We were elated to welcome back GIL MASUDA into the lounge space and he brought along a first-timer to The Lounge Presents, SAUKRATES. The two recently dropped the incredibly funky Driftin', available now via Love Touch Records' Bandcamp and streaming everywhere. They dropped some news re: future releases so keep your eyes peeled for that next.
Gil Masuda luxuriates in smooth grooves from Masterfonk, Don Blackman, Michael Wycoff and Love Touch sureshots from Saukrates, Ivana Santilli and more. On the podcast this week, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine welcome David "Gordo" Strickland, one of the pioneers of hip-hop production and recording in Canada. He's an Indigenous, Toronto-born and based award-winning engineer, mixer, producer and DJ. Known for being behind the boards on iconic hip-hop and R&B records for over two decades, his work has graced seminal tracks by the likes of Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, EPMD, Keith Murray, Redman and Method Man, to records by ground-breaking Toronto hip-hop acts, including Drake, k-os, Ghetto Concept, Jelleestone, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, and Choclair. David's two most recent collaborative albums, Spirit Of Hip Hop (2020, Entertainment One) and Spirit Of Hip Hop: Elements (2022), highlights some of North America's hip-hop progenitors and innovative Indigenous artists alike to share an embodiment of the teachings, art, traditions, and music of the community, aligned with his Indigenous heritage. In this chat, David tells Mike about how he got his start and built his engineering skills, being thrown into the fire as a newbie on an album by Saukrates, and working his way through the industry from there.

Episode 103 is the 3rd installment of our indie hip-hop tribute series. This time, we're joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it? We've got joints by Non Phixion, Saukrates, Natural Elements, Jigmastas, J-Live, Arsonists, Company Flow, Cage, All Natural, Rascalz, Cannibal Ox, J.U.I.C.E., Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, Ill Advised, Choclair, Mr. Lif, Mike Zoot and of course, The High & Mighty. What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical. Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. Hello and welcome to episode 69 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!I’m going to start the show with a little-known fact… For most of my life, I tiptoed around in order to go unnoticed. I was passionate about the performing arts, however, I was way too shy to become a performer. As a photographer, makeup artist, journalist, artist manager, and publicist I could remain behind the scenes, but becoming a coach changed that for me. As a creativity coach, we dig deep into core values, limiting beliefs, and personal motivation for achieving goals. Encouraging my clients to show up authentically, to share vulnerabilities, and to push through their comfort zones motivates me to lead by example and do the same. Now when I notice I am procrastinating on something I examine the why behind it, what fear or limiting belief am I holding on to? Then I work to push through. And I’m grateful for the change! Listeners have heard me say before that the reason I got into coaching was out of frustration that too many artists were coming to me for publicity before they were really ready. In order to get media attention these days, you need a professional brand, interesting stories, and an active social media following. Through coaching I can guide you through developing those step by step, however, lately, I’m realizing that in my attempts to give the people what they want which is for me to teach them about social media and dyi publicity that I’ve started to allow clients to again skip over the foundational work. The foundation is personal branding which is all about expressing your authentic self in all its glory. It is exploring and celebrating your personality, interests, life experiences, core values, beliefs, skills, strengths, and even your weaknesses. It is deeply personal work that I believe strongly that you can’t have long-lasting success if you skip it. I’m sharing this because it is good to take a step back and remember the why behind your vision and notice if you are going off track. So you may notice on the podcast or things I share on social media that I’m going to return to focus on the foundations more so than giving you social media and publicity tips. My guest today knows all about sticking to your vision so much so that Stick to your vision has grown from a song that he wrote and recorded to a book to Ted talks to being a major part of his personal and professional brand. Maestro Fresh Wes is a multi-award-winning recording artist, and the first Canadian Hip Hop artist to have a single hit Gold status on the charts. His iconic 1989 album Symphony In Effect was the first to receive a JUNO Award for Best Rap Recording of the Year, as well as the first Canadian Hip Hop album to go Platinum. A true pioneer, he was also the first Canadian hip hop artist to have a song rank on Billboard’s Top 20 Rap Singles chart, and in 