When the world feels heavy, many of us look to books for distraction, inspiration, or reassurance. Today's guest has a unique spin on what she's seeking and would love Anne's help in figuring out how the types of reads she wants right now fit into her existing to-be-read (TBR) system. Émilie Weidl lives in Wales, where she's taken a year off before starting her PhD. When she's not reading or volunteering, you'll likely find her out for a walk or a hike, exploring the beautiful country around her. Émilie has always had a good grasp on her reading tastes, but lately she's found that the historical fiction she's always loved isn't working well for her. She's also having a hard time reading nonfiction because the topics she's been drawn to in the past feel harrowing right now. Plus, she's found that the TBR management system she's relied on for ages isn't work as well as it used to. Émilie's looking for absolutely gut-wrenching books that will distract her from her real-world worries, and a system that will help her tee up books she'll really enjoy reading right now. Anne has ideas for Émilie, as you'll hear today. Suggest gut-wrenching reads you think Émilie might enjoy and see the full list of titles discussed today on our show notes page at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/473. We always have exciting things on the horizon in the Modern Mrs Darcy Book Club, and right now is no exception. Next week, we're going to learn all about Commonplace Books: what they are, and how to keep one, also why you might want to. When you join the club, you get immediate access to this class and all of our past events, along with our 2025 Summer Reading Guide which is coming out in May. What People Do
84: Richard Orodenker uses commonplace books

What People Do

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2024 56:03

It's been a few weeks now that I've been keeping a commonplace book. A few hours after discovering the concept and chasing some internet rabbit holes, I found Richard Orodenker, a former Temple University faculty member, who uses a commonplace book, has studied historical examples of them, and used them as projects in some of “Intellectual Heritage” classes with college students. I immediately contacted him and asked if he'd be interviewed on the books, their use, and his practice and study with him. He agreed. And, thus, another episode of What People Do was borne ... tada! Orodenker employs a commonplace book with quotations and things from books he's read on the right-hand side of a journal spread, and his own journaling thoughts and reflections on the left-hand side. Commonplace books are sometimes nothing but scrawled notes, and other times gorgeous, intricate, and artistically wondrous works from artists and scientists. I have found the commonplace book helpful as a way to note, reflect on, and re-read things that jumped out at me in all the things I try (new psychology exercises, new spiritual exercises, journaling) and all the things I read (nonfiction, prayers, poems, websites, articles). I keep my commonplace book and journal separate for now, but maybe someday I'll swing the Orodenker way and throw them together! If you love smart professors, old things made new again, and journaling, reading and self-reflection, this episode is a must-listen.   For further exploration: Orodenker's The Common Place Book Project appears here. If you're into baseball and the Philaldephia Phillies (they're my arbitrarily chosen MLB team), enjoy this. Orodenker has written about sports writing for some more scholarly works as well, including this and this.

In short, a commonplace book is a recording of information and insights you want to remember today rather than a book Tim tells us how he went about writing and publishing the book? What were the issues he faced? How did he publish it himself? What is the VIVA model and how can we use it?Plus other fantastic Points of Impact. All entries about leadership, in the Commonplace Book, had to audition for inclusion against more than 900, other entries Tim had recorded on the subject, the competition was fierce and what didn't get included is possible material for another volume down the road. Lesson 211:  Get A Commonplace Book A commonplace book is essential and we should all have one. It's essentially a journal. A place where you put in what I love to call "all of the things".  Commonplace books are a way to compile knowledge, usually by writing information into books. Such books are essentially scrapbooks filled with items of every kind: recipes, quotes, letters, poems, tables of weights and measures, proverbs, prayers, legal formulas. I use Evernote as my handwriting could do with some work but it is simple to use and there is a free version. But really any note app would do. The idea is to write in things that are important to you and go back often to learn.  PROMPT: What things will you write in your commonplace book? #LessonsWithAKing https://www.instagram.com/israeliekanem/ (@israeliekanem) https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=QN68BLL5D4552 (Support LWAK) Support this podcast

