Dan-e-o (Daniel Faraldo) is an award-winning Canadian Hip Hop artist, songwriter, and actor of Jamaican/Spanish descent. The critically acclaimed emcee will drop his 6th solo album, “Vigilante” on May 10th on all major streaming platforms via URBNET. Since Dan's single, “Cleanse My Soul” dropped earlier this year, fans and critics alike have been eagerly waiting the artist's new album. “Vigilante” is worth the wait! The album stays true to the social conscious of Dan-e-o. It is equal parts lyricism clinic and seething social commentary - from the graphic novel album cover to the unapologetic lyrical content. “Vigilante” harshly critiques social media misuse, talentless rappers, gun violence, anti-black racism, self-hatred, jealousy, and self-doubt. The rapper's commitment to irradiating negativity and the injustices that surround us is made clear by the album's title. “Vigilante” hits and hits hard and makes no apologies. Dan-e-o's successful 1996 debut single, “Dear Hip Hop” made the Hip Hop world sit up and pay attention. The artist has never looked back, earning the respect of fans, critics, and fellow artists. Not surprisingly, Dan-e-o leaves it all on the tracks. He is raw and unrepentant. “Vigilante” is not for the faint of heart. The album is the veteran Toronto lyricist's most provocative project to date. “Vigilante” is available on fire orange vinyl, CD, digital download and all digital streaming platforms via URBNET now! https://daneo-urbnet.bandcamp.com/album/vigilante Don't miss Dan-e-o's just released single and video “Like We” featuring 2-time Juno Award-winning Reggae artist, Blessed! https://s.disco.ac/rhwutkorfwek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee7EJOKGGKk His single release, “Supreme” featuring Nish dropped on April 19th. 'I'm not making records; I'm making history. Today, my man Tony and I made history with this interview." Maestro Fresh Wes. Maestro Fresh We is credited as the "Godfather of Canadian Hip Hop, " his debut album, Symphony in Effect, was a certified platinum album. In 2023, Maestro Fresh Wes became the first hip-hop artist inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. His song Let Your Backbone Slide" is the first rap song inducted into the Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame. What did Drake have to say about Maestro Fresh Wes and his influence on him and Canadian music? What advice did Chuck D of Public Enemy offer? You'll have to listen to find out. ‘Fresh' is part of Wes Williams' stage name, and Fresh is how I would describe his perspective and attitude. This story has so many beats. You will take away so much from how Wes approaches life and career. I consider this essential listening for young people as they must diversify and stay relevant throughout their careers. Stay tuned to the show's end when Mark Beckles, the Vice President of Social Impact and Innovation, returns to Chatter that Matters to discuss First Up by RBC X Music and RBC Future Launch. WELCOME TO B-SIDES AND BEERS EPISODE 89! TONIGHT WE'RE TALKIN CANADIAN HIP-HOP!
Building A Black Archive (BABA) is a community archive that unearths and documents Contemporary Black Canadian Histories & Experiences as well as histories and experiences within the African Diaspora. BABA's work includes workshops, speaking engagements, community archival work, consultations and an annual artist residency program for Black artists. BABA was started in 2019 by Alannah Johnson and Jonsaba Jabbi who were connected through a mutual friend and shared many similarities unbeknownst to them. BABA exists in an interesting space in the sense that we are not an institutional archive but we also don't exist within the traditional community archives frame. The best way to describe the type of archiving we do is through the practice of alternative archives using oral histories, memory work and new media technologies as a way to make our archives accessible to members of the Black community. Since 2019, BABA has hosted three artist residencies which over 15 artists have attended. They have given over 20 workshops and talks on community archives and Black Canadian Cultural Production through Canadian Hip Hop to academic institutions, galleries and others. The themes of the residencies have included: Hip Hop and the Black Experience in Ontario 1980-2010, Mapping Black Geographies in Canada and Archiving Every Day Black Life. Recently, Jonsaba Jabbi and Alannah Johnson of Building A Black Archive (BABA) were on our show. During our conversation, Jonsaba and Alannah talked about: – Jonsaba and Alannah share a little about themselves – Their experience with Black Canadian history before starting BABA – Their first meeting – The start of BABA – The story behind the name of the organization – BABA's first big win – BABA's first event – Some of BABA's projects so far – BABA's artist residency – Some obstacles/roadblocks in their journey and what they have learned – BABA celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop – What are they excited about – How can we help them – Have they approached educational institutions? – Suggestions on helping Black youth You can find out more about Building A Black Archive (BABA) via: Instagram Facebook Email Visit The Dr. Vibe Show™ at https://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ Please feel free to email us at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Subscribe to The Dr. Vibe Show™ YouTube channel here Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook Fan Page here God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith, Dr. Vibe 2020 Podcast News Award Winner – Canadian Ethnic Media Association 2018 Innovation Award Winner – Canadian Ethnic Media Association The Dr. Vibe Show™ At “The Good Men Project” One of the first Brand Ambassador's – Cuisine Noir Magazine Dr. Vibe – Producer And Co-host of Black Men Talking On WJMS Radio Dr. Vibe on HuffPost Live – August 2, 2013 2013 Black Weblog Awards Finalist (Best Podcast) 2012 Black Weblog Awards Winner (Best International Blog) 2012 Black Weblog Awards Finalist (Best Podcast) 2011 Black Weblog Awards Finalist (Best International Blog and Best Podcast Series) Black Blog Of The Day – Black Bloggers Network – June 23, 2011 Twitter Twitter hashtag: #DrVibe The Dr. Vibe Show™ – iTunes The Dr. Vibe Show™ – Spotify Dr. Vibe Media – You Tube The Dr. Vibe Show™ – Stitcher Radio The Dr. Vibe Show™ – TuneIn Radio The Dr. Vibe Show™ – Google Play Music The Dr. Vibe Show™ – iHeartRadio The Dr. Vibe Show™ at Anchor Linkedin – The Dr. Vibe Show™ Instagram The Dr. Vibe Show Facebook Fan Page

Today on the show we are joined with multi Juno award nominated producer Fresh Kils. What separates Kils from your average producer is his mind blowing live sets that takes the audience on a fricken ride. He is a true pioneer of Canadian Hip Hop while also incorporating things like Led Zeppelin, Tenacious D, Transformers, The Price Is Right, Muhammed Ali, and many other music/pop culture treasures into his act. His performance is incomparable to any thing we ever seen and it was an absolute pleasure to finally pick his brain on a deeper level about it after all these years.
In the first half-hour, Guest Host Anne Keala Kelly (Kanaka Maoli) presents an update on Thacker Pass. Two years ago, activist-lawyer Will Falk, and activist-photographer, Max Wilbert started an occupation to stop construction of a proposed lithium mine in Thacker Pass, Nevada, known as Peehee Mu'huh in Paiute. On January 5, 2023, they, along with members from two of the affected tribes, four environmental groups and a local rancher appeared in Reno's federal court in opposition to the project. Keep updated at https://www.protectthackerpass.org/ In the second half-hour, Tiokasin speaks with Plex, an award winning hip-hop artist and producer based in Barrie, Ontario. Plex has almost 30 years of experience and has raised the bar among his Indigenous peers, while building a strong and relevant presence in Canadian Hip-Hop. He released his debut solo album in 2009 and has since toured across the U.S. and Canada performing, teaching workshops to Indigenous youth and running his independent record label, New Leaf Entertainment. In 2022, ten years after his last album release, Plex presents his latest 12-song LP, “Who Am I To Judge.” The album speaks directly about Plex's” features collaborations with many artists from both the hip-hop and Indigenous communities, including Lady Luck, Kryple, Drezus, Touch and Rellik. Hello and welcome to episode 69 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!I’m going to start the show with a little-known fact… For most of my life, I tiptoed around in order to go unnoticed. I was passionate about the performing arts, however, I was way too shy to become a performer. As a photographer, makeup artist, journalist, artist manager, and publicist I could remain behind the scenes, but becoming a coach changed that for me. As a creativity coach, we dig deep into core values, limiting beliefs, and personal motivation for achieving goals. Encouraging my clients to show up authentically, to share vulnerabilities, and to push through their comfort zones motivates me to lead by example and do the same. Now when I notice I am procrastinating on something I examine the why behind it, what fear or limiting belief am I holding on to? Then I work to push through. And I’m grateful for the change! Listeners have heard me say before that the reason I got into coaching was out of frustration that too many artists were coming to me for publicity before they were really ready. In order to get media attention these days, you need a professional brand, interesting stories, and an active social media following. Through coaching I can guide you through developing those step by step, however, lately, I’m realizing that in my attempts to give the people what they want which is for me to teach them about social media and dyi publicity that I’ve started to allow clients to again skip over the foundational work. The foundation is personal branding which is all about expressing your authentic self in all its glory. It is exploring and celebrating your personality, interests, life experiences, core values, beliefs, skills, strengths, and even your weaknesses. It is deeply personal work that I believe strongly that you can’t have long-lasting success if you skip it. I’m sharing