One of the guys took March Madness a little too literally on our latest episode of In The Circle. Victor Anderson shares his thoughts on two situations with umpires at UC Riverside and in Long Beach that have him fired up. He also gives a little speech to the umpires who might be on a little power trip lately. As Victor calms down, Eric Lopez chats with Pac-12 Network analyst Kenzie Fowler to recap the opening week in the Pac-12 and her early impressions of the league so far. We wrap up the show by looking at the ASUN, including a job opening the week that league play starts and who will challenge Liberty and Central Arkansas.

Good morning. Go Cougs! As you read this, the Cougs are in Philadelphia, preparing to open up the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast. That deserves a deep-dive preview on the matchup.WSU, seeded 5th, would seemingly be a prohibitive favorite against the No. 12 seed Eagles. But FGCU is actually quite terrifying as an opponent — the Eagles have won 30 games and pretty much destroyed everything in their path for a couple of months. Now, that's against the Atlantic Sun Conference, not the Pac-12. But it's impressive enough that DraftKings has set the line as a pick ‘em. No other 5 seed is less than a 4.5-point favorite. What makes the Eagles so dangerous? Like a lot of mid-/low-majors, they're undersized. But they shoot a lot of 3s — and shoot them very well! They also generate a ton of turnovers on defense. These are high-variance strategies that can lead to unexpected outcomes against a supposedly superior opponent. There are weaknesses, though. In fact, the two quality opponents the Eagles played this season — Stanford (1 seed in the tournament) and Duke (3 seed) — shut them down and beat them by 24 and 23 points, respectively. The Cougs might not be as good as those two, but they're a heck of a lot more like those two than they are like the also-rans in the ASun that FGCU routinely beat up. Chasing the Eagles off the 3-point line, offensive rebounding, and securing the ball on offense seem to be the big keys for us. We also took a look at WSU's probable second round opponent, Villanova. Dive deeper into it with us on this episode! Then, we turn our attention to the NIT, where the men's season came to an end with a loss to Eastern Washington. We break down what we saw happen and where the Cougs go from here as they embark on their offseason. And finally, we wrap up by talking about the baseball team, which is off to an incredible start after winning its first Pac-12 series of the season at No. 15 Oregon State. Poll voters are impressed, too, putting WSU in the top 25 for the first time in over a decade.Podcast music by Randy England. With the ASUN championship game tied 66-66, and Terrell Burden heading to the free throw line with 0.7 seconds on the clock, Kennesaw State coach Amir Abdur-Rahim had a simple message for his senior point guard. "I love you," he said.  The feeling was mutual. Burden was the first player signed once Abdur-Rahim became coach four seasons ago. That first year they suffered through a 1-28 season. Sunday, with a simple made free throw, Burden had a chance to beat Liberty and send the Owls to their first NCAA tournament. The first of two shots swished through the net to give KSU a 67-66 lead. What did Abdur-Rahim say before Burden's second attempt?  "Miss it high," he said.   Burden, who finished with a team-high 19 points and was named ASUN tournament MVP, did exactly that. He had the ball bounce off the back of the rim and go straight up. By the time the ball was rebounded, the final moment ticked off the clock and the celebration began with the Owls and the sell out, boisterous KSU Convocation Center record 3,805 fans.  Now, the Owls will have to wait for a week before they find out who they will be playing and where. In the latest Bracketology on ESPN.com, KSU is penciled in as a No. 15 seed and playing Baylor in Denver. CBSSports.com has the Owls as a 14-seed, also playing Baylor, but in Columbus, Ohio. KSU is the first team since BYU in 2001 to advance to the NCAA tournament less than five years after a season with one or zero wins. People thronged to Marietta Square for a full day of games, laughter and revelry during Marietta the Gathering's inaugural festival celebrating the geek community Saturday. A geek, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “an enthusiast or expert who is obsessively interested in a particular subject.” The term “geek” has been used as a derogatory word in the past, stereotyping certain people or hobbies. Today, it is seen as a badge of honor to gamers, pop culture enthusiasts and others who follow their creative passions. There wasn't a cloud in the sky to obstruct the sun as revelers walked by tents, looking at goods and interacting with people plying their wares in the shade. Nevin Marshall, a woodworker from Marietta, was out enjoying the weather with his 4-year-old daughter, Julie, teaching her chess moves on an oversized chess board. Jorge Maldonado, a retail worker from Marietta, was out sharing his passion for all things “Star Wars.” He's a part of the 501st legion, a charity group that spreads the joy of Star Wars by visiting children in the hospital and other kind deeds. Maldonado was showing off his remote-control droid he built to eager fans stopping by and asking questions. He said it took him 18 months to build the droid, and that it always brings smiles to children's faces when he brings it to the hospital.  