Obviamente el plato fuerte es comentar su participación en la creación de los discos The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Passengers, All That You Can't Leave Behind y No Line On The Horizon. La lista de artistas mencionados en este capítulo es gigante, desde David Bowie a Robert Fripp, Daniel Lanois, Roxy Music, Vangelis, Simple Minds, James, Japan y David Sylvian Talking Heads y David Byrne, Genesis y Phil Collins... y si, Coldplay. This episode looks at Johnny Cash's “The American Recordings”, a series of 6 albums released on American Records between 1994 and 2010.  By 1994, when he signed to Rick Rubin's American Records, it looked like Cash's career was all but done. However, Rubin had other ideas and, over the next 10 years, worked with Cash to produce some of the most memorable work of his career. Part of this process involved Cash covering songs by some of the greatest artists of the late 20th Century - U2, Nine Inch Nails, Nick Cave, Tom Petty and Leonard Cohen.  He's not performing the songs in his usual country style, but simply as Johnny Cash.  It's a great story, with a fabulous playlist! Jeff's found 5 bands you would not believe exist, including Mac Sabbath, a parody of Black Sabbath with lyrics about fast food, and Shat, a band that is offensive in every possible way, whose lead singer's costumes are draped with dildoes!  Our "Album you must listen to before you die" is “Arrival” by Abba.  Reviewers weren't convinced.  Neither is Jeff.  Have a listen and see what Mick thought. References: Winny Puhh, The Residents, Mac Sabbath, Shat, TISM, Taylor Swift, Tortured Poets Department, Abba, Arrival, American Records, Rick Rubin, Def Jam, Shel Silverstein, “A Boy Named Sue”, “Solitary Man”, The Highwaymen, The Man in Black, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, June Carter Cash, “Bitter Tears”, “Ballad of Ira Hayes”, Bruce Springsteen, “Highway Patrolman”, U2, Zooropa, “The Wanderer”, “Personal Jesus”, “The Mercy Seat”,  “Streets of Laredo”, John Cale   Johnny Cash American Recordings – Full albums Johnny Cash – Our episode playlist Discogs' listing of all 6 covers Interview with Rick Rubin re “Hurt”  Ten Bands you Won't Believe Exist

U2 came home after the Outside Broadcast Tour completing a wildly successful 1992 that saw the band reinvent themselves on record and as a live act. It was supposed to be a six month break before returning for the European leg the next summer. But Edge was still looking for a diversion from his marriage falling apart and convinces the band to make a 4 or 5 song EP. Bono, not ready to downshift back into domesticity, ups the ante and says if we're going to all that trouble we may as well make it a full album: A weird and wonderful left turn called Zooropa...and a kind of wayward experimentation U2 would never feel comfortable making again.

But also, that's a refrain from arguably the most commercially viable song from John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band's “Some Time In New York City”. So why wasn't the semi-title track a single? Why didn't it lead off the album; not enough racial epithets in the title? And who in the love of Danza decided “Angela” - a heart-wrenching tribute to Judith Light - belongs on ANY Lennon comp? So many preguntas! Como siempre, hablamos de muchas cosas entremedio, como: Pruebas coeficiente 2 y familiares funados The Beatles y Get Back, Soda Stereo, The Police, Radiohead y Coldplay (otra vez) ¿Bono es musical o no? What the Riff?!?

Candlebox had a seemingly immediate success with their self-titled debut album in July 1993.  The group had formed in November of 1990, with lead singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado as the founding members.  They performed in clubs around Seattle, a musical mecca at the time that benefitted from the grunge movement, and released an EP that got the attention of the new Maverick Records.  Maverick would sign Candlebox, and the group would be the studio's successful act.  While grunge was still king in Seattle and on the air waves at the time, Candlebox does not neatly fit into that category.  Some of the band's work has a grunge feel, but it tends towards a more mainstream hard rock sound in general.  The debut album Candlebox would peak at number 7 on the Billboard album charts, and would see a number of singles hit both the radio and video charts.  The strength of their songs would land them as openers for Rush and Metallica, and they would be headlining their own tours by the end of 1994.Despite the rapid success, the popularity of Candlebox was a slower burn at the time.  The album did not enter the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart until August of 1994, and initial reviews were mixed.  However, the album would remain on the chart for 104 weeks, and would be certified 4x platinum in the United States.Candlebox would release three albums with Maverick Records before running into disputes, and they disbanded in 2000.  A revised lineup would reappear in 2006, and a new album would be released in 2007.  As of this podcast Candlebox has released seven albums and is still performing today.Rob brings us this debut album for this week's podcast. YouThe second single was inspired by the time that lead singer Kevin Martin gave up drug dependency.  He had seen Midnight Oil in concert and dedicated himself to becoming a rock singer.  The single peaked at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts.  The song in 6/8 time alternates between a heavy rock feel on the chorus and a softer portion in the verses.Don't YouThis song leads off the album, and is a deeper cut that was not released as a single.  It really rocks from the start.  “And I could break your heart down as I tell you that you've burned out.  Don't you?  You want to let it go, yeah - you want to let it go, yeah.”RainAnother deeper cut with a very bluesy feel at the start that continues for several minutes before picking up the pace.  The lyrics are about a woman leaving the singer, and the regret the singer feels at the loss.  About three minutes in, it changes to a more rocking jazz section with a staccato scat meter in the lyrics.Far BehindThe third single would be the big hit from the album.  Their most commercially successful song went to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the Album Rock chart.  It was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, a singer from the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.  The lyrics are written from the perspective of the drug that killed him.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Saturday Night by Ned's Atomic Dustbin (from the motion picture “So I Married an Axe Murderer”)  The Mike Myers dark comedy featured this cover of the Bay City Rollers' song on its soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:Long Day In the Universe by Darling Buds Wayne opens up the staff picks with a deeper cut, and one that also appeared on the soundtrack to “So I Married an Axe Murderer.”  The Darling Buds are from South Wales, forming in 1986 and disbanding in 1993.  Andrew Lewis, the lead singer, tells about a woman that misses her man so much she can't wait for him to come home. Dream All Day by The Posies  Bruce's staff pick is another Seattle band.  This song hit number 4 on the Modern Rocks Chart and number 17 on the Mainstream Rocks chart.  Band members and songwriters Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow wrote this about dreaming of accomplishing things that the singer either can't or won't achieve. Have I Told You Lately by Rod Stewart Rock legend Rod Stewart begins his crooner phase with this cover of the Van Morrison classic from 1989.  Lynch brings this staff pick which hit number 5 on the US and UK charts.  Morrison originally wrote these lyrics inspired by spirituality and religious conviction.   Zooropa by U2Rob reminds us just how big U2 was at the time with his staff pick.   The “Zoo TV Tour” was a huge production, highlighting the commercialism of the time.  “Be a winner, eat to get slimmer.”  This song takes the form of a suite of three movements.  The album of the same name was produced by Brian Eno. COMEDY TRACK:Achy Breaky Song by “Weird” Al Yankovic We close out today's podcast with Weird Al's parody of the Billy Ray Cyrus country hit which was constantly played at the time.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ COLIN HUDD # 089 - PART 2 Ever since dance music first swelled up in the UK, Colin Hudd has been riding the crest of the waves. Beginning his monumental journey, with humble beginnings working as a mobile DJ from 1971 to 1976, This laid the foundations of his DJ career today. Colin began a residency in 1976 at ‘The Monica' on Canvey Island, a year later gaining another residency at ‘Wings', Gravesend End. After passing an audition, Colin moved from ‘Monica' to ‘Goldmine', a residency he kept until 1981. In those days Colin had already established a respected reputation among the soul and funk clubs of the time. He had been a regular at Canvey's legendary ‘Goldmine' and was still on a high from winning the ‘Blues & Soul Club' DJ award. His profile gained momentum enough for him to be noticed and given his now legendary run at ‘Flicks' which ran from 1978 through to 1987. But, from as early as 1986, when the rest of the world was still listening to soul and the new romantics, Colin had already started leaning towards an entirely new genre of dance music. Little did he know that the music he had recognised as something more than a ‘fad' would become the global phenomenon it is still today; House Music. Colin has always been ahead of his time. From when he discovered house music in 1986 when he was advised to leave this new ‘noise' alone and stick to the soul that had worked so well for him, but, going with his instincts; he found himself pioneering a dance revolution. His technical ability and creative foresight enabled him to go on to headline landmark clubs such as Heaven, Legends, Ministry of Sound, World Dance, Pure Sex, and Spectrum/Land of Oz. Even bigger events were round the corner. His residency at Spectrum found him working alongside Paul Oakenfold a man he remains good friends with today. By that time house music had begun to take hold and Colin and Paul found themselves playing to packed dance floors night after night, Leading to Colin and Paul supporting U2 on their Zooropa tour. It was inevitable that Colin would turn to producing his own music. He worked as the Manic MCs and Audio Deluxe, whilst remixing PP Arnold, Billy Idol and a host of other well-respected artists.

Editors note: Either brain fart or early onset dementia, Dave kept calling U2's Zooropa, the incorrect name of Zoo TV. Zoo Tv was the name of the Tour, not the album. Pearl Jam has a rich history of playing shows in Italy. Many of their Italian shows have been among some of their best such as Verona 2006 and the entire Immagine In Cornice run. They've also had some not so memorable moments opening up for U2 on the 1993 Zooropa tour where they were not well received. Out of the 21 shows they've played there, there might not be one that beats the last time they've played there to date at the famous Stadio Olimpico in Rome. In front of 70,000 fans, the band returned to the ancient city for the first time since the 1996 tour. That Rome show is relevant because it was on that tour that Ed wrote the lyrics to what would become Yield song MFC and would play it at his first ever solo show in Rome after the tour ended. Ed tells the story of how MFC was written during this show as the song is clearly an obvious choice to play due to the environment. Speaking of obvious songs, since this is a massive crowd, the band comes out firing with all of their hits. Some of the best moments from this show are the songs that you might be able to hear at any Pearl Jam show, but remember this isn't in front of a mere 15,000 people in a hockey arena. This is in front of one of the largest stadiums in the world. After Ed had to deal with throat issues that postponed a London show a week prior to this night, they bounced back with a 35-song performance and an instant classic. Release, Elderly Woman, Corduroy, Daughter, Black, Rearviewmirror, Alive, and Rockin' In The Free World are all major highlights from this show. March of 1992 was somewhat of a breakthrough for Pearl Jam. After returning from a successful tour overseas featuring memorable shows in Germany and Amsterdam, they found themselves in a major spotlight getting the call to perform on MTV's Unplugged. Although it wouldn't premiere for 2 months, the band's rise was imminent and their popularity in America had grew exponentially from the time they left. This show at The Cabaret Metro in Chicago, as documented in the Let's Play Two documentary, was important for so many reasons. Not only was it a hometown show for both Ed and The Smashing Pumpkins who acted as the opening act, it was a platform where they had to prove that they belonged up on that stage headlining these clubs shows and even bigger shows to come. The guys from U2 were there that night to scout them to be an opening act for what would be the Italian run of the Zooropa tour. Everything seemed to be falling into place at the time. This performance is classic 1992. You have some improvs, including Rockin' In The Free World played on the spot due to a drum issue, great performances of Ten songs and an encore where they shared the stage with the Pumpkins saluting them in their hometown.

