When you think of the city Toronto, there are a few names come to mind. Drake... snowd4y................... the rest. But there's one Torontonian that both Drake and snowd4y look up to and respect. One Torontonian that walked, so that Drake could run. One Torontonian that's actually...weirdly connected to Drake... in the sense that his next album is financed by him... That's right. I'm talking about the GOAT of the Toronto Hip Hop scene, K-OS and we're discussing his debut album paradoxically about his EXIT from the music industry. Joining us all the way from Santa Barbara for this episode is Darrell M. McNeill, director of operations at the Black Rock Coalition and author of a new 33 1/3 study of the Isley Brothers' mighty 1973 album 3 + 3. We start by asking our guest about his '90s contributions to the Village Voice and his involvement with the B.R.C.. Crediting his dad for his own childhood love of the Isleys, Darrell tells us how he came to write about the band. We discuss their unique history across six-plus decades, arriving at the dramatic game-changer that was 3 + 3. Inevitably referencing Jimi Hendrix — an Isleys sideman in the mid-'60s — we ask Darrell about the group's pioneering hybrid of R&B and rock and their covers of classic songs by Carole King, James Taylor et al. A special nod, of course, to Jimi's incalculable influence on kid brother and budding guitar genius Ernie. From the Isleys to Isaac Hayes: following two clips from Ira Robbins' 1995 audio interview with the sometime Stax superstar, we discuss such radical milestones as 'Theme from Shaft' and Hot Buttered Soul's version of Bacharach & David's 'Walk On By'. After a brief digression to salute the 50th anniversary of long-time RBP contributor John Broven's seminal 1974 book Walking to New Orleans, Mark talks us out with quotes from newly-added interviews with Janis Joplin (1969) and Beatles session guitarist David Spinozza (1971). Jasper then wraps up the episode with remarks on Destiny's Child (2003) and The Comet is Coming (2019). Many thanks to special guest Darrell M. McNeill. His book on the Isley Brother's 3 + 3 is published by Bloomsbury and available now. Pieces discussed: The Isleys: first time winners again!, The Isley Brothers: 3 + 3, The Isley Brothers: 3 + 3 = Super Success, Ernie Isley: Pride of the Isleys, Isaac Hayes audio, Fats Domino & His Orchestra: Saville Theatre, Behind The Sun: New Orleans, 'See You Later Alligator': Bobby Charles, Janis Joplin: Janis Superhypermost!, Paul McCartney: Working with Paul — A Session Musician Speaks, Kelly Rowland: Real Girl Talk, Michie Mee is the First Lady of Toronto Hip-Hop and The Comet is Coming: Interstellar Apocalypse.

A trained historian, Dr. D'Amico-Cuthbert's research explores the history of American and Canadian Black popular music, the creative industries and the music marketplace with expertise in Rap music and Hip-Hop culture. Her PhD work traced how Black rappers in the era of mass incarceration constructed complex ethnographies of urban spaces, transformed dispositions of power, and unmasked the modes and mechanisms of a persistent and haunting coloniality in the afterlives of American slavery. Her current postdoctoral research will explore Toronto Rap music's relationship to commerce, anti-Black market segmentation and the availability of state revenue streams and marketplace exposure – and in doing do highlight a social history of power relations between Toronto Hip Hop practitioners, creative marketplace elites, and state-actors. Currently, Dr. D'Amico-Cuthbert also serves on the Education Committee of the Universal Museum of Hip Hop – which is dedicated to the preservation of Hip Hop's history, and is set to open in 2024 in the Bronx, New York City. On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is Toronto hip-hop legend Choclair. Now this is a bucket list interview for me. The Toronto hip-hop scene that came from the late 1990s which also included Kardinal Offishall, Saukrates, and Maestro Fresh Wes, among many others, is so personally special to me. As someone who has frequented Toronto throughout my life, its like a second home to me. My goal is to get all those names I just named on this podcast and we are one down with Choclair. During our conversation, we reminisce about the Toronto hip-hop scene from the 90s, along with breaking down his career during albums like 1999's Ice Cold, 2002's Memoirs of Blake Savage. We also get into the lessons he's learned over the years in his storied music career, his beginnings in music, the aesthetics of Toronto as a city and its artistry, and so much more! Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. Choclair chose fellow Toronto hip-hop pioneer Maestro Fresh Wes. One of the more socially conscious and dopest artists/lyricists, Noyz, joins us for the LAST guest episode of Season 1 of Real Community Talks! If Noyz isn't delivering insane bars at a live event or in the studio it's because he is either at work as a Concurrent Disorders Counsellor & Case Manager or he's co-hosting an episode of the Immigrant Hustle Podcast. A Maltonian by birth, Noyz has a special place in his heart for Malton as he lived here until around age 11. It was from there that he moved to Brampton and started to slowly discover his passion for music and writing but was too self conscious to share it. Noyz had to deal with the idea that performing can be mentally draining as he felt more confident writing but through the encouragement and support of friends and family, he could no longer hide his talent as he decided to share his thoughts with the world. Among many other things, Noyz is a husband, has multiple degrees, is a community advocate/volunteer, is a rapper, beat maker, producer, an activist, an entrepreneur, a workshop facilitator, and a mental health professional. On this episode we talk about the passing of one of the GOAT's Stan Lee, how LOVE can be expressed differently, how he overcame anxiety and the fear of sharing his art, and how he wishes he had started some things earlier in life.
