Sam and Emma host Matthew Cortland, Senior Fellow at Data for Progress, to discuss Supplemental Security Income restorative/legislative efforts, and right to repair activist Louis Rossmann to discuss the change in right to repair laws after Biden's competition executive order was signed into law. Sam, Emma, and Matthew cover the structural differences in disability social securities, such as SSI versus SSDI, and the importance of SSI in helping folks without income. They then move onto the crippling drawbacks to SSI, stemming both from the US' cultural aversion to social safety nets and recent targeting from the right, including a maximum monthly supplement at a rate well below the poverty line and absurd qualifications that prevent disabled folks from saving assets for a rainy day or accepting help from friends unless they are willing to sacrifice their social security, before discussing what legislators are working to bolster SSI, and what number to text to push Schumer to include it in reconciliation (SIGN SSI NOW to 50409). Next, Louis Rossmann hops on to chat about the importance of the right to repair, how the issue is wrapped up in monopoly and anti-trust discussions, and what the fight for repair has looked like over the last decade. They cover the importance of the Massachusetts automotive right to repair bill, and the role of federalism in helping achieve targeted advancements in the accessibility of schematics and parts on a greater scale. Sam and Emma also chat Cori Bush success, Nina Turner disappointment, and developments in the new Biden eviction moratorium. And in the fun half Sam and Emma are joined by Sean McElwee, Founding Executive Director of Data for Progress, to discuss the disappointing results for Nina Turner in Ohio's 11th Congressional District primary. Sean and the gang specifically looks into the importance of not giving the democratic establishment material for bad faith attacks that draw away from policy discussion – because the dark money will almost always be there to capitalize on it. Sam and Emma expand the importance of knowing that power will always push back, and emphasize the importance of taking on battles where progress can actually be made, before watching Asa Hutchinson's awkward backtracking on his previous anti-vax mandate legislation, and Ben Shapiro's failure to understand how contagion works. They also chat with Oscar from NoLa on DACA, and another caller takes the wrong route to addressing transphobia and problematic comments from Vaush, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Dr. Michael Osterholm, the Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, to discuss the state of COVID-19 as it stands here in the States and around the world. Dr. Osterholm walks through the dual pandemics facing the globe right now – the one we have at home in the U.S. being tacked with vaccines, and the raging one going on in countless largely unvaccinated countries with no resources to take it on – and looks at the current spikes occurring internationally, including Tokyo, Iran, South Africa, and countless more. Then, he, Emma, and Sam explore the three main concerns with the Delta variant – including rises in infection rates, illness severity, and evading immune protection from vaccines or infection – they walk through differing mask efficacies, and how the patterns of this pandemic drastically differ from the pandemic of 1918. Lastly, the three of them look into how focusing on boosting the currently vaccinated population, while a legitimate concern, is not as important in preventing the further progression of variants as helping to bolster vaccination rates in countries with no pandemic infrastructure. Emma and Sam wrap of the first half by touching on the right's reprehensible disinformation campaign around COVID, from Alex Berenson's presence on Tucker Carlson and Ron DeSantis' destructive role as, you know, Governor of Florida. And in the Fun Half: Meghan McCain says #NotALLfoxhosts, defending Fox's vaccine coverage on the grounds that one host admitted to getting vaccinated, Sam looks into Joe Biden's response to Facebook's COVID misinformation and the importance of anti-trust solutions in pushing back on big tech, and Pradip from India picks up on the discussion of slavery as economically unviable and spitballs some takes on welfare. Then, Guy from Quebec chats political strategy in Canada versus the U.S., Fabio from Colombia calls in to inquire about the best debaters on the Left, the crew discusses the violent gap between American opinions on right of return for Cubans versus Palestinians, and Sam gives us one of his best name-drops yet. Kovidh from Iran calls in to discuss anti-imperialism, propaganda, and international left strategy, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam hosts Pulitzer Prize-winning Yale Historian David Blight to discuss his recent biography of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, and how the Reconstruction era lives on in our contemporary politics. Sam and Blight take a deep dive into Frederick Douglass the orator and the ways his politics and activism altered between radical and pragmatism. Then Sam and Blight place Douglass in the larger historical context of reconstruction and post-reconstruction and how we are still living in the political reality forged after the Civil War. Sam and Emma host author Clint Smith, staff writer at the Atlantic, to discuss his new book, How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America on how the legacy of slavery has been passed down and obscured through generations of storytelling, and the manner in which this manifests in modern society. They walk through the sites that Smith visits in his book – from Monticello, looking at how the stories of Thomas Jefferson perfectly encapsulate the cognitive dissonance of how Americans view ourselves, to Angola Prison as a symbol of modern enslavement literally build upon a plantation – and how the heirloom of ideology is passed down through every element of our society, through education, through infrastructure, and certainly through community policing measures. Smith explores his experiences at a Sons of Confederate Veterans celebration, and the importance of elevating empirical historical facts in making space for activists and organizers to express contemporary racism as carrying the remnants and residues of these systems through all elements of American society. Susan Collins helps Sam and Emma round it out with a discussion on her killer renewable energy tax, ensuring that those aiding our environment pay their fair share to use the roads. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma check in on the NYC Mayoral Race and how Eric Adams' suggestion of a 400:1 student to teacher ratio might actually not be a good idea, then Dave Rubin bombs because of Big Tech and the Liberal Agenda and Dana Bash forgets to even acknowledge AOC's comments before hitting on her CNN bipartisanship talking points in response, plus, your IMs! Sam and Emma host professor of African American studies Carol Anderson to discuss her latest book The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America on how the right to bear arms has been a means to suppress black Americans. Anderson details how black Americans throughout history have organized to defend themselves against state violence and racist uprisings. Anderson notes that black Americans' efforts to arm themselves were constant and well-founded given the violence perpetrated against them, however, they could never out-arm the white citizens who wished ill on them. Sam and Anderson then discuss the Black Panthers' open carry efforts to "police the police" and how "gun control" in California began as a means to disarm Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. Anderson wraps the conversation by discussing contemporary laws surrounding gun control, police brutality, and the discrepancy between gun carriers like Phalando Castile and Kyle Rittenhouse. And in the Fun Half: Biden is hopeful because of soap ads with interracial couples, what's productivity and will remote work change anything, tokenism in the modern GOP, Tucker Carlson says unvaccinated Americans are subject to "Medical Jim Crow," the politics of inclusion, Ben Domenech's complete misunderstanding of the Cold War, John Kennedy's vacuous reelection campaign video, plus your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Gabe Winant, professor of history at the University of Chicago, to discuss his new book, The Next Shift: The Fall of Industry and the Rise of Health Care in Rust Belt America. Next, Sam and Emma cover Rep. Pelosi’s Fear-of-Single-Payer, the Bessemer Union vote, and the republicans’ nitpicking at what an “Infrastructure” bill definitionally means. And in the Fun Half: Sam takes on taxonomies, we debate whether angry folks on Twitter are more powerful than Senator McCarthy’s legacy, and Lavinia from Brooklyn explores Big Tech’s algorithmic relationship with cancel culture. Andreas Malm joins Sam to discuss his new book, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Leaning to Fight in a World on Fire.” Andreas begins by explaining that while the pandemic has temporarily tamped down the climate movement, it has simultaneously led to a 7% drop in world-wide emissions and demonstrated how government can effectively intervene in the private sector during a crisis. Then, Sam asks Andreas to explain the two strategies of the climate movement, one being putting pressure on the government to pass policy and the other being reducing profits of fossil fuel companies through physically shutting down their operations. Andreas discusses the limitations of peaceful climate activism and argues for the need for a more radical flank in the movement. And finally, as it turns out, renewable energy is actually much cheaper to produce, but companies refuse to switch over because they can get away with a much higher markup on fossil fuels than they would be able to on renewables. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks a little football, compensation for college athletes goes before the Supreme Court, is Matthew McConaughey running for governor of Texas?, Lil Nas X is selling “blood soaked sneakers,” how to address gun violence, Peter Navarro spews lies about the origins of the coronavirus, plus your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Washington Post national politics reporter Dave Weigel to discuss the on-going union organizing efforts in Alabama and how Democrats are leveraging them to their political advantage. Weigel offers his take on how the Biden administration has operated differently so far from previous Democratic administrations, particularly how Biden has not (yet) scaled back ambitions to meet the political moment. Weigel and Sam also discuss the staffing efforts in DC and how young Democratic operatives are starting to rediscover LBJ-style material politics. Then Seneca Savoie of Homes Not Handcuffs in Austin joins us to discuss organizing efforts to end criminal charges against homelessness in Austin. And in the Fun Half: Sam agrees with Michael Knowles on cancel culture, why red states refuse to offer Medicaid expansion, Dave Rubin is putting on his trial lawyer hat, white-knuckling through cancel culture, Brian Kilmeade understands slavery because of Roots, a daylight saving debate, plus your IMs! On the fun half: Bernie calls out parliamentarian, says it's ridiculous that an unelected staffer makes decision about $15/hr. Sam and Emma give opinions on Bernie's strategy. Kyrsten Sinema does a sassy dip as she votes against $15 minimum wage. Mitch McConnell says $1.9T relief bill is unnecessary because economy is already bouncing back due to GOP efforts under Trump. The reality is that what holds most people back is their own mindset. If you think you have unlimited potential, within your circle of competence, you really do have unlimited potential within that circle. The circle of competence refers the range of things that you are really competent in. For instance, if you are not at all naturally athletic, you do not have unlimited potential in athletic pursuits. But provided you have a certain level of competence within a pursuit or skill, your potential is probably only being limited by what you mindset is.So increase the range of your mindset, and what you believe is possible for you to achieve. Those who have done incredible things have always been willing to experiment, to try things out and see if they work, and whether that’s diet, lifestyle, habits, or anything else, everyone is different, and so experimentation is often the only way you can know if something is right for you specifically.“When starting a new lifestyle, take it slowly and in stages” -Tai Lopez(click to tweet)Points to Keep In MindThe fuel you put in your body is going to affect your performance in a powerful wayMost people don’t pay nearly enough attention to how certain foods make them feelMany people are guided almost entirely by the pleasure of eatingGood eating lifestyle is not a diet, because it’s not limiting. It has been a news story impossible to miss for months and months. It’s called Brexit, a clever term combining “Britain” and “Exit.” That may be all you know about it, or you may be a step ahead and know that Brexit is a fight for Britain to leave the European Union. The Brexit saga is filled with controversy and infighting that can be difficult to understand for the typical person living in London, let alone over here in the States. This week we are diving in to “Brexit For Dummies” by Nicholas Wallwork. Nicholas is an international real estate expert, in fact, he wrote a “For Dummies” book on that topic too. January 15, 1999. Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Miriam Iles, estranged wife of a prominent heart surgeon, had been on the phone talking with her two sisters-in-law when the call abruptly went silent. They thought that a storm that was passing through must have interrupted the phone line. But after Miriam didn't show up the following day for the Sunday school class that she taught, a few people went to her home to check on her. What they saw through a window horrified them and the police were called. Law enforcement officers broke through the door and found the 47 year old woman dead of a gunshot. Detectives immediately focused their attention on her husband but he maintained his innocence, had an alibi, and none of the evidence collected matched him. Did Miriam's husband kill her as Police suspected? Join us as we discuss an elaborate plot of murder and learn how a well-regarded woman became the target of one person's rage.ZipRecruiter.