The Cobb County High School Coalition and Smyrna-based Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta hammered the first nails in the affiliate's first home build of the year. The one-story house will soon be a home for single mother Laurelle and her two children. This is the 26th Habitat home built by the students of the Habitat clubs of the Cobb County High School Coalition. The four Cobb high schools participating in this year's coalition are Campbell, Hillgrove, Pope and Walton High School Habitat for Humanity student chapters. Even though she spends 46% of her income on housing costs, Laurelle's current apartment makes her concerned for her family's health. The electrical wiring in the apartment is substandard, mold is on the ceiling and stray cats' nest in the HVAC vents. Laurelle's looking forward to being able to provide her 14-year-old daughter and her energetic 11-year-old son separate bedrooms. She says she heard about Habitat for Humanity's international work where she grew up in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, but she decided to apply when her son's therapist told her about the homeownership program. Now, she's on her way to building a new home in Marietta, with an affordable, zero interest mortgage. More than 50 people gathered to recognize African-American men in the community who have made significant strides in American society. The Cobb County NAACP will celebrate African-American women who have impacted their community during Women's History Month in March. The evening's celebration serves as a reminder that the struggles and progress of the past are essential to the present, Blackburn said. In between songs and award presentations, Blackburn peppered the audience with famous quotes from Black Americans such as Ava DuVernay, John Lewis, Serena Williams, Harriet Tubman and Alice Walker, trying to see if the audience could identify the source. The honorees gave brief speeches thanking the NAACP and emphasizing the importance of the organization. For a full list of honorees, please head over to MDJ Online dot com. Grown-up spellers should be buzzing: The 6th annual Adult Spelling Bee, a fundraiser for the Cobb branch of Communities in Schools, will take place Friday at the Strand Theatre. Last year's event raised over $60,000 for Communities in Schools of Marietta and Cobb, a school dropout prevention and intervention organization that offers resources to students throughout both districts to fund such programs as career fairs and book distributions. This year's goal is $75,000, according to Jennifer Lynch, who leads the group's fundraising efforts. Participating teams, which this year include different police chiefs around Cobb, young professionals, lawyers and judges and Kiwanis Club members, dress up in costume and imitate characters for the event. The event begins with a VIP program at 5:30 p.m., followed by the start of the general program at 7 p.m. Tickets for this year's bee are available at the Strand's website. General admission tickets are $20, and VIP tickets are $75.   Want to better ensure your fishing success at your local waterway? Motorists in Austell pulled over for faulty tail lights, broken rearview mirrors or other damage to their cars could now be in for a gift card instead of a ticket. Thanks to a partnership between Advance Auto Parts and the Austell Police Department, officers responsible for traffic citations have $500 worth of gift cards from the auto shop. Instead of making drivers pay, the city will pay drivers to be safer on the road, giving them a gift card to fund repairs so that they comply with the law. Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton was joined by other officers in the city's police department Thursday at the Advance Auto Parts on Veterans Memorial Highway to announce the collaboration. Mark Strenta, an Advance Auto Parts vice president, said this is the company's first partnership with any Cobb city, and the first to happen in one west of Atlanta. Advance Auto Parts already has similar partnerships with Sandy Springs and Lilburn, and Strenta hopes to expand to Peachtree City soon. Cobb County leaders were in the schools Thursday to read to students as part of Read Across America Day. Established by the National Education Association in 1998, Read Across America now offers year-round programming to encourage reading among students, and it does so by promoting books that students can both see themselves reflected in, as well as those that present experiences that may be different from their own. It also still marks March 2 as Read Across America Day, and all of March is National Reading Month. Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton read to fourth-grade students at Norton Park Elementary to recognize the event. As part of her “Read Across Cobb tour,” Cobb school board Nichelle Davis read to “Smyrna Elementary STARS” to celebrate the day. Another Cobb school board member, Leroy Tre' Hutchins, read to students at Riverside Elementary in Mableton.  Kennesaw State used three straight 3-pointers deep into the shot clock, including what may have been the biggest shot in the program's Division I history, to hold off Lipscomb 80-71 in the semifinals of the ASUN tournament at the KSU Convocation Center on Thursday. The Owls will now host the conference championship game for the first time. They will get a rematch with co-regular season champion Liberty on Sunday at 3 p.m. with the winner earning the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. It will be the first time KSU will play in the title game, and it will be the first game to be shown on national television from the Convocation Center, as ESPN 2 will broadcast it. If the Owls win on Sunday, they will clinch a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the program moved to Division one. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, stretching along the river for 48 miles through metro Atlanta, posted its highest ever number of visitors in 2022, the National Park Service announced Thursday. Some 3.5 million people are estimated to have visited the recreation area last year, representing an increase of about 9% from 2021. That outpaces the river's park service neighbor in Cobb, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, which had about 1.3 million visitors in 2022. Among all National Park Service units nationwide, the Chattahoochee ranked 21st in attendance. The park service said to avoid crowds, visitors are advised to visit NPS dot gov. A Cobb County police officer was involved in a car wreck Thursday morning. Police spokesperson Shenise Barner said the collision occurred around 7 a.m. near Atlanta Road at Bingham Street, in the Fair Oaks area. There were complaints of minor injuries, but Barner said this was not a “major crash.” Cobb's Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the incident. The Kennesaw Parks & Rec Department will have the annual Bunny Breakfast on April 1 at the Ben Robertson Community Center in Kennesaw. There will be two seatings available: 8 to 9:15 a.m. and 10 to 11:15 a.m. Attendees will be treated to a buffet including hot and ready pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage, as well as a medley of fresh fruit and breakfast sweets. Everyone's favorite cottontail will be making his way from table to table to say hello to all the boys and girls. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own camera to capture photos with the Easter Bunny. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased online or at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Advance purchase is required. Tickets are non-refundable after March 24. Children ages two and under do not need a ticket if they will be sitting in laps. New this year, experience the beauty of Smith-Gilbert Gardens at the annual Egg Hunt on April 1 with a combo Bunny Breakfast/Egg Hunt ticket. The Egg Hunt is open to children up to nine years of age. Cobb School Board votes to extend superintendent's contract

Marietta Daily Journal Podcast

During its Thursday night meeting, the Cobb County Board of Education voted 4-2-1 to extend Superintendent Chris Ragsdale's contract through 2026. Two of the board's Democrats, Leroy Tre' Hutchins and Becky Sayler, voted against extending the contract, while Democrat Nichelle Davis abstained. Davis said her newcomer status on the board led her to abstain. Since he was hired as district superintendent in 2015, Ragsdale's contract has been extended every year in February or March so that it remains at the maximum three years allowed under Georgia law. In February of last year, the board added one year to Ragsdale's contract, extending it through 2025. Ragsdale was paid a salary of $350,000 in 2022, and school board Chairman Brad Wheeler told the MDJ Thursday that Ragsdale's salary in the extended contract remains unchanged. Though it was not on the agenda for the board's meeting Thursday, the extension was a topic in the board's executive session that is closed to the public. The vote was cast during the subsequent public meeting Thursday night. In the last two years, the board's four Republicans stood behind the extension, while the board's three Democrats at the time — Hutchins, Dr. Jaha Howard and Charisse Davis — voted against it twice. Kennesaw State had five players in double figures and outscored Liberty 18-6 over the last 4:24 of the game to earn an 88-81 victory in arguably the biggest game in its Division I history Thursday. Not since a 2010 matchup and victory against Georgia Tech had the announced crowd of 3,059, which seemed more like 5,000 or 6,000, been as loud or seen a better basketball product on the floor of the KSU Convocation Center. The support helped bring the Owls back from a 14-point second-half deficit, and saw them take over solo first place in the ASUN. Kennesaw State , which is having its best season in its 18-year Division I history, leads Liberty by a full game with three games left to play in the race for the regular season title and the Number 1 seed in the conference tournament. Now, it will be important for Kennesaw State to come down off the emotional high and start to prepare for Queens on Saturday. It is the final home game of the year, and it will be key if the Owls hope to win that elusive first conference championship. The Cobb County School District is set to offer 500 of its educators the chance to obtain graduate degrees at no cost. The initiative, called Georgia's BEST, which stands for “Building Educator Success Together,” is made possible by a partnership between Cobb schools and the University of West Georgia, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced Thursday. The Cobb school board unanimously approved $500,000 of surplus funds from the district's current budget to jumpstart the initiative this year. Cobb teachers who apply and are accepted to the program will have the chance to start their studies as early as this summer, Ragsdale said. Cobb schools leadership will work with UWG to identify areas where the district has the highest need, such as special education and leadership, to