this because it is good to take a step back and remember the why behind your vision and notice if you are going off track. So you may notice on the podcast or things I share on social media that I’m going to return to focus on the foundations more so than giving you social media and publicity tips. My guest today knows all about sticking to your vision so much so that Stick to your vision has grown from a song that he wrote and recorded to a book to Ted talks to being a major part of his personal and professional brand. Maestro Fresh Wes is a multi-award-winning recording artist, and the first Canadian Hip Hop artist to have a single hit Gold status on the charts. His iconic 1989 album Symphony In Effect was the first to receive a JUNO Award for Best Rap Recording of the Year, as well as the first Canadian Hip Hop album to go Platinum. A true pioneer, he was also the first Canadian hip hop artist to have a song rank on Billboard’s Top 20 Rap Singles chart, and in 2019 “Let Your Backbone Slide” became the first rap song inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.Maestro’s songs “Reach For The Sky (feat. Classified and Blue Rodeo)” and “The Distance (feat. Saukrates)” were featured throughout the Olympics, 2014 Winter, and 2016 Summer, respectively. As an actor, Williams has appeared on numerous film and television projects, including The Line — for which he was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series — and as the character of Paul Dwyer in the CBC hit sitcom, Mr. D. He has been inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame, received the 2003 Reel World Film Festival Trailblazer Award, and was a guest speaker for the Governor-General of Canada’s Summit on Urban Arts. Williams’ paths as both an author and motivational speaker merged with the release of his motivational book, Stick To Your Vision with its foreword written by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, and content long-credited for inspiring fellow Canadian hip hop star Drake.Canada’s indisputable Godfather of hip hop has just unveiled his newest release — an inspirational children’s book, Stick To Your Vision: Young Maestro Goes to School. How is that for an introduction…the man is a legend and a super sweet guy too. I hope you enjoy our conversation.Links and a transcript visit http://singdanceactthrive.com/069

Hello and welcome to episode 35 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!Today’s guest is widely considered one of Toronto’s Hip Hop legends, Solitair’s many contributions have made an indelible impact on the Canadian urban music landscape, and the music industry as a whole. In 1999, at the age of 23, Solitair made his mainstream musical debut on Choclair’s first major label album, ‘Ice Cold’, producing 4 songs and featured on several others. The album went Gold (50,000 units sold) in less than 30 days. Though he saw great success in his previous releases, Solitair’s breakout came in 2001 when he released two iconic Canadian Hip Hop songs: “Bakardi Slang” by Kardinal Offishall - produced by Solitair with his unique style combining island music sensibilities with Hip Hop’s gritty urban soundscape and ‘Easy to Slip’ by Solitair - a song he wrote as an ode to fallen friends, which continues to be hailed as one of Canada’s greatest Hip Hop songs and received a Juno nomination for Best Rap Recording. As Solitair came into prominence as a highly sought after producer, he worked on albums by a number of Canadian heavyweights, including: Choclair, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, k-os, Maestro Fresh Wes’ and The Rascalz. With Kardinal, he has travelled the world performing as part of his world renowned stage show.In 2014 Soliair and three other producers partnered up on the recording studio, 4Sound Media. Since taking the reins, he’s been recording, mixing, mentoring, and collaborating with many of Hip Hop's most talented emerging artists, and continues to work on adding more great songs to his musical legacy. After 20-years in the music industry, Solitair gives back to the community of Toronto by speaking to at-risk youth in high schools and has recently been working with F-You: The Forgiveness Project who are working with young men currently serving time in the Canadian prison system. With the founder of the F-You project, Tara Muldoon, Solitair is working on a podcast and that is how I came to meet this wonderful talent and invited him on the show. For links & transcript visit http://singdanceactthrive.com/035 It was so great to hear from Solitair, he is so nice and humble. I am a big fan of our Canadian hip hop pioneers and Kardinal and Maestro are also on my list of artists that I have to get on the show this year. I’ve met Kardinal quite a few times and he is also very nice and humble. Oh and Michee Me, I met her before too…oh maybe this is my new thing. I’ll call out people I want on the show on the show. If anyone has a connection to Questlove, Jimmy Jam or Ice-T hook me up! I have a ton of others but I’ll stick with hip hop for this episode. Oh and I meant to have Doodlebug from Digable Planets on the show since before this podcast even started so I’ll reach out to him again.

