With Donald Trump being brought back into the White House, we might only be seeing the beginning of another decade of QAnon. How did we get here? Our story today starts in 2016, when Wikileaks released tens of thousands of private emails from John Podesta. By the 2020 election, thanks to “Q” and the QAnon movement, conspiracy theories were front and center. While many originated from right-leaning people and platforms, by the 2024 election both sides now have their own conspiracies to make themselves feel better, or demonize the other team—and there's so many they've become ambient noise. Travis View joins us to talk about the proliferation of conspiracy theories and how they've impacted the way we think and approach politics. Our guest Travis View is the host of QAA (QAnon Anonymous). Despite Travis' best efforts, it's still possible to occasionally read posts on the internet that are not perfectly accurate. In fact, Travis' failure to turn networking technology into primarily a means of rationally exchanging ideas and substantive policy issues has forced media outlets all over the globe to employ so-called “fact checkers.” To get a better handle on this phenomenon (for which, to reiterate, podcast host Travis View bears most of the blame) we spoke to the hardest working man in online fact checking: BBC Verify Senior Journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh. For years, he has tracked and reported on viral falsehoods, both silly and deadly, in many countries. We discuss how Shayan got into this unique discipline of journalism, his response to the criticism that “fact checking” primarily serves the reinforcement of establishment narratives, research which suggests fact checkers are less trusted than other kinds of reporters, the rise of deep fakes, atrocity denial, and how to maintain trust as a fact checker. An Irish boyband called Boyzone sees their bad boy accuse other musicians of doing satanic rituals on stage. In Utah, a bill is advanced to criminalize “ritual abuse of a child” that speaks of animal sacrifice, cannibalism, bestiality, corpse mutilation, bondage, coffins and open graves. Meanwhile, Tim Ballard, the heroic subject of a recent blockbuster biopic is fighting back against accusations that he coerced multiple women into sex in the course of his “missions” to save children in foreign countries. In 2017, 4chan user "Q" started LARPing as a Deep State insider with predictions about Hillary Clinton and the pedophile cabal. 10 months later, the online antifascist world assembled its emergency podcast response team: three dubiously-credentialed shitposters( two using pseudonyms themselves) dedicated to covering “the best conspiracy theories of the post-truth era. Exploring online fever swamps and tripping over deranged historical facts that make conspiracy theories sound sane.” The digital soldiers of QAnonAnonymous Podcast subjected themselves to the most cursed content the internet has to offer. But the real world they traveled through was just as smelly. They went to live QAnon protests, parades, and conferences. They conducted the first interviews with the QAnon Shaman. They attended ball-slapping workshops to raise their testosterone for the Great Awakening. They caught COVID many, many times, all for the cause. And now, as their reward, they get to see their favorite redpilled celebrity, and Mel Gibson's favorite Jesus, Jim Caviezel, star in the fake-u-mentary, "Sound of Freedom." It's been a long road to Hollywood for our guests Travis View and Jake Rockatansky, but this is their red-carpet moment where we get to ask them: How did they like working on this show? People are getting upset on planes. We're documenting it. Here to help us is Travis View of the Q Anon Anonymous podcast. We cover the conspiracy theory gripping the nation: a woman aboard an aircraft accused her seat neighbor of being not real Why did this vague proclamation strike such a chord with right-wing conspiracists, and what does it say about the movement at large? Following in the same vein, we look at another new conspiracy theory: the WEF is planning on banning fashion. You will dress blandly, and you will like it. In the third volume of the infamous “Jake's Takes” series, Jake and Liv kidnap podcast dad Travis View and force him to surrender his takes unto them. Whether they're discussing discontinued snack items, or the TV adaptation they're MOST disappointed by, Jake never fails to unlock some bizarre memory from his childhood and tell it to you for probably the fourth or fifth time. This episode also introduces two highly requested segments: Liv's Gives and Travis' Savages. The former see's Liv's interest piqued by a new, somewhat shady, streaming platform, and the latter finds Travis musing over the early writings of PT Barnum. It's official, summer has begun. Naturally, things are beginning to melt at a rapid rate, including the news that is fed to us via our precious black mirrors. In an