A follow-up to last week's Hockey Update. Not all the news is good. This week's movie is based on a true story, a first for this podcast. As such, Steve dives into the real history of Alfred (Alferd) Packer.Cannibal! The Musical: A musical bit of fan fic surrounding the real life "adventures" of Alfred Packer, a 19th Century American who served in the Civil War, became a wilderness guide and gold miner, then ate a bunch of guys. That escalated quickly, huh? The movie might just be a vehicle to mock a woman Trey Parker was in a relationship with at one time, as her namesake in the movie is Packer's fictional horse, Lianne, aka The Horse Who Would Let Anybody Ride Her. He may have made this entire movie just to talk about her.Yor, The Movie with the Wordy Title final grade: Steve: It was entertaining. If you're a fan of South Park or Team America: World Police, you'll like this as a kind of origin story for Trey and Matt. Their restaurant doesn't have very good food, FYI. The local twist of this movie makes it interesting to us. 2.75/5.0Brandon: This one was a little shpadoinkle, but not all the way shpadoinkle. You could see bits and pieces of things that would later become the kind of humor that would make these guys boatloads of cash with South Park and other stuff. 2.5/5.0Cocktail of the Week:The Cannibal Reviver1 oz Gin1/2 oz Lemon Juice1/2 oz Yellow Chartreuse or Genepy de Chamois1/2 oz Dolin Sweet White VermouthPeychaud BittersCombine everything in a cocktail shaker. Shake to combine and chill, then strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge/wheel. Cocktail Grade: Maybe it's the fact that we're not popping the $80 for a bottle of Chartreuse, and the Genepy stuff messes it up, but this one was just OK. A bit of an anise flavor that will turn off black licorice haters. Better than ChatGPT creations, at least. 2.0/5.0------------------Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to:boozeandbmovies@gmail.comX: @boozeandbmoviesInstagram: @boozeandbmoviesThreads: @boozeandbmovieswww.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies
Ronnie Ciago joined us for an interview! Drummer, drum instructor, clinician, author, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, he's worked with a LOT of people! In the Yes sphere, he has performed with Patrick Moraz at the Baked Potato and the Musicians Institute in 1996, on a cover of "Los Endos" from 1998's The Fox Lies Down on Broadway - A Tribute to Genesis, and the track "One Day in June" which ended up on Moraz's solo album Change of Space. And in 2011, he was part of a lineup of Circa: that also included Johnny Bruhns, Tony Kaye, and Billy Sherwood. Beyond all that, he has also worked with the likes of Jeff Berlin, Robert Downey Jr., Mick Taylor, Bill Ward, and more! During the interview, there were internet issues, but we were able to get him back on as the broadcast progressed.

Colorado-bred, LA-based keyboardist Lao Tizer embodies what it means to be a 21st-century musician inhabiting the jazz sphere ¾ that being one who embraces musical diversity and has no fear of crossing boundaries. But Tizer also happens to come by this naturally. As the self-described “child of East Coast Jewish hippies,” he was exposed to and was influenced by his parents' extensive musical tastes from a young age: “My dad had a huge music collection. He loved classical music and had all this world music ¾ Ravi Shankar, R. Carlos Nakai, music of the Sufis ¾ plus my parents were boomers, so that brought in all the Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Elvis, Janis Joplin, and Motown. The Temptations were my favorite band as a kid. So, I basically grew up with everything but jazz, which I didn't really discover until I was about 16.” It was a couple of seemingly random selections from the Columbia House mail-order club that turned him toward a new and lasting musical direction. ”It was buy one, get twelve free, right? So I ordered Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux. Then one Sunday morning, it all just kind of hit me. To a lot of people trained in the classical tradition, jazz sounds like it breaks all kinds of rules, but I just heard there was a whole other world to explore there.” From there, Tizer hit the ground running, applying his classical piano skills to jazz and releasing his first self-produced solo keyboard albums while still in high school. After graduating from Boulder High, Tizer moved to LA and studied with legendary piano guru Terry Trotter for about two years, forgoing formal music education. “Instead of going to music school, I just got my butt kicked on the bandstand. I was always working with musicians who were older and more experienced. School's great but there's no better way to grow than playing with people who are going to push you to grow. I was so green, man. Learning to play in a band concept ¾ playing in good time with a rhythm section–was one of the most challenging things, coming from being a solo pianist.” But his approach and talents served him well. At 19, he formed and led the first band under his own name, taking indirect inspiration from another iconic jazz entity. “When I got into listening to The Pat Metheny Group