We Radio GDR hosts all agree on this simple truth - our favorite interviews are of you the listeners and members of the Facebook group. Jeff Myers joined the group in January of 2022 and has proceeded to post some of the most captivating photos of his trip to the GDR in 1987. From pictures of old East Berlin to Trabants to an eerie "teaching assistant" Stasi officer observing a class, Jeff's pictures tell a story of a trip he's never forgotten. Today an Associate professor at Wake Tech Community College and host of the Let's Talk Wake Tech Travel podcast, Jeff went to the GDR in 1987 as a study abroad participant at Salzburg College where he took a class on capitalism vs. communism. The trip to the GDR inspired his love of travel, and he's been to 54 countries including Cuba, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, and even North Korea in 2007. He has taken 23 trips with his students and teaches at his former study abroad college, Salzburg College, every summer. Join us as Jeff tells us about his trip behind the Berlin Wall.

The first, directed by Anton Corbijn, was filmed in Berlin and features the band members performing at Hansa Studios interspersed with footage of Trabants (an East German automobile they became fond of as a symbol for a changing Europe) and shots of them dressed in drag. However, the band pulled the video, fearing the single's status as an AIDS benefit would result in critics finding AIDS-related interpretations of the video.Peter Gabriel - “I Grieve”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ3wpjdYMqk Deftones - “Minerva”https://youtu.be/mLa0-sQg1YMFartbart Albumhttps://youtu.be/EORf0IvEXKo Cranberries - “Linger”https://youtu.be/G6Kspj3OO0s
Until now, only 127 professions in Cuba were allowed to have an element of private participation to them. The rest were controlled and administered by the government; that figure will be raised to more than 2,000 professions; we hear more from Will Grant, the BBC's Cuba Correspondent. Sales of classic cars have not crashed despite the pandemic, with people buying Morris Minors, Ford Capris and even Trabants and Ladas. We speak to John Mayhead, editor of Haggerty's Price Guide and Kiril Vitanov, a Bulgarian man living in Cambridge who drives a Russian Volga M21, the same kind of car owned by astronaut Yuri Gagarin. Spanish farmers have condemned the central government's move to declare the Iberian wolf a protected species and farmers are extremely angry, many claiming that romantic city-dweller notions of wolves in the moonlight are at odds with the reality farmers face of potential threats to livestock; we speak to the BBC's Madrid correspondent, Guy Hedgecoe. Plus, we hear from Mariana Mazzucato, a high-profile economist noted for her advocacy for more active state involvement in the economy. She's calling on governments to solve some of our most pressing problems by taking inspiration from the mission-driven methods of the Apollo project.
Live Performance by Trabants
It’s the summer of 1953, and, across East Germany, angry people take to the streets. This isn’t a polite street protest. This is a furious, red flag ripping, police beating, office burning rampage. The crowds demand: - better living conditions; - the reunification of Germany; and - free elections. Instead, they would get: - Trabants; - the Berlin Wall; and - another 35 years of hardline Communist government. Could the 17 June 1953 uprising have ever been successful at bringing down Soviet-dominated eastern Europe? Or were the people’s protests doomed to fail before they even started? Liebe Menschen, meine Freunde! Macht echt was her. Auf der dortigen Webseite findet man alles, was man wissen will.