effort to help the QAA Snowman keep his eyes from falling out of his head, we've unleashed our most trusted aggregator Travis View to track conspiracy theories spawning out of Trump's indictment as well as the emergence of a powerful Kennedy offspring. Meanwhile, Jake unpacks online conspiracy theories related to the missing Ocean Gate submarine, and the reddit communities who are sick and tired of hearing about them. Joining us is resident QAA legal analyst Allie Mezei, to help the guys figure out just how many Pinocchios Donald Trump will be spending in jail. Producer's note: This episode was recorded before the breaking news about the fate of the submarine and its passengers. If you have managed to avoid the phenomenon of QAnon up until now, then congratulations! Your life is likely better for not knowing. Sadly many of us have been forced not only to learn about the 'enigmatic'(/idiotic) Q and his merry band of followers but also to witness the consequences of the movement during events like January 6th.Travis View (the pen name of Logan Strain) is part of the motley crew of the hugely popular QAnon Anonymous podcast that attempts to document the phenomenon of QAnon. From undercover investigations to creative writing, the QAnon Anonymous team (including previous guest Annie Kelly) have approached the topic with a creative and anthropological approach. We sit down with Travis and ask him to provide us with the 101 on QAnon before we delve into some of the more arcane topics, including cultish splinter groups, the psychology of QAnon adherents, just how much of a threat he thinks the movement poses, and how does he stay sane while looking at depressing craziness week in and week out.Travis is a wealth of information and a groovy guy to boot. In the 1970s a new method of helping the poorest people in the world emerged: microlending. The idea is to give the very poorest people, those who live on less than two dollars per day, very small loans they can use to start businesses and serve their community. Thanks to the power of success stories and anecdotes of those helped by microlending, the idea caught on with philanthropists and governments in the west. The concept enjoyed the full throated endorsement of the Clintons, The Nobel Committee, the United Nations, and experts working in global development. But a dark side of microlending quickly emerged. Some loans came with unreasonably high interest rates. Certain microlending institutions harassed and threatened those who couldn't pay. Some of those who received small loans found themselves trapped in a debt spiral. The indebted even committed suicide to escape the loan. While this was going on, some owners of microfinance ventures profited to the tune of millions of dollars. In the 2010s, multiple studies began to discover that the benefits of microlending as a poverty cure were vastly oversold. Microloans could in fact improve a community's economic base in certain situations. But they cannot and will not end poverty entirely, as its advocates claimed decades earlier. How did the most powerful, wealthy, and influential people in the world buy into the exaggerated promises of microlending? This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. The mysterious monument known as the Georgia Guidestones — "America's Stonehenge" — was recently destroyed. We cover how it was built in 1980 on a grazing pasture, why it created controversy, and its eventual bombing. For most of the 20th century, the causes of peptic ulcers were a mystery to scientists and doctors. The most popular theory was that it was a disease caused by stress. The mystery was finally unraveled in the 1980s when Australian physician Barry Marshall deliberately infected himself with the H. Pylori bacteria, got sick, and cured himself with an antibiotic treatment. The discovery that bacteria caused ulcers earned Marshall and his research partner a Nobel Prize in 2005. But why did it take so long to discover the true cause and treatment of ulcers? The answer lies in bad evidence collection methods, medical dogma that caused scientists to fully understand the evidence, and pharmaceutical companies that didn't stand to profit from an antibiotic cure of ulcers. In the early fifties, the United government had to reckon with the escalating nuclear arms race. The cold war meant that ascendant rival superpowers were amassing the tools of apocalypse. Internal committees and think tanks decided that they had to avoid the American people becoming terrified, paralyzed, and panicked about the bomb. The solution? Make people afraid. Citizens should fear the bomb. But they shouldn't lose their heads. Fear is manageable. Panic is not. The Federal Civil Defense Administration organized messaging and educational campaigns to show how people could defeat potential nuclear destruction with can do American spirit. Officials hoped to fine tune nuclear anxiety, so it never lapsed into apathy or