Carey Killion joins the show this week to share how marathons brought her to bird dogs, facing failure head on, and how she is committed to bettering the breed of Weimaraners. Carey is refreshingly honest about her pursuits, whether that be making mistakes along the way with her dogs, tips to better show dogs in field trials, and joining the board of the Weimaraner Club of America to add her knowledge and passion to bettering the sporting aspects of a breed that has taken a wayward turn over the years in terms of it's sporting talent. Gretchen Stephenson joins me again to talk about the Shooting Ratings tests for Weimaraners. These field events were developed in the 1950s as a way to objectively evaluate the hunting skills of Weimaraners and are put on by the Weimaraner Club of America. AKC's hunting tests for all pointing breeds were actually based on these tests! There are distinct differences, however, which we discuss. Leveraging both his legal and investment experience, Joel seeks to ensure that the NFP Retirement practice is cutting-edge in providing exceptional client experiences at all levels. Joel came to 401(k) Advisors in February 2006 from Hewitt Associates with over 10 years of technical experience related to 401(k) plans and ERISA issues. Prior to this, he practiced law with the law firm Fennemore Craig, P.C. in Phoenix, Arizona.Joel earned his BA from Tufts University; his JD from the Washington College of Law at the American University; and, his LL.M in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center. He has passed the FINRA Series 6, 63, and 65 exams and is a frequent speaker at industry events, such as The Society for Human Resource Management. In 2009, 2010, and 2011 he was named among the prestigious 401kWire / 401kExchange “Top 60" and "300 Most Influential Advisors in Defined Contribution” list and received Top Ten status for his asset category. On a personal side, Joel is an avid sports enthusiast, a collector of multimedia art, and enjoys spending time on the beach with his family and Fitz and Ginger (their Weimaraner and Vizsla, respectively) and coaching the boys to football championships! In this episode, Eric and Joel Shapiro discuss:Three essential documents for making prudent investment decisionsCreating a well-defined IPS The fiduciary investment review scorecard system The purpose of writing a meeting minutes document Key Takeaways:The investment policy statement (IPS), fiduciary investment review, and meeting minutes are documents that represent the past, present, and future of the investment process and provide a clear roadmap for the committee to follow. The IPS is a critical document that should provide clear guidelines for fiduciaries to make informed decisions. It should be easily understandable and should have separate sections for different asset types. A well-defined IPS should typically lead committee members to the same conclusion, even without an advisor's input. The fiduciary investment review is another important tool for evaluating investments. The information presented should align with ERISA's dictates on prudence and should break down investments into different categories, evaluating them based on style analytics, risk return against benchmarks, peer group rankings, and qualitative factors like manager tenure and expense ratios. Meeting minutes document the committee's decision-making process and provide a record of the discussions and actions taken. They demonstrate that the committee is following a sound process and making prudent decisions based on the information available.“To the young ERISA practitioner, don't be afraid of the committee member who asks tough questions. Engage them. Those are the individuals, frankly, that are going to make you a better practitioner.” - Joel ShapiroConnect with Joel Shapiro:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-shapiro-687b044/ Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information contained herein is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. It is not intended to provide a specific recommendation of any type of product or service discussed in this presentation or to provide any warranties, financial advice or legal advice. The specific facts and circumstance of all qualified plans can vary and the information contained in this podcast may or may not apply to your individual circumstances or to your plan or client plan specific circumstances.
In this lengthier episode, Emily talks to three different blind dog owners about running with their blind dogs. We explore the different training involved in canicrossing with a blind dog and talk about the different dogs and their responses to canicrossing without sight. We talked to Anjelica about her Labrador, Juno, Christine about her Cocker Spaniel, Harmony, and Becky about her (sadly no longer with us) Weimaraner, Evie. We hope you enjoy their stories and advice for other blind dog owners.
In s3e53 of Platemark, hosts Ann Shafer and Tru Ludwig conclude their conversation with Carol Wax, artist and author of The Mezzotint: History and Technique. Carol recently published the second edition of The Mezzotint, expanding greatly in every area from the 1990 first edition. As she tells us, there is a better break down of rocking the copper plates, and of inking and printing them, plus there are new chapters about printing papers and the history of the medium and how it fits in the greater history of prints. They talk about the early history of mezzotint, whether one can over rock a plate, what happens when you do, and about Carol's dislike of perspectival composition, all the machines and their personalities, and her dogs Cecil, the Weimaraner, and Delia, the new dog in her life. The conversation ran long, so the episode is split into two parts. Carol Wax (American, born 1953). Singer I, 1984. Mezzotint. 11 ½ x 8 in. Courtesy of the artist. Mershimer is a master at making corrections/changes–the likes of which have not been seen since the 17th century. The thrilling story of the conservationist who pioneered the use of dogs in combating poachers to protect wildlife in South Africa's game reserves. Barely out of his teens, one of Conraad's first brushes with the reality of life at the frontline of conservation was when he shot the leader of a poaching gang during an ambush in Windy Ridge game reserve. Much of Conraad's work involving dogs is a continuous struggle against industrial-scale bushmeat poachers, who strangle game in snares, an even greater threat to wildlife than rhino horn poachers as the overburdened courts seem interested only in endangered species. He also works to catch poachers of critically endangered pangolins, the most trafficked animal in the world. Conraad decided to use his almost telepathic rapport with dogs to tackle the poaching crisis sweeping South Africa. His first anti-poaching dog, a Weimaraner named Zingela, became an inseparable companion. Zingela saved Conraad's life on numerous occasions – once when Conraad was about to be assassinated by two fellow rangers hired by poachers. Conraad's story is an epic of modern-day African wildlife conservation, spiced with adventure, courage and romance. Conraad De Rosner was born and schooled in Gqeberha, then Port Elizabeth. He studied nature conservation before starting work, in 1993, at Windy Ridge Game Park in KwaZulu-Natal. In 2009, he was appointed assistant antipoaching manager at SabiSands game reserve. In 2011, he formed his company, K9 Conservation, at Thanda Game Reserve. In 2015, he moved to his base training farm in Hoedspruit, where for the past six years and more, he has developed and expanded his training of rangers and dogs.

Shot in the throat! Ghostly Faces! Meet the resident Bird Cage Theatre ghosts as some shared pain of the violent deaths. Others revealed their lives as actors, drinkers, gamblers, prostitutes or gunfighters to today's special guest, medium and paranormal investigator Rob Gutro, on the museum's ghost tour. Rob and his friend photographed faces of 2 ghosts in a painting and a mirror. Rob also sketched some ghosts he encountered. The Bird Cage Theatre is a very haunted and historic landmark in Tombstone, Arizona. It was a big part of the wild days of the old west in the United States. Because of the raw emotional events that occurred there, a number of people have chosen to stay behind as earth-bound ghosts. Rob encounters ghosts who want to share their stories whenever he travels. He calls himself a "medium rare" because he's still learning about spirit communications. Rob is a meteorologist and provides scientific and logical explanation about spirit communications. He also volunteers for Dachshund and Weimaraner rescues and has several dogs. His books include Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead and Ghosts, and Insights from a Medium.
To a pet parent, to lose a pet means to lose a child. The love we share with our pets never dies, and the author proves our pets do communicate with us from the other side. Learn how dogs, cats, horses and some birds have the intelligence and ability to send signs to the living after they pass. Take comfort in knowing our pets are around us from time to time and recognize the signs they give. Learn how they wait for us when it's our time, what a pet's ashes can do, and the difference between ghosts and spirits. Learn how and why living pets can sense entities. Rob discusses what happened when he took his dogs on a ghost investigation and how the spirits of Rob's 2 dogs and dogs from three other mediums communicated with them from the other side. He will also share about spirit cats and how a ghostly dog rescued a girl. Rob Gutro is an author, paranormal investigator and medium with Inspired Ghost Tracking of Maryland. Since he was a child he could receive messages from ghosts or spirits who have crossed over. As a scientist, he also provides some scientific explanations about how energy is the baseline for the afterlife and the medium that entities use to communicate. In 2005, Rob's late puppy passed and inspired Rob to write his first book and enabled him to communicate with pets. Rob participates in private paranormal investigations, helps ghosts cross over, and has provided countless messages from people or pets as ghosts or spirits. He lived in a haunted house, too! Rob volunteers for Dachshund and Weimaraner rescues and has several dogs.

