On my recent Edith Mathis episode, I played her singing one of Handel's Neun deutsche Arien, a group of religious songs set to German texts by pietist poet Berthold Heinrich Brockes. A number of years ago, I created another episode featuring all nine of the arias sung by a magnificent assembly of fine baroque singers. At that time, as a pendant to that episode, I also did a bonus episode with two of the lesser-known of those singers, German sopranos Margot Guilleaume (12 January 1910 – 25 June 2004) and Adele Stolte (12 October 1932 – 27 September 2020) Guilleaume's version was recorded in 1953, Stolte's in 1968. If Stolte's is a silvery voice, then Guilleaume's has a more burnished quality. Each of them complements the other and, to keep a fair balance between the two, each are given five arias to sing, with the episode beginning and ending with the exquisite Süße Stille, sanfte Quelle, sung first by Stolte, then by Guilleaume. Die Johannespassion gehört zu den eindrucksvollsten geistlichen Werken von J.S. Bach und ist – neben der Matthäuspassion – die einzige vollständig erhaltene Passion des Komponisten. Bach hat vermutlich insgesamt fünf Passionen geschrieben, doch nur diese beiden sind vollständig überliefert; die übrigen gelten als verschollen. Die Johannespassion wurde am Karfreitag des Jahres 1724 in Leipzig uraufgeführt. Für Bach war dies eine besondere Situation: Erst kurz zuvor hatte er sein Amt als Thomaskantor angetreten und stand damit erstmals in der Verantwortung für die Kirchenmusik an den Leipziger Hauptkirchen. Mit der Johannespassion präsentierte er ein Werk von grosser musikalischer und dramatischer Intensität. Die Passion erzählt die Leidensgeschichte Jesu nach dem Evangelium des Johannes – jedoch nicht nur als Bericht, sondern als emotionales musikalisches Geschehen. Schon bei der Uraufführung beeindruckte das Werk durch seine starke Ausdruckskraft. Chorpassagen voller dramatischer Energie, bewegende Arien und eindringliche Rezitative lassen die biblische Handlung sehr plastisch erscheinen. Gleichzeitig rief diese emotionale Wirkung auch Kritik hervor: Zeitgenossen empfanden die Musik stellenweise als zu leidenschaftlich und beinahe «opernhaft» für den kirchlichen Rahmen. Bach selbst arbeitete immer wieder an dem Werk und nahm im Laufe seines Lebens mehrere Überarbeitungen vor. Nach seinem Tod geriet die Passion zunächst in Vergessenheit. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert, im Zuge der sogenannten Bach-Renaissance, wurde sie wiederentdeckt und zunehmend aufgeführt. In dieser Zeit interpretierte man Bachs Musik oft in grossen Besetzungen und suchte einen monumentalen Klang. Heute versuchen Musikerinnen und Musiker im Rahmen der historischen Aufführungspraxis, sich dem ursprünglichen Klangbild des 18. Jahrhunderts anzunähern. Mit kleineren Ensembles, historischen Instrumenten und einem neuen Blick auf Bachs Partitur wird erforscht, wie die Johannespassion zur Zeit ihrer Entstehung geklungen haben könnte. "Andrè Schuen - Mozart": So lautet der schlichte Titel des Albums, das Arien, Duette, Lieder und Kantaten aus allen Schaffensperioden des Salzburger Meisters vereint. In der Stadt an der Salzach wurde es auch aufgenommen - für den smarten Bariton aus Südtirol eine Rückkehr zu den Anfängen seiner Karriere. Aus Studienzeiten am dortigen Mozarteum kennt André Schuen den Dirigenten Roberto Gonzales-Monjas und den Pianisten Daniel Heide. Mit ihnen und anderen hochkarätigen Künstlern brachte Schuen jetzt beim gelben Label eine sehr persönliche und facettenreiche Mozart-Hommage heraus.