in the late ‘90s, they had that “formula” that definitely spoke to me ¾ great, through-composed music with a lot of room for improvisation. That's the formula that I love” In the ensuing years and through various incarnations, The Lao Tizer Band has flown by that directional compass while infusing the bespoke influences and experiences that inform Tizer's musical worldview. Subsequently, the band attracted many top players to its ranks ¾ GRAMMY-winning saxophonist Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea), Emmy-winning guitarist Chieli Minucci (Special EFX), Senegalese bassist Cheikh N'Doye (Baaba Maal), violinist extraordinaire Karen Briggs (Stanley Clarke), GRAMMY-winning drum phenom Gene Coye (Hiromi) and legendary GRAMMY-winning percussionist Munyungo Jackson (Stevie Wonder) ¾ and became a steady presence at LA hotspots like The Baked Potato as well as entertaining audiences at premier jazz festivals around the world. Milestones among these were The Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, Cape Town Jazz Festival, Java Jazz Festival, and Atlanta Jazz Festival. The six albums he has released as a leader have seen Tizer steadily grow while constantly defining (and redefining) who he is as a keyboardist, composer, and bandleader. “I think the most important thing as an artist and composer is to have your own identity and your own sound. Everybody comes to where they are in music through whatever path they have followed and I think staying true to what brought you to where you are now helps to create your own true voice. I think I have always had that.” But not content to rest, Tizer recently decided to take another bold turn with his music. In 2018, The Lao Tizer Band released Songs From The Swinghouse, a project that included fresh, sophisticated takes on a number of vocal-oriented covers from seminal artists such as U2, Led Zeppelin, and Cat Stevens along with a collection of seven original instrumentals penned by Tizer. The album was released to critical acclaim and notched the Top 10 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz album chart. “We were always only instrumental until that record. The concept was to reinvent covers like ‘Ramble On,' ‘Pride in the Name of Love,' and ‘Sad Lisa.' I had never arranged or recorded any vocal material with my group before, so to take those tunes and make them our own was really fun.” Now, with his forthcoming album, Amplify, Tizer ups the ante by bringing original vocal-oriented songs into his mix of smart instrumentals ¾ as well as a few potent new additions to the band. “A big part of the concept for Amplify is to cross over. It's not really a “jazz” record but it definitely has jazz elements, no question. The band still features the core lineup we've had for a while now with Eric, Chieli, Karen, Munyungo, Gene, and Cheikh, but now there are a few new faces involved in the group. Namely saxophone and flute wunderkind Danny Janklow (MONKestra) and Rolling Stone 2022 ”Bassist of the Year” nominee Anthony Crawford (Erykah Badu), who shares low-end duties with Cheikh. We augmented our already large band with a horn section and background singers on a few songs as well. The album is nine songs ¾ five vocal, four instrumental ¾ all original, no covers.” But perhaps Tizer's most intriguing choice of secret weapon for Amplify is bringing American Idol star Elliott Yamin to handle the vocal material. “Elliott's first album had that platinum hit single “Wait For You.” He's very much a throwback to a blue-eyed soul kind of vibe and it was amazing to be able to bring him into the band. This project was a little outside his stylistic wheelhouse because it is a bit more adventurous harmonically. I think he was a little intimidated by the music early on but he's such a remarkably gifted singer and he's just singing his butt off. He's turned out to be unbelievable in this project and the band. He's super gung-ho about it too, which is great. I couldn't have asked for a better fit!” With these continuing steps over boundaries into new stylistic territory, one might wonder if Tizer has any trepidation about alienating the core base of jazz listeners he's built up over time. Quite the contrary, it seems. “I love that longstanding boundaries in music are getting broken down. Artists like Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper, and Kamasi Washington have proven this theory that I've long held: If you have music that's melodic and grooves, you can win over a very broad array of listeners.” Indeed, Tizer testifies to having seen the evidence firsthand. “There's been a really cool renaissance and rebirth with all these genre-defying artists and I've seen a shift in the crowd at our shows too. There's a lot of 20 and 30-somethings coming out, and that's so cool. That's what the future audience is going to be. If we want to have long careers like our predecessors, we need to have our peers and younger listeners connect to this music and follow it.” With eyes set on the future and a willingness to keep exploring, Tizer's simplest ethos perhaps sums it up best: “I say forget the boundaries. Just make good music and try to connect with as many listeners as you can.

