing there all the time. Time Away From Home   Keith is a father and a husband — and a musician. Being a musician seems to be both isolating and social, which seems like a dichotomy. When your life also encompasses your family and friends, I have to think about how the pleasure of the road changes. I would personally find that very challenging. For any small length of time that I have been away from my family, I end up missing them quickly and I find that it takes a day or two to adjust when I return home. I can imagine how difficult long periods of time for touring drummers would be when their family is at home. Like anything, people adapt and find their ways to make it work though.    Todd Sucherman had said in episode 101, he just slides into the groove that is happening and adjusts to them. Time away from loved ones will always be hard though. It is the life a musician chooses to live. It is one of those sacrifices, if you do in fact see it that way.    I want to share a quick story. This is abrupt, but hang in there. This is a great perspective I was given by a stranger that applies to this.   While I was staying in Abbotsford at the Sandman hotel, I popped outside for a bit of fresh air and found myself having a nearly forty-minute conversation with someone who was also staying at the hotel. He was a European man, middle-aged, who was in town because he and his team set up the scoring system screens for horse racing tracks. I can’t remember all of the details of his job, but what I do recall was the fact that he and his team spend upwards of 300 days per year on the road. His name was Tom.   Tom told me an amazing story about how he was a musician in Europe during his teens and into his twenties. He became quite popular in Germany and other parts of Europe with his music. He got into electronica towards the end of his music career and had the best management in Europe handling his act at the time. This same management was working for Sigfried Fischbacher. Yes, the world-renowned magician. Well, as it turns out, Tom and Sigfried became very good friends. Sigfried eventually told Tom that he should incorporate magic into his musical show to bedazzle his audience and add something that no one was doing at the time.   Eventually, Tom’s act became solely a magic show. He bought a caravan and toured all over Europe performing his magic. He eventually gave that up and began this gig with the scoreboard systems. This is, of course, the cliffs notes version of the story he told me but there was something very interesting that he talked to me about.    A perspective that helped me understand a lot more about what some musicians who tour for most of their lives might go through. Tom had said that after a week at home, as much as he loved his home (which he showed me a picture of on his phone and it is absolutely lovely looking) he gets very antsy after a week. Willie Nelson comes to mind.    What I was getting from Tom was that even though he did miss home when he was away, he was just so used to the life of being in different, far away places all the time. Tom began touring very young. So, really -- it is all he knows. He probably feels more at home on the road than at home. Starting late with a career that involves travel might be a totally different story for some people. I just find this idea of detachment from a physical home base really fascinating about musicians, or any entertainment based careers.   I wonder how many musicians began playing an instrument because of the appeal of potentially touring? Could that be why some musicians began playing? This is why I think some people are built for the road. There must be so many costs and perks to touring. The adventure! I mean, c’mon, when you are young it would be amazing! This must be a dream for a person who is, other than to him/herself and music, not committed to anything too significant. Pack up and go whenever you want. Eventually though, I think it is hard to not notice the pressure to conform to adult society. House, married, stable job, financial freedom, kid(s) and on it goes.   I am bringing this up because I know some musicians that never really settled down. When you are young it must be fun, but it seems lonely when you’re older. Props to any musician that has a family at home and with the support of their spouse, manages to find a routine or norm within their family unit. Just something to create some stability. That mustn’t come easy. The thing we love isn’t easily compatible with the idea of settling down. IF, you want to make it your life.   Finding Your Voice   I see a lot of chatter online, and I am certain it has been discussed within this podcast before, that we as musicians need to learn as many styles as possible in order to establish a more reliable career. Before I continue, I do not disagree with this at all because it has been stated many times by many industry professionals. But the quality of that message is determined by how it is interpreted. It could be possible that the wrong approach to this idea leads to a generic sound. Even with a generic sound, as long as the drumming is tight, and you have yourself put together professionally, that could be just fine. However, I still feel like there is something to be said for recognizable musicians.   So I asked Keith what he thought about this, after basically answering my own question, and he made a very good point in particular. He used an example of some African music that he was asked to perform once where the artists sang the parts for him to play, which was very helpful he had mentioned. Keith wasn’t born in Africa, nor did he grow up there with their music, so there is a limit to the authenticity. He managed to play the music and they actually called him back even though he may not have been the most ideal musician to play the music.    But the most important thing he had said in regards to all of this, in my opinion, was that with any musical style it is important to find your voice in it. What is it that you can connect with and project your true self through the music? This is such a cool point I think. Not just the notes, but the attitude, the spirit, creativity, and flow. I think this is a strong point made by Keith that should be considered by everyone when they get called to perform. How can you inject your voice into something pre-existing and let your sound be heard without taking anything away from the music?   To Conclude   This opportunity to speak with one of my heroes is one that I will never forget and certainly a highlight with this podcast. Keith is an incredibly nice guy. What is nice is when you meet one of your heroes and they turn out to be a person that you really like. It was a very important and special time that I will be telling my kid about one day. So, I hope that you enjoy some good vibes and the thoughts of a truly great player in this episode. It was an absolute treat. Thank you again for all of your comments in the Drumeo Edge section, DM’s and emails sent to me to show your love and support to this podcast. We spread our wings this episode and interview our first bassist, Jimmy Haslip. Now before you call me out regarding our bassists’s perspective show, with two of our favorite bass players, keep in mind that was a four mic show and not really an interview. Most of you will know Jimmy from his long-term relationship with the seminal fusion group the Yellowjackets. During his 32-year tenure with the band Jimmy and fellow band mates released some of the most influential music in that genre’s history. All the while Jimmy continued to work with other musicians on various live and studio projects which ultimately led him to develop an affinity and mastery for production. In 2012 Jimmy decided to take a break from touring to concentrate on producing music of his own and for other like-minded musicians. Little did he know that break would turn into a permanent full-time gig. In this episode we caught up with Jimmy during his recent stop in Atlanta with the Oz Noy trio. I met him in the lobby of his hotel where we set up shop and talked about his recent gigs and production projects. We then devote the majority of show discussing the drummers that Jimmy has worked with. It is one of the most impressive and comprehensive lists of drummers and percussionists I’ve ever seen. We naturally discuss his work with great jazz and fusion players such as: Will Kennedy, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gergo Borlai, Tom Brechtlein, and Joel Rosenblatt. But we also cover a list of players that you wouldn’t normally associate with Jimmy. And…of course, we finish up with a run through the gauntlet that is the DWG Rorschach test. It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road."   This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Bill has produced recordings for jazz guitarists Steve Briody and Matt Marshak. He has also performed on Broadway for the shows Movin’ Out and Hot Feet!

