Podcast Show Notes Summary Episode: Three Years into HR Consulting with Ambra Parisi In this episode, Sarah Hamilton-Gill catches up with Ambra Parisi, three years after Ambra launched her HR consultancy business following a 15-year corporate HR career. Ambra shares her honest reflections on moving from an HR Director role into consultancy after redundancy in 2022. Rather than being driven purely by financial goals, Ambra explains that her decision came from a desire to return to the heart of HR: adding real value to businesses and supporting leaders with practical, people-focused solutions. She talks openly about the first year in business being a testing period, where she had to build confidence, develop commercial skills, understand her market, and learn how to position her services beyond her technical HR expertise. Ambra now works with small and medium-sized businesses, particularly in the healthcare, dentistry and retail sectors. Her consultancy offers bespoke HR support, including compliance, operational HR, people development and practical guidance for business owners who need senior HR expertise without adding to their permanent headcount. A key theme of the conversation is clarity. Ambra explains how she has shaped her 2026 strategy around three clear business pillars. Sarah and Ambra also discuss the importance of word-of-mouth referrals, listening to client feedback, adapting your services, and staying committed during the early stages of consultancy when the path can feel uncertain. This episode is a valuable listen for HR professionals considering the leap into consulting, as well as existing consultants who are refining their niche, services and business model. Key Takeaways Ambra's journey shows that the first year of consultancy is often about testing, learning and building business confidence. Technical HR expertise is important, but consultants also need commercial awareness, positioning, marketing and relationship-building skills. Clarity around your services and ideal client base makes it easier to attract the right opportunities. Word-of-mouth referrals remain one of the most powerful routes to new business. A strong LinkedIn profile can help consultants showcase their credibility, services and client outcomes. About Ambra Parisi Ambra Parisi is an HR consultant supporting small and medium-sized businesses with practical, bespoke HR services. With a 15-year background in corporate HR, she now works with clients across sectors including healthcare, dentistry and retail, helping business owners strengthen compliance, develop their people and build more effective teams. In this episode of the Leap into HR Consulting podcast, Sarah Hamilton-Gill explains why experienced HR consultants and coaches can still struggle to attract clients, even when they have strong expertise. The central message is simple: stop selling HR support or coaching sessions, and start showing the business outcome. Sarah explores how many consultants describe what they do in terms of services, such as policies, retainers, coaching, psychometrics or leadership development. However, business owners are usually focused on more immediate challenges: people issues taking up too much time, managers avoiding difficult conversations, senior teams lacking alignment, or growth creating risk and chaos. The episode shares three practical ways consultants and coaches can strengthen their positioning: Lead with the outcomeExplain the value your work creates, such as reducing risk, improving leadership confidence, supporting growth, creating clarity or helping managers deal with issues earlier. Be known for something specificMove away from being too general. Choose clear themes or problems you want to be associated with, so people can remember, refer and recommend you more easily. Create a clear next stepAvoid vague endings like “let me know if I can help.” Instead, guide the conversation towards a practical next step, such as an HR priorities review, leadership coaching programme, manager confidence support or facilitated team session. Sarah reassures listeners that struggling to talk about their own value is very common, especially for those moving from corporate HR or in-house coaching into consultancy. The answer is not to become pushy or salesy, but to become clearer, more confident and more commercially relevant. In this episode, Sarah also speaks with Briana Mascaro, a former labour and employment attorney from Florida who has recently made the move from corporate life into entrepreneurship. Briana shares her journey from legal practice into corporate HR, including her time at Disney managing union contracts, employee relations, investigations and complex workplace challenges during major periods such as #MeToo and COVID-19. She explains how this experience has now shaped her new business, where she combines executive coaching, HR consulting and employment law expertise to support smaller businesses with people-related challenges. A key theme of the conversation is the move from corporate certainty to entrepreneurial freedom. Briana talks openly about how coaching became a passion project, how she prepared financially before making the leap, and why building a network and client base before leaving corporate life helped her transition with confidence. Sarah and Briana also explore the importance of outsourcing workplace investigations, particularly for smaller businesses that need independent, credible and objective support. Briana highlights how her legal, HR and employee relations background gives her a strong foundation for handling sensitive and complex investigations. The episode also covers the practical realities of starting a consultancy, including setting up systems such as a CRM and accounting software, using AI tools, managing workload, choosing the right clients and setting realistic goals. Briana shares honest reflections on work-life balance, breaking old corporate habits and creating more time with her daughter. For anyone considering a move from corporate HR or employment law into consulting, this conversation is full of grounded advice, encouragement and practical insight. In this episode, we cover: Briana's transition from employment law to corporate HR and consulting Her experience at Disney with unions, employee relations and complex investigations Why executive coaching became the catalyst for starting her own business The benefits of outsourcing workplace investigations How to prepare financially and practically before leaving corporate life The importance of systems, networking and realistic goal-setting Building a consultancy around your strengths, niche and values Creating better work-life balance as a business owner Listen in if you are thinking about making the leap into consulting, building a coaching practice, or using your corporate expertise to create a more flexible and fulfilling career. Episode 244 of the Transition Drill Podcast explores the power of working backwards from a goal for veterans and first responders navigating the complexities of career shifts. You'll hear retired Navy Commander and helicopter pilot Jeremy Vellon on overcoming the