Buy Mitch a Coffee account.venmo.com/u/Mitch-Hampton-1 Listeners, today we get to share our talk with music LEGEND, Pete Christlieb! We are so very honored to have him on our show and hope you enjoy and share it with us! Inside this Episode with your host, Mitch Hampton Pete Christlieb has been among my favorite saxophonists and all around musicians for the past forty to fifty years at least. His biography reads like a who's who in jazz and popular music and he has excelled at having an original identity as a jazz improviser as well as one of the top flight performers in ensemble contexts, whether big back, symphony or rock group. Christlieb has been working as a musician since he left high school at age 16 and has so many great stories about his unique career. It was an honor to get to sit down with him and talk about his life and music and I hope you get as much joy from this episode as we did recording it. Pete Christlieb Biography Born into a home filled with classical music, there was littlequestion about Pete Christlieb's career path. Pete's father, Don Christlieb was a world renowned double reed player. His distinctive sound was heard on more than 750 productions over 50 years at 20th Century Fox. Pete started working professionally just out of High School. He did gigs at the Lighthouse as a sub for his teacher Bob Cooper. His father took Pete to The Carriage House in Burbank, (Later renamed to Chadnies) to sit in with pianist Jimmy Rowles. Jimmy liked his playing and became a big influence on Pete's conception. Jimmy trained Pete in his unique approach to jazz, inviting him to come by and sit in on Sundays. Sarah Vaughan came in to perform several times. They became friends for many years. He met Carmen McRae and was able to play and record with her too. It was a seven year sprint. “It was like swinging from one vine to the next. one band would end and the next would begin.” Pete was ready for a change. He had been playing with Louie Bellson “He was like a father and a best friend,” Pete said of his association with Bellson. In those days serial TV shows would vacation in other towns during the summer, mostly to get out of New York. Carson would take the Tonight Show to Los Angeles.” Carson productions was looking for musicians to fill out the band stand in Los Angles and asked Louie for some players to come in. He recommended Christlieb for the two week gig and again the next year. When the tonight show moved to Los Angels Pete was asked to join the band on a permanent basis, that became 20 years with the tonight show. Pete was a regular at Dante's , The Baked Potato and Al Fonses playing with other jazz greats like his favorites, Frank Rossolino and Conte Condoli. Pete started Bosco records, his great dane's namesake, and recorded his first solo Album, Self Portrait in 1981. These were followed by Going My Way & Dino's Live and several others. Pete is well known for his albums with other tenor sax greats Bob Cooper, Warne Marsh, Gene Ammons, Don Lamphere, Hadley Caliman, Ferdinand Polvel, Ernie Watts & Rickey Woodard. Pete produced records for other artists including Louie Bellson, Don't Stop Now which earned him one of three Grammy Nominations for best jazz soloist. He recorded an album with Freddy Hubbard. and has featured solos on Records and CDs like Natalie Cole's “ Unforgettable.” The TV show, Family Guy featuring the Ron Jones Orchestra was recently added to his long list of credits. Pete continues to record with well-known musicians and recording artists. Pete plays in his own quintet with wife Linda on trombone. Together they created the Tall and Small band, a ten piece band with their first CD out called “High On You.” When asked if he didn't become a musician what would he be doing with his life, he grins and says, “I'd probably be racing cars.” Links to Pete's beautiful works https://petechristlieb.com/ #NBC #johnnycarson #thetonightshow #tenor saxophone #saxophone #hollywood #pablorecords #buddyrich #docseverinson #jazz #rock #freddiehubbard --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/support

Anne talks through these easy Hasselback style potatoes that cook right in your slow cooker. Keep them on warm and serve with toppings for an easy baked potato bar at the Super Bowl, or eat them with almost any main entree for an easy side dish. The printable recipe is linked above, but if you're making your grocery list here's what you'll need: Produce: 6 small-medium russet potatoes (about 2 lbs) Dairy: 1 stick (8 tbsp) butter Spices: Garlic powder, salt, and pepper For a baked potato bar you'll also want toppings to put out. Some favorites are bacon bits, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and chives. If you're serving other meats like chili or pulled pork those are great to place near the potato bar as well.

