Serial entrepreneur Dom Einhorn is the CEO of Uniqorn, and truly a fascinating person. Listen in as we chat about his interest in sports franchises (especially rugby) & Masters of Trivia, and get his advice to future tech start-ups, this week on Saving America! Thanks for joining me for this episode! I'm a Houston- based attorney, run an HR Consulting company called Claremont Management Group, and am a tenured professor at the University of St. Thomas. I've also written several non-fiction political commentary books: Bad Deal for America (2022) explores the Vegas-style corruption running rampant in Washington DC, while The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures (2018) analyzes – and grades – the leadership qualities of the past 100 years of U.S. presidents. Intro We're joined today by a familiar voice, Dr Paolo Molignini. Paolo will be leaving us soon, so this month we thought we would give a little insight into one of the people behind the podcast. Paolo is a postdoctoral research associate in the Theory of Condensed Matter group here at the Cavendish, bringing together elements of nonequilibrium physics, topological phases of matter, quantum optics and quantum simulation. Born in Switzerland, he gained his BSc, MSc, and PhD in Physics from ETH Zurich before taking up a postdoctoral position in the Quantum Systems Engineering group at Oxford. His research involves developing several software applications for modelling quantum systems, including UNIQORN, which applies machine learning to model systems of ultra-cold atoms. On top of this, Paolo has found time to contribute to several outreach programmes; producing a series of videos on superconductors during his time at Oxford, creating a doodle video on topological insulators for the first online Cambridge Science Festival, as well as hosting a monthly podcast looking at the people behind the physics research taking place at the Cavendish. Today, we'll talk about his experiences growing up in southern Switzerland, his path from Civil Engineer to Physicist, the work he does as a theoretician working in an experimental laboratory, and where this will take him next. Stay with us… Please help us get better by taking our quick survey! Your feedback will help us understand how we can improve in the future. Thank you for your time.[00:36] – Guest's intro[02:02] – Current role at the Cavendish [03:00] – More about Topological materials[04:37] – Early interest in Science [06:20] – Choosing Physics [11:00] – Gravitating towards Condensed matter physics [14:30] – Finding the PhD role and finding funding [18:05] – In the news this month we talk about phase transitions. Whether we boil water or cook pasta, a phase transition is taking place. Matter can appear in many more different phases, some of which have an inherently quantum origin, such as superfluids or ferromagnets. While some of the classical phase transitions have been known for centuries, in recent years we have started to discover and study new exciting kinds of phase transitions at the quantum level which could be soon harnessed for incredible new technologies.[21:41] – Further News discussion with the guest Dr Paolo Molignini: Extending topological invariants to finite temperatures [24:23] – Further News discussion with the guest Dr Paolo Molignini: Making an insulator topological by changing the temperature [25:10] – Perception about research as a whole [27:37] – Challenges with getting research papers published in journals[29:41] – Successful way in research is to specialise in a sub-field and become leaders in that field[31:19] – Experience during PhD and enlarging skillsets (computing) [32:55] – Next career move as a postdoc and pandemic[36:30] – Interest in outreach and doing the podcast [38:11] – What is next? In this episode of the Road to Growth podcast, we are pleased to introduce you to Lucas Caneda. Lucas played in Aix en Provence at the Pro D2 level from 2015 – 2017, then in Angouleme (SAXV) from 2017-2019. After a short stint in Mazamet, he decided to joint Sarlat Rugby, a club with a long history (founded in 1903) where he plays as Team Captain and winger today. It was in Sarlat where Lucas met Dom Einhorn, the Founder and CEO of the UNIQORN incubator-accelerator and president of the Sarlat Rugby Team. He immediately integrated the incubator's Rugby+ program where he now works as a team leader for both the incubator as well as for one of its startups, FORMATION.GG, an up-and-coming platform dedicated to eSports. A student of engineering, management and economics, self-taught in nutrition and fitness, Lucas has always had a very keen interest in business and entrepreneurship. Born in 1990 and hailing from Argentina, Lucas Martin Caneda grew up as a die-hard rugby starting at the tender age of 5. Lucas played center and #9 (scrum-half) till the age of 19 before he moved up to the senior team where he started to play wing. It all began at Club de Rugby Pueyrredón, Lucas' home club. In 2013, Lucas joins the Buenos Aires 7s and wins the Argentinian championship with his team. In 2014, he suffered what many though would be a career- ending knee injury. Few players before him have returned to the pitch post-surgery. Yet, not only did he return to grandiose form, he was selected in the Buenos Aires XV squad in 2015 and won the Argentinian championship with his team. It was in same year of 2015 that Lucas moved to France, with the intent to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a professional rugby player. This was a significant accomplishment for an athlete who was told - at an early age - that he had no shot at pro rugby due to his height (1m75; 5'7). Stay tuned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening. Now on to my guest