Everything seemed to go well during the 2020 Iowa Democratic caucuses… until it came time to record the results. There was no momentum for any candidates on caucus night because of a faulty smartphone app. President Joe Biden had a poor showing and signaled the DNC to move Iowa back in the calendar ending the state's coveted long held first-in-the-nation position.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Thursday, June 29.According to the National Weather Service it will be a partly sunny day in the Cedar Rapids area on Thursday, with a high near 92 degrees. There will be widespread haze again, mostly before noon. There will be chances for showers and thunderstorms both in the morning and in the evening hours heading into Friday.The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued an update late Wednesday extending the haze air quality advisory. The advisory stated that fine particulate levels near or above EPA health standards are expected to remain elevated Thursday and persist in Eastern Iowa through Friday.Iowa state officials have reversed course and will apply for federal assistance to provide food for Iowa school children from low-income families during summer break, following weeks of lobbying by anti-hunger advocates.Alex Carfrae, a spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, told The Gazette late Tuesday the state will participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's summer program this year. The deadline for states to apply is July 14.Earlier this month, a department official told a member of the Iowa Hunger Coalition that Iowa was not going to participate in the summer Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer — or P-EBT — program this year, according to an email obtained by The Gazette.That would have meant forgoing a potential $28.2 million, or $120 per eligible child, in federal food aid for an estimated 235,000 children who would have received free or reduced-price school meals this past school year.Tuesday's announcement comes after Iowa Democratic lawmakers last week implored Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds to apply for the federal assistance, and after weeks of lobbying by members of the Iowa Hunger Coalition.A North Liberty man, who was convicted of sexually abusing a boy over a year or so when the boy was 5 or 6 years old, was sentenced to 80 years in prison this week.Sixth Judicial District Judge Andrew Chappell, during Monday's hearing, ran four of the sentences for 38-year-old Thomas Dean Jesse, consecutively, and the others were run concurrently for a total of 80 years. Jesse was convicted of one count of lascivious acts with a child and 40 counts of second-degree sexual abuse.Chappell said Jesse must serve 70 percent of three of the sentences before being eligible for parole.Jesse was charged in January 2022 after a relative saw his laptop with videos that depicted dozens of acts of Jesse sexually abusing a 5- or 6-year-old boyIowa will receive $35 million in federal infrastructure money for bridge and road improvements across the state, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.The funding will be split among three projects:•$24.8 million to replace nine bridges across the state•$10 million to rebuild Main Street in Cedar Falls between University Avenue and Sixth Street• And $300,000 to evaluate approaches to improving infrastructure connecting downtown Clear Lake to Interstate 35.

Dave Loebsack joined Iowa Democratic candidates running for state and federal office gathered at Sutliff Farm & Cider House in Lisbon on Saturday for a campaign rally to help elect Liz Mathis and Christina Bohannan. About 350 people attended, according to Mathis' campaign. Mathis, a Democratic state senator from Hiawatha, is running to unseat Iowa Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson of Marion in Iowa's newly reconfigured 2nd Congressional District. Bohannan, a University of Iowa law professor and Democratic state representative from Iowa City, is running against Iowa Republican U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Ottumwa in Iowa's new 1st Congressional District. Mathis and Bohannan criticized Hinson and Miller-Meeks for voting against the federal infrastructure bill signed into law while praising projects supported by their funding. –

