By day, Justin Mondeik applies his technical skills in engineering; by night and weekend, he races Super Late Model cars. From racing snowmobiles at age four to competing just one level below NASCAR, Justin has built a career on technical skill, hands-on passion, and relentless drive. In this episode, he shares how a technical education prepared him for success on and off the track—and how motorsports can help manufacturers reach the next generation of talent. In this conversation, Justin takes us inside the highly technical world of racing—from chassis dynamics and car setups to the conditioning and precision it takes to win.We explore how manufacturers are using racing sponsorships not just for brand exposure, but as a creative workforce strategy to recruit skilled, hands-on talent. It's a conversation that'll get you thinking about how education & industry can leverage ultra-creative ways to engage the next generation of workforce talent.Listen to learn:Hear what it's like to be behind the wheel of a race car, and all the unseen work that goes into winningWhy hands-on experience and technical training give racers an edgeThe science—and occasional mystery—behind setting up a winning carHow educators can leverage students' hobbies to engage them in hands-on learningHow companies can tap into motorsports to recruit the next generation of talent3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Technical education can give students an edge—on and off the track. Justin's background in mechanical design from Northcentral Technical College and Michigan Tech gives him a competitive advantage in racing—from car setup to real-time problem-solving. That same hands-on, systems-based thinking is exactly what manufacturers need in their workforce today.2. Motorsports audiences are filled with future skilled workers. Fans who show up at the track tend to be mechanically inclined, hands-on, and deeply interested in how things work—traits that align closely with careers in manufacturing, machining, and engineering. These are often the same students who thrive in tech ed programs.3. Industrial employers can benefit by getting creative with their workforce outreach strategies. One of Justin's manufacturing sponsors used his car and race-day presence to launch a targeted hiring campaign—and successfully recruited new employees. Since there's so much overlap in racing fans and technical talent, it's a creative place for manufacturers to immerse themselves and engage with a potential workforce.Resources in this Episode:Connect with Justin Mondeik Racing: https://www.justinmondeikracing.com/Connect with Justin on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | X | TikTokWe want to hear from you! Nitrogen has long been the engine that has propelled agriculture to productive new heights. It sparked an agricultural revolution, benefitting farmers and helping feed the world. While nitrogen has many positives, concerns have been raised regarding overreliance and in environmental areas. Dr. Hugh Gorman of Michigan Tech is among those closely watching this situation. Gorman said the process of producing ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen is one of the great advancements in American history. He said he's optimistic rewarding sustainable practices will help alleviate current areas of concern.Gorman authored the book, “The Story of N: A Social History of the Nitrogen Cycle and the Challenge of Sustainability.”New technologies, including those at Redox, are poised to help growers optimize nitrogen use in the future.

John Wooden once said "Make friendship a fine art." If that is the case then Rex Sharp is Michelangelo. It has never been about where he has been or the athletic training facilities he has designed while at those schools, or the committees he has lead or been on, or the Hall of Fames that he is currently in. It has been about the people he has come in contact with over his 45 year career as an athletic trainer and how he can help them. That career started as a student athletic trainer at New Albany High School, New Albany, IN under NATA HOF member Jerry Bell and Don Ogle. Then in 1975 Rex made the trip to Muncie, IN to attend Ball State University. While at Ball State he won the National Athletic Trainers' Association Robert H. Gunn Scholarship for the nation's outstanding student athletic trainer in 1978. After graduation from Ball State he took a teaching job/athletic trainer at his high school alma mater in New Albany. After two years he decided attend graduate school. His uncle Randy Owsley was the head athletic trainer at Michigan Tech, a NCAA division II school in Houghton, MI. Rex decided to take the offer from Randy and spend 2 years in the upper peninsula getting his master's degree and ton of experience on his own. Next he was on to at the time was Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State. He was the first athletic trainer there and grew the program into a new athletic training facility and two GA athletic trainers. Then a phone call from Jim Dickerson changed the trajectory of his career. Ball State needed a Head Athletic Trainer and they were calling on Rex to lead the program back to prominence. Rex spent 11 years at Ball State and arguably some of the most successful years of the athletic training program. From new facilities, faculty, and athletic training students that have gone on to lead the profession. In 1996 Rex left Ball State for the University of Missouri. He spent 25 years at MIZZOU and again impacted the development of new athletic training facilities, team physician coverage, increasing athletic training staff, and started an integrated health care team to provide mental health support to MIZZOU athletes. One of the first in the country. Finally the establishment of an Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. In his time at MIZZOU he was on many prestigious safe guard and advisory committees for student-athlete health. Rex and his staff were recognized as the Athletic Training Staff of the year in 2000 and 2011 for the Big 12 Conference. He retired from MIZZOU in 2020. In 2021 he accepted the Director of Sports Medicine position at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL Rex was inducted into the Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor in 2005, The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. The Missouri Athletic Trainers' Hall of Fame in 2018. And the New Albany High School Hall of Fame in 2018. He currently resides in Daytona Beach, FL with his wife Eileen. They are the parents of three adult children, daughter Audrey and twins Adam and Jared.