determine which degrees will be offered to eligible employees. Through the partnership, UWG will discount tuition and fees for degrees pursued by the Cobb educators by as much as half. Cobb schools will pay for the degrees. A Marietta grocery store slated for closure on Powers Ferry Road may be razed and replaced with apartments and new retail, pending approval from the city. Atlanta-based developer William Casaday, under the company WC Acquisitions, is requesting a rezoning from the city to build 322 apartments and 6,000 square feet of retail at the site of the old Kroger at the corner of Powers Ferry and Delk roads. The 50,000-square-foot grocery store is slated for closure, as Kroger is building a new store just down the street in the Marketplace Terrell Mill shopping center. Once the new store is complete (scheduled for this spring), the old one, built in 1982, will be shuttered. In order for WC to redevelop the property, the city of Marietta will have to rezone it from a commercial category to a mixed-use category. The Marietta Planning Commission, a board which advises the City Council on zoning matters, is scheduled to hear the proposal at its March 1 meeting. The property is the furthest east within the city limits, surrounded on most sides by unincorporated Cobb County. Marietta City Schools Superintendent Grant Rivera has a new No. 2. On Wednesday, the Board of Education approved the hiring of Jami Frost as the district's new deputy superintendent. Frost, who will receive a salary of $210,000, joins Marietta schools from the county's other school system — the Cobb County School District, where she served as assistant superintendent of south-side elementary schools, overseeing daily operations for 22 schools. Frost replaces Belinda Walters-Brazile, who is retiring after 32 years in education, including six as Marietta's deputy superintendent. With more than 29 years of education experience, Frost worked for 13 years as a principal at two of Cobb's schools: Dowell and Ford elementary schools. She has also worked as an assistant principal and a teacher. Frost has a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in curriculum and teaching, both from Auburn University. She also has a master's degree in middle grades education. The General Assembly will get a choice this year whether to legalize gambling in Georgia by statute or constitutional amendment. Legislation introduced into the state House and Senate this week takes the constitutional amendment approach, which would put the issue to Georgia voters in a statewide referendum. The Senate version is limited to legalizing sports betting, while the House measure would also allow casinos and pari-mutuel betting on horse racing. Two bills introduced into the legislature earlier this year would legalize sports betting by statute. Avoiding the constitutional amendment route means they wouldn't have to gain two-thirds majorities in the House and Senate to pass. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com              See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brewery coming to downtown Austell

A brewery is coming to downtown Austell later this year, the developer of a mixed-use project announced. Frog Rock Brewing Company has signed a lease in the new development, dubbed Cincinnati Junction, and will open in late spring or early summer, according to Andrew Lundstrom, the project's developer. The brewery's interior will draw inspiration from the city's history — Austell was once known as Salt Springs, due to springs with supposedly medicinal qualities that were popular in the 19th century. Frog Rock also plans to have an outdoor beer garden with seating, fire pits and string lights, a bocce ball court and a music stage. Frog Rock will be the city's first microbrewery, per the developer. The brewery will join Austell CoWork, already open at the development. Two other businesses — a photo studio and a clothing boutique — have also signed leases, according to the developer. Terrell Burden scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Kennesaw State to a 74-71 come-from-behind victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday at the KSU Convocation Center. The win marked the first time in the Owls' Division I history in which they have won 20 games. It also sets up a first-place showdown with Liberty in Kennesaw on Thursday, which could end up deciding the ASUN Conference's regular-season title in the ASUN. The winner of the regular-season title is guaranteed at least a spot in the National Invitation Tournament. The Liberty game should bring one of the largest crowds in program history.. In addition to the game's significance, the athletic department is calling for a "gold rush," with the first 1,000 fans receiving a gold Kennesaw State T-shirt. A few weeks after Barnes & Noble announced its plans for a new store in the Avenue East Cobb, a developer said four new businesses will join the bookseller. Atlanta-based North American Properties announced women's fashion retailer Evereve, skin care studio Faced the Facial Studio, southern-style pizza joint Peach State Pizza and Belgian waffle purveyor Press Waffle Co. will be coming to the open-air mall. NAP said the move is part of its “ongoing efforts to redefine Avenue East Cobb as a hometown. The Evereve at the mall will be the store's third location in Georgia, with a grand opening scheduled for later this year, per NAP. Faced the Facial's 2,100-square-foot studio, designed by Square Feet Studio, will be located next to Warby Parker, and