terror. This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. The 1918 Pandemic was a deadly outbreak of influenza that killed tens of millions globally. It was also forgotten by historians for a generation. Medical officers in charge of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I were confident that they could stop all infectious diseases in their tracks. The previous advances in medical science showed them that wartime epidemics could be stopped through sanitary measures. But when the flu pandemic ripped through their ranks, they didn't know what to do. And the government was too focused on winning the war to offer much help to the civilian population. After the war, authorities were unable to deal with the horrors of the disease in an honest way. They preferred to forget. And so for decades afterwards, the horrors of the 1918 pandemic were erased from the cultural consciousness. This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. After the White Slave Traffic Act passed in 1910, the federal government was ready to start enforcing it with help from the young Bureau of Investigation. The problem is that the gangs of white slavers who snatched innocent girls off the street proved to be more difficult to find than they thought. Instead, the law was used to enforce a moral crusade, punishing citizens who engaged in sexual activity that prosecutors deemed immoral. It was also used by J. Edgar Hoover to target Charlie Chaplin at the beginning of the second red scare. This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. Americans added their own twist to white slavery narratives around the turn of the century. They placed a greater emphasis on the threat of immigration. The new flow of immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe made middle class Americans anxious about the changing ethnic character of the country. This growing fear was seized upon by President Teddy Roosevelt's Immigration Bureau inspector: Marcus Braun. Braun, himself an immigrant from Hungary, traveled the country investigating white slavery. His shocking report was echoed by a congressional investigation. This provided all the pretext necessary for the creation White Slave Traffic Act in 1910. “White slavery” became much more than a narrative. It was law with which the federal government could enforce its version of sexual morality. This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. In the early 20th Century narratives about “white slavery” led to creation of the White-Slave Traffic Act of 1910, which was wielded by the U.S. federal government to police sexuality. These narratives also helped fuel the growth of the FBI in its early days. But before these narratives arrived in the United States, they first grew in Victorian England. To help expose the horrible truth of the underground sex trade, Evangelical feminist activists fighting for better treatment of prostitutes and the protection of children found common cause with an unscrupulous London journalist named William Stead. But Stead was more interested in selling newspapers than the truth. The result was a horrifying scandal that involved Stead kidnapping a 13 year girl and a deformed narrative about sex trafficking that rippled through history long after his death. Henry Herbert Goddard's work studying the supposedly degenerate “Kallikak” family made him world famous. In the words of a teacher at the Vineland Training Center, it also made Emma Wolverton, aka Deborah Kallikak, the “World's Best Known Moron.” But the acclaim Goddard achieved for his work faded as psychologists discovered fatal flaws with his research. However, before Goddard's work was dismissed as worthless by the scientific community is was cited as justification for eugenic programs both at home and in Nazi Germany. Q-Pilled Iowan Doug Jensen speaks to the FBI. He is a January 6th capitol rioter who was seen in a viral video wearing a QAnon t-shirt and chasing a capitol police officer up several flights of stairs. He has since experienced a roller coaster of legal developments due to his inability to stay away from the internet. But thanks to recently released court documents, we now have a more full picture of Jensen's motivations and activities that day. They included a lengthy interview he conducted with the FBI just two days after the riot, on January 8th. It's an astonishing look at how QAnon seemingly spurred Doug Jensen into action. In the early 20th century a psychologist named Henry Herbert Goddard aimed to prove that “feeblemindedness” was a hereditary trait. His work, fueled by the frenzy of eugenics research at the time, focused on the family line of an institutionalized girl named Emma Wolverton, but which he named “Deborah Kallikak” in his publications. Goddard's 1912 study on the supposedly degenerate Kallikak family won him fame and acclaim. It was printed in textbooks and cited in a Supreme Court case that permitted the involuntary sterilization of people in institutions. But