friction of being an outsider, and what it takes to build a successful post-service life by finding your people.Jeremy's journey started in Brooklyn, inspired by a trip to the movies with his father to see Top Gun. That moment sparked a lifelong commitment to naval aviation. His father didn't just offer support; he laid out a clear roadmap of the grades, athletic milestones, and leadership skills required to reach the Naval Academy. Jeremy took that advice to heart, spending his youth working backwards from that singular objective despite being younger and smaller than his peers.Throughout his twenty-year career in the Navy, Jeremy leaned into the discipline of setting preconditions for success. Set to deploy on September 19, 2011, his unit was one of the first to go active after 9/11; deploying immediately to Afghanistan. He faced the harsh realities of service, including the loss of friends, which grounded his professional outlook in the gravity of the mission. This mindset of service and sacrifice was a family legacy, shared with his father who served during the Vietnam era. After retiring in 2018, Jeremy transitioned into a new chapter that prioritized his family and individual growth. Building on his military experience and his MBA from the University of Michigan, he embarked on a new Human Resources career, with a stop at Amazon, he was building his own HR Consulting company. But while he was focused on his career, he was not focused on himself. Then one day he struggled physically to get out of bed. With his wife's prompting and the need to help care for his son, who has Cerebral Palsy, he realized he needed to put focus back on his personal fitness. That caused a new career pivot, and he and his wife are now owners of a Burn Bootcamp Fitness center. Today on Saving America, we're looking at a wave of senseless violence: from the heartbreaking kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie's mother to the devastating school shooting in British Columbia and the ongoing terror in Nigeria. But the crisis doesn't stop at our borders. We're diving into the economic confusion as the government and private sector fight over conflicting jobs reports, while our public schools spend record-breaking amounts only to see student outcomes plummet. Plus, is the “miracle” weight-loss drug GLP-1 actually bringing back a 17th-century pirate disease? We're breaking down the SAVE Act, the future of the Democratic party, and the simple vitamin fix you need to hear about. Today on Saving America, we're exposing a critical threat to our legal immigration system. The Department of Justice's new "interim final rule" for the Board of Immigration Appeals—the BIA—is a game-changer. Despite my tough stance on illegal immigration, I'm a fierce advocate for legal pathways, especially as our nation faces a critical labor shortage. But this new rule, effective March 2026, will summarily dismiss many legitimate appeals, reducing deadlines from 30 days to a mere 10, eliminating full briefings, and dramatically lowering success rates for immigrants already vetted for criminal behavior. Is this truly about efficiency, or is it a "hammer approach" denying legal immigrants their day in court? We'll also dive into the controversial crackdown on H-1B visas and propose a smarter solution than simply throwing out the baby with the bathwater. America, we're under attack on multiple fronts! In this urgent 'Saving America' update, we're exposing the shocking truth the mainstream media is hiding. First, we're diving deep into the escalating war on our ICE agents, where criminal illegals are getting more protection than the very officers defending our borders – I'm talking about kill shots needed here. Then, we'll reveal the industrial-level fraud looting billions from your taxpayer dollars in Minnesota's Medicaid system, with direct links to foreign entities and alleged political cover-ups. We'll also break down the Department of War's unprecedented move against Senator Mark Kelly for his 'seditious' comments, and how Trump is slashing drug prices while forcing big pharma to build factories HERE in America. Plus, we'll expose the absurdity of Europe's 'justice' system and deliver a critical update on Iran where Trump's threats are making terrorists back down. This is the truth about what's happening in our country, and how we fight back to save America! Thanks for joining me for this episode! Send us a textWork Slop: Why AI Shortcuts Are Costing Teams More Than They SaveEver get an email, doc, or deck from someone and instantly think, “This is… not it”? In this episode, we're digging into the rise of work slop—the vague, messy, low-quality output that shows up when AI is used as a replacement for thinking instead of a tool for support.Kendra sits down with Sue Justice, founder of Emory HR, to talk about why this isn't just an AI problem—it's a performance, communication, and leadership problem that businesses can't afford to ignore. We explore:What “Work Slop” Is (and Why It's Growing)How AI-generated work becomes unclear, incorrect, or incompleteWhy “slapping something together” shifts work to the next personThe difference between using AI as an assistant vs. letting it do the job This Isn't a Tool Issue—It's a Behavior IssueHow people have always “phoned it in,” but AI makes it faster and more visibleWhy audiences and teammates can sense when work lacks human touchThe real question leaders must ask: workload problem or character problem? What Leaders Should Do About ItWhen to coach and when to treat it as a performance issueWhy a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) matters before cutting tiesHow industry risk, trust, and legal exposure shape your response Where AI Helps—and Where It Shouldn't LeadUsing AI for brainstorming or templates vs. high-stakes decisionsWhy contracts and policies need human tone, context, and accountabilityThe risk of letting AI output become “authority” without review Sue's Biggest Marketing LessonWhy business owners shouldn't try to do everything themselvesHow doing the wrong work wastes more time than it savesThe sustainability link between delegation and quality Whether you're leading a team, outsourcing work, or using AI in your own business, this episode is a clear reminder: AI can save time, but only if humans own the standard. If the quality drops, the cost doesn't disappear—it just lands on someone else. “AI is meant to be an assistant… not the end-all ‘I'll do it for you' solution.” – Sue Justice 00:00:00 Introduction to Sue Justice and why HR belongs in this conversation 00:02:06 What “work slop” is and how it shows up at work 00:03:39 Why AI misuse is really a people/performance issue 00:06:53 Skill gap vs. character flaw: how to tell the difference 00:09:57 When work slop becomes a firing-level problem 00:13:05 Transparency, AI policies, and setting clear standards 00:19:01 AI adoption is everywhere—whether companies admit it or not 00:23:04 Sue's biggest marketing lesson as a business ownerConnect with Sue Justice:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/susanajustice/Website: https://emeryhr.com/ Looking to leverage AI?