2019 “Let Your Backbone Slide” became the first rap song inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.Maestro’s songs “Reach For The Sky (feat. Classified and Blue Rodeo)” and “The Distance (feat. Saukrates)” were featured throughout the Olympics, 2014 Winter, and 2016 Summer, respectively. As an actor, Williams has appeared on numerous film and television projects, including The Line — for which he was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series — and as the character of Paul Dwyer in the CBC hit sitcom, Mr. D. He has been inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame, received the 2003 Reel World Film Festival Trailblazer Award, and was a guest speaker for the Governor-General of Canada’s Summit on Urban Arts. Williams’ paths as both an author and motivational speaker merged with the release of his motivational book, Stick To Your Vision with its foreword written by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, and content long-credited for inspiring fellow Canadian hip hop star Drake.Canada’s indisputable Godfather of hip hop has just unveiled his newest release — an inspirational children’s book, Stick To Your Vision: Young Maestro Goes to School. How is that for an introduction…the man is a legend and a super sweet guy too. I hope you enjoy our conversation.Links and a transcript visit http://singdanceactthrive.com/069

David’s perspective, “The DJ is the Drummer; the MC is the Storyteller, the B-boy is the Dancer and the Graffiti Artist is the Sand Painter” is rooted in Spirit Of Hip-Hop, as he emerges from behind the boards to share an embodiment of the teachings, art, traditions, and music of the community, aligned with his Indigenous heritage. Amongst an extensive collaboration roster, the album includes Indigenous rappers such as Supaman, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Artson, Que Rock, Drezus, Leonard Sumner, Joey Styles, and more, while North American hip-hop legends EPMD, Saukrates, Def Squad (Redman, Erick Sermon, Keith Murray), Maestro Fresh Wes, and a posthumous verse from King Reign, are brought into the fold. David is passionate about the plight of the Mi'kmaq people and recognition of his family lineage can be traced back by five generations. He is committed to restoring the dignity and respect stripped by an unconstitutional agreement that remove and denied Indian status from thousands of people.

David is passionate about the plight of the Mi'kmaq people and recognition of his family lineage can be traced back by five generations. He is committed to restoring the dignity and respect stripped by an unconstitutional agreement that remove and denied Indian status from thousands of people.

David Strickland is a Grammy Award winning multidisciplinary artist, producer, engineer, DJ and activist. We discuss his music and visual art influences, how connected Indigenous cultures are to hip-hop and his experience with having his Indian status revoked. David shares what it was like working with Drake and the OVO camp and hip-hop legends like EPMD, Redman, Method Man, Kardinal Offishall, Saukrates and Keith Murray. We also talk about his respect for photographer Ernie Paniccioli, why he thinks it’s important for creatives to not get stagnant and lazy but why it’s also important to slow down. On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is Toronto hip-hop legend Choclair. Now this is a bucket list interview for me. The Toronto hip-hop scene that came from the late 1990s which also included Kardinal Offishall, Saukrates, and Maestro Fresh Wes, among many others, is so personally special to me. As someone who has frequented Toronto throughout my life, its like a second home to me. My goal is to get all those names I just named on this podcast and we are one down with Choclair. During our conversation, we reminisce about the Toronto hip-hop scene from the 90s, along with breaking down his career during albums like 1999's Ice Cold, 2002's Memoirs of Blake Savage. We also get into the lessons he's learned over the years in his storied music career, his beginnings in music, the aesthetics of Toronto as a city and its artistry, and so much more! Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. Choclair chose fellow Toronto hip-hop pioneer Maestro Fresh Wes. Episode 8 is our Jansport (backpack) special. A tribute to the independent hip-hop movement that helped spawn labels like Fondle ‘Em, Hydra, Rawkus, Stones Throw, Def Jux and ABB records. A time, where the internet played a major role in the music. This era allowed people to DIY, giving them an outlet never had. This movement created dreams, jobs, life-long careers and of course, some amazing music too. Speaking of music, if we covered everything this episode would be 20 hours instead of 2. We picked obscure cuts all the way to classics heard from the late 90s to the early 00s. We got everybody from Mos Def, Company Flow, MF Doom, Murs, Planet Asia, J-Live, Juggaknots, Weatherman, Saukrates, Jigmastas, Cannibal Ox, L-Fudge, Godfather Don, All Natural, Non-Phixon, Cage, Latryx, Mr. Voodoo, K-Otix, and Vakill to name a few. You don’t want to miss this!