decades later the truth was eventually acknowledged by every honest academic: Goddard's research, which was validated by heights of authority and power, was completely worthless from top to bottom. We are revisiting our Qanon episode, in which we explored the murky world of QAnon, the far-right conspiracy theory that falsely claims President Donald Trump is fighting a shadowy cabal of Satanist pedophiles. To find out how child pedophilia rings, Pizzagate, and the existence of a deep state made their way into the mainstream consciousness, and also to learn about the conspiracy theory's links to the military and veteran community, we talk with QAnon Anonymous podcast co-host and Washington Post contributor Travis View, as well as with journalist and former Green Beret Jack Murphy. Does QAnon have the potential for stoking extremist violence? Why do it and other extremist organizations work to recruit service members and veterans?
Part 3 of an exhaustive multi-episode deep dive into the mega conspiracy movement, QAnon. In October of 2017, a mysterious poster known only as Q began posting cryptic messages on the image board 4Chan. Set aside a supplemental dose of insulin to prepare yourself for the irresistible sweetness that is Our Pal: Jake Rockatansky. Not merely one of the three primary hosts of the immensely popular, listener-supported QAnon critical podcast, but further and perhaps most importantly, a man who will be forever immortalized by the gentle and alluring display of bare feet in Cullen Hoback's Q: Into the Storm documentary, currently airing on HBO. Jake also wrote and self-produced a five song music EP dedicated — mostly — to his adorable papilion Teddy.Jake assented to talking with me for reasons I am yet to fully comprehend, and was characteristically generous with his time and attention. The result is more than two hours of deeply engaging conversation; we talk about the inspiration and production of the Teddy EP, get a bit under the hood with the QAA podcast and marvel over its incredible, vibrant fan community. Jake is forthcoming about the difficulty in covering conspiracist movements and communities, the challenges and rewards of creative work and most especially the dissociative nature of watching one's fringe area of interest suddenly and terribly manifest into worldwide iconography.Jake on Twitter: @realrockatanskyThe Teddy EPApple Music | Spotify | BandcampTwitter handles for the hosts: Travis View, Annie Kelley, Liv Agar, and Julian Feeld. The podcast also has a website, with links to merchandise, their Pateron page and very active Discord community. Welcome JAKE ROCKATANSKY, co-founder/co-host of Q*non Anonymous podcast to Episode 045. For 3 years, Jake & his cohorts at QAA have been investigating and unraveling the Q phenomenon, and all the various conspiracy threads that fit under the big Q tent. We'd never be able to button up the whole Q conspiracy kit n' caboodle in merely one pod ep! Instead, we take a lengthy, illuminating trek into the world of @RealRockatansky, rewind Jake's path to the podcast, explore the annals of Q-research and the QAA origin story, with our main man J-Rock at the helm. We talmbout Q?/ Introducing JAKE ROCKATANSKY @5:00 INTERVIEW w/Jake Rockatansky @15:30 Along with erstwhile collaborators Julien Field and Travis View, in QAA Jake is part of an incredible organic podcast success story. Since 2018, the trio has established their program as the preeminent place to go for a skeptical, empathetic take on this madness, and a humane look into this worldwide conspiracy scourge. These guys are globally respected, often times a reporter's first call when trying to nail down a Q or Q-adjacent story. Nobody has been as unwaveringly focused on the Q beat quite like the QAA dudes & their intrepid correspondents Annie & Liv. They're still truckin' along well into 2021, to the tune of 2 podcasts and 2 Twitch broadcasts every week, with a sizable, dedicated Patreon community that's steadily growing. In this interview, Jake takes us thru his experiences combating Q, facing down horrific anti-Semitism, satanic panic, going under cover at Q events, interacting with Anons & influencers, and graciously gives us the QAA origin story. J-Rock reveals a beautifully human vulnerability that we've come to know thru his contributions to the pod. He unveils his process, fears, hope, and huge, swollen heart. We get a bit about his childhood in the Chicago burbs, his decamping to SoCal at 18, longtime musical faves like Weezer or Dipset, and latest raves like Beach Bunny and Denzel Curry. In between the beats and the laughs, we get pretty serious too, with regard to Q's human toll, and how we can best stay connected with those we care for that may have lost the plot or themselves amid the Qrazy. So grateful for how generous Jake was, with his time and energy, and that he showed up in this convo in all the ways that have endeared him to thousands of listeners around the world.