Welcome listeners to the 15th installment in the Anechoic Chamber audio documentary series. Our guest for this edition is San Francisco-based artist and acoustic researcher Michael Gendreau. Gendreau has been active as a solo artist or musical collaborator since the early 1980s, gradually diverging from the realm of conventional recorded music by recording the sounds of built structures and amplifying them in performance scenarios. This use of buildings themselves as a kind of “loudspeaker” is one dramatic and unequivocally physical aspect of his work, but certainly not the only one. With his several decades long research into the concept of parataxis - that is, the juxtaposition of multiple pieces of verbal information that have no immediately clear relation to one another - Gendreau has immersed himself in the worlds of linguistics and logic, while also alighting on the ideal conceptual apparatus with which to animate works of experimental music. Among his other sonic adventures, Gendreau has also made his own unique contribution to the world of so-called “turntablism,” using the volatile medium of lathe-cut records as a performance tool. From his early work with ‘zine production to his publication of the densely packed yet accessible Commonplace Book of Parataxis, Gendreau's creative life has been held together by several common golden threads of elementalism, openness to collaboration, and - in his own words - a belief that ““Creativity arises with effective interaction between two modes of thinking.” music used in this episode: Michael Gendreau: “Drowning” 12” and selections from “Concerted Structures” CD Crawling with Tarts: “Cameo and “Candy Tooth Ceylon” Collision Stories: untitled 2 and 3 from “Those Missing Will Complete Us” Artist links: http://www.michaelgendreau.net http://www.publiceyesore.com/catalog.php?pg=3&pit=140 https://soundcloud.com/michael-lee-gendreau http://www.collisionstories.com/ http://rajar.bandcamp.com/releases Anechoic Chamber links: donate via Paypal - tbwb@protonmail.com general host info: www.thomasbeywilliambailey.net

He also shares more about his reading as an adult, as well as his habit of commonplacing quotations. Commonplace Quotes: …but I was glad to sing again too; it had been a greater loss that I realized in that particular wintering which saw the waning of my voice. It wasn’t about the vanity of being able to trill out a fine song; it was about the joy of singing for its own sake. Katherine Ma Michael explains to Adam in the last book of Milton’s Paradise Lost, that tyranny exists in human society because every individual in such a society is a tyrant within himself, or at least is if he conforms acceptably to his social surroundings. Northrup Frye The Gods that are wiser than Learning But kinder than Life have made sure No mortal may boast in the morning That even will find him secure.   from “A Rector’s Memory” by Rudyard Kipling Time, Real and Imaginary by Samuel Taylor Coleridge On the wide level of a mountain’s head, (I knew not where, but ’twas some faery place) Their pinions, ostrich-like, for sails out-spread, Two lovely children run an endless race, A sister and a brother ! This far outstripp’d the other ; Yet ever runs she with reverted face, And looks and listens for the boy behind : For he, alas! is blind! The Scottish nature writer Jim Crumley takes the Slightly Foxed team on a tour of literary landscapes, from the lochs of the Trossachs and the mountainous Cairngorms to Aldo Leopold’s sand county in Wisconsin and Barry Lopez’s Arctic. Together they trace the chain of writers who have influenced Jim, from Robert Burns and Wordsworth to Thoreau and Walt Whitman, and see nature through the eyes of his hero, the great Scottish naturalist and photographer Seton Gordon. They discuss how folklore has demonized the wolf while Jim believes its reintroduction could hugely benefit the ecology of the Scottish landscape. And finally they venture off the beaten track with this month’s wide-ranging reading recommendations. Please find links to books, articles, and further reading listed below. It wasn't a really good analogy then and I think I've done it even less justice this time around.

A commonplace book, as eighteenth-century British people generally understood the term, was a handwritten document within which memories of various kinds could be captured and reused. But what was the purpose of this mnemonic exercise, and in what context were they created? Was there a contemporary fashion for maintaining records of this type? And what can we, as historians, do with the resulting artefacts, which survive in significant numbers? In this lecture, David Allan answers these and other questions, and demonstrates how aspects of the past experiences of literate human lives can be recovered.
