The statement, which since has been deleted, ended with, “May every Palestinian live long and free, from the river to the sea,” according to The Daily Iowan. The phrase “from the river to the sea” refers to the land between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea. Palestinians have used the phrase for decades to call for the restoration of the land where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians once lived before being forced to leave with the establishment in Israel in 1948, Jessica Winegar, a sociocultural anthropologist at Northwestern University who studies political protest and the Middle East, recently told the Chicago Sun-Times.Late Wednesday, shortly after the University Democrats at Iowa statement was posted, Iowa Democratic Party state Chair Rita Hart issued a statement condemning the college group's statement and calling for the resignation of any member who signed it.None of the student leaders for the group responded to questions from The Gazette on Thursday. The group also hasn't posted on any of its social media channels since pulling down the controversial statement Wednesday.A Tama woman was sentenced Thursday to more than two years in federal prison for draining nearly all her nephew's trust fund — more than $380,000 of his Meskwaki per capita funds and Social Security benefits — which was mostly spent on diamond jewelry for herself.Nancy Lee Johnson, 69, previously pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one of the seven counts of wire fraud after she was indicted in 2022.U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Johnson to 33 months in federal prison and ordered her to pay $387,213 in restitution.According to plea agreement, Johnson's nephew, a member of the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Tama, couldn't manage his finances due to “mental disabilities.” Johnson was appointed as his guardian in 2011.In 2017, she filed a petition in Meskwaki Tribal Court to become her nephew's permanent guardian and conservator, the plea stated. In the petition, she said her nephew couldn't care for himself and make important decisions concerning his finances.According to the plea, she used her position as guardian and conservator to transfer money from her nephew's trust fund into an account she opened in her name for the unauthorized purchases. Johnson was able to conceal her scheme based on her guardianship and claimed that she was acting on the nephew's behalf.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for the weekend of June 4 and June 5. After a few days of sunny weather it looks like rain will return this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, showers will be likely in the Cedar Rapids area before 11 a.m. and also Saturday night. In the gap between rain during the day it should still be mostly cloudy, with a high near 74 degrees. Sunday should follow a similar pattern with a chance for rain throughout the day. However, the sun may peak its way through the clouds at some point Sunday and the high temperature is predicted to be 79 degrees. A man who https://apnews.com/article/des-moines-iowa-ames-shootings-religion-953db59ed6487d27f361338274073fac (fatally shot two women before killing himself) in the parking lot of an Iowa church had been romantically involved with one of the women and faced a court hearing next week on a charge of harassing her, investigators said Friday. Authorities said 33-year-old Johnathan Lee Whitlatch, of Boone, pulled up in a pickup truck outside Cornerstone Church on the outskirts of Ames just before 7 p.m. Thursday and began shooting at three women with a 9 mm handgun. Eden Montang, 22, and Vivian Flores, 21, were killed in the attack, and Whitlatch then shot himself, Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald said. The two women were friends and students at Iowa State University and were walking together to the church for a weekly service that is popular with university and high school students. The sheriff said Whitlatch and Montang had recently broken up, and investigators believe Whitlatch's intent was to kill her. Iowa Democrats are proposing sweeping changes to their caucuses, essentially turning the complicated system into a simple straw poll, in an attempt to preserve their status as one of the first states to express their choice for the next U.S. president. The Iowa Democratic Party on Thursday afternoon formally submitted to the national party an application to be one of the early-voting states to the national party's rules and bylaws committee. The national party's rules and bylaws committee is expected to meet later this month to review states' applications. The Iowa caucuses — both Democrat and Republican — have kicked off the country's presidential nominating process every four years for the past four decades. But in recent years, national Democrats have expressed concern with the caucus system, which requires in-person attendance, and with a lack of diversity in the state, which makes it, in critics' eyes, unfit to serve as the influential first state in the process of picking a president. The heat on Iowa Democrats intensified after the 2020 caucuses, when a computer program designed to tabulate caucus results failed on caucus night. As a result, official results weren't reported for several weeks. In contrast, the first in the nation status appears to be safe for Iowa Republicans, who already have a simplified voting system in place. It also helps that Republicans have had a lot of success in recent elections in Iowa, and the congressional delegation holds some sway with national Republicans.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, April 9, and Sunday, April 10. We'll get a break from the rain this weekend before it looks to be returning for much of next week. According to the National Weather Service on Saturday there will be a high near 52 degrees with sunny skies in the Cedar Rapids area. On Saturday night the low will be around 32, with a mild wind. On Sunday it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 64 degrees. It will be breezy, with a wind of 10 to 15 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. The wind gusts could get as high as 35 mph. On Sunday night it will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 44 degrees. President Joe Biden appears to be headed back to Iowa for the first time since his election in November 2020. While the White House as of Friday afternoon would not confirm the trip, the Iowa Democratic Party issued a statement trumpeting Biden's “upcoming” visit to Iowa. The White House declined to confirm a report from the Des Moines Register that Biden plans to visit Des Moines on Tuesday. Without confirmation from the White House, no details about Biden's visit were immediately available on Friday. Things Biden could talk about on his visit to Iowa could include the roughly https://www.thegazette.com/transportation/infrastructure-bill-will-bring-nearly-5-billion-to-iowa/ ($5 billion over five years in new federal funding) the state will receive under the bipartisan infrastructure bill. Also possible would be a waiver that would allow E15 ethanol blend to be sold year round as a way of lowering gas prices nationally. Iowans bet big on the NCAA men's basketball tournament, casting more than $233.5 million in sports wagers in March, according to https://irgc.iowa.