Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Gema Varona, Ph.D., to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Dr. Varona joins us and discusses her decades of experience researching the evolving boundaries of restorative justice, challenging the traditional limits imposed by legal frameworks. She shares her journey from academia to hands-on work with survivors of terrorism, sexual abuse, and large-scale corporate and environmental harm. She explains why punitive measures often fail to address the root causes of harm and how restorative justice offers an individualized, relational approach that centers victims' needs while fostering true accountability. Listen as Dr. Varona delves into the role of dialogue in breaking cycles of violence, the importance of institutional courage, and the urgent need for a shift in global justice systems. As countries move toward more punitive approaches, this conversation serves as a powerful reminder that restorative justice is both an act of resistance and a path to transformation. Dr. Varona is a professor of Victimology and Criminal Policy at the University of the Basque Country and a senior researcher at the Basque Institute of Criminology (Donostia/San Sebastian, Spain). In 1998 she was honored with the Junior Scholar Competition Award of the International Society of Criminology for her research on restorative justice. From 2014-17 she worked as co-director of the Master in Victimology at that University. She served as a member of the executive committee of the World Society of Victimology and now holds the position of president. She has authored books on migration and human rights, restorative justice, juries and the construction of juridical truth, women's local safety audits, victims of terrorism, victims of sexual abuse, and evaluation of public policies. Tune in to learn more about Dr. Varona's work and perspective on the importance of restorative justice across contexts. Hear more from Dr. Varona at the 2025 World Conference!

Be swept away by the flow of intermystical spirituality as Swami Padmanabha and Brother Alberto Varona explore the interweaving of their journeys in mystical traditions. Brother Alberto, a devout member of the Community of Francis and Claire, clinical psychologist, and director of campus ministry at Saint Xavier University, shares his profound journey back to his deepened roots in Christianity after practicing Gaudiya Vaishnavism for nearly two decades. In a unique and enriching dialogue, Swami Padmanabha and Brother Alberto delve into an exploration of practical and theological mystical Christianity and Gaudiya Vaishnavism, and discover a richer, more interconnected understanding of these profound spiritual paths. Stepping into the perspective of each other's traditions, they (and we) are able to look back at their own with a more nuanced and richer vision. Some of the threads of this rich conversational tapestry are:•What is the relationship between the certainty of religion and the mystery of God•What would faith look like if it was grounded in belovedness?•How do shame and feelings of unworthiness impact our approach to our practice and our relationship with God?•What is the relationship between mystical spirituality and institutional religion and how do them impact each other•The practice of presence in mystical traditions—God's omnipresence and our own omniabsence•The influx of grace.•What is the ultimate relationship with God for which they each aspire.•How nonduality leads to unified diversity. With infinite pride and hunger, Raven or RavieB comes from the Bronx and she always comes to represent herself and the individuals she captures with her lens of choice.

Support the show

Tax giveaways to non–Puerto Ricans mean money not going to Puerto Rico's energy systems, schools, hospitals, housing. The post Julio López Varona on Puerto Rico Colonialism, Guerline Jozef on Haitian Refugee Abuse appeared first on FAIR.
When Hurricane Fiona recently hit Puerto Rico, the storm brought wind, water and major flooding to the island. Local authorities are still assessing the damage, but so far we know that some people died, others lost their homes and just about everyone lost electricity. Unfortunately, we’ve been here before. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, billions of federal dollars went to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams speaks with Julio López Varona, co-chief of campaigns at the advocacy group Center for Popular Democracy, about whether that technology investment did anything.

New month, new theme! Suzanne Varona helps us kick off our new theme with a message of hope. Theme verse: Psalm 90:17 "Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hand"Our theme this month is the encouragement to seek our CALLER over our CALLING. We get so caught up trying to figure out what our purpose and calling is. Instead, let's be intentional and take time to be with our CALLER! We pray this message encourages you and that you turn around and share it with HER.Tine in next week with some practical tips on how to seek the CALLER. #faith #women
This episode is about addressing misinformation, educating, and correcting the record. Right wing media has gone largely unchecked making false claims, distorting statistics, and outright lying primarily about gender-affirming care for trans kids and trans women and girls in sports. The mean-spirited outcry has led to legislators quoting this media and bills becoming very real laws intended to extinguish transgender people. 2021 has seen the highest number of state bills presented and passed in the last 10 years. But the danger of these bills isn't just for transgender people. These laws potentially affect the privacy and bodily autonomy of all kids, especially girls. // Chase Strangio is Deputy Director for Transgender Justice with the ACLU's LGBT & HIV Project and a nationally recognized expert on transgender rights. He has been on the frontlines defending trans rights and tells us what is happening in our nation's courtrooms. // Please rate, review, subscribe and share The Laverne Cox Show with everyone you know.
