We get the thoughts of Lori Williams, Political Scientist at Mount Royal University. Next, the inflation rate ‘cooled' back down to two-percent last month. But are we seeing this reflected on prices at the grocery store? We ‘dig-in' to the topic with Sylvain Charlebois, Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University. Finally, like it or not, ‘COVID' is still a ‘thing'. And with colder weather coming soon, and more time being spent indoors, should you consider getting a COVID ‘booster' shot this Fall? We get the thoughts of Dr. Craig Jenne, Infectious Disease Specialist from the University of Calgary.

In this week's New FDA Approval's podcast episode, Dr. Emma Hitt Nichols discusses the latest FDA approvals from September 11, 2023 – September 15, 2023.  Please check back every Monday morning so that you can stay up to date.  See more details summaries and links to prescribing information at nascentmc.com/podcast Here are the highlights: • Ojjaara for Anemia in Myelofibrosis: FDA approved Ojjaara (momelotinib) for the treatment of intermediate or high-risk myelofibrosis in adults with anemia. This drug is unique as it serves both newly diagnosed and previously treated patients, addressing anemia, constitutional symptoms, and splenomegaly. Approval was based on the MOMENTUM phase 3 trial results. • Resmetirom for NASH: FDA granted priority review for resmetirom, aiming to treat non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Madrigal, its manufacturer, seeks approval via the FDA's accelerated pathway. Resmetirom is evaluated in four phase 3 trials, including MAESTRO-NASH. The decision is set for March 14, 2024. • Updated COVID-19 Vaccines: FDA approved updated vaccines for the coming season targeting the omicron descendant XBB.1.5. While older vaccines targeted earlier strains, these new shots might provide protection against prevalent related strains. Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are manufacturing the vaccines. • Phenylephrine Lack of Efficacy: An FDA panel unanimously found phenylephrine, present in OTC decongestants like Sudafed and Dayquil, ineffective for its intended use. If the FDA agrees, over 250 products containing phenylephrine might be withdrawn from the market. This decision does not affect nasal preparations. • Patisiran for ATTR-CM: The FDA's advisory committee voted that the benefits of patisiran surpass its risks for treating cardiomyopathy induced by transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR-CM). Although the drug showed small effects compared to placebo in the Phase III APOLLO-B study, it met primary and secondary endpoints. The FDA's decision will be made on or before Oct. 8, 2023. Your Plants Are Trying to Tell You They're Thirsty Spring is in the air, with flowers blooming and gardens starting. Most people with a green thumb will know a droopy plant is a signal that it needs water. But new research has found another way that plants will signal that they're thirsty: emitting staccato popping sounds, too high pitched for the human ears. Elsewhere in the world of science journalism, an argument has been made that elephants have self-domesticated. If true, this would make these gentle giants only the third creature to have done this, alongside humans and bonobos. Joining Ira to talk about these stories and other science stories of the week is Rachel Feltman, host of the podcast “The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week” and editor at large of Popular Science.   Your Future COVID-19 Vaccine May Come Through Your Nose The nose knows about COVID-19 infection. It is the entrance to the immune system, after all. The nose's position as one of our first lines of defense has many experts in favor of developing COVID-19 nasal sprays, with the thought that it may replace the needle jabs we've come to expect. The development of nasal vaccines comes at a time when many Americans are anxiously awaiting if the government will approve additional COVID-19 boosters. The bivalent boosters have been out for more than six months, and there have been reports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will recommend an additional dose for some Americans this spring. Joining Ira to give us the latest on nasal sprays, boosters, and answering some listener questions is Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, immunobiologist at Yale Medical School in New Haven, Connecticut.   Make It Easier To Be Green. Show Frogs Some Love Frogs have been called the equivalent of the canary in the coalmine, harbingers for the health of our environment. When frogs go silent, something is amiss. So we're going to spend some time talking about why frogs are so important and how you can better support your neighborly amphibians. One idea? Build a toad abode and welcome them in. Plus, there's another way to help frogs and toads—and that's by lending your eyes and your ears to the scientists who study them. April is Citizen Science Month, so we're kicking things off with a toad-ally cool project called FrogWatch. It relies on volunteers from across the country to record frog calls and report them to FrogWatch's database. Ira talks with Dr. Itzue Caviedes-Solis, assistant professor at Swarthmore College, about making outdoor spaces more frog-friendly. Then, he chats with Carrie Bassett, National FrogWatch USA coordinator and education mission manager at the Akron Zoo, about how volunteers can lend their eyes and ears to help scientists study frogs.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