We discuss:The challenges of understanding and treating pain in animalsTakeaways from the landmark Mills et al. (2020) study "Pain and Problem Behavior in Cats and Dogs"Direct and indirect effects of pain on the nervous system and behaviorHow to be a "pain detective" to help your vet diagnose medical issuesDr. Murphy's bio:Dr Kathy Murphy (BVetMed, DPhil, CVA, CLAS, MRCVS) is a veterinary surgeon and neuroscientist. She graduated from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons UK in 1999, initially working in mixed clinical practice before studying for two post graduate clinical qualifications with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Laboratory Animal Science. In 2009 she was awarded a highly prestigious Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship to study for her PhD, in Behavioral Neuroscience, at The Queens College, University of Oxford, UK. She subsequently worked in the USA as Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Anesthesiology at the Icahn School of Medicine NYC, where her research into the long term effects of anesthesia on learning and memory contributed to a change to the safety advice for the use of general anesthesia in children. She moved back to the UK in 2013, to take up clinical-academic positions at the University of Oxford and subsequently Newcastle University, and concurrently completed a Residency in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia with the European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, during which she became increasingly interested in how pain re-models the nervous system and this can manifest as behavioral problems in pets.Dr Murphy founded, and is now Director of, Barking Brains Ltd (a neuroscience outreach platform for the animal behavior and training community), which focuses on translating neuroscientific information into practical and useful information for people interested in animal behavior. In order to maximize the impact of her diverse interests and skill set, Dr Murphy teamed up with Behavior Vets LLC in 2022 as the new Chief Scientific Officer. We are joined by Pavel Francev this week to breakdown all of the elements and occurrences you see on a video he recently posted of a trip he took last year. The end of World War II saw thousands of American servicemen and servicewomen returning home to the United States and Canada, many of whom brought home new dogs they'd met while in occupied Germany. These “new” dogs were unlike the setters and Pointers that dominated the bird dog scene in North America. Defying labels, these dogs could search, point, retrieve, and track. Some of these dogs fit in well with the American field trial culture and found success alongside setters and Pointers. Others, however, struggled to find success in the competitive environment that favored fast, big-running dogs over the versatile, jack-of-all-trades dogs produced in Germany. As the new breeds looked to gain a foothold in North America, some clubs sought marketing help to take advantage of the growing influence of television and mass media to generate interest in their breed. The Weimaraner is a classic example of publicity and popularity gone wrong—while the efforts to market the breed were wildly successful and led to an explosion in popularity, the dog failed to live up to all the wonder-dog hype and quickly fell out of favor. As with anything, popularity is a double-edged sword; breed clubs have long sought to straddle the line between promoting the dogs to hunters without losing control of the messaging and, ultimately, the natural hunting abilities. The introduction of the versatile breeds from the European continent eventually led to the formation of NAVHDA, which represented a stark departure from the competitive nature of traditional field trials. This new system was based on the German versatile hunting dog system with some changes made to better suit the North American hunting traditions. What began as an idea in a living room in Canada eventually became an international club with thousands of dogs tested annual and membership growing every year. The late part of the twentieth century saw a major transformation in the availability of technology and information, ultimately culminating in the introduction of the internet and, later, social media. Suddenly, hunters could connect with like-minded people across the globe. Breeding decisions were influenced by genetic testing. Litters could be advertised and promoted with the click of a button. Information that was once limited to members of certain clubs is now widely available to anyone with an internet connection. This modern era is characterized by technology, information, and—ultimately—connection. What does this new era mean to the future of breed clubs and registries? Craig has a few ideas about how these organizations will need to change, or else risk becoming irrelevant. Tune in to hear his vision and encouragement for riding the inevitable waves of change. Graeme Hall talks to owners of dogs that have very strong opinions about their walks. He catches up with Lisa and Linda from TV's Dogs Behaving Very Badly whose German Shepherd cross Buddy would often just plonk himself down in the road on a walk and refuse to move. Graeme explains how he got Buddy moving again through the right body language, tone of voice, and clever use of the lead. The Dogfather also gives advice to a listener whose Weimaraner refuses to come back to be put on lead at the end of a walk. The secret might just lie in some of his favourite treats... Do you have a question for The Dogfather? Send Graeme a voice note and a video of your pesky pooch to talkingdogs@avalonuk.com.

Episode SummaryOne of the common human experiences that links many of us is the death of a pet. This episode explores the very real grief that pet owners often feel when the animal they have loved deeply dies.Episode NotesFor some there is a lingering guilt or embarrassment at the intensity of human grief for an animal. We may have the feeling that such feelings should be reserved for the death of human loved ones. I affirm this grief and defend the spiritual integrity of grieving the death of a pet. I believe that the intensity of felt grief is directly proportional to the intensity of bestowed love. That is the deepest truth of grief and love I know. The level of grief we feel at the passing of a beloved animal or human being is directly proportional to the level of love we bestowed upon them. Great grief comes from great love. Small love produces small grief. It is always so. There is the issue of why it is easier for many people to easily and fully love a pet, but not so easily love other human beings. Betty and I have raised several guide dogs for the blind and have lived through the death of many of them. This episode takes up the story of the death of Miles, a devoted Weimaraner, who was bestowed on me by my son Max. The story of the death of Miles is not only the occasion for accepting and affirming our love of animals, but also a reflection on the many forms grief can take as the repayment for love. The episode takes the form of a thank you letter I wrote to Miles' veterinarian who euthanized Miles after a long painful illness.

John and Alex go posh: yes, it's a trip to the old money football mecca of Cap Ferrat for the clash between Villefranche Saint-Jean Beaulieu and Rousset Ste Victoire. The visitors return to Provence with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal by Sofiane Sidi Ali, but in Elyes Ayeche, Villefranche's no. 10, Footy on the Med encounters a prodigious, but baffling, talent. With an exquisite touch, strength and pace, why is the 27-year-old Ayeche playing in the lower reaches of French football? John and Alex fail to find the answer but have a blast at one of world football's most upmarket locales, complete with mini-ultras, Ferraris, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mr Woo and a tale of a miraculous Weimaraner. Oh, and some time travel to QPR v Swansea. Recorded on 29 January 2022 at Stade JSSJB, 2 Bd du Général de Gaulle, Cap Ferrat.More Information at FootyOnTheMed.com
