We wrap up Season 5 with yet another remarkable leader from a most remarkable retailer. This week our guest is Satish Malhotra, the CEO of The Container Store (TCS), the leading specialty retailer of storage and organization products, custom closets, and in-home services. Satish took the helm of TCS last year after an amazing two decade run at Sephora where he helped drive their retail growth strategy as Chief Retail Officer and Chief Operating Officer of the Americas. We unpack what has TCS' success and momentum over the past 18 months, before delving into their plans to double its business over the next few years via it's 3 Pillars strategy: intensifying its product and service focus, expanding its reach (both digitally and by opening 80-100 new stores), and strengthening multiple capabilities. We also discuss how to overcome the cultural challenges that can impede any transformation effort and get Satish's views on how to navigate the coming choppy waters of a challenging economic outlook. But first we dip into the week in retail news, including dissecting the latest sales report from the US Census Bureau which seems to suggest storm clouds on the horizon. Then we take on the surprise news of Amazon' Deal Days, before a short riff on the importance of the week after Christmas. Then it's a trip to the retail graveyard with news of Sears Hometown's apparent pending demise and a quick take on H&M's recent sales report. We wrap up with Walmart's doubling down on omni-channel fulfillment while Nordstrom Rack struggles to make it work. Je me suis mise à genoux. This podcast episode highlights centuries of purpose breeding that allows certain dogs to be perfectly adapted for city bars, parks, and cramped studio apartments. It is part of the Down and Back: Stories From the American Kennel Club Archives series. Host Bud Boccone hunts down information and faithfully shares it in this fun and frisky format. History is still unclear as to whether a human chose to relocate an English Bulldog in France or if the Bulldog got a whiff of the Moulin Rouge in Paris and fled the English countryside for a taste of the avant-garde. Nonetheless, some dogs have been purposefully bred as companions for humans who desire to live amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s up to their human companions to give dogs a comfortable lifestyle but with proper care, any dog can be a city dog. Bonafide Bits: English Bulldogs were bred with jaws strong enough to pin a bull to the ground. In 1897, Toulouse-Lautrec included the portrait of a French Bulldog when he captured a saucy Paris night scene. Several Dali Lamas bred Lhasa Apsos in Buddhist monasteries. In 1893, the AKC officially recognized the distinctly American Boston Terrier. In 2018, a Great Dane was featured in New Yorker Magazine. Featured Breeds: Bulldog Kind but courageous, friendly but dignified, the Bulldog is a thick-set, low-slung, well-muscled bruiser whose “sourmug” face is the universal symbol of courage and tenacity. These docile, loyal companions adapt well to town or country. Discover more about Bulldogs at AKC’s Bulldog Breed Biography. Lhasa Apso The lavishly coated Lhasa Apso is a thousand-year-old breed who served as sentinels at palaces and monasteries isolated high in the Himalayas. Smart, confident, and complex, Lhasas are family comedians but regally aloof with strangers. Discover more about Lhasa Apsos at AKC’s Lhasa Apso Breed Biography. Havanese Havanese, the only dog breed native to Cuba, are cheerful little dogs with a spring in their step and a gleam in their big, brown eyes. These vivacious and sociable companions are becoming especially popular with American city dwellers. Discover more about Havanese at AKC’s Havanese Breed Biography. In this episode, we catch up on some of Kim's regular patients including the Coton de Tulear who needs bribing to go down the stairs, the Pug who is a bit wobblier than usual, and the Tibetan Spaniel who needs to spend time on a wobble cushion. We also talk about how good most pet carers are at getting stuck in with their pet's physiotherapy treatments and exercises. And how Kim approaches this to maximise the chances of success. Sorry for the variable sound quality in this episode but Kim was in transit to a conference so we had to make do. This week was a busy week for Kim. In this episode, we catch up on some of her regular patients that she visited for the first time in the New Year. They include the Coton de Tulear who is back to full health now after the pancreatitis scare late last year; the ex-racing Greyhound who had neospora; and, the Whippet who had a fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE) some years ago. Kim also updates us on the recovery of a Tibetan Spaniel who had surgery for a spinal (intervertebral) disc problem in December. And the Weimaraner with lymphoedema from the last episode. We also hear about a new patient. A 6-year old Golden retriever who bunny hops on walks after having ruptured the cruciate ligament in both knees over the last couple of years. Kim is hopeful that strengthening exercises will help her. We round the episode off with some general discussions. Thanks as always for listening and look out for the next episode which will be on elbow dysplasia.
[APWW PGM #695] [Originally aired in 2014] The southwest of Madagascar is a land of fishermen, mining prospectors and cattle ranchers—not exactly a homogenous region in terms of lifestyle or ethnicity. But one thing that unites all the people of this region is the giddy, electric guitar-driven boogie music known as tsapiky (pronounced tsa-PEEK). First created in the late 1970s, tsapiky has become the required music at large family ceremonies (circumcisions, weddings, and especially, funerals), where music and partying goes nonstop for three days or more. In this Hip Deep program, we unfold the unique origins of this music, and other traditional styles of southwest Madagascar. And we’ll meet some of tsapiky’s great guitar practitioners: Damily, Teta and Pascal. We’ll hear a song from Damily’s recent public concert in Tulear—his first in 14 years–and sample a variety of beautiful music from this remote and remarkable corner of Madagascar.