If you've ever referred to Toronto as “Tdot,” a term coined by K4ce, a local hip hop legend or by its more recent name, “The 6ix” influenced largely by the OVO team and rapper Drake's recent album, ‘Views from the 6,” then you are familiar with the far reaching influence of Canadian Hip Hop. Recognizing the potential for hip hop to transcend intergenerational barriers, Dr. Mark Campbell, Ontario Certified school teacher and Professor at Ryerson University, and his team, created the Northside Hip Hop Archive (NSHH) and a series of accompanying archival exhibits to re-engage students at all grade levels and preserve an integral piece of Canadian history. The NSHH is intended to be a tool to produce engaging, new curriculum content for school boards across Canada. Dr. Campbell currently teaches two inclusive courses on Race & Racism in Popular Culture from Antiblackness to Intersectionality and Sonic Innovations in Black Musics: From Dubplates to Controllerism at Ryerson RTA. “Uncovering hip hop histories in Canada are essential work if we are to imagine an inclusive, multicultural and diverse country. Without access to the successes, innovations and creativity of previous generations, we cannot provide in the classroom a solid context the next generation to strive towards excellence,” says Dr. Campbell. Since the archive launched in 2010, there have been multiple archival exhibits held to raise public awareness. On March 4th 2010, NSHH held its first exhibit, the T-Dot Pioneers Exhibition in Toronto. A year later, CBC and NSHH joined forces to launch “The Hip Hop Summit,” a week-long celebration of Canadian hip hop. In November of 2016, NSHH Archive in association with the Royal Ontario Museum, Ryerson University and The Masterplan Show at CIUT 89.5fm launched its first ever Archive Fellows honouring the lifetime achievements of Toronto's DJ Ron Nelson from CKLN's Fantastic Voyage Show (1983-1990) and the visual art of Hamilton's Leon ‘Eklipz' Robinson. Also in 2016, the NSHH started the “I Was There” project, a community activation project honouring the work of various hip hop culture pioneers in five cities across Canada which started in 2016 and is continuing into 2017. “The I Was There project is about acknowledging the Architects of hip hop communities in several Canadian cities as well as about creating public awareness and appreciation about hip hop's legacy in our country,” says Dr. Campbell. The “I Was There” project celebrates the accomplishments of little known hip hop legends in Canada, adding personalized archival collections and narration to the existing archival content on www.nshharchive.ca. This year's exhibits will be held in Montreal, Saskatoon, Hamilton, Toronto and Regina. Over the years, participants have included legendary Canadian names in hip hop such as: Dalton Higgins, Citizen Kane, Ghetto Concept, Michie Mee, Kardi, K'naan, Dream Warriers, Saukrates, Shad, DJ Ron Nelson, Leon' Eklipz' Robinson, DJ Kool Herc and more. Recently, Mr. Campbell was on our show talking about the Northside Hip Hop Archives. During our conversation, Mr. Campbell talked about: – Some of his early hip hop memories – The story behind his hip hop show that he started in the 1990's at eighteen years old for seventeen years – How did Northside Hip Hop Archives start – Some of the stories and people that are featured via Northside Hip Hop Archives – How has the Toronto hip hop scene has changed – The future of the Northside Hip Hop Archives – The state of Canadian Hip Hop – What is on the website You can contact Mr. Campbell via: North Side Hip Hop NorthSide Hip Hop Archive – Twitter NorthSide Hip Hop Archive – Facebook Mark Campbell Mark Campbell – Twitter Email Please feel free to email us at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook fan page at “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook Fan Page Visit our website at http://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith, Dr. Vibe
You don't want to miss this!
In Sarah Jay Switches Lanez, episode 26 of Lasers on the Ride, Sarah Jay, Associate Editor-in-Chief at Hip Hop Canada, joins the Lasers to talk rap music and make some jokes. The episode kicks off when Sarah blows minds with the reveal of Jewish Sesame Street and delivers some insight into the Orthodox Jewish community in Calgary. The group speaks vices, whether weed makes you lazy (100% of moms say yes), and fashion blogs. Sarah names names on some rappers (MGK stand up) and the group clears the air between Sarah and Akil. Politics in Rap (trademark) is broached, Canadian rappers are discussed and the group talks circumcision, with Akil and Mike taking strong stances for and against. The group talks favorite rappers, calls out some least favorites, and plays what colour is Memphis Bleek’s durag?
2016 is here, crazy isn't it? Where did 2015 go? Feels like the year flew by, no worries though we got you covered. Press play and bump some of our favorite tunes from 2015, lots of music on this episode plus our brand of comedic randomness as usual.