For more information please visit the links below www.UPPAA.org www.UPNotable.com www.amazon.com/Great-Seney-Fire-History-Walsh/dp/0578959089 GREGORY M. LUSK, a native Yooper, who grew up in lower Michigan and southern California, has two grown sons and now lives in Hancock, Michigan, with his wife, Sandra. He spent the long, dry summer of 1976 helping to suppress the largest, most costly forest fire that had burned in Michigan since 1908. In early August, he left his regular duties as a fire management specialist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in Marquette to work on the fire as the assistant Fire Boss for the State. His experiences several years earlier in Vietnam as a platoon leader were as valuable as his degree in forestry from Michigan Tech and his extensive training in forest fire behavior in the effort. The leaves had fallen, and the early winter snow was starting to fall by the time he got home. Long after he retired as the Upper Peninsula State fire supervisor in 1997, he dug out his news clippings, maps, and notes and began writing the history of the Great Seney fire. He was partly motivated by the aphorism that "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"; with hopes that this account will help others remember this essential piece of Michigan history. "Greg Lusk is a native Yooper who had a front-row seat for the Seney Fire. Specifically, he left his job as a fire specialist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to become the Assistant Fire Boss for the State's suppression of the Seney Fire. As such, Lusk would need to call on both his experience as a seasoned veteran of Vietnam as a platoon leader as well as his degree in forestry from Michigan Tech to succeed. An inveterate and meticulous record-keeper, he unearthed his many boxes of official and unofficial documentation after his retirement to write The Great Seney Fire.

This week we are joined by Mitch of Polar Filament. A filament manufacturer that did not actually intend to start making filament, but they make some awesome materials right here in the USA! Based in Troy, Michigan, near Detroit, Polar has an interesting history surrounded by industrial manufacturing and realizing that if they wanted the PERFECT tolerances and to be able to control filament, they had to do it themselves! Some about Mitch and Polar: Mitch is a Software Engineer from Michigan Tech. He worked at TI Automotive, Epic, and Kuka Robotics and then co-founded Polar Filament along with two friends. Mitch works on the R&D side of things, which is mostly PLC programming, database/software design for the filament analytics, and experimenting with new materials. Polar Filament is a brand name for the filament manufactured by Douglas Innovation. In addition to Polar Filament, Douglas Innovation also does white-label manufacturing for other filament brands. Polar Filament was born out of necessity because it was too challenging to get reliable and consistent filament that didn't take months to arrive. Production is rooted in the automotive industry, so most of the quality standards are dictated by the strict requirements of the big automotive manufacturers. The most important parts of producing reliable filament is to measure everything. "Good Filament" shouldn't be subjective, but measured and quantifiable. Measuring and logging manufacturing metrics are what allow consistent results every time. Every single spool leaves a footprint, and the manufacturing data can be looked up. Recently, the focus of Polar Filament has started shifting into new materials (like PHA and Nylon) as well as novelty filaments (like color-changing, sparkly, and silk). In today's environment, innovation is recognized as a critical business practice, but do companies encourage innovation to the fullest? Do business leaders feel secure in allowing ideas to grow and potentially sprout into a completely new organization? In this episode, Dr. Andre LePlume shares insights from his extensive research on spinout ventures explaining how companies can benefit from encouraging employees to form internal corporate ventures and pursue innovative ideas. Based on his book, Spinout-Ventures-Transitioning-Employees-Entrepreneurs, he also expresses his view that the best new companies aren't founded in garages, but rather come from a place of keen knowledge and understanding of the needs in a market. Episode Highlights: - Defining Spinout Ventures: Spinouts are created using knowledge and resources transferred from a parent organization. They can ultimately benefit the company even if the spinout founder creates a new company as it may offer needed services. - Encouraging Innovation: Andre points out the need for businesses to create an innovative culture, allowing employees the freedom to explore and develop new ideas internally and externally. - Success in Spinouts - These founders typically have greater experience, are more knowledgeable, and have positive support systems compared to other founders. - Case Study - Zoom: Zoom emerged as a successful spinout from Cisco, highlighting the potential of spinouts to revolutionize industries. - Navigating Legal Challenges: He notes the evolving legal landscape around non-competes and intellectual property, and how businesses can manage these issues to encourage spinouts. - Recommended Reading: "The Innovator's Dilemma" by Clayton Christensen; "Crossing the Chasm" by Geoffrey Moore; and "Zero to One" by Peter Thiel.