The vaccines are being rolled out as we speak, but that doesn't mean COVID-19 is behind us. The pandemic has left tens of millions of people out of work and companies struggling to stay alive. This week, Duntrune LLP's https://www.duntrune.law/matthew-dewar (Matthew Dewar) joins the show to share his expectations for employer/employee relations in 2021. While some long layoffs might be considered termination, seeking a settlement from cash strapped companies could be futile in the midst of a pandemic. He's got some ideas on how employers can manage risk and what laid-off employees should consider, too. Then we look at some positive news from last week: Major League Baseball's decision to include player statistics from the Negro Leagues into the official baseball stat book. The Negro Leagues stopped playing 72 years ago, so it was a long-time coming. While it might appear to be an easy win for MLB, Cam explains why it wasn't quite so simple, and shared his thoughts on what MLB did right as it rolled out the announcement. In Check This Out, we look at the much maligned (but excellent) U2 album Zooropa, which was released 25 years ago. Staying on the music theme, Cam talked about Britney Spears (!?!?), Henry Kissinger, and growing up in Kentucky. You won't want to miss it. This marks the final episode of the PR & Law Podcast in 2020. We managed to complete 37 episodes in 37 consecutive weeks, made simpler by the fact Cam and Ewan have both been locked at home throughout much of the pandemic! He reminisces about living the life of a travelling ‘hippy beach bum” in the 80’s with trips to a Kibbutz in Israel and sleeping out under the stars in the Sinai desert and spending months living on the Greek islands of Naxos and Crete. He considers these times of the happiest travel memories of his life. “I have loved travel for ever and ever. I grew up an emigrant in south London, so I never really belonged. I was told daily I was the Irish boy. We returned to Ireland, but I never really settled as then I was the English boy. So, I have taken to the road since. I became addicted to travel. Since then I have been collecting cultures and learning about new faiths and new countries”. Jerry share great tales of life on the road with his band An Emotional Fish in the 90’s in Europe and American. He fell in love with the Yosemite National Park where the Giant Sequoia trees are over 2000 years old and the majesty of the Grand Canyon in Nevada where the shadows of the sunlight changes the landscape every few minutes. An Emotional fish toured with U2 on their Zooropa tour with Pearl Jam. He share a great story about how Eddie Vedder and himself would try to outdo each on stage each night with outrageous antics which culminated in Jerry stripping naked on stage in Marseilles on his birthday in front of a stadium full of screaming U2 fans. Jerry has missed touring and playing live this year but looking on the bright side he said “I haven’t been to many places this year but if you had been in my mind, you’d see I have been all over the world”. “I think what we have been doing this year is reflecting on past travels and that is another form of travel” This travel Podcast interview series is out every Tuesday and guests talk about travel, sport, culture, people, food, politics, history, the tourism industry and life abroad. From their beginnings in the 1980s U2 have maintained a reputation for their earnest and serious-minded pop rock, often tackling social issues, spiritual mattesr, and their Irish background in their new wave-inflected songs. In the 1990s however, the band experienced a career rebirth in embracing a more ironic and detached image, with a dance-inspired sound to match, achieving major commercial success on the backs of albums like Achtung Baby and Zooropa. For many however, this shift away from their classic sound would reach a tipping point in 1997 with the release of their 9th record, Pop. The album was not a commercial or critical failure initially, but left a lot of fans and reviewers confused and baffled by this latest effort, which many believed couldn't reach a proper balance between rock and electronic. This, coupled with a turbulent production timeline, as well as a tour controversial for its technical failures sullied Pop's reputation, and to this day it's still regarded as one of U2's weakest efforts. On this episode of Jukebox Zeroes we begin the first of a two-part crossover month we're dubbing "Old Men Yell At Lilz Month". Lilz and Patrick are joined by Christopher G. Brown of Nickelbackin' and Old Men Yell At Cloud (of course) to dig into U2's Pop for themselves, and decide whether it should have gotten a fairer shake.Local Music Feature: Left Hand Does - "Rock Walker"#ZeroScience#JukeboxZeroes#MusicPodcast#OddPodSquad#PodernFamily#U2#RockHardBonking

This clip has Bono singing the praises of Johnny Cash, telling the surreal tale of the time Cash was almost killed by an Emu and finally playing for me the staggering brilliant U2/Johnny Cash collaboration The Wanderer - a title I tell him I think the song should be called, and it was. In fact throughout most of high school and college they were MY BAND. I'm not too naive to understand that not everything they produced was pure gold. The 1990s were quite the decade for U2. They reinvented their sound and style with the daring album, Achtung Baby, and then quickly released the equally impressive follow-up album, Zooropa, less than two years later. But 1997s Pop proved to be a commercial and critical disappointment, and left many wondering if Bono and the boys were starting to run out of ideas. And then they made a triumphant return to form in 2000 with All That You Can't Leave Behind, an upbeat and often uplifting album that proved to be the perfect soundtrack to the optimism associated with the dawn of the 21st century. The album would also later provide the songs that would help a bruised and bloodied world begin to heal in the days and weeks immediately following the September 11th attacks. On the twentieth anniversary of it's release, Chris and Jon look back at the milestone album that would mark the beginning of the third chapter in the story of one of rock music's most important and successful groups. The duo also discusses a wide array of topics oddly related to their memories of this album including different types of cheese, a late night drunken pizza bender in Hartford back in June of 2001, and Kaiser Soze.