Als Kind schlich Dana Grigorcea oft in die Seitenbühne der Oper in Bukarest, um dem Geschehen auf der Bühne möglichst nahe zu sein. Heute wirkt sie gerne als Statistin im Zürcher Opernhaus mit. Für die Autorin mehrerer preisgekrönter Bücher ist Musik und Literatur eng miteinander verbunden. Wer mit Dana Grigorcea über Oper spricht, wird schnell feststellen, dass sie viele Arien auswendig mitsingen kann. Seit sie in ihrer frühen Kindheit in der Oper eine Gegenwelt zum Alltag in der kommunistischen Diktatur gefunden hat, begleitet sie die gesungene Musik. In «Musik für einen Gast» spricht Dana Grigorcea darüber, weshalb sie die Oper für ihre Diversität liebt, warum sie sich in der Kunst mehr Mut zum Pathos wünschen würde und weshalb sie in ihren Erzählungen nach Leichtigkeit strebt – auch wenn es nicht einfach ist, sich als Mutter die künstlerischen Freiräume zuzugestehen. Gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble Resonanz unter der Leitung von Riccardi Minasi ist eine abwechslungsreiche und spannungsgeladene CD gelungen, die nicht nur Michael Gmasz von Beginn an in den Bann gezogen hat.Anna Prohaska lebt in Berlin und gehört zu den Stars der dortigen Staatsoper Unter den Linden und der Deutschen Oper Berlin, das Ensemble Resonanz residiert wiederum in Hamburg und ist seit der Eröffnung im Jänner 2017 Residenzensemble in der dortigen Elbphilharmonie. Für Mozart haben sie unter der Leitung von Riccardo Minasi zusammengefunden. Mozarts Haffner Symphonie bildet das musikalische Zentrum der CD und verleiht ihr auch den Namen. Darum gruppieren sich Arien und Szenen aus diversen Mozart Opern, für die Anna Prohaska wie geschaffen scheint.Anna Prohaska verleiht jeder der ausgewählten Arien mit den vorangestellten Rezitativen Chrakater und Tiefe. Mal ein bisschen schroffer und unheimlich eindringlich, wie bei Elletras Verzweiflungsarie aus Idomeneo. Das ist Dramatik pur, die einem den kalten Schauer über den Rücken jagt. Ganz anders im Ausdruck die verliebte Susanna in ihrer Rosenarie „Giunse alfin – deh vieni non tardar“ aus Le nozze die Figaro. Fein gezeichnet, lyrisch und in freudiger Erwartung auf alles, was noch kommen mag. Auf dem Album kommen noch Arien aus der Entführung aus dem Serail, Cosí fan tutte und La clemenza di tito. Das Ensemble Resonanz ist dabei immer präsent und setzt unter Riccardo Minasi auch seine Akzente. Dazu eine ausgesprochen knackige Haffner Symphonie, die einmal mehr zeigt, wie zeitlos und wirklich aufregend Mozart sein kann, wenn er nur lebendig gespielt wird. Und als grande Finale die Konzertarie Ch'io mi scordi di te, bei der auch der Pianist Herbert Schuch das Seine zu dieser großartigen CD beitragen darf. (mg)

Nun ist sie mit dem klein besetzten Ensemble Opera Prima mit Werken von Händel zu erleben und interpretiert diese unheimlich gut und spannend, wie Michael Gmasz findet.Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts hat Georg Friedrich Händel, alias „Il Sassone“, vier Jahre auf einer Studienreise in Italien verbracht. Neben zwei Opern, Rodrigo (November 1707) in Florenz und Agrippina (Dezember 1709) in Venedig, hat er sich in Sachen Vokalmusik in dieser Zeit vorwiegend mit Kantatenkompositionen beschäftigt, von denen knappe 100 überliefert sind. Zwei davon, Armida abbandonata und Agrippina condotta a morire, sowie Ausschnitte aus dem Oratorium Il Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno hat Amanda Forsythe nun für ihr neues Solo-Album ausgewählt. Opera Prima präsentiert sich dazwischen mit zwei Instrumentalintermezzi, natürlich auch von Händel und, zumindest was die Sinfonia in B-Dur HWV 339 betrifft, auch aus Rom.Amanda Forsythe gestaltet die beiden Solokantaten mit einer berührenden Intensität und Leidenschaft. Das solistisch besetzte Ensemble Opera Prima mit Cristiano Contadin ist ihr dabei eine hervorragende Stütze, ob auf stürmischer See (Armida) oder auf dem Leidensweg zum Tod (Agrippina). Amanda Forsythes Stimme ist enorm wandelbar, wie sie auch bei den ausgewählten Arien aus dem Oratorium Il Trionfo kunstvoll beweist. Halsbrecherische Koloraturen im Duett mit dem Geiger Federico Guglielmo in Un pensiero nemica di pace perlen nur so dahin, als ob es zu den einfachsten Übungen gehören würde, so zu singen. Lascia la spina, später als Lacia ch'io pianga zu einer der berühmtesten Händel Arien überhaupt geworden, ist hier nicht als Klagelied sondern eher auf der flotteren Seite angelegt, wird im Oratorium aber auch vom allegorischen Vergnügen, Piacere, gesungen. Vom leidenden Pianissimo bis zum ausbrechenden Furioso, Amanda Forsythe beherrscht ihr Fach, und bleibt dabei immer klangschön. (mg)