McAuliffe campaign scrambled to 'kill' Fox News story, emails revealTeam McAuliffe emails reveal an effort to 'kill this' Fox News storyVirginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe's campaign raised eyebrows by spending nearly $60,000 to hire a high-profile attorney known for masterminding election-related legal challenges. When Fox News sent the campaign a request for comment, the McAuliffe campaign scrambled to "kill" the story, according to emails mistakenly sent to Fox News.Less than a month before Election Day, McAuliffe's campaign spent $53,680 on the services of the Elias Law Group, a firm that Marc Elias started earlier this year, Fox News previously reported. VideoElias had formerly worked as a partner at the law firm Perkins Coie, which the Hillary Clinton campaign hired in 2016 in order to conduct opposition research on Donald Trump – research that included the infamous Christopher Steele dossier. And our all-time favorite conspiracy theory (5.) involves the Illuminati and how they were controlling the outcome.  With all this swirling around, Kurt and Tim discuss why it’s humans to engage in conspiracy theories and some of their psychological underpinnings, the personality types that are most prone to believing a conspiracy theory, and what we can do to inoculate ourselves from this sort of thinking. We are reason-seeking machines and are more likely to ask “why” before we fully understand “what” happened. US President Donald Trump was acquitted on both charges by the Republican-led Senate on Wednesday afternoon. "The final vote was 52-48 on abuse of power and 53-47 on obstruction of Congress," the Learfield Wire Service reported. "Trump was impeached by the Democratic-controlled House for abuse of power and obstructing Congress in the investigation of the Ukraine scandal. Republicans rejected Democratic demands for witness testimony and documents that have been blocked by the White House. The House accused Trump of illegally withholding vital US military aid to Ukraine while pressuring Ukraine to investigate Democrats. Republicans called impeachment a partisan charade and argued that Trump's conduct was not impeachable." Politically, Tuesday was one raucous day. In his State of the Union address, "President Trump framed his third year in office as an unmistakable success and his fourth as more of the same," The New York Times reported Wednesday. Due to a coding glitch, we still don't know who won the Iowa Democratic presidential caucuses. What are we to make of all of this?"The US trade deficit fell for the first time in six years in 2019 as the White House's trade war with China curbed the import bill, keeping the economy on a moderate growth path despite a slowdown in consumer spending and weak business investment," Reuters reported Wednesday. "The report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday also showed the Trump administration's 'America First' agenda decreased the flow of goods last year, with exports posting their first decline since 2016. President Donald Trump, who has dubbed himself 'the tariff man,' has pledged to shrink the deficit by shutting out more unfairly traded imports and renegotiating free trade agreements. Trump has argued that substantially cutting the trade deficit would boost annual economic growth to 3% on a sustainable basis. After all the drama in 2016, the Democratic National Committee has reformed the nomination process. Today on Politics with Amy Walter from The Takeaway, a look at the new rules and what impact they could have both intended and unintended. Tom Perez was elected as chairman of the DNC in 2017. Perez's mission is to insure that 2020 isn’t a repeat of 2016. That doesn’t just mean winning, it means re-instilling faith in the system for Democrats. And the DNC has done a lot of work on this front. Amy Walter talks with chairman Perez about the reforms the DNC has undertaken. For example, Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008 realized early on that the delegate rules meant that caucuses were going to win him a lot of delegates - even if they didn’t garner as much media attention as big primary states like Pennsylvania or Texas. This year, Democrats have lots of new written and unwritten rules to figure out. How to raise lots of money without looking beholden to corportists and one percenters. How to get on the debate stage - and make the most of that opportunity. And, how to convince primary voters that they won the process fair and square. As we saw in 2016, winning the primary is only one part of the challenge for the nominee. He or she has to keep the party unified and inspired all through the general election too. Bernie Sanders: We need a political revolution During the Iowa Democratic town hall, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders talks about why his campaign has become so popular. Bernie Sanders confronts the 'electability' question Bernie Sanders unapologetically warned on Monday that taxes would rise if he is elected President, an admission that could please his liberal base but trigger criticism from Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Speaking at an intimate Democratic town hall in Des Moines broadcast by CNN, Sanders was asked how he would pay for his single-payer, Medicare-for-all proposal. "We will raise taxes. Yes we will," Sanders said. Sanders argued, however, that the taxes are worth it, given what American families will save in premiums. And, living up to his image as a self-declared Democratic socialist, he warned corporations and the richest Americans that they would pay more.