The Health Advocates discuss the reasons behind lagging vaccination rates for the COVID-19 bivalent booster in the United States, new vaccines on the horizon for RSV, and strategies that can help improve immunization rates. "The ability for pharmacists to deliver and provide vaccines is important. It's much easier to go to a pharmacy. Oftentimes you don't need an appointment. It's not as scary, you know, for anything else as going to a doctor's office. It's not as intimidating,” says Steven Newmark, Director of Policy at GHLF. “And now they're also able to provide COVID vaccines, and in some jurisdictions, they're even able to provide routine immunizations as well. So that definitely helps." Among the highlights in this episode: 1:59: As of today, only 15.3% of Americans have received the updated booster 3:20: A recent online study published by the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) found that the most common reasons for people not getting a bivalent booster were lack of awareness about eligibility (23.2%) or of vaccine availability (19.3%) and overestimations of their own existing immunity from previous vaccines or infections (18.9%) 3:50: “The lack of awareness about eligibility or vaccine availability is so high… It shows that we live in a little bit of a bubble, because to my mind, I see notices everywhere,” says Steven Newmark 4:13: “I went home to New Jersey a few weeks ago, and I did notice a lot more signage about COVID compared to here in Nashville… If you go into a pharmacy, of course, there are signs about shots available here but it's not broadcasted. We don't have a subway system for example [in Nashville] and that's where a lot of signs are in New York… Here's my bubble,” says Zoe Rothblatt, Associate Director of Community Outreach at GHLF 5:34: “I think that we have to consider where we're putting messages that we're meeting people in their everyday life, and not creating an extra burden. Because often, health care can feel like a burden, especially for people with chronic illness. But I think it's just about getting the right messaging out in the right places,” says Zoe Rothblatt 5:52: After participants [to the MMWR survey] were given information on eligibility and availability, 67.8% of those who hadn't gotten a booster said that they would pursue one; a survey one month later showed that 28.6% of these participants had actually done so 7:14: In the latest episode of Healthcare Matters (episode 7), hosts Dr. Robert Popovian and Conner Mertens discuss the enhanced role of pharmacies in the overall immunization process in the U.S. and how important of an access point pharmacies are for people You can listen to the episode via the link below: https://ghlf.org/healthcarematters/#episode27 8:22: The FDA is considering a shift in COVID-19 strategy: moving away from requiring two shots of the original vaccine in order to be able to get the updated bivalent booster and to adopt instead a strategy similar to the annual flu shot where people could simply get whatever the latest version of the vaccine is annually 9:18: For immunocompromised patients, the FDA would recommend two annual doses of the shot 9:28: “Myself like many had to hold my regular injections that treat my arthritis and Crohn's for the COVID shot, so doing that [booster shot] twice [annually] is a huge setback in health,” says Zoe Rothblatt 11:02: There is no vaccine yet to prevent RSV, although there is a medicine that can help protect some babies at high risk for severe RSV disease (it is very costly and requires monthly injection), and another is in development for infants that would last for the whole season 12:41: What our hosts learned from this episode Contact Our Hosts Steven Newmark, Director of Policy at GHLF: snewmark@ghlf.org Zoe Rothblatt, Associate Director, Community Outreach at GHLF: zrothblatt@ghlf.org We want to hear what you think. [00:30] Democrats: Republicans Are Fascists (18 minutes) Last week, Joe Biden called Trump-supporting Republicans “a threat to our very democracy” and labeled them semi-fascists. Biden's inflammatory rhetoric, which was backed up by White House spokespeople and emphasized by the media, is curated to spark riots from the right. Ultimately, they are trying to trigger a civil war. America Under Attack couldn't be coming out at a better time. [18:10] Bill Barr Disappoints Yet Again (11 minutes) In a podcast interview with Bari Weiss, Bill Barr said he is frustrated with the right pandering to popular outrage and declared the FBI did nothing wrong when it raided Mar-a-Lago. He also called criticism of the FBI “over the top” and said the FBI and other agencies are not attempting to “interfere in the political process.” Remember that Bill Barr was over the FBI when it plotted to assassinate the governor of Michigan, ran a disinformation campaign to protect the Biden family in the lead-up to the 2020 election, and failed to investigate any fraud in the 2020 election. [29:38] Mar-a-Lago Affidavit (11 minutes) A heavily redacted version of the affidavit for raiding Mar-a-Lago has been released, and even the Wall Street Journal questioned in one article, “Is That All There Is?” One thing the affidavit does reveal is the obvious double standard of justice. Former Trump counselor Mike Davis correctly called the raid “a political hit on a former president.” [40:30] Vaccine Update (15 minutes) In a Fox interview, Dr. Peter McCullough reassured Dan Bongino that only 15 percent of vaccinated people have negative side effects or injuries from the vaccine. Israel, one of the most vaccinated countries in the world, is seeing a 15 percent increase in deaths from all causes in 2021–2022 so far, with death rates higher every month this year than they have been since 2017. Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration announced that the latest COVID booster shots would be released before they have finished human testing because they are “confident” they will be safe. Also, it appears that Democrats are now preparing to blame Donald Trump for vaccine failures, saying he pushed the FDA to get the vaccine ready quickly for political reasons.

Producer/Host: Dr. John Hunt About the host: My Sunday morning short has been running for about 11 years. I've cover a wide range of animal related topics from COVID to porcupines. After graduating from Michigan State University Veterinary School in 1982 I practiced at three different veterinary hospitals in the Hartford, Conn area for 5 years. Then I bought a small part time clinic in Bucksport and turned it into a full time small animal surgery and medicine hospital. From 1987 to 2014 I enjoyed serving the Bucksport-Orland area pet owners. My kids grew up in Bucksport. I was a Boy Scoutmaster for a few years, and coached cross country and track in the Bucksport school system for 20 years. I've written three books working on a fourth. I sold my practice and retired from practicing medicine in 2014. Since “retiring” I've continued Pet Sounds and my monthly Lets Talk Animals show on WERU. I've been teaching at local community colleges, officiating at high school track meets, writing and started a blog on line. I enjoy hiking, reading, writing and anticipate spending more time with my first grandchild. On this episode of Today's Workplace we examine the Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS) issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). On January 13th, 2022 the US Supreme Court issued two decisions in cases challenging the ETS on vaccination and testing, one to OSHA and the other to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Supreme Court decided to reimpose a stay on the enforcement of OSHA's ETS, while the preliminary injunctions against the CMS interim final rule are pending further litigation. We don't know what we're talking about today, Neighbor Pkarlghl! But that never stops us from filling 45 minutes with meandering conversation... Emmi (5-years-old) treats us to a very quiet recitation of "The Elephant." Then we get ready to open the mailbag. (But first--a quick plug for the Fight Laugh Feast Conference. John says we'll be recording the next episode live at the conference, and hopefully that's true!) This week, someone mistook John's youngest daughter, Tabby, for his wife. (Awkward.) And someone else named their computer "Pkarlgh" in honor of this podcast. (Awesome!) Then the Peaches' is asked for an update about the vaccine mandate being imposed on her husband, who's a registered nurse. Luke was granted a religious exemption, and the Peaches shares the details about the scathing letter they wrote and gave to the hospital. Healthcare is a mess right now! Good employees are being fired (or walking out), and the leadership teams are panicking. Facebook groups of angry healthcare workers are being blown off the internet. What a time to be alive! Then John asks, "Why do administrators think they can just be nasty--and bare their teeth--and then people will do what they want?" And the answer is…unfortunately, because that DOES work sometimes. This leads to a conversation about Christians being bullied into deleting things off the internet. Later, Rick Warren said the best way to love your neighbor in this era is to wear a mask. John has some thoughts about that. And the Peaches thinks people on both sides of the debate are actually afraid they might be wrong... This episode was recorded on December 18, 2020.  To claim credit visit: https://ce.mayo.edu/covid19podcast  Guest: Gregory A. Poland, M.D. (@drgregpoland)  Host: Amit K. Ghosh, M.D., M.B.A. (@AmitGhosh006)  It is projected that by March of 2021 1:700 Americans will have died of COVID-19. The historic pace of COVID-19 vaccine development was made possible by the countless sacrifices of many individuals across healthcare, research, health and human services, the Department of Defense, and other key sectors. This interprofessional collaboration required many to set life aside and work tirelessly to bring an effective vaccine to market, quickly. While mRNA vaccines have been in development since the 1990s, the COVID-19 vaccine efficacy rate of 95-100% across studied ages, race and ethnicities, and comorbidities is unprecedented. The questions left to answer are, how long will the efficacy last? In larger population studies, what is the safety/allergy/hypersensitivity profile? What impact does the vaccine have on asymptomatic carrier spread? Who shouldn't get the vaccine? Dr. Greg Poland breaks down everything you need to know about the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.  Additional Resources: Mayo Clinic Vaccine Research Page https://www.mayo.edu/research/labs/vaccine-research-group/overview  Vaccine education spectrum disorder: the importance of incorporating psychological and cognitive models into vaccine education  https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0264410X11011881  AskMayoExpert COVID-19 Resources: https://askmayoexpert.mayoclinic.org/navigator/COVID-19  Connect with the Mayo Clinic's School of Continuous Professional Development online at https://ce.mayo.edu/ or on Twitter @MayoMedEd.