Peach State Pizza will boast a 3,560-square-foot restaurant with a front porch swing and vintage Georgia décor. Construction on Peach State Pizza is set to begin in the spring, with NAP aiming for a grand opening in the late summer. Finally, east Cobb locals and husband-wife duo Keith and Niki Ginel will be the franchise owners of the Avenue East Cobb's location of Press Waffle Co., which was founded in 2016 and later took off after an appearance on the hit ABC show “Shark Tank.” Press Waffle Co. will occupy 1,200 square feet of the forthcoming jewel box near Sephora, NAP said. Kennesaw Mountain used a five-run fifth inning to take control of the game and spoil the unveiling of Marietta's improved Jackie Smallwood Field with a 7-2 victory Friday. The Mustangs did not allow an earned run, and the pitching combination of left-hander Pete Jerzerinac and right-hander John Locurto combined to strike out 13 batters. Jerzerinac pitched the first four innings, allowing two hits and struck out nine to earn the win. Locurto pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit, and earned the save. Pete used an upper-80s fastball to keep the Blue Devils hitters off balance and then John, a sidearm submarine pitcher, used a variety of pitches and arm angles to finish them off. Marietta had an early 2-0 lead, but it was short lived, as the Mustangs used a big fifth inning to get the win. Over 80 friends and family members gathered at Kennesaw State University on Saturday morning to celebrate the life of Dr. Betty Siegel on the third anniversary of her death. “She was so into life. Into living life. And living it to the fullest. And wanted everybody else to have a taste of it,” university president Dr. Kathy Schwaig said at the beginning of the ceremony, which took place in the campus recreation center that bears Siegel's name. Schwaig described Siegel as a “Waffle House-loving, red glasses-wearing, daughter of a coal miner from Kentucky who loved learning and who set out into the world to use that love of learning to make a difference in the lives of others and to inspire a life of service in others.” Siegel became the University System of Georgia's first female president in 1981, serving as president of what was then Kennesaw College — it became a university in 1996 — for 25 years, making her the longest serving female president of a state university in the United States. From 3,500 students at the beginning of her tenure to a current enrollment of over 43,000 students, the university continues to grow and thrive, Schwaig stated. Siegel wanted students to have a community, not just a place to go to have an in-class experience, Schwaig said. Siegel added sports and residential facilities so students could have a “total experience,” a “life-changing experience,” Schwaig said. Austell is set to get a major residential development west of its downtown. Atlanta-based JMC Development requested the rezoning of 28 acres for 73 single-family homes off C.H. James Parkway across from the Norfolk Southern Whitaker Intermodal Terminal. The Austell City Council approved the request 5-1 at its meeting this week, with Councilman Marlin Lamar the lone vote in opposition. The application also included a request to annex the land from unincorporated Cobb County into the city. According to the application, the county did not object to the annexation request. Darrell Weaver, Austell's community affairs director, said the land was annexed into the city last April. The City Council also gave the green light to an initial proposal from city staff for a park on Jefferson Street in downtown Austell. There is no timetable on when construction on the park would begin, as it is still in the early planning stages.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Victor hosts today's episode as we head back to the ASUN Conference with a pair of coaches on different paths.   First, Eric Lopez chats with Liberty Head Coach Doctor Dot Richardson. The Flames look to cap off their final season in the ASUN with a third straight tournament championship and potentially more with a very-difficult non-conference schedule. Coach chats about the process behind that scheduling, her 2023 roster, her thoughts on their pending move to C-USA, and more.   Then, we are joined by one of the newest members of the ASUN in 2023, AS Austin Peay Head Coach Kassie Stanfill talks with In the Circle. Coach Stanfill already has 101 victories as she enters her 5th season as Head Coach. She chats with Eric about Austin Peay's move from the Ohio Valley into the A-SUN and the new rivalries she'll be having. Our In The Circle Fall Tour heads back to the Sunshine State and back into the ASUN for this episode. We welcome Stetson Head Coach Shellie Robinson back to the podcast as her Hatters get ready for their first Fall Ball matchup with UCF this weekend. Coach Robinson reflects on last season, where Stetson doubled their win total and made the ASUN Tournament on the season's final day. She shares her thoughts on being the head of the program, what to expect from her team in 2023, and getting pied in the face. FYI, it won't be the last time it happens.  After the interview, Victor Anderson breaks down some of the names to look for with Stetson this upcoming season and his perspective on seeing the marked improvement from the program under Coach Robinson in her first season. He also confided what led to all three Stetson coaches getting pied. He might have talked himself into getting one as well. You'll have to listen to find out what Victor said.