Meera, Michelle and Liz discuss their love of Sam's Steakhouse: from the unmatched vibes, to the shrimp cocktail, to their classic wedge salad. They discuss the rise of the dirty martini and how it has inspired a wave of savory cocktails around town using ingredients like tomato, miso, chicken stock or even crab butter. If an RFP isn't asking a question that you think it needs to ask, is it okay to provide additional information? While it's tempting to tell a client what you think they need in your proposal response, it's not always well received. Just like ordering a baked potato with butter and getting a loaded one. So, what is the best approach to elaborating on RFP response answers? So you stand out in a good way? On this episode of The RFP Success Show, I'm sharing my ‘baked potato' analogy for elaborating on RFP response answers. I explain how it might confuse evaluators if you add or change offerings and describe the challenge of evaluating a response that doesn't align with the score sheet. Listen in for insight on positioning additional offerings in a way that boosts your score and learn how to demonstrate that the additional information you're providing serves the client's needs. Key Takeaways What to do if an RFP isn't asking a question you think it needs to ask My ‘baked potato' analogy for adding additional information to a proposal response How it might confuse an evaluator if you add or change offerings Why you should only include additional offerings IF you can demonstrate how it adds more value to what they need How to position additional options in a way that boosts your score Connect with Lisa Lisa's Website Lisa on Twitter Lisa on Facebook Lisa on LinkedIn The RFP Success Company on YouTube The RFP Success Company on LinkedIn Subscribe on iTunes Email podcast@rfpsuccess.com Resources Get on the RFP Success Accelerator Waitlist Book a Call with the RFP Success Company Dare to Be Influential: Maximizing Your Positive Influence While Still Being True to You by Lisa Rehurek The RFP Success Book by Lisa Rehurek The RFP Success Institute
Composer and pianist Alan Chan's music often takes inspiration from his life experiences around the world, with a take of surprising wittiness and humor. Coming from a classical background, he began composing for jazz big band under the mentorship of Gary Lindsay in Miami, then Vince Mendoza and Shelly Berg in Los Angeles, and Jim McNeely who fanned his flame of desire to create works for jazz ensembles. As an educator, Alan directed the El Camino College Concert Jazz Band and the Jazz program for five years. He presented more than 20 concerts in the community, and conducted over 120 big band compositions from across jazz style periods. His work as an Adjunct Professor and Coordinator of the ECC Jazz Festival has earned him Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching and Student Learning in December 2017 from Academic Senate. He was also a guest artist and clinician at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), Hong Kong Jazz Summer 2016, and a judge of international/national competitions such as Percussive Arts Society Composition Contests, SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Awards and ASMAC Bill Conti Big Band Arranging & Composing Competition. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy. For more than a decade, he has been focused on creating unique music for his 17-piece Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra (ACJO), which is comprised of top studio/jazz musicians in Los Angeles. Their debut "Shrimp Tale" album was released in 2014, which received rave reviews and radio plays across the U.S. ACJO appears in Los Angeles venues such as the Baked Potato, Vibrato Grill Jazz, the Huntington, Vitello's, Catalina Jazz Club, Westin Bonaventure Hotel and the Jonathan Club. His band also presented concerts at the Brooklyn Public Library, Stone NYC and ShapeShifter Lab in New York City.In recent years, Alan Chan began to collaborate with Chinese instrumentalists to explore the possibility of merging jazz, improvisation and traditional Chinese vibes into a dramatic and innovative form. ACJO's new project “Moon Walk,” with pipa (Chinese lute) virtuoso Min Xiao-Fen (New York City), was premiered in Los Angeles in August 2018 and subsequently on the East Coast in Brooklyn Central Library in New York City in February 2019. "Moon Walk" was selected to be featured at the Jazz Education Network Annual Conference in Orlando in January 2023.Professional groups that have presented his works have included Grammy-nominated Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Millennium Jazz Orchestra (the Netherlands), Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Taipei Percussion, Taipei City Chinese Orchestra, Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (Los Angeles) and La Jolla Symphony.Website: alanchanjazzorchestra.comInstagram: @alanchanmusic__________________SGV Master Key Podcast:www.sgvmasterkey.cominfo@sgvmasterkey.com
It may seem like a philosophical question, but there is indeed an actual answer to when just a baked potato transforms into a loaded baked potato. And Kirk and Lindsey have that answer! (You're welcome.) They also have the answers to which type of loaded baked potato is the best, as well as a bizarre tale of why Kirk as a teenager once went to prom in Muncie, Indiana with a girl he met in Paris, France. (And yes, that story does have a baked potato theme.) It's Christmas and you're beautiful! We start the show with a pretty basic but thorough version of A Christmas Carol from Little Fox. It's aimed at helping teach English as a second language and it actually covers most of the story despite being less than 20 minutes long.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bdKWoQNilIThen Bob Baker our Podcast Barman discusses a rather rude English word that's not quite so rude overseas. After that we have the quiz. Try to beat my score. Then we look at the Christmas Not So Classic of Santa Baked Potato. A charity single (and book) from Matt Lucas. It failed to make an impact at Christmas in 2020, but it's harmless.Check it out here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTAfNwpUF5YThen Bob Baker is back with a suggestion from Ty Virgin about how to use alcohol to feel festive throughout the year. This episode's recommedation is actually from Bob Baker. It's his new podcast: The Festive Foreign Film Fans. Each episode they discuss a foreign Christmas film, so there will be plenty of new films you've never heard of before.Check it out here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/festive-foreign-film-fans/id1685586608Get in touch.Email: totalchristmas@gmail.comWebsite: totalchristmaspodcast.comMerry Christmas