If you've ever referred to Toronto as “Tdot,” a term coined by K4ce, a local hip hop legend or by its more recent name, “The 6ix” influenced largely by the OVO team and rapper Drake's recent album, ‘Views from the 6,” then you are familiar with the far reaching influence of Canadian Hip Hop. Recognizing the potential for hip hop to transcend intergenerational barriers, Dr. Mark Campbell, Ontario Certified school teacher and Professor at Ryerson University, and his team, created the Northside Hip Hop Archive (NSHH) and a series of accompanying archival exhibits to re-engage students at all grade levels and preserve an integral piece of Canadian history. The NSHH is intended to be a tool to produce engaging, new curriculum content for school boards across Canada. Dr. Campbell currently teaches two inclusive courses on Race & Racism in Popular Culture from Antiblackness to Intersectionality and Sonic Innovations in Black Musics: From Dubplates to Controllerism at Ryerson RTA. “Uncovering hip hop histories in Canada are essential work if we are to imagine an inclusive, multicultural and diverse country. Without access to the successes, innovations and creativity of previous generations, we cannot provide in the classroom a solid context the next generation to strive towards excellence,” says Dr. Campbell. Since the archive launched in 2010, there have been multiple archival exhibits held to raise public awareness. On March 4th 2010, NSHH held its first exhibit, the T-Dot Pioneers Exhibition in Toronto. A year later, CBC and NSHH joined forces to launch “The Hip Hop Summit,” a week-long celebration of Canadian hip hop. In November of 2016, NSHH Archive in association with the Royal Ontario Museum, Ryerson University and The Masterplan Show at CIUT 89.5fm launched its first ever Archive Fellows honouring the lifetime achievements of Toronto's DJ Ron Nelson from CKLN's Fantastic Voyage Show (1983-1990) and the visual art of Hamilton's Leon ‘Eklipz' Robinson. Also in 2016, the NSHH started the “I Was There” project, a community activation project honouring the work of various hip hop culture pioneers in five cities across Canada which started in 2016 and is continuing into 2017. “The I Was There project is about acknowledging the Architects of hip hop communities in several Canadian cities as well as about creating public awareness and appreciation about hip hop's legacy in our country,” says Dr. Campbell. The “I Was There” project celebrates the accomplishments of little known hip hop legends in Canada, adding personalized archival collections and narration to the existing archival content on www.nshharchive.ca. This year's exhibits will be held in Montreal, Saskatoon, Hamilton, Toronto and Regina. Over the years, participants have included legendary Canadian names in hip hop such as: Dalton Higgins, Citizen Kane, Ghetto Concept, Michie Mee, Kardi, K'naan, Dream Warriers, Saukrates, Shad, DJ Ron Nelson, Leon' Eklipz' Robinson, DJ Kool Herc and more. Recently, Mr. Campbell was on our show talking about the Northside Hip Hop Archives. During our conversation, Mr. Campbell talked about: – Some of his early hip hop memories – The story behind his hip hop show that he started in the 1990's at eighteen years old for seventeen years – How did Northside Hip Hop Archives start – Some of the stories and people that are featured via Northside Hip Hop Archives – How has the Toronto hip hop scene has changed – The future of the Northside Hip Hop Archives – The state of Canadian Hip Hop – What is on the website You can contact Mr. Campbell via: North Side Hip Hop NorthSide Hip Hop Archive – Twitter NorthSide Hip Hop Archive – Facebook Mark Campbell Mark Campbell – Twitter Email Please feel free to email us at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook fan page at “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook Fan Page Visit our website at http://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith, Dr. Vibe
Hip Hop is no stranger to Canada’s groundbreaking and premier production competition known as “Battle of the Beat Makers,” which has birthed some of today’s hottest producers in the industry. What some people may not know is the man and innovator behind this legendary come up, Clifton Reddick, known as “KLFTN” in the industry. Now, the originator of the iconic movement has announced today the release of ‘Toronto Sound,’ a memoir devoted to the city’s rising producers."Drake's primary producer, Noah "40" Shebib, was quoted as saying that the Toronto Sound began with Boi-1da, and Boi-1da was discovered at Battle of the Beat Makers (BBM), so essentially without BBM there would be no Toronto Sound. We are the foundation of everything major that has come out of Toronto since 2005. This memoir will paint the picture of exactly how it all went down,” says book author KLFTN.As a cultural ambassador of Canadian Hip-Hop, KLFTN details the role that his famous Battle of the Beat Makers competition played in assisting in the development of careers of familiar artists like Drake, Boi-1da and T-Minus, while exposing us to a litany of other rappers and producers who have helped to establish Toronto's Hip-Hop scene over the course of three decades.