En cualquier caso, el Hombre de Negro casi nunca defrauda y al margen de volver a grabar “Hey Porter” y “Wanted Man” de sus años en Sun y Columbia, nos dejó “I’ll Go Somewhere and Sing My Songs Again” con Tom T. This Podcast is a 45-minute edit of the two-and-a-half hours we put on tape. The full tapes are available at joejacksoninterviewer.com

For A Moment There, U2 Could Have Been My Favourite Band

U2 are a very serious band, with very serious songs, and they were inescapable in Ireland in the 1980's, when I was a child. While those uplifting, energised stadium rock tunes took over the world, they didn't catch on with 5 year old me. But In the 1990's as the focus of the world shifted decisively to Europe, so did U2's attention, and the change yielded something that really resonated with 10 year old me. It was a 1993 album called Zooropa, dashed off quickly, and mostly forgotten by all but serious U2 fans. U2, though, had done something that for them was very different. They'd forseen the future. And it had loops and synthesisers and effects, and it was good.

Episode 237: The Record Company Gonna Give Me Lots of Money This week Host Dave Bledsoe is not ALL jealous of others good fortune and in fact wishes them all the success in the world, and these tears you see are tears of joy. (The only other time we've seen him cry like this was at Last Call) On the show this week we talk about selling out and angry fans. (Not ours, we don't have any fans, even angry ones) Along the way we discuss the good fortune of our friends over the Last Podcast Network who just signed an exclusive deal with Spotify. (By friends we mean friends of friends of friends, and in New York City, that counts!) Then we dive deep into the sausage making of creating a financially successful podcast only to discover whatever meat we are putting into the sausage gives people food poisoning. (But you should totally donate to our Patreon!) Then we take a turn through why the Fans thinks they are more important than the people who create the art. (Which you totally are, please donate to our Patreon!) Finally, we explain why U2's Zooropa was a bad album and that is totally OK! (We would still like a refund from our purchase in 1993, however.) Our Sponsor this week is Eddify, a new streaming service with exclusive content no one has heard before because it is unlistenable. We open the show with The Beast, Which Will Never Sell Out and close with some Reel Big Fish. U2's finest hour wasn't lifting us up singing about MLK, a spiritual celebration of the history of American music, or even future pop from the edges of our imagination: It was an insistent, eccentric, and infinitely prescient project that almost wasn't, named Zooropa. This week, we're revisiting the "biggest band in the world's" most powerful statement about us all, twenty-five years after it's prophetic vibrations confounded and delighted music fans of all walks, and making that Zooropa isn't just the best U2 album...it's the only one that really matters.Show NotesIncidental music courtesy of Aquatic Gardener. In Episode 033, we deep-dive into the history of one of our favorite bands, U2. To do so, we brought on one of our close friends, and U2-expert, Ryan Nichols (@ryannichols7) to help us out. Approaching the band's history chronologically, we explore how U2 grew into the biggest band in the world, shifted in one of the most extreme manners for a mainstream Rock band, and has spent much of the last 20 years trying to figure out what's next. We also consider possible ways for U2 to reclaim the status of "The World's Most Important Band."Songs featured in this episode are: "The Electric Co" - Boy (1980), "I Fall Down" - October (1980), "Drowning Man," - War (1983), "Indian Summer Sky," - The Unforgettable Fire (1984), "Red Hill Mining Town" - The Joshua Tree (1987), "Hawkmoon 269" - Rattle & Hum (1988), "Zoo Station" - Achtung Baby (1991), "Dirty Day" - Zooropa (1993).Check us out on Spotify: Beyond The Pond Podcast SongsYou can find us on Twitter: @_beyondthepondMedium: https://medium.com/beyond-the-pondPlease check out the Osiris Podcast Network at: OsirisPod.com // Go to Relix.com to learn more about Osiris, our sister podcasts, & upcoming events! Please leave us a review on iTunes! Matkin and Ax continue their recap of the Innocence + Experience tour by looking at how U2 paid tribute to BB King and Dennis Sheehan, who both passed away while they were on the road. After this farewell they move on to talk of those pesky snippets, why the website lists Zooropa as a full song, and historical judgement calls. Could some tweaks to the database in the future solve the problem? Also why does U2Gigs list Shine Like Stars but not Do You Hear Us Coming? The episode ends off with a look at what happened to U2's idea of rotating setlists.