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2022/02/January2022_0.pdf (state gaming numbers posted Friday). That figure was an 8 percent increase over the previous month, and a 45 percent increase over the same month in 2021. But it fell short of the record numbers posted during football season, including a high of $303.3 million in January. Sports betting numbers typically decrease over the summer months. The convicted killer of Chris Bagley wants to represent himself in his upcoming drug trial, and a judge granted it Thursday. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-grants-chris-bagley-killer-name-change/ (Drew Alan Blahnik, 34, of Marion,) who changed his name to Johnny Blahnik Church after being sentenced to 57 years in prison for fatally stabbing Bagley Dec. 14, 2018, will act as his own lawyer for his April 19 trial. He is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance — marijuana — and drug tax stamp violation. Blahnik is accused of possessing 100 “heavy-hitters” or marijuana cartridges individually wrapped that were intended for delivery, according to a criminal complaint. Police found the cartridges underneath his bed while serving a search warrant Feb. 25, 2019 — before he was charged in Bagley's murder — at his residence in Marion. According to trial testimony, Blahnik “hunted down” Bagley on behalf of local drug dealer https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/manager-of-large-drug-trafficking-ring-related-to-chris-bagleys-death-sentenced-to-nearly-8-years/ (Andrew Shaw,) after Bagley had robbed drugs and money from Shaw. Shaw is currently serving time in federal prison on drug charges. Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, March 12and Sunday, March 13. First of all, I should note that this weekend is daylight savings time week, meaning we will Spring forward an hour on Sunday. Just a reminder to set your clocks ahead, presuming you have any that don't update themselves. As for the weather, there will be one last cold day on Saturday before a warm week begins on Sunday. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 25 degrees on Saturday in the Cedar Rapids area. The wind will not be overly strong until Saturday night, but it will have a wind chill of -10 degrees before it warms up Saturday night. On Sunday it should be sunny with a high near 55 degrees and a mild wind. It may get quite warm and sunny this coming week, with a potential for near 70 degrees on Wednesday. So if you want to spend your weekend looking for your Spring clothes I think it might finally be safe to do so. According to reporting from the Washington Post, Democratic leaders took another step Friday toward ending Iowa's status as the first state in the party's presidential nominating process. A party rules committee meeting showed clear support for a new path that would prioritize more diverse and competitive states. The meeting of the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee came to no final decisions, but once again a majority of speakers made clear they are open to shaking up the presidential primary calendar to better reflect what speakers described as the party's values. Despite Iowa's lack of demographic diversity, the national party has also criticized the Iowa Caucus for what is viewed as an archaic caucus system. It did not help that the most recent caucus was botched so heavily that results were delayed for a week, leading to the resignation of the head of the Iowa Democratic Party. On the Republican side, there is no indication that Iowa will lose its first in the nation status. Besides already being a primary, Iowa Republicans enjoy the benefit of having more sway in the national party. Two years after a pandemic-plagued University of Iowa announced plans to https://www.thegazette.com/education/sweeping-ui-budget-cuts-affect-hancher-thousands-of-employees-and-harrelds-pay/ (wean its acclaimed Hancher Auditorium) off university general fund support by 2024, UI officials Friday committed to continue providing $750,000 “annually” for the venue's facilities and maintenance costs. The UI did not respond to questions about how long that annual contribution will last, and it comes to half the $1.5 million annual support the UI has typically made to Hancher in years' past. The news came as part of a larger announcement about the creation of a new UI Office of Performing Arts and Engagement that will house a re-branded “Hancher Presents,” which is intended to expand its reach to “potential venues across the university and Iowa City area to further enable arts engagement.” Iowa City City Manager Geoff Fruin has named Scott Lyon as the city's next fire chief. Lyon, now the assistant fire chief in Urbandale, is to start April 4, pending approval by the city's Civil Service Commission and City Council. He will succeed John Grier, the city's fire chief from 2013 until February 2022, https://www.thegazette.com/news/iowa-city-fire-chief-retiring-after-nearly-30-years-with-department/ (who retired after nearly 30 years with the department). Deputy Chief Eric Nurnberg has served as interim chief. Fruin said in a memo that Lyon “clearly articulated his strong belief that the fire department is an extension of the community.” Fruin said he expects Lyon will create new partnerships between the department and the community, other city departments and regional public safety organizations. The Iowa Democratic Party delayed releasing results from Monday's caucuses after uncovering inconsistencies in the reporting of data. Caucuses were held in 1,600 precincts across the state on Monday, but many precincts had trouble reporting the delegate totals to the state Democratic Party. Part of the blame was placed on a new smartphone app designed to help precinct chairs tabulate and report the vote. Early Tuesday morning, Bernie Sanders's campaign released internal caucus numbers from 40% of the precincts in Iowa showing the Vermont senator was in first place with nearly 30% of the final count vote. According to the data released by the Sanders campaign, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg placed second with about 24.5% of the vote, followed by Senator Elizabeth Warren with 21%. Former Vice President Joe Biden placed a distant fourth with 12%, just beating Senator Amy Klobuchar. For more on the chaos in Iowa, we speak with John Nichols, national affairs correspondent for The Nation and host of the podcast “Next Left.” He's been reporting on the ground in Iowa and just wrote the piece “How to Figure Out Who ‘Won' the Iowa Caucuses.” The post Chaos in Iowa: Caucus Results Delayed, But Bernie Sanders' Internal Data Shows He May Have Won appeared first on KPFA.