The Wizard of Oz. Noy. There’s no man behind the curtain. He’s the real deal. A working musician since the age of 13, a session musician no less, he took his native Israel by a rock/pop/jazz storm, a recognized part of their hit talk show house band by his early 20s. He’s been killing it worldwide since. No drinks, no drugs, fastidious practice, make the man, and the musician. With 10 albums of his own, Oz has played with just about everybody. Including his heroes. Getting to play rhythm guitar on Walk This Way with Steve Tyler and Joe Perry, one highlight. I saw him kill Get Out Of My Life Woman with Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top two weeks ago, https://bit.ly/2CHkDu3 We talked his yellow brick road, and how he’s found his way home, doing what he loves, and loving it. Jazz may be one of his things, but he loves pop, rock and the blues and has mastered and is in demand cross-genre. Playing an Elton John tune with Sting another highlight, and with Cyndi Lauper for the Dalai Lama- does that story have a punchline. There’s also been Chris Botti, Harry Belafonte, Clay Aiken, Toni Braxton, Phoebe Snow, Nile Rogers,The Allman Brothers, Allen Toussaint, Eric Johnson, Don Was, Nelly Furtado, Jennifer Hudson, Don Henley, Michael Buble, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Sting, Steve Perry, Allison Krauss, and Foreigner, for Chrissakes! Almost all of our guests are friends; I was a bit trepidatious having barely met Oz recently. What a great pleasure to find him warm, easy, affable, generous, thoughtful, helpful, humble, and fun. The only drag was not having an amp so we could sample his gifts. We can here: http://www.oznoy.com/discography/ Loving his band Ozone Squeeze. I was schooled, edu-tained, and happy. He shares his early musical influences from his parents, his Mom was a piano teacher, his Dad taught him to play trumpet at 5 years old, the lure of his older brother’s drum set, and the incredible experiences he had at UNT, playing with the One O’Clock Lab Band. Ross has lived in NYC, for the past 9 years, performed and/or toured with Lew Soloff, Kenny Werner, Patti Austin, Chris Potter, Jean Michele Pilc, Francois Mouton, Richard Bona, Rufus Reid, Mark Egan, Oz Noy, Marc Johnson, Patricia Barber, The Manhattan Transfer, and Grace Kelly, to name a few. I am blessed to have Ross as my son-in-law, and in our conversation, I encouraged him to share the sweet, romantic story of his first date with my daughter, Julia. My guest this episode is Mr. Oz Noy. One of the most accomplished guitarists out there on the scene today, Oz has it all- amazing chops, vocabulary, technique, all delivered with touch, soul and tone. His 9 solo records capture all of this and, if that's not enough there's more; he uses the best rhythm sections in the world, surrounding himself with drummers including Dave Weckl, Keith Carlock, Anton Fig and bassists Will Lee, James Genus and Jimmy Haslip. As you'll hear in the podcast, touring all over the world with his own music isn't what he originally set out to do, but it's nice work if you can get it. He also has a nice resume of backing up artists in the studio and live such as Gavin Degraw, Richard Bona, Chris Botti,Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper, Clay Aiken, Akiko Yano and more. He also has a new band that you'll hear about called Ozone Squeeze. In this interview we'll discuss his early years in Tel Aviv, moving to NYC, putting together his first record (Oz Live) and how he rehearses the bands, pedals- (he'll talk about what his favorite most useful pedal is), his instructional videos for True Fire, current state of the blues in his opinion, influences and much, much more. Plus you get my usual doses of sarcasm and bad humor. Over the past decade, Keith Carlock has gained worldwide notoriety through his steady gig with Steely Dan. In uncharacteristic fashion, Keith has held the reigns behind Steely’s drum set since joining the band for the recording of their 2003 album “Everything Must Go.” Since then, Keith has been a hot prospect and has performed with high profiles artists, such as Sting, John Mayer, James Taylor, Chris Botti, Oz Noy, Wayne Krantz, Diana Ross, Faith Hill and many others. And soon, Keith will be taking over drumming duties for Toto this year for both the upcoming world tour, as well as performing on the band’s long awaited album project. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome Keith Carlock.

The 355th Roadhouse takes on holiday blues in more ways than one. I include several blues Christmas tracks. And, we express our own holiday blues at the passing of Hubert Sumlin with a full Sumlin set. Omar & The Howlers, Roomful of Blues, Savoy Brown, Oz Noy, and Tracy Nelson stand right out in this edition of The Roadhouse. Yet, they manage to leave plenty of room for a full stable of great blues tracks that fill another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

And, it's that freshness that makes this hour of The Roadhouse another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