today, Dom Einhorn, CEO and founder of UNIQORN, a business incubator located in a small French village. Dom grew up in France on the border of Germany where he learned early the necessity of hard work and taking the hard knocks needed to be resilient as an entrepreneur. From the time he started selling calendars, outselling any other kid around, he was hooked. Dom founded UNIQORN when he and wife moved back to France from L.A., settling in France and looking for a way to be of service. UNIQORN helps tech entrepreneurs grow their businesses. He's also the mastermind behind Startup Supercup, a tech conference that will be bringing together thousands of potential investors, hundreds of startups, and media in October of this year. Having been an entrepreneur since the tech boom of the 90s, Dom has seen a lot, and advises that entrepreneurship isn't for the faint of heart. Entrepreneurship isn't for everyone; if you're not able to answer the question “Do I have what it takes?,” Dom says, it's probably not for you. Now let's get better together. Actionable InsightsAs an angel investor and business advisor and mentor, Dom has critical advice for entrepreneurs looking for help, support, and investment: First, get your inner circle on board. Demonstrate that you have something worthy of investing in by recruiting people around you to invest first. Make sure your idea provides solutions to an existing problem. Don't offer a solution in search of a problem. Do your research before you ask for help. If you want to apply to work with someone, find out what they are interested in and what they are looking for. Have a hook to get their attention so you can stand out. Pain is part of being an entrepreneur so embrace it and don't let pain and discomfort distract you. It's the struggle that will lead to greatness. https://youtu.be/dirikvj8Cog Dom Einhorn is the founder and CEO of UNIQORN, the largest rural business incubator, startup accelerator, and coworking space in Sarlat, France. He is a serial entrepreneur with multiple startups exits under his belt, primarily focusing on digital startups and angel investing. We discuss why France is a startup-friendly nation, how to launch and scale a successful tech company, and the 118-year-old startup. --- The 118 Years Old Startup with Dom Einhorn Our guest is Dom Einhorn, who is the founder and CEO of Uniqorn, which is the largest rural incubator accelerator in the world. You can see the location of this accelerator. He is also the founder of a startup Super Cup. He's a serial founder and CEO of many companies, including digital media, technology and others. He speaks six languages. One of them is Alsatian, which I've never heard of, but I trust you, Dom, with that. And most interestingly, he is the president and CEO and the largest shareholder of a semi-professional rugby club, the Sarlat Rugby Team, which is going professional next year. Dom calls it a 118-year-old startup. So welcome to the show, Dom. Thanks for having me, Steve. My pleasure. Great to have you. It's going to be a very exciting and entertaining discussion, I hope, and I trust. Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you become the owner of Accelerator and the serial founder of tech companies in the middle of rural France? When I started very early on at the age of 23 is when I dove in head first into the tech business. I was born and raised in Northeastern France on the German border in the Alsace-Lorraine region. Hence, your question about Alsatian, the language. That is the language that we speak there. For those of you who are history buffs, you'll actually realize that the Alsatian language actually precedes the Alemannic language. So it's at the base of German today. It's very similar to German. At the age of 23, I left France for the US. I started a digital marketing company in 1993 in the US, which I sold in 2001. When I left France, the internet was in its infancy. In fact, we didn't even call it the internet. We called it the information superhighway in those days. It was only in 1995, spring of 1995, I believe, when the Netscape 1.0 appeared that we called it the internet because for the first time in history, we could actually connect to what we ended up calling the web. But prior to that, there was no web because there was no navigator, there was no browser allowing us to access the information on the web. So, in a way, I'm a dinosaur when it comes to the tech space. Try to keep up with the times. 2018, I decided to come back to France and to launch Uniqorn. It's Uniqorn with a Q, for those of you who do not have video. Unicorn, the idea of Uniqorn is to provide support to technology startups from around the world and help them succeed. So, our motto is crawl, walk, thrive. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what an incubator is, think first and foremost of an incubator in a hospital where a young baby is born prematurely, we put it into an incubator to ensure its survival. First and foremost, we do exactly the same thing with startups because we all know when a startup is first founded, that's when it's most fragile. So, we provide it with the framework or frameworks, I shall say, with legal accounting help initially, and then help in terms of business development, marketing, engineering, graphic design, et cetera, anything technology startup would need in order to again, crawl, walk, run, right? Crawl, walk, thrive. That's our motto. I would say that over the last six to eight years, and though I still consider myself as a startup entrepreneur today, my position has mostly morphed into that of a business angel. So I'm more on the capital provisioning side, the capital aggregation side. I also do invest in every deal that comes through our